Xenonauts is an extremely disappointing game full of wasted potential. The strategic layer is excellent, and Xenonauts is the first XCOM-like to have an air combat system that is actually fun and engaging to play. However all of this is spoiled by the terrible tactical layer. Combat is extremely simplistic, with very few options to choose from other than positioning and shooting. Cover is sparse and ineffective, …

If you've ever wondered what X-COM: UFO defense might look like if it were remade with modern polish but without losing its soul, Xenonauts is the answer. The strategic layer is old-school. In brief: highly competent remake of Gollop's X-COM with solid community mod support. An understated classic, though probably too old-school for the younger generation. I ran a last-minute rpg for my (adult) sons and some friends last week. Four steelworker Vietnam vets in 1972 go deer hunting in Pennsylvania and encounter aliens. Concept came from younger son watching The Deer Hunter and then playing Xenonauts. Used GURPS. It was a fun game. No Russian roulette.

Xenonauts 2 just left early access, and the v1.0 patch notes are ENORMOUS. Mostly balance. Sounds like they've made the early & late game a little tougher. It's a nice refinement over the first, which was like a polished up DOS-era XCom. Big squads and time units over Firaxis style boardgame design

I have never played a game with more infuriating logic. All of the nations on earth are facing an alien invasion and they decide to give you limited funds like defense budgets are always underfunded like the US military has a 900 billion dollar budget and you can't secure a million dollars a year to fight off aliens. I can't manage to kill an alien from 3 feet away with a damn shotgun, but then somehow an alien on the other side of the map manages to snipe my soldiers. And somehow the entire…

It suffers from the same "Alpha Strike" issue as all IGOUGO game systems, where you can have a bunch of your dudes wiped out in a single turn because you have to waste your first turn moving to a place where you can see the enemy, but don't have enough time to shoot them. Then you have to take an entire enemy volley before getting a chance to return fire. Xenonauts also combines this with an incredibly short time to kill. Your dudes die in a couple of hits early game and several early game…

56 hrs ingame, tried it 2x. The game has some problems. The worst for me is the troop selection. In one menu, you have to select what troops on what dropship. In another menu, you have to select the items. But often the game does not remember these changes, so you leave the base or with the wrong troops, or with the wron equipment. And because you can see only the selected troops, you cannot strip weapons / armor from a wounded soldier to put them on another one. Would be simpler if…

One of my favorite tactics games, simply because it gives you a lot of freedom. For example, if you are in a rough spot it's entirely viable to stop trying to kill the aliens normally and just starting blowing them all up with RPGs (which destroys loot but hey your guys will survive). Also really enjoyed the final mission where my entire squad of elite giga-chads died to fight their way to the final boss, who was then killed by the one rookie on the mission before he too succumbed. Kino.

Classic XCOM is really fun imo, but it does suffer from some quality of life issues. It's possible to fix some of that with mods though and imo it still holds up. I've definitely put more time into the reboot of the series, but the original has a grittier feel, a bit more "open world," where you're gonna miss UFOs and you're gonna have to cut and run sometimes, and there's also a lot of exploits and tricks you have to figure out on your own (intended or otherwise). I'm no professional when it comes to this series. This is my first playthrough. Unfortunately, it does not match X-COM: UFO Defense, 2, or 3—even with X-Division and other overhaul mods. 1. The game cheats a LOT! I know, I know... Xenonauts (CE) was highly addicting for me. But this does not make it a good game. I have had fun with it. At times I think I like it, but I cannot in good conscience recommend this game for anyone attempting an XCOM style ironman veteran difficulty run. The critical problem with the game is it appears the dev(s) recognised a few elements of XCOM (1994) that needed improvement. Namely air-combat and squad tactics. A nice spiritual successor to the 1994 X-Com game. I enjoyed both the strategic layer and the tactical combat. Personally, I didn't care much for more detailed air combat but everyone else seems to like it a lot, and it's not like it is bad just an area I was less interested in. Any other issues I may have had were solved by the Community Edition, plus there is a lot of mods to let you tweak the experience. Don't forget to use the Community Edition: Right click -> Properties -> Betas -> Beta…

The game (Xenonauts) starts in 1979. It's based on the original X-COM.

Xenonauts 2 hits 1.0 after almost three years of early access [on both Steam and GOG] and paves the way for mods galore. The full launch also brings with it plenty of balance adjustments, tweaks, fixes, and changes. Xenonauts attempts to capture the magic of the original but often ends up feeling like a sterile military spreadsheet rather than a tense tactical thriller. While the Cold War aesthetic is solid, the gameplay is defined by peak frustration. No thanks

This games feels half baked. And before you know it they left it and start copying pasting to xenonauts 2. So i probably wont support it anymore. its really sad cause i really love xcom it had a big impact in my life

I want to love this game, but I can't. I started playing this genre with XCOM Enemy Unknown, and was drawn to Xenonauts as it did away with the artificial difficulty of the "group trigger" in XCOM EU, where spotting an enemy activates that group of enemies which immediately gives them free movement. This meant that if you triggered a group at the end of your turn, especially a group of Chryssalids, your whole strike team could easily get wiped out within 3 turns. Xenonauts doesn't have this…

Xenonauts is a tactical strategy game developed by Goldhawk Interactive that serves as a spiritual successor to the classic X-COM: UFO Defense from 1994. Designed to evoke the feel and challenge of the original, Xenonauts successfully modernizes many of the mechanics while maintaining the deep, unforgiving gameplay that made the early X-COM titles legendary. The game thrusts players into the role of commander of an international defense force tasked with defending Earth from an alien invasion…

No game makes me say stuff out loud quite like an XCOM, in this case, Xenonauts 2. "I'm sorry, on turn 2, you're shooting at me from *inside my own Skyranger*?"

Lacks the "sauce" to really sink your teeth into. If you're an X-COM nut, especially of the original MicroProse titles, looking for something to bring your special interest into the 21st century: This game is for you. If you have enjoyed the X-COM titles but also sampled the many spiritual successors and improved modern iterations of that formula, you will struggle to enjoy this game. It is a remaster of X-COM: UFO Defense in all but name, but where it improves on the original games…

I like it, but the game has some shortcomings. The aliens seem to lack a little bit of character. Even today i can recollect the sound of a gillman or and aquatoid's death scream. A tentaculat plopping in wet destruction. This game lacks that character. Weapons are very real-world equivalent, which might be good for some people, but i don't quite get the satisfaction. Gas cannons were meaty and powerful, jet-harpoons were weak but forgiving to miss with, I don't quite get any of that game…
