What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 262 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,265 of 1,381 positive).
Players praise Verho as a standout King's Field-like with rewarding exploration and atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note issues with voice acting, UI polish, and balance for magic builds. [1][4][5] The demo's save transfer and generous content are widely appreciated. [6][7][8]

I wrote a negative review for this earlier on into the game, but in the spirit of fairness, and because many people genuinely seem to like it, I decided to push through my early frustrations to see if there really was a golden nugget in there by the end. So here's my new review having beaten the game. Verho is a complex nut to crack. At parts I found it truly inspired in its design, and there really are so many …

If you liked Lunacid, Dread Delusion, or just want a fresh modern take on King's Field then this is an insta-buy. Tons of content and rewarding secrets, making it very re-playable as builds are super fun to experiment with and tweak. The story and world building are nice and intriguing, however the one and only gripe I have with the game is the VO, which shatters any immersion and vibes you were getting when …

Wow, what a breath of fresh air. Kingsfield-likes are getting popular since Lunacid and this is the best one I've played so far. Highlights: + Exploration and secret-finding is central to the experience. You are allowed to get lost but there is cryptic direction if you talk to the right NPC. + Despite looking like a game from a simpler era, the developer came up with some interesting level design with plenty of …

If you enjoy Lunacid and you enjoy Souls games, you'll probably have a good time with this. The story has some surprisingly great twists to it and they're not all plain sight. Do you remember being a kid and playing through RPGs with no guide or wiki to help you and you'd find secrets and surprises tucked away in strange corners as you explored and experimented? It's got that kind of charm to it. It's not very …

A fantastic approach to bring players to the past feel of early From Software games. Whoever is familiar with the King's Field series will be at home in Verho, with the additional quality of life improvements. This tiny studio put a lot of passion into this game and you will know it from the very beginning.

Players who liked Verho - Curse of Faces talk about excellent exploration with meaningful rewards; those who didn't talk about voice acting can break immersion. Which matters more to you?

60 of 343 · most liked firstSomething I regret about my Game of the Year 2025 video was not including Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist and Verho: Curse of Faces in the honourable mentions, there's a lot of games I had to cut from the list because otherwise the video would never get done, but these two still kinda sting.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I finished Verho: Curse of Faces last night. All in all, I really enjoyed the game. Everything felt amazing right up until that final dungeon XD I've got a new hate for the colour green and I now need to go do a better ending >:u

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately there is no neutral review. There is plenty of praise made by the others, and there certainly is good in this game, so I'll focus on negatives. - Hitboxes for enemy aoe skills are communicated extremely bad. Tells in general are hard to read and not in a good way. - Sacred mission of most characters is to dump their backstory on every new face they meet, it seems. - Overall, there is lack of polish on lots of different things: UI, sounds, screen transitions (i.e. you can still…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't think I can in good conscience recommend this game. I am a sucker for King's Fields-likes and count Lunacid among my favorite games ever. And while I had an enjoyable enough experience playing through a good chunk of Verho, I have three major qualms with the game that aren't the type of problems that can easily be patched out later (like the terrible dialogue volume mixing, good lord it's bad). For one the game's exploration is extremely linear and the level design is unfortunately…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR A very solid take on Kings Field with some big balance problems. As a dungeon crawler, this game oozes atmosphere. There are plenty of fun areas to explore, filled to the brim with dangerous enemies, some light puzzles and lots of ways to die. The gameplay loop boiled down is exploring areas, killing enemies for xp and drops to get stronger. Repeat this till the end of the game. Loot variety is okay, Magic users will have a big drought until the final parts of the game where int…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game's actually really good right up until the last several areas hit you directly in the face repeatedly. Things go from being a decent enough challenge to being simultaneously so unfair and tedious to actually play that all the good momentum the game had built up to that point comes to a screeching halt. I didn't think a fun game in 2025 could have a final stretch as notably awful as Xen, but I was miserable when I found out that I was mistaken.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everyone talks about magic's limited range online and how limited it is. Its tied to FPS. Not fully, spells do have a max range. The difference between unlimited FPS and 17 FPS is nearly 10x the distance however. I spent 20 of my hours desperately trying to get magic to work, and the only way I figured out the issue was from remote play capping my FPS. Set your FPS to the lowest you can visually stand and you'll get much more mileage out of magic. It turned magic from essentially unplayable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Too much junk and clankiness. If you haven't yet played Lunacid or Dread Delusion - go play them. - Enemies can walk through walls (not just ghosts) - Can get stuck in textures (stairs when jumped on) - Can bug the You Died screen when alt-tabbing with multiscreen - Enemies, once notice you, will ALWAYS follow you no matter where you are on the level (applies to all normal sized ones at least) - If they can't reach you, ie you are on a higher ground. They will just attack. You will…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a pretty hard game, new enemies throw different things at you, and you have to figure out ways to outsmart them to make it easier. There are also YouTube content this game is released with which is pretty cute, and fun to follow along. The voice acting is serviceable. There are minor physics bugs where enemies can push you into walls, but this doesn't happen very often in my experience, but frustrating if my progress is reset. It's pretty hard to get lost, routes are typically split and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a Kings Field like, but the thing I find myself most wanting to compare it to is Frogmonster. Arenas are big, your move speed is pretty quick, and later bosses start turning into touhou patterns. There's also not as much freedom to explore laterally as you'd get in a Kings Field---there's often one path, and you're on it. However, this all makes for a pretty darn good game. And that's without the full voice acting, clever writing, really interesting lore, and soundtrack that keeps making…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've never played a King's Field game or any of the so-called "King's Field-likes" before Verho: Curse of Faces, so I can't say how it compares to other games in the genre, but I really enjoyed my time with this game. Pros: + Excellent exploration with meaningful treasure (mostly weapons/spells) to find as rewards for exploration. + Interesting story, lore, world design, and characters + Fun combat system that allows for different builds (I played a magic build and really enjoyed the variety…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: Updating this review since I nominated this game for GOTY on the Steam Awards. Completed the game in about 25 hours and I still think about it two weeks later. The final grind to find everything was difficult as there are not a lot of articles or info about the game out there, but that is part of the fun. It reminded me of the early PS2 era where we barely had internet forums and computers as kids and you have to find out the secrets on your own. Great game and I will always love it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The exploration and level design are great but the bosses are honestly bad. Clunky hitboxes, attack timings that dont always line up with damage frames and tells that were not designed to work with the perspective / camera. I consider these kinds of foundational combat problems to be irredeemable sins in this kind of game, but if you are an especially patient sort, it has its strong points. If you are anything else it's probably not worth it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've got at least 30 hours of playtime on the demo. My tombstone is in the town fro reaching lvl 100 before game release. Life is good. Do you like games such as kings field or Eternal Ring? have we got a gem for you. Great dungeon crawler with unique story and rewards for hunting out corners!! Simple to figure out hard to master combat will leave you on your toes even with enemies you've faced plenty of time before. (I just suck at this style combat but i'm getting better) Definitely…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why is sheathing a sword so satisfying? On first glance it doesn't seem like one of the retro crawler greats, but half an hour in and it really feels like it has the sauce. As a previous reviewer mentioned, I think turning off voices is the play here, which is sad because someone definitely had to put the time in to do them. Maybe like a crunchy bitcrush so It can blend in with that retro filter? All that really matters is the game is good and you should buy it and support it because then more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's absolutely worth a look if you like Lunacid and King's Field style games. It's not perfect, the UI is a little "Unreal Engine" in aesthetic and the VA, while decent, definitely leaves a bit to be desired, but the real meat of the game is excellent. The atmosphere and combat are both superb, and more critically exploration is always rewarded, at first with some very cheekily placed starting weapon options and later on with some proper cool spells and gear. It's a real diamond in the rough…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games in this genre of Kings Field-likes. This and Lunacid are the best ones so far. The atmosphere and ambiance is perfect, and the music is a chefs kiss. The worldbuilding and lore is so very interesting and makes you imagine and play with it. Items hidden in plain sight and sometimes when you get to into hard to reach places, rewarding your exploration. Its so annoying when every item is in a chest. It makes the world feel more real. Example: finding a random axe stuck to…

Amazing atmospheric dungeon crawler some surprisingly good story bits, that get very fucking sad an incredibly well realized world with a cool premise that unfolds and expands as you delve deeper. PLAY IT 👁️👁️👍
positive · AI labelView post →This game could've been alright, the gameplay is ok, setting is pretty interesting, but it has so many bad game design choices... It's just tedious, you are constantly stuck without even a smidgen of understanding why and it ruins all the pacing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me get the bad stuff out of the way first: imo there's a couple of things that I think hurt the tone and pacing a bit, but I can't hold it too hard against what was otherwise a very fun and charming experience. It's extra impressive considering like 4 people made this game. You can really feel every ounce of love they put into it. The storytelling is engaging and earnest even when it gets clunky, there is a surprisingly beefy amount of content and gameplay depth, and I even felt a little…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This one really needs a "maybe" option. The first 75% of the game is great. The last 25% is a complete trainwreck. The game feels unfinished in its current form, everything after the castle obviously had less attention paid to it than everything else. EDIT: Changing this to a thumbs down based on the final boss, which is literally broken. You just die at random times during the fight without an attack even coming from the boss.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I won't even sugarcoat it. This game is terrible. The Lightfly enemy alone justifies a negative review. They clip through walls and push you through walls when they fly at you. It's janky madness. There's tons of hit boxes that linger after the attack is done and hitboxes in general usually extend like 50% further than their effect does. Combat consists of spamming the heal button and power attacks. Lots of instant 1-shot moves with no indication. This game having high reviews just goes to show…

neutral · AI labelView post →Played for more than 4 hours, was offline for some of it. This game stinks and I'm just going to bulletpoint a bunch of reasons why. - All the areas feel very small, so there's very very little sense of exploration. - Half the enemies in the game can clip through walls, even the non-ghost ones, which feels like an excuse not to program pathfinding as I don't think any enemy in the game has actual pathfinding. - Enemies *never* lose aggro. Once they've seen you they'll chase you forever…

neutral · AI labelView post →I played the demo for this and immediately fell in love with it. It's the kind of game that consistently delivers more than you expect, not less. It has all the sense of exploration and adventure of a souls-like, but doesn't mindlessly follow the formula, and does its own thing when it comes to many key aspects of the game. This game has a way of boiling many things down to just the essentials, whether it's graphics or mechanics, and seems simple at first, but you quickly discover that by…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+Has actual combat mechanics +Good sense of exploration and mystery +Decent amount of voice acting and okay music -Magic was powerful and fun to use in the first and last 10% but painful and underpowered for the rest. All of the weapon enchanting/ hybrid playstyle spells legitimately had no use cases for my 2 runs. -Very little world reactivity -Can't use sword magic or block with a torch out, many other "conflicting" inputs (It feels like purposefully outdated design in a bad way)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verho – Curse of Faces is a dark RPG inspired by games like King’s Field. It takes place after the Era of Solitude, in a world where people wear masks to protect themselves from the Curse of Faces. You explore the land of Yariv through slow, deliberate combat, puzzles, and a lot of environmental storytelling. Pros ✔️ The retro look works really well - It commits fully to that early 2000s feel, and I appreciated that it also gives you options to tweak things so it doesn’t feel punishing for the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't recommend it. Has potential early on, the cracks really start to wear in during the midgame, and then it completely runs out of ideas and you have a few hours of death march fighting reskins of the same enemies and bosses in horrible environments ahead of you. it has one idea for boss attacks and it spends it on the first boss in the game, so get ready to jump over a lot of shockwaves.

neutral · AI labelView post →If you enjoy games like King's Field and Lunacid, you will probably enjoy this. The level design is quite good, with lots of secrets to discover all over the place. Exploration is generally rewarded, too. The best items in the game can only be found, so it pays to be thorough. That said the game is definitely not for everyone. If you like fast paced button mashing combat, this game is not for you. If you like high end graphics, this game is not for you. But if you enjoy old school action rpg…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is excellent. I've never played Kingsfield, or the other-Likes referenced. I have played Dark Souls, but this feels pretty different from that in terms of gameplay. Some core concepts remain, but being a first-person hack-and-slash without rolling iFrames makes this a much different experience. Perhaps closest to Dark Souls 1, but still quite different besides. Ambitious scale for a small indie outlet. Twenty some fleshed out levels with dedicated gear, boss fights, collectibles,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hesitant recommendation, I do not recommend this game if you don't have much patience. This game has an interesting world, with lots of things to find and places to visit, enemy design is interesting but I feel as though it's also flawed from a gameplay perspective. My only significant issue with the game is its combat, which you'll spend most of the game engaging with heavily. Combat has a decent base, simple but engaging, it doesn't feel outright bad or anything, but it is riddled with minor…

neutral · AI labelView post →Just a solid Kings Field style game. Leans a bit more on Dark Souls influence in some ways than others. Gameplay is fun. Story is serviceable. There's a little jank here and there (really just a little), but if you're curious enough about this game that you're reading reviews then you probably already got a hint of that. If you played and liked Lunacid or Dread Delusion, then you'll probably like this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verho is not exactly the same as King's Field, and veterans of that series may find those differences aggravating. NPCs are pretty handholdy, very heavily hinting about where the player should go next - not their own personal questlines, which Elden Ring could have done with more of, but where the player should go. Whilst there are optional areas and exploration to be had - in fact, those optional areas nobody was telling me to visit were the absolute highlight of the game for me - the feeling…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rules. Plays faster than Kings Field, but far and away the closest thing to the feeling of wandering the lands of the Ancient City. Absolutely nails the vibes of the Fromsoft classics.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the game, the style, the music, the gameplay. If you love Kings field, lunacid, any oldstyle first person rpg then you will love this game. You have alot of flexibility in playstyles and respecing, while not something you can do willy nilly, is possible if you want to change up your gameplay style.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →King's field renaissance is here and I'm all for it. Even though there is some jank from time to time, this one is great!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verho – Curse of Faces is a surprisingly strong dungeon crawler for its price. It offers an engaging story, a beautifully crafted world, memorable characters, a solid soundtrack, and combat that’s both fun and challenging. The weapon variety and uniqueness stand out as well. If you enjoy games like Lunacid, Dread Delusion, or King’s Field, you’ll feel right at home here. That said, there are a few nitpicks worth mentioning: 1) Voice acting is serviceable. I know that having fully voiced…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is an absolute masterpiece. A great modern take on the formula of the King's Field games. The gameplay here is quite solid, with TONS of different weapons, some interesting off-hand equipment and a lot of really fun spells. My particular favorite mechanic being that in order to maximize damage, you have to release the button precisely at the time the charge bar completes, which is a very clever idea to incentivize you to use proper timing rather than running at an enemy with your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun. There is different builds, boss fights, good music, good design, good combat and a good story. What else is needed?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very true kings field-like, lots of charm and challenge without being overly punishing or obtuse
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Verho: Curse of Faces is out and it’s a ✨vibe✨ - if you’ve not heard of King’s Field (the PlayStation game not the golf course) then think of Verho as a PS1 era soulslike without the terrible controls but with the terrible graphics. positive · AI labelView post →Having played a lot of games on my PSX long ago I have a sweet spot for games stylized to fit that old look - and Verho executes that style really well. Having almost finished the demo on Steam Deck I'm glad that the full version delivers more content without breaking the saves. Trying a new run on a fresh 1-level character is also a really fun, clickery experience, and one that feel well even in more difficult locations (I still hate the flying enemies getting to me from behind the trees…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story (world and characters) are somewhat interesting, but the game is full of bugs, has issues with its combat such as pathing, hitboxes and collision glitches. The frustration caused by the gameplay makes the experience pretty weak overall, even with the narrative trying to carry the game ahead. It's pretty mediocre, grab it on sale, ideally in one of its many bundles if you REALLY enjoy King's Field & similar games.
