We are long overdue for a Valkyria Chronicles 5 that builds on this game's formula. Even in 2025 I still find myself coming back to play this occasionally because of the experience it offers. The gameplay is fun, The Characters are interesting, the music is fitting. Until we get 5, Grab this one.

Of the mainline Valkyria Chronicles games, VC4 is by far my favorite one. VC1 is a classic, but also very simple gameplay-wise. Especially considering scouts are so over powered. I actually recommend watching the anime adaptation of VC1 over playing the game as the anime gives the characters so much more depth. VC2 is the worst of the mainline games by a wide margin. Very odd choice to make a PSP sequel to a PS3 game. Overall its very generic, even having a school setting. It is the only…

Loved the first game. Was really enjoying this one in 2019 and 2024 but never finished it. Now I return to the game crashing to desktop before the loading screen. Had to find a discussion post explaining that the last update made the game crash if you had steam controller support on. Fixed that and the game crashes during mission gameplay. Sadly, a game this old isn't very likely to get any further updates so I'm not SOL on ever finishing it. Definitely not happy about that.

Not an outright rejection, but on balance I spend more time annoyed than I do enjoying it. There is a lot of good here. Investing in unit improvements, getting that crucial shot with a sniper, having a plan fail but finding a way out of the mess you make. Some good fun to be had. Puzzle mixed with strategy. But then every so often the enemy nonsense gets too much. A pile of enemies appear out of thin air. Gameplay rules are established only for the enemy to get a cheat of the rule minutes…

The first game was levels better. I'm not saying the first game didn't have its issues, but it had a compelling story, interesting characters and a reasonable level of difficulty. This game introduces huge maps, long waits for enemy turns, and battle mechanics that are just not needed and frustrating. I can't push myself to grind through long, huge maps (levels) while there are enemies and bosses with cheat codes enabled. (it's that bad) Some bosses bring enemy units back from the dead,…

VERY narrowly misses the recommendation line. This game is like diving through the sewers in search of gold. The most important thing to know going in is that this is a story told through a game, and pretty much every mechanic pushes towards that end. The "chapter-book" system, the way missions unfold, and the game progression are all tied very closely to the story. This would be fine, but many of the cutscenes are so agonizingly bad that I debated dropping the game outright because of it.…

A truly unique and engaging tactics game complimented by a great aesthetic and cool setting. Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based tactics RPG set in an alternate reality WW2-esque setting, featuring a unique, hybrid take on gameplay and combat, a standout aesthetic/visual style, an engaging story with a good variety of missions, a large cast of fun characters of varying quality with a decent amount of playstyles and synergies, and a great OST. The real bread and butter of Valkyria Chronicles…

Preface this by saying that I played the original Valkyria Chronicles many years ago on PS3, and also played this one on my PS4 a good many years ago. I own it on my PS4, Switch, and on Steam. Just getting around to playing it again and decided to leave a review on it because I feel I have more than enough hours from the years of playing it on and off to make a few quick generalized takes on it. There was little to no thought to how this all flows, and I typed as I thought of things to say, so…

Overall game is good, story is ok-ish. Still going to recommend it but there's one big gripe: Your evaluation of a stage (A, B, C) is based on the number of turns it takes to capture the enemy's base camp. There are many large scale battles where you are "punished" with a lower evaluation if you don't try to optimize your run by rushing through the most efficient route to capture the enemy camp in the least number of turns possible. Not to mention many camps are barely guarded with only 1…

I cannot recommend this game to anyone who HASN'T already got a investment in the series. (and maybe even if you do) The missions are either the most laborious slog-fests or the fastest missions known to man. The story is extremely mediocre and full of inconstancies, the antagonists aren't fed to you well at all and the main cast might aswell have their stereotypes written across their foreheads. (Stereotypes aren't bad alone but combines with the most barefaced un-originality its pretty dull)…

Genuinely really fun outside of the boss fights, they all basically boil down to investing 30 mins into fighting then getting sidewiped by some random gimmick that takes more effort than it's worth to wrestle back victory, may aswell start over and just scout rush most the time sadly. Chapter 17a's fight genuinely feels like the result of several developers being forced to drink with their boss for a month straight and unable to play their own game. After Chapter 16 the missions just become…

Good game brought down by a nonsensical villain and a terribly rushed 2nd half. The story itself had a lot of potential during the beginning with excellent character moments between the cast, but along the way after a certain point in the game very few characters get any screen time to breath in between plot moments and majority of characters feel under baked by the end, especially the main romance between the MC and his childhood friend which I felt lacked any sort of chemistry throughout. Such and underrated game and series. Don't let it's anime-themed characters turn you off. This is a very addictive strategy, turn-based tactical shooting game that rewards your planning and thinking 3 turns ahead (like chess). Easy to pickup and play with many different ways of approaching missions. (Just don't expect the best narrative in the world.)

The gameplay itself is really good. There's definitely been a lot of polish and the additions to the game are fine. Mortars feel great to use, the APC and the march orders do make up for the shortcomings of some units and allow for interesting strategies. The combat engineers being able to revive people is very handy too. That being said, the story and the dialogue on the EN side of things suffers from the disease that is localization. The first game's translation did take some liberties, but…

Hey. This game sucks. This is the most On Rails "Strategy" game I've ever played. If you want to play something that doesn't want you to be 'good' at the game, and instead just experience the story. This may be for you. Valkyria Chronicles 1 was the first game I played after building my first PC, and this game was a fantastic successor. Enjoyed the game enough to get all A ranks on every mission, but not enough to try to get every achievement. If you are looking for a fun and engaging strategy game with some absolutely broken DLC add-ons look no further.

Valkyria Chronicles 4: Complete Edition delivers everything I enjoy about this series and then some. The art direction is outstanding, and the character designs are a major highlight. The art director clearly has a strong eye for creating memorable, appealing female characters, and that signature style adds a lot of charm and personality to the game. I loved the first game to death. This game has too many problems, it's really sad. Excruciatingly slow and meaningless cutscenes between missions. Missions and difficulty are extremely easy. As in, not even an 8 yr old would find this hard in any way. Core gameplay loop from the series is still there with some additions and improvements, but it's just not enough and unbearable to play.

I completed the first battle of chapter 4 and already spend 10 hours in this game. Most of the time was spent for trying to get A rank and met all conditions of the battle to obtain good weapons early on. The game is much more forgiving in archiving A-rank compare to the first entry, which is a good improvement, however, to make thing a little bit more complicated, you'll need to kill all the leaders, tanks and keep all units alive if you want to get all the rewards. Using only your immediate resources and cobbled together recruits to battle enemies who outnumber and outgun you. Being a part of the political backline, making sure your units are being well-supplied and well-organized. Pros Unique tactical RPG in a fictional WWII scenario. Mix of turn-based and real time tactical gameplay. A return to form after whatever they were thinking with VC2, VC3 and Valkyria Revolution. Well designed and diverse roster of characters to fill your platoon, and with more personality thanks to the addition of squad stories. The main characters are on par with the ones on VC1. It literally starts on a diary entry that minimizes the impact of losing one's hometown and attempts to include foreshadowing, "no one expected the troubles we'd go through" which seems clearly out of scope for a diary that's written in the moment. Epic and unlike any other SRPG Valkyria Chronicles 4 is an incredible glowup from the previous three games and a truly unique genre isolate within the broad category of "turn-based tactics RPG". In a genre of four games, it's one of the best, despite its flaws.
