It not a bad game all together. i like the overall theme and all. Granted the sound cues are repetitive at times and the camera angle can be annoying but nothing that would warrant a dislike. The real reason this game has been disliking it is due to its bugs. Sometimes they're minor, sometimes they're just straight up game breaking. There's the usual sound cue playing too late or message to late. Perfectly normal …

Looks like a Mike Mignola comic made game. - The combat encounters are fun, and the variety in weapons is decent. Cons: - Very, very grindy. - Long sections of needless walking. - Clunky.

Overall: 7/10 Story: In West of Dead, you step into the boots of William Mason, a marshal who meets an untimely death at the hands of a shady, corrupt preacher and finds himself stuck in purgatory. What follows is a gritty, supernatural Western revenge tale with you blasting your way through various procedurally generated dungeons to get your shot at justice (or vengeance, depending on how you look at it.) The narrative isn't overly complex, and honestly, it doesn't need to be. It’s a…

Man, does this game try to give itself a bad rep. I enjoyed my time in West of Dead. The gameplay tries something new with the cover mechanic; sometimes it's great, other times it's unbearable. They could have given more freedom to the player by allowing them to crouch instead of automatically getting into cover when it's possible. But the shooting felt good, enemies felt fair, and there's some variety of them, as there are of weapons and abilities. The art direction and the atmosphere it's…

I agree with many of the complains negative reviews have posted. While I do like this game, it has absolutely no respect for your time, there is so many long and annoying dialogues that you have to skip through if you wanna get back to actually playing. and it’s roguelike mechanics are heavily lacking. It’s got many fun systems but the player’s strength doesn’t change all that much when compared to the increasing difficulty, and it takes so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long to actually complete a run. I have…

TLDR: I find the narration, setting and style very charming, but gameplay feels lacking and linear. A surpsingly good roguelite game flying under the radar. The shooting feels satisfying and intentional, the enemies are nicely varied and there's a bunch of interesting guns. It doesn't invent anything new, but it does the basic gameplay really well, with barely any missteps. I played 3-4 hours and each death I feel I was robbed. I started with mouse and keyboard and then I changed to controller, the outcome is the same. The cover system is so infuriating that it is insane. How many times have I tried to run and the character just sticks to the nearest box and either eats bullets or a melee attack. You can't even see how many more hits your cover can take before crumbling and oftentimes you end up with an arena where every cover is damaged with enemies that can…

West of Dead, developed by Upstream Arcade and published by Raw Fury, is a roguelike twin-stick shooter that carves out its identity through atmosphere and restraint rather than sheer speed or complexity. Set in a bleak, purgatorial vision of the American frontier, the game places players in the boots of William Mason, a deceased gunslinger with a burning skull, wandering through a shifting underworld in search of answers about his past. The narrative is intentionally fragmented, delivered…

Horrible camera, main character falling under textures. 3 times I got to the final boss with a perfect full set, but stupid bugs ruined the whole experience, getting stuck in the texture, falling through the edge. And you get restored to the boss arena UNDER ARENA and ... DIE! HORRIBLE developers.

It was a satisfying bit of time playing this, but not enough to fully complete it. It's a good time just enjoying the atmosphere and look of the game, and satisfying to gun down enemies. But so many items feel very weak that I regret unlocking them and adding them to the itempool, and it feels like such a waste to keep walking through long empty hallways and taking like 10 seconds to teleport back to warp-points. Interesting Roguelite action RPG but in a field with so much and some very tough competition, I don't think it does enough. The art style is nice but often just just serves to make see harder then it should be. The cover mechanic is okay but also frustrates as much as it helps. The auto aim misses probably more then it actually targets the enemy 2 ft away from you then it should (also tutorial mentions melee for enemies to close to shoot...I was inside some enemies and still shooting). Short and sweet, a simple art style that looks PHENOMENAL with nvidia HDR, good sound design, combat is slower and deliberate, the game has flaws, and is clunky on the odd occasion, but this was oddly refreshing after a streak of awful games clearing out the backlog. TL;DR -- Imagine Hades but its a cover shooter, roguelike elements are massively reduced, its more about the gunplay with small buffs (except those perks, those are mandatory)

It's a slower paced roguelite, which many people may find antithetical to the genre, but I really do enjoy it. It can get a little repetitive quickly after the first few runs due to weapon variety not generally changing strategy. No matter what your setup is, you're going to be weaving from cover to cover and shooting during an opening. That said, the weapons are generally very satisfying to use. There are very few cases where you're only dealing chip damage. They are slow and brutal, perfect…

West of Dead is a beautiful game, clearly made with love, that sadly didn’t get the care it needed. Let’s start with what works. The art direction is stunning, and what feels frustrating at first quickly reveals itself as part of the gameplay once you learn to work with shadows instead of fighting them. The soundtrack fits the mood and level design really well, and Ron Perlman does a great job setting the tone with his narration. The story itself isn’t particularly interesting, but that’s not…

7/10 West of Dead has an amazingly unique art style that I really enjoyed. The art style - along with the music, writing, and voice acting - also excellently lends itself to creating a very strong atmosphere. It's a dark, gritty, evil western shoot-em style of game with a few roguelike elements. Unfortunately, I think that is the weakest part of the game. The roguelite elements at first provide meaningful progression (unlocking the healing potion, runes, etc), but soon it turns into just…

Purgatory has a sheriff Welcome to Wyoming, lord’s year 1888, a place and a year of little consequence, since you are dead and currently taking the very first steps into saloon called afterlife. Hell, the year probably meant to convey where the stylish poncho and revolver at protagonist’s hip are coming from, namely the setting of the game is Western-themed. However pardner, as you will soon find out, the purgatory is little rough around the edges like that. Perhaps even not so little. We will…

Hmm. This is basically a 'Hades' like but not recommended due to sameyness. 'Hades' had better variety in scenery, music, characters, weaponry, tactics, and a much better story. Looping in 'Hades' didn't feel much like looping. Looping in 'West of Dead' feels like, 'Oh, not this all over again!'. Also apparently to reliably get the true ending you have to actually do a run through where you unlock just about everything so you can get some RNG NPCs (lost souls) to turn up in reachable…

Love the style. Incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buggy. Can't go a single run without falling under the map or have the outlaw get stuck on something in the intro making me quit and restart.

In West of Dead, I had a bug where after beating a boss one time, it didn't finish the stage and borked the run. That's in a rogue-lite, where I could just start a new short run. People will defend game-ending bugs in massive Bethesda projects though. Skyrim got away with too much, now its 'normal'
