Players praise the unique blend of turn-based strategy and real-time action. [1][2][3] The watercolor art style and emotional story are widely appreciated. [1][3] Some reviewers criticize the ranking system and trial-and-error gameplay. [4][5][6]

A fantastic, novel idea for an anime-style turn-based/realtime strategy hybrid that is unfortunately hamstrung by some of the most egregious design blunders imaginable. Level design might be the worst offender, with every single chapter not only being extremely linear with little variation in how combat plays out, even with differing team compositions, but also having poorly-conceived and poorly-designed gimmicks …

A unique and beautiful strategy rpg. the game mixes turn based strategy with real time movement and shooting, making the battles feel much more dynamic and fun than a traditional strategy game. the story is also really good and emotional, with memorable characters and a beautiful anime inspired art style that makes everything look like a living painting. theres a lot of strategy involved in choosing your units and …

Imagine XCOM and an anime had a baby and that baby was somehow better than both parents. That's Valkyria Chronicles. The watercolour art style goes stupidly hard, the story hits harder than expected and the tactical combat is genuinely fresh even by today's standards. Yes, you will get attached to your soldiers. Yes,, some of them will die. No, you will not be okay. The difficulty can spike out of nowhere and …

This game is pure soul. Good story (although the plot becomes a bit too exaggerated in the end, at least to my liking). Keep in mind the plot differs a little bit from the anime (anime's plot has the upperhand here, more sensible). Great sound and OST. Superb art. Cool menus. But a very flawed game when it comes to gameplay for the following reasons: - Order system is straight-up broken, there are 3 or 4 orders that …

I didn’t expect much from Valkyria Chronicles, but everything changed after I played it! Players who liked Valkyria Chronicles™ talk about unique and dynamic tactical combat system; those who didn't talk about ranking system based solely on turn count is flawed. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Valkyria Chronicles has received very favorable reviews from numerous sources, including writers for IGN, RPGFan, G4TV's X-Play, and GameTrailers. Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot was impressed with the title's gameplay design, noting that it gave players a new sense of tactical freedom absent in other games of the same genre via the removal of certain staples such as a grid-based map. Some reviewers enjoyed the active and strategic nature of combat. According to Game Revolution's Chris Hudak, "nail-gnawingly tense" situations kept the player emotionally involved in the game. Both the game's story and the way in which it was presented were cited as strong points. Longevity was also attributed to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is advertised on both its store page and ProtonDB as having verified support on Linux under proton. It doesn't. Unacceptable levels of stuttering and audio flickering even with the newest version of Proton-GE as of writing this. If you're on a Linux machine, don't even bother. At least on my setup, it just won't run at an acceptable level. Save your money.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright. To start off with, I didn't finish this game. And I don't want to even after telling myself for months I have to get back into it. I got to chapter 14 before deciding that the game is just not for me. Why? Simple. The game pretends to be a tactical rpg, but it isn't. It's more like a tactical puzzle game, by the late game you basically have to have the ideal squad setup in order to finish most missions. I expected valkriya chronicles to be like anime xcom or silent storm, but it ended…

As you get invested in the story both Weikin and Alicia get caught up in war surviving the hard times in the struggle. You met your fellow comrades in arms as you battle fighting for your homeland to live in peace. I must say these comrades are to ride and die for to the very end that is how much I love this crew of characters . For a tactical…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Valkyria Chronicles is a game I went into with zero nostalgia. This is a completely first-time experience many years after its initial launch, and it has now earned a place among my favorite JRPGs, sitting comfortably alongside titles like Xenogears, Mother 3, Chrono Trigger, the NieR series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails series, and the Yakuza series. I consider the combat somewhat flawed, with certain scenarios leading to frustration, but it remains contextually enjoyable for the war setting…

A large ensemble cast, fun school-sim segments, and engaging combat make this a solid strategy game for the console. Read our review below! Review: www.rpgfan.com/review/valky...

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Anime Poses Meet Trench Warfare Valkyria Chronicles is the kind of game that lures you in with this whole “serious war story” vibe—trenches, tanks, dieselpunk grit—and then sucker‑punches you with three consecutive cutscenes where everyone’s striking anime poses like they’re auditioning for Dragon Ball: The Musical. I mean, what are we doing here? Am I supposed to feel the weight of war or clap politely while some dude salutes the camera like he’s in a boy band? It’s like watching Band of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game with a great art style and interesting setting ruined by trial-and-error gameplay that can't really be remedied by anything. The beginning is great and makes it seem like this is going to be a fun game. Unfortunately after a while it just becomes frustrating. Most missions seem like you either need to find out the one and only solution that works, rely on knowledge from an earlier failed attempt or straight out cheese the fight. There were times where I knew exactly what needs to be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Again, not for me. The tone and presentation are a bit too “anime” for my taste, and the pacing felt slow — I lost interest after about fifteen minutes. I’m an older player, and this style just doesn’t click with me anymore. It’s clearly not a bad game; it just didn’t work for me. Not the game’s fault.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Valkyria, Valkyria May the bloodline live forever Valkyria, Valkyria Bless and protect our fertile land Valkyria Chronicles is a game that has a special place in my heart. Even with the stiffly acted and oddly paced cutscenes the delivery of the actors still manages to pull you're heart strings. The world and story is lovingly crafted, and it helps that the artstyle helps holding up the game a decade later. (Like the cute detail of letters appearing from shooting weapons like it's a comic…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A true classic that is showing its age. The turn-based/real-time combo is unique and fun. A lot of QoL issues keep this from being a masterpiece. Weird terrain hitboxes, the inability to speed up the enemy's turn, lack of difficulty scaling, awful rating system, little replay value, to name a few. The rating system in particular detracts from the overall experience of the game. It's sole criteria is the number of turns it takes to finish the mission, meaning that to achieve the highest…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →All in all a pretty fun time. The idea of turn-based combat where you move around freely and need to aim and shoot sounds like a mess but feels amazing in practice. This game executes it fine, it's not amazing, but still an excellent base. I'm surprised more series don't do this style of combat, or perhaps I just don't know where to look for them. The story is alright, a bit too generic and lost me midway. Can't say I wasn't hoping for more since the characters themselves are quite fun. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you told me even a couple years ago that I'd fall in love with an anime-ified spin on a WW2 tactics game, I'd ask what the hell you're smoking and then ask for a hit of it after. It sounds quite ludicrous when worded like that. And yet, here I am writing a review for Valkyria Chronicles. My god, this game is incredible. I was already a sucker for tactics games, but Valkyria implements plenty of unique designs and changes to the tactics formula that help it stand out as a crown jewel among…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A damn masterpiece for as long as it's the only game you can play. If it was the only title I had on a PS3 back in 2008 I'd love it, I'd replay the hell out of it, I'd think about it at school and strategize the hell out of it. Unfortunately, back in 2008 I was obsessive about Tibia, not this, and I can only imagine how much more fun I could be having rn. If you take your time and experiment instead of searching for a cheese solution for every level - bravo. Me on the other hand - I tried…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was the main reason I held onto my PS3 for so long. I played it through twice on the PS3 and am going through my third now on the PC. I love the art and tactical combat. The story is nice, but by no means a selling point. Unit progression feels good as you go through the campaign, and it's fun to replay the skirmishes to see how efficiently you can beat them. The characters have enough personality to make it sting if you let them die permanently in battle.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty fun at the start, though with the typical flaws of an anime console game with the overdramatic and at the same time weird dialogues and strange charater logics but at least the gameplay is interesting. And then you hit chapter 7, where the game throws an almost-immortal boss at you and once you get too close to beating him the game sends a trully immortal boss to help the first one with enough moves to run through your whole team and one-shot everyone in one turn. And the only…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is essentially XCOM combined with a visual novel, and it works pretty well. The one major issue I have with this game though is the way that the ranking works. More specifically, the rank you get for each mission is dependent on the number of turns you complete the mission in. Not the number of enemies killed or the damage that your squadmates take or anything like that, purely just the number of turns you finish the mission in. This sounds alright on paper, but in practice it means that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So they advise you to take soldiers out and place them at further bases except you can't extract your soldier unless they touch a base. And they advise snipers in a position you can't move them to get to a base! Wow how thought out! Oh but it gets better! A mission where you can only use the trenches but wait! you can't shoot from the trenches :) wow this is so much fun
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game starts interestingly enough, has a cool premise, and in theory, nice gameplay; unfortunately after a few missions it turns frustratingly difficult, forcing you to clear the missions the way it wants, and pulling new rules outta it's ass, eating away all fun it previously introduced. I like the aesthetics, graphics, and music.

Overall this is definitely worth playing even though it has some rough spots and doesn't really make use of all its pieces to its full potential, which makes the disappointment I felt in VC4 all the worse. I want to say this is a unique sort of experience though I haven't played many tactics games so I can't say for sure. The main appeal here is you aren't constrained to a grid, you do…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr An okay strategy game with a more unique take on ww2, that is painfully anime and tries to browbeat you about how valorous their characters are and how evil the baddies are. You'll enjoy it more fully if you like anime, but if you don't the writing be a sort of "so bad it's good" kind of deal or fall flat. This is one of those games I have problems reviewing, because I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. The actual gameplay part is decent enough, even the "logistics" part of it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved playing the game at my friends place on playstation way back when. Unfortunately this is another bad console port with barely any attempt at implmenting mouse and keyboard support and bad console ui. Would be nice if the dialogue was skippable (if you are like me and suck at the game and have to see the same dialogue for the umpteent time).

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To begin, the art direction in this game is amazing. Units and environments look great, and movement and visual effects are interesting and appealing. A character running will shake their armor plates, grenades, and ammo packs - the attention to detail is great. The designs of the classes are also creative. I have a soft spot for knights charging with exploding lances against tanks. The characters were fine. The squad had acceptable camaraderie and I could see the main characters slowly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great mix of visual novel and turn-based strategy game with a twist, topped off with a unique and charming art style. The game does a great job of portraying a war, your actions and consequences in it, all while integrating your own squads’ development alongside the bigger picture. Your soldiers, other than the main cast, get their own codex-like entries as you play and can die permanently if you aren’t careful, adding to the weight of your combat decisions. Each soldier is unique with their…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game for PS3 back in the day and never made it past the tutorial. I thought the menu was clunky and there's no autosave. But coming back to it now, being a little more patient, this is an incredible strategy game experience with so much love and detail. I think I can actually appreciate everything Valkyria Chronicles is doing now I'm a bit older. The book menu system is still clunky- the lack of autosave is a pain- but past those aches is one of the most engaging original strategy…

positive · AI labelView post →Anime WW2 is what most people describe the setting of Valkyria Chronicles and yea that's about right. I won't speak too much on the story other than I enjoyed the characters and plot. I actually started with VC2 on the PSP as my first game into this IP so it was really cool seeing the "OGs" in action. VC1 Is a solid tactics/strategy game. I mean, ya can't really go wrong when the game is quite often on sale for like £3.74. It's quite unique in that you control a character from their POV instead…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked most of the story, aside from a few things that didn't make that much sense. I liked the characters of your squad and I like the way you play on the map. It did take some getting used to, as I have not played any game like this before. To me however, the game would be hella annoying, if it didn't let you save during a mission. I basically had to save after every turn, because you sometimes just can't tell how things would play out, the mechanic decides to repair a barricade behind you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a solid 6/10 mid game but a mid game that is rather entertaining. The story is mid because the characters are locked into their morale alignement. So villians have to strictly be villians and the heroes vice versa, especially in a war where you would expect the ambience of death, stress and war crimes would make people more likely to go to extremes. In action and philosophy. Gameplay is mid because classes like lancers and snipers are unreliable due to their low ammo and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shocked this has a 89% recommend. The story honestly sucks (the macro idea is okay if not a bit generic) and people were hyping this up as the best in the series? Yikes. Even by anime standards this is pretty braindead to listen to and the vast majority of character development feels unearned at best. The emotional scenes were almost laughable because it felt like we barely knew these characters (and they weren't particularly interesting anyway) and don't get me started on the "tactical"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally, I advise against buying this game. It is simply poorly programmed, confusing, and endlessly dragged out—all of which is, by and large, unnecessary. You’d be better off spending your time on something more worthwhile. Do not buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay is a blast, but the story is horrendous. If you're a fan of the genre of gameplay (XCOM-like, with shooter elements) then it's worth a go. Also, if you're Jewish, be prepared for some WILDLY strange-at-best choices for a WWII alt-history setting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 before I played Valkyria Chronicles 4 this would easily have been a 9/10 or higher. Very solid entry but some normal JRPG cheesyness in the story, but still an excellent game. A ton of fun with the fights even if the first time through you have to grind a bit to level up soldiers and gear. Highly recommend playing, it a steal on sale and bundling with 4 is even better as 4 is best in serries.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Valkyria Chronicles 4 and decided to give this one another chance. Unfortunately, no. The game has issue. The combat is not fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game and story with a great mix of tactical combat and visual novel storytelling, especially considering its age! Holds up very well. The setting being an alternate world's WWII with differing technology is both intriguing and whimsical. Solid 8.5/10, with a point dropped for poor menu setup (e.g. having to leave the battle setup and go through several menus just to change squad members or loadout), and the other 0.5 pts dropped for the god-awful final battle alone!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit Aged game, port isn't the best, but still runs well enough. Good story, unique (for its time) mechanics honestly cannot ask for too too much more... There's a reason it started a mini-franchise.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you've seen any memes surrounding XCOM, the same applies to this game. Your units will miss the broad side of a barn constantly and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. Unless you're able to see down the enemy's throat, every single point of damage is a gamble where the house always wins. It's annoying, it's frustrating, it's infuriating. There is zero satisfaction to be had in the combat. But the real reason I stopped playing this game is because the localization is APPALLING.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Marking as "I Don't Recommend" due to three chapters (7,14,15) having terrible game design, where you're supposed to "approach it differently" but has no direction on what to do, and it hit by trigeering events mid-combat, making for a frustrating gaming experience. Actualy won those by doing some cheese strategy like positioning units before enemy spawn and save scumming. The Good: - Liked the story, plot twists and character development - Gameplay is great when it's not BS - Reminds me of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i played this way back in the day and wasnt sure it would hold up, its still amazing, the game plays like your 'band of brothers' with permadeath of characters and a heavier tone, there is alot of talking between game scenerios but the story is pretty good
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite the masterpiece. Nice story. Replay value. (Don't feel like playing it again anytime soon) Fun game-play. Sadly, it still has weakness from being a console game, some minor game-play issues, menus being bad, slow animations and time consuming stuff, etc... However, nothing major, still fun to play, if you want to restart a mission quickly just go back to the title screen. Some stuff is very cryptic, game mechanics and some battle mechanics are not properly explained.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably my favourite game ever since I first played it. It's pretty much anime WWII and you're playing as pseudo-netherlands (I guess?). It's nearly perfect in every way, with a few minor flaws. Those being, if you want the best score you just speedrun with the most OP scouts and orders. Grinding potential from units is a bit of a chore but I didn't find it too annoying. And if you overwrite your main save during the DLC your save is hardlocked and you have to make a new one. Accidentally…

Ill admit, I'm not the biggest turn based gamer in the world BUT out of the few that I have played none of them are even remotely similar to Valkyria Chronicles. Not only that, but I cant fathom that this game is nearly 20 years old. It has that "unc" game charm but its virtually flawless. The only gripe I can pull out of my bum is that the learning curve is a bit steep. Anyway some of my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bottom line, Valkyria Chronicles is a fun and uniquely stylized take on the turn-based format. I was originally introduced to this series via VC2 on the PSP which I grabbed solely based on it looking interesting with very little idea what it actually was. After spending quite a while completing that (there's some rough levels) I decided to snag the original, albeit on a steep discount from an external site which I doubt steam will let me mention - you know the one. Anyway, the game is a…

As usual, the introduction sets the tone with just a couple of sentences that give the reader some basci info. In short: It’s a great game for fans of Japanese tactical games and themes. The graphics leave something to be desired, the translation is terrible, and there are some questionable aspects… However, Valkyria still deserves at least an 8 out of 10 for its unique gameplay mechanics and a pretty…
