Wolfenstein 3D
Developer id Software
Wolfenstein 3D is a 1992 first-person shooter game developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software and FormGen for MS-DOS. It was inspired by the 1981 Muse Software video game Castle Wolfenstein, and is the third installment in the Wolfenstein series. In Wolfenstein 3D, the player assumes the role of Allied spy William "B.J." Blazkowicz during World War II as he escapes from the Nazi German prison Castle… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 183 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,093 of 4,381 positive).
Players widely regard Wolfenstein 3D as the grandfather of first-person shooters. [1][2][3] Many recommend using the ECWolf source port for better controls and resolution. [4][5][6] Some find the game has aged poorly, with maze-like levels and frustrating difficulty. [7][8][9]

UPDATE: I have now beaten all six (6) episodes of Wolf3D and its 90 % recycled assets copy Spear of Destiny. In summary, the game gets drastically worse towards the later expansions, Spear of Destiny being void of originality and over-drawn. In practice, you will be seeing the same textures and even chunks of level design over and over until you start to experience sensory deprivation. That is quite bad in a game …

It's Wolf 3D. The original. The grandaddy of all FPS. Playing it today kinda sucks but I can't downplay the raw importance of this game. Plus, it's the reason Doom happened. Yippee!!

The original FPS that started it all, Wolfenstein 3D is still just as fun today as it was back then. Play as William "B.J." Blazkowicz, an allied spy during World War II, breaking free of a Nazi German prison located within Castle Wolfenstein. Blast your way across six episodes containing ten levels each, with the goal of finding an elevator to the next level or defeating a boss. A handful of enemies will bar your …

Originally I didn't recommend buying this game. Not because I think it's a bad game or anything. Not at all. I think Wolfenstein 3D is a good game that anybody who's a fan of FPS games should try out at least once to see where it pretty much started. It's just that the Steam version gives you the DOS Box version, which isn't the best way to play (bad controls and low resolution). The reason I'm recommending this …

Wolfenstein 3D is a very simple game, but sometimes that's exactly what you are in the mood for. Wolfenstein 3D is an enjoyable experience for the most part. The first 3 episodes are great. Watching Hitler melt in to a pile of blood was glorious. The last 3 are mostly frustrating. Some of the floors are too big and on the Bring 'em on difficulty there are just too many enemies. You die insanely quickly, often you …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The developers had no clear expectations for Wolfenstein's commercial reception, but hoped that it would make around US$60,000 in its first month; the first royalty check from Apogee was instead for US$100,000. The game was selling at a rate of 4,000 copies a month by mail order. PC Zone quoted a shareware distributor as saying Wolfenstein 3D was the top shareware seller of 1992. By the end of 1993, sales of the Apogee episodes of Wolfenstein 3D as well as Spear of Destiny had reached over 100,000 units each, with the Apogee game still selling strongly by the end of the year as its reach spread without newer retail titles to compete with it for shelf space. By mid-1994 150,000 shareware…

neutral · AI labelView post →this is also conceptually funny because like the only reason to play SNES Doom is to see the impressive feat of getting a cutting edge PC game running on hardware that just barely handles Wolfenstein 3D making it HD 60FPS with KB+M just means you're playing someone's Doom clone instead of real Doom

I love some of the details, like how they're still not quite sure what to call it with its first-person perspective and 3D graphics so it's a 'virtual reality' game.

It's a nice throwback to a beloved classic, and it's really fun too! The game makes references to other media and internet culture as well, it's cool to see!

Released as shareware (first episode free and you bought the rest) on May 5th 1992, this 'virtual reality' game, as it's described here, laid more groundwork for a generation of first-person shooters.

It's one of those cute of-the-time things to see first-person shooters and perspective games described as 'virtual reality' as FPS hadn't been coined yet. Uncanny valley, with the Wolfenstein logo in such a futuristic font 😅
neutral · AI labelView post →Now on SNES in '94: Wolfenstein 3D. A game that felt wild at the time to see pop up on a Nintendo console. I like how the better-than comparison is to the FPS sections of Ocean's Jurassic Park game, which really would have been the first some peeps would have experienced anything FPS-ey.
neutral · AI labelView post →in 1993 a 17 year old kid played Wolfenstein 3d and really said "huh, can i make this?". So he made a similar engine for his game called Ken's Labyrinth. Later on the continued improvements to the engine led to Duke Nukem 3D, BLOOD, and Powerslave/Exhumed (PC)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah! Why are modern games so political?! The classics were so much more nuanced. I remember when Wolfenstein 3D came out.... My favorite part playing that game was how ambiguous the creators were about the inspiration for the bad guys.

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is fun, it's a classic. But I genuinely have one complaint (which is really just because of my setup tbh) This game was NEVER meant to be played on large monitors. The gameplay makes me feel sick and tires me out after just 20 minutes. I really do like the game, I just can't stomach playing it too much because I'll get nauseous. This is definitely a game you should take slow and play in small bursts if you get easily nauseous from gaming

I personally have no issue of just playing it as is (I`ll go through a full-run of the game that way) but for those that want to play it in an updated form, ECWolf will do wonders for you!
