What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 91 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (115 of 139 positive).
Players describe it as an interactive book or visual novel that is more about storytelling than traditional gameplay. [1][2][3] Many find it a relaxing, immersive experience that evokes the feeling of travel. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the stories as dry, lacking depth, or the choices as inconsequential. My Experience I would've thought that I'd be an ideal player for this game. My wife and I have had wonderful experiences travelling in Paris and Dublin, and if it weren't for student loan debt, we'd travel a lot more. We have a world map on the wall in the dining room, with push pins representing both where we've been and where we'd love to go. I've never been very interested in twitchy, competitive multiplayer …

I don't write reviews, mostly because I don't think the opinion of someone approaching 60 years old is going to be at all interesting to the vast majority of steam users, but I had to make an exception for this game as it has moved me in ways that traditional games just don't. To begin with, I wouldn't actually describe this as a game, it's more of an interactive book, I've not come across anything else quite like …

What is this game? How do I know if it is for me? These were my initial concerns I had before taking a dive into Wanderlust Travel Stories. First of all, I would be reluctant to call it a game. You could probably describe Wanderlust by a sum of its mechanics just like you could reduce a good book to a sum of its letters. Such measure would not do either of them justice. Wanderlust is a unique and immersive travel …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wanderlust bills itself as a "bridge between literature and gaming". But it's less than a book and less than a game. Instead of harnessing the strengths of both, it instead suffers from the weakness of each medium. There are a handful of stories left for me to get through but I have no desire to do so.. It's impossible for me to put aside a decent book but this is pretty easy to discard. Wanderlust is made up of 10 travel stories, some quite long and some quite short. They're barely…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't know what to expect from this game. For sure it's something different. It's a fun little adventure. If you want a relaxed, story-driven game where you literally go around the world, this is the game for you. Writing is good, characters feel real, game mechanisms, art and sound layer supports well the bigger thought that (in my opinion) authors wanted to share. If you dream about life-changing adventures do yourself a favor and play this game. PS. I really appreciate the "reference…

I've played the first Civ game off a bunch of floppies... so quite a bit of gaming history up to now, 2020. I've played AAA titles, I've played the very best the 80's and 90's had to offer. I've played some absolute stinkers, and I've played games that are simply unplayable. My expectations are always set to medium/ low. Despite all of that experience, Wanderlust is still very…

neutral · AI labelView post →I normally like VNs, especially with choose your own adventure type decisions. However, the stories here are as dry as paint on an abandoned building. I almost fell asleep. I couldn't even make it to 1 hour of reading. The choices are of no consequence and I couldn't relate to the travel stories or characters. It seems that the intended audience for these stories are boomers / retirees. Plus the music is dull and the very few photos included look generic. I can't recommend this experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good idea spoiled by a flawed execution. Would have left a neutral ("meh") review, if there was such an option. Very few of the stories are actually interesting. Short summary of most of the stories: West bad, East good. Europe bad, Africa good. Men bad, women good. Just kidding (but not really).

If you do or know somebody that has a hand that is not represented (Skin shade, prosthetic, nails, etc), please send me a DM. I would love to include it in the game. #playdate #indiedev #gamedev

neutral · AI labelView post →For a game that markets itself as "a bridge between literature and gaming", Wanderlust Travel Stories unfortunately falls shorts on both fronts. The main problem I have with this game is that the stories and characters lack much depth or complexity. I only played two stories out of four: Martine in Thailand and Bangladesh, and Tomek in Europe. Martine's story was the first one I played. There were a few moments where I felt weird out or shocked by some of the options. Martine is a German…

I was vaguely aware of them but presumed they'd been added mostly for those who were more used to that UI convention: not something long-time users of Emacs might really need but Emacs (as usual) trying to accommodate all types of usage styles or preferences. But, trying it out the other day briefly out of curiosity, I noticed that tabs could hold their own window configuration/layout (which, like, makes sense but hadn't dawned on me). And I started thinking…

All the features that make you feel like you're in control of the story, options for different routes, attires, spending choices become either completely written out, or so strictly scripted there's barely any room for choices that matter in future stories. the fact they picked the one that provides its players with the most freedom as a demo…

Overall I'd say the game has a really slick look - I dig it. Structure and general vibe are super similar to 80 Days, so if you liked that game, Wanderlust won't disappoint. Looking forward to playing more :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The stories are well-written, but they get a little preachy sometimes. (All the time actually) You can't really make amoral choices (shark-fin soup aside, and even that was used as a moral lesson), and there's a strong focus on all the problems in other countries and less focus on how nice it is to visit and enjoy. There is also the fact that, despite traveling, somehow the main characters always talk to other tourists instead of locals. It makes no sense to me. Is this how normal people…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is nothing more or less than a glorified visual novel about a bunch of world travelers sharing stories with each other while touring Easter Island, with some elements of a choose-your-own-adventure story. But it's a darned nice one, IMHO. -Positives- Graphical display/layout: Look, it's not going to win any graphics awards as it is a combination of a (decent) world map with a moving icon on it showing your travel (and sometimes latitude and longitude) and the rest of the time showing…

Overall, Wanderlust: Travel Stories is a very pleasant, calming experience, one that feels as though it should be played in the same way one might curl up with a good book. Both the stories and broader narrative are interesting and it is a strong interactive novel, however, there are additional gameplay elements and mechanics integrated with just enough subtlety. Destination, travel methods, interactions and even choice of clothes can affect both character…

It turned to be a mistake of a kind as 3 hours later, only after finishing two stories I was finally able to exit the game and get back to work. The game is different than most games and it is an interesting experience - more like reading an interactive book than playing a game. I like challenges in the games, and still, I was not bored by Wanderlust - despite the slow pace and no danger, there was…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are a lot of issues and I do not know when to begin. Firstly I really enjoyed the mood system, equipment system and money tracking in the Thailand story. However, this is only true for some of the stories. For much of the stories, money, clothing and mood are no different. I wish the mood system, clothing system and money tracking system can be implemented in other stories. The African story is another issue for me, its too long and too boring. It just summarised all the countries into…

A chill journey through other people's journeys. If you like to read, ideally National Geographic, and you're interested in the human aspect of the world, be it center stage or just as an undercurrent of a flowing tale, Wanderlust is for you. It's an interactive story made with a lot of heart mixed in.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More than the sum of its parts On the surface it's underwhelming: some text, some photos, music. But I got actually hooked on these stories. I liked the variety and the fact that the choices are minor, because this way they seem real. I don't choose whether to save the planet or doom it, but if I should try eating a fried bug or not. Plus, the atmosphere is spot on, which is due to writing, photos and soundtrack. SOUND IS GREAT IN THIS GAME, don't underestimate it. When you read about a…

I also found it really interesting the diversity in ways you can engage with choices. Sometimes its not an important choice and other times its about morality and safety. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i'm ambivalent about this game. it has clear influences from inkle's 80 days, but boasts neither the level of depth, replayability or writing quality to make it worthwhile. its a neatly presented but rather dull travelogue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic, mellow game. Text based, but the still photos and the background sounds and music combine to create an evocative treat for the senses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At this point, I've only logged 2 hours in the game, but This game is so exquisitely written and so well crafted with regards to its ambience - this might be one of the best pieces of interactive fiction I have ever played. At the end of the day, there is a LOT of writing - and it is frustrating to see an English person use words like "mom" and "ass" instead of "mum" and "arse" - but everything else works so well for me; it earns a lot of sures from me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So this game is about reading, and you choose A or B or C. But the twist is: it's not even the story that changes, it's usually the reaction of your character. This surprised me quite a bit as it's far from what I see as choices in gaming. It's very... Shall I say introspective? The writing flows well enough so the stories don't feel like they're overstaying their welcome, even though they ARE long. And I think it was a good decision to make a selection of stories instead of just one long…

It's not quite what I've expected - I certainly did not expect the stories to touch me on a personal level, and make me feel such vivid emotions. I've also been caught off-guard by how much I wanted to go on the same journeys the characters went - warts and all.
