This is a fantastic ode to the early XCOM games. It feels to me like it has a lot more mechanical depth than the XCOM reboots. The atmosphere is wonderfully bleak, the writing is very good and there is a palpable sense of tension throughout the whole experience. I completed it on soldier difficulty, iron man mode and ended up losing 23 Xenonauts to some 463 aliens. This difficulty level is balanced in such a way …

Being a fan of the originals, I enjoyed it. Xenonauts 2 seems to be closer to a remaster of the first game rather than something new. There were some interesting plot and geoscape ideas to keep things fresh, but they seem underdeveloped somehow. After the initial game phases, the narrative and the new elements pull back, and you are more or less back to playing Xenonauts 1 with newer graphics. It is as if the time …

Xenonauts 2 surprised me after playing the first game, but it still hasn't reached the phenomenal heights of the original X-COM: UFO Defense, Terror from the Deep or Apocalypse. In some areas, it is exactly what it needed to be, but in others, there are a lot of downgrades, questionable design decisions, and a feeling of cheapness. The Positives: 1. The 3D Graphics Engine: It is great for this genre. While it's not AAA-level, I really love the visual clarity and the increased detail compared…

I've played this a lot and supported the original kickstarter. But now... It's been in development for over 4 years, and remains little more than a clone of Xenonauts 1. The bloody air combat system has been a placeholder carbon copy of Xenonauts 1 for years and they've only just started to make revisions. There's only 3-4 maps per biome which gets stale really fast. Constant delays and bugs have slowed all real progress to a halt. They don't even say anything when they sail past their…

EDIT: V1.0 07/5/2026- I have now finished my full first run and messed around a little. As foreword, this game is soo close to being excellent. I initally gave this game a disservice my comparing it to Xcom EW Long war. As i played on i saw my error and acknowledged it as a comparison to the base Xcom EU/EW experience. It is a really solid game with great depth. I had a lot of fun, and had some normal "thats xcom baby" moments. So I don't ramble forever i'll put my key notes below. These…

The original Xenonauts released with an engaging story, competent mechanics, and improvements to issues the Xcom reboots had with their design. It wasn't a perfect game, but it was a must play for any fans of the genre. Xenonauts 2 by sharp painful contrast is "We have knock off Xcom at home," and it is so much worse in nearly every regard. Do you enjoy fighting the RNG as you watch guns not function like guns that are aimed by people with worse aim than a random person grabbed off the street…

I've tried to get to grips with this one but the lack of information you are given and the all seeing AI really prevent me from enjoying it. I love the style of the game, the artwork is great, the story is fun, the lore is a good read, its just a shame that the tactical battles let it down hard, which is where you will be spending most of your gameplay. For some context, I'm a self-described "Xenonauts Fan". I've beaten Xenonauts 1 on the hardest skill multiple times. I've almost beaten X-Division, twice (essentially the "Long War" mod for Xenonauts 1). And now I've finished Xenonauts 2 on release, again on the hardest skill. I want to give this context not to brag, but to show that I'm pretty intimately familiar with this game series and its mechanics. Xenonauts 2 is not a bad game, nor is it worse than Xenonauts 1. Just completed my first campaign on normal difficulty. If I had to describe it in a word... uninspired. I don't understand how it took so long to make when It's basically a graphical upgrade over the original and that's about it. There's very, VERY little new here. Equipment and aliens are mostly either rehashes of what you've seen in OG xcom or pretty much directly ported from Xenonauts 1. The few things added seem to have basically been ripped from modern XCOM (i.e. SHIVs/a temporary human…

It’s clear that this game is going through an identity crisis. Developers drew a great deal of inspiration from the modern XCOM 2 and tried to incorporate some of its mechanics and design choices into Xenonauts. There’s nothing wrong with inspiration itself - it’s what has led to the creation of many new and amazing games. Problem is that every source of inspiration should be accompanied by a coherent concept, and this game sorely lacks one. It’s easy to spot moments where developers wanted to…

Where xenonauts 1 had identity (blue uniform cold war soldiers vs technologically advanced aliens), xenonauts 2 lacks it (futuristic everything, no tanks/APCs from the first installment, portraits look out of place) Lacks identity and art direction, but some things look sleek (planes for example), but still, it doesn't look like bootstraped alien technology with human technology, everything you unlock looks sleek and out of place given time you spent R&Ding it. The difficulty in this game is complete garbage. Missions where you have a certain amount of time to do anything is so unfair. You are barely given anytime to complete any objectives before the game swarms you with enemy reinforcements that can move and shoot way more than your own troops can, at higher accuracy. Oh, you didn't complete the objective of destroying 10 computers and bringing back their data with only 7 turns? Boom, you are severely punished by the game spawning 6-10 enemies every…

This game has LOADs of potential, but it is held back by very poor gameplay decisions, namely AI cheats. Every game like this, going back to X Com, has that issue of the "99% chance to hit miss" meme. Each one tries its best to have some sort of work around to keep the game intense and allow for some error. This game though just flat out cheats with no recourse. AI, even basic enemies on easy, will sometimes cross map kill your troops that are in cover in one shot, a shot your troops are…

Perfect game for anyone who likes turn-based tactics. It feels like a more mature version of XCOM, where you are actually weaker than a superior invading force. You will lose a lot of soldiers, even whole bases, but losses are replaceable and you grow with each battle. If you liked the original Fallout games, Battle Brothers, Menace, or just want something more brutal than XCOM, this is for you.

A complete improvement over the first game in every single way I can think of. The guns that your troopers use actually sound somewhat punchy compared to the airsoft guns your troops used in the first game, there are new mechanics and previous mechanics were overhauled to be even better. The graphical improvements are actually my favourite, the first game was entirely 2D with a fixed camera angle while this is completely 3D with free camera movement, so no more getting shot by an alien that was…

For everyone else, I would recommend checking out the first game, Xenonauts, and skipping this sequel. Review X2 Starts strong with some great new ideas. X-COM: UFO Defense (1994) is my favorite game of all time. I loved Xenonauts 1. Even with its technical limitations, it had charm and personality. Xenonauts 2 is a much more refined product, but I am saddened to say that, in exchange, it lost some of the charm, immersion, and personality that the previous title had. It seems that moving to a fully 3D presentation on a brand-new engine has turned the game into a much more generic experience, at least visually. The assets and textures in…

Mixed feelings here. This isn't a bad game per se: it plays well enough, is decently engaging and remains faithful (at least superficially) to the 'old' XCOM design direction. It unfortunately also betrays its own design quite ruthlessly with constantly contradictory decisions. For example: one would assume based on the squad size and the immediate lethality of combat that you are encouraged not to have a 'supersoldier squad' a la XCOM EW or 2, instead rotating multiple squads of injured…

Xenonauts 2 just left early access, and the v1.0 patch notes are ENORMOUS. Mostly balance. Sounds like they've made the early & late game a little tougher. It's a nice refinement over the first, which was like a polished up DOS-era XCom. Big squads and time units over Firaxis style boardgame design

another one of those situations where i wish there was a more neutral verdict - i am ultimately erring on the side of a thumbs up because games can be patched/updated down the line. it's... fine? it's ok? it's very not bad. but it's frustrating, and has parts that are, in my opinion, holdovers from classic xcom that exist here because they did there, rather than being actually engaging mechanics. aim/shot spread is one of them. i can live with statistical realities, as annoying as it can feel…

Having no experience with classic Xcom games, the game left a mixed impression. The size of the team and base management lean more toward the macro level. On the one hand, this makes tactical operations more large-scale, replacing the recognizability of each fighter on the battlefield with soldiers who are now just entries in a team table. The narrative setting of the invasion, divided into a underground conspiracy and a full-scale siege of the planet, is interesting, although somewhat empty…

Not sure why the review score isn’t higher. This is a great turn-based strategy game, like the old-school X-COM from the ’90s. Everything feels familiar, and the difficulty level is just right. Also, surprisingly, the research notes are actually enjoyable to read. In other games, the text is usually just plain boring, but not here. The background music and sound effects are just right—they enhance the experience without drawing attention to themselves. Great game.

Weapon damage spread is not familiar 10-20 percent, it's 50-150. You can waste an effort of the entire team to focus a single alien and fail due to unlucky damage rolls. Heh-heh, this contains a bit of my art that's in Xenonauts 2 game - see the little people in the bottom left and right? Some classic Me(tm) rim lighting going on. Modelled the console-greeble off photos of Cold War era military command/control rooms. The chairs, however, are Herman Miller.

OK, let's get the elephant in the room out. If you are fans of XCOM: Enemy Unknown or XCOM 2 games, this is probably not going to be the game you want it to be. It lacks the flashy cinematics, voice acting and 3A aesthetics of Firaxis' big budget productions. It is definitely in the low budget 'indie' camp of games. However, if you played the 90s X-Com games or the original Xenonauts game, you will find Xenonauts 2 a bigger, cleaner, prettier and more tactical version of those classic games.…

As a foreword: I have beaten Veteran Difficulty. I enjoyed my time with Xenonauts 2, but there is a massive problem that prevents me from recommending the game to others: The game is almost exactly identical to the original. Enemy designs are the same aside from some updates, weapons and tactics work the same as they did in the first game-smoke grenades & shotguns are still very strong. Mission structure is identical outside of some campaign missions at the VERY start of the game. The…

I’ve been playing turn-based strategy for decades, so I patiently waited for the Xenonauts 2 Early Access to conclude. After wrapping up my first campaign in about 40 hours, the verdict is in: a very solid game that earns a clear recommendation for genre veterans. Some disorganized observations: Visuals: It leans heavily into its retro charm. It doesn't offer the cinematic flair or kill-cams of XCOM 2, but it serves its purpose perfectly well. Mission Variety: Across 35 tactical missions,…

I really, really liked Xenonauts 2 despite bouncing off of the first one. Everyone who told me old X-COM was better was right, actually. www.pcgamer.com/games/strate...

A niche strategy game that fails to improve on its predecessor and instead doubles down on its flaws. Xenonauts 2 is a turn-based strategy game inspired heavily by UFO: Enemy Unknown (the original X-COM). If you’ve never played this type of game, here’s the core loop: On a global map, you manage bases, research alien tech, build equipment, and deploy aircraft. When incidents occur, you send a squad into turn-based tactical missions where positioning and decision-making are meant to matter.…

Just finished my first playthrough after owning the game since day one sarky access. I waited for it to be complete pretty much. What can I say my men were turned to puddles of blood on a variety of interesting ways. I'm missed 93% shots with a shotgun. The aliens won be inducing panic World wide... and loved every second. I'm the absence of Xcom 3 this is as near a perfect recreation of the orginal UfO enemy unknown as you will find. I encountered no bugs in my playthrough and will not wait…

It's difficult for me to not recommend a game after spending 100 hours playing it, but the very frequent crashes I experienced during combat sections were the deal-breaker. I really enjoy this game's tactical strategy, but hitting 3-6 crashes during a play session is not acceptable. Had I not ran into those technical issues, this would be an easy recommend. The game goes out of its way to pay homage (to the point of straight-up copying) the original X-Com from Microprose. If that's what…

As a X-Com veteran here is my review: - Considering the game have been in development for around 10 years it should be a lot more polished, have a longer storyline, more variation when it comes to missions, equipment, enemies and the different tecks. - The powerspikes in dps needs to be ironed out. Endgame soldiers maxed out with the best equipment can easily be killed by just one enemy. Or when UFO's suddenly blasts down three interceptors just because it is a *new phase* in the game and all…

Xenonauts 2 is a hardcore, old-school tactical strategy game that proudly carries the DNA of the original X-COM: UFO Defense. It’s not trying to modernize the genre for everyone — instead, it doubles down on complexity, tension, and unforgiving gameplay. Set in an alternate Cold War timeline, you lead a secret global organization fighting off an alien invasion. The game blends Turn-based squad combat, Global strategy management (bases, funding, research), Air combat interception, Persistent…

The game feels very close to the original X-COM idea, but the more you play, the less it manages to maintain that quality 😞 It almost feels like they spent most of their budget and effort on the beginning of the game, then had to rush everything toward the end 👎

It is as if the time budget ran out - but the project has been in development for many years.…

It's disappointing and boring. How old is the original Xcom? Xenonauts 2 brings nothing new but worse; what before was annoying but could be excused because it was 1995 now can't be ignored, like the overwatch snap shots messing up your team. Also, all loading screens take forever to load and the game has crazy hiccups during the the enemy round.

Dissapointing. As a huge fan of the XCom series I was expecting a similar experience and in fact it is bassically the same game... However... The game countdown is super fast and there is hardly any interaction with aliens before the world ends to a nuke. I think 1 or 2 missions may have prolonged the end but I felt like the game had only just begun. Both games I played finished within a couple of hours. The other thing that sucked, aliens (and mind controlled humans) had almost 100% accuracy…
