What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (540 of 664 positive).
Players praise the game's story, music, and Slavic folklore theme. [1][2][3] Many find the combat repetitive and the crafting system confusing. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the game's charm despite its gameplay flaws. [7][8][9]

The presentation of this game is excellent, but it is utterly joyless to actually play. I love the atmosphere and storytelling and the silly dialogue, the music had me jamming, and the art style is wonderful to look at, but the game's mechanics let it down, and let it down hard. The gameplay is painfully tedious - combat is dull and repetitive and doesn't have much depth. Hit detection/understanding when attacks …

When I was a wee lad some 28 years ago, my granma used to tell me stories starring a brave peasant-turned-warrior-turned-prince (there was ALWAYS one protagonist in these stories that fits this description) and various mythical creatures from Slavic folklore, sometimes in rhymes and sometimes outright epic prose, featuring many spectacular deeds, 'oh no' moments and (mostly) happy (and sometimes indeed bloody) …

A coven of crones gathers around a magic mirror to dabble in the fate of a one-armed blacksmith, Ivan, struck with the curse of bad luck. They spin his story as he journeys throughout evil-ridden lands to resolve a series of hopeless tasks handed over to him by the tsar. In this isometric action RPG infused with the spirit of Slavic mythology, you’ll form uneasy alliances, craft various tools and weapons, gather …

Yaga looks and sounds really good, with great music inspired by Slavic folklore, solid voice acting and the rhyming dialogue gives it a lot of charm but the gameplay just doesn’t keep up. Combat gets repetitive, hit detection feels inconsistent, difficulty is uneven and systems like crafting feel unfinished. In the end, it is a game with strong style but the actual gameplay is a letdown. 🎚️ Difficulty 🔲 My …

I haven't played the game much and usually don't write reviews this early in the game, but I just really like this game, so I want to make an exception. I was super excited to see a game based on Slavic folklore and have been waiting for it to come out. So far i love this game. It's pretty to look at and the music is great. The voice acting is awesome and the story is well-written.

84% of the 184 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Yaga. The complaint that keeps coming up: combat is repetitive and lacks depth. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

I finished several projects with AI assisting me in my work. As someone who has masters degree in AI (done before current AI craze) I really wanted to see the new thing in action, even though I knew it was over-advertised and over-hyped. neutral · AI labelView post →A mind-numbing, shallow experience. Yaga tackles themes of Slavic mythology, which sounds interesting on paper, especially since these themes don't get explored in media enough, but the execution in this game is done very poorly. The story is bland, there's nothing really happening to grab my attention, but that isn't the main problem. The gameplay loop and the mechanics introduced in this game are very poorly done. Combat is abysmal, it's boring, doesn't feel rewarding and isn't snappy or…

neutral · AI labelView post →I very much enjoy the graphics, the music, the voice acting and the story, however the game play, itself, becomes repetitive after the first few hours of play. Combat is messy and mostly a button mash. Enemy difficulty seems random - ranging from challenging to insta-death. The details on the effects of magic items are vague. It's not always clear to what the descriptions are referring. The crafting system is interesting, however, it's a resource sink and said resources drop randomly…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game. I loved the artstyle, music and dialog. However, the combat and crafting is not very good. There is a roguelite element to the game which is not mentioned anywhere. If you read the reviews, even the "recommended" ones, you will see that people have the same general sentiment about this game. It is too unnecessarily complicated. With things like bad luck, an unintuitive interface, non-rewarding crafting and unsatisfying combat, it is way too hard to recommend…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game! Story + voice acting is amazing and I enjoyed every dialog. The main story and the shorter ones were extremely funny to witness. The rhymes were also creative and well made, definitely a thing I won't forget any time soon. When it comes to the chosen music, I can say the same as above. Absolutely amazing so far! The only thing I don't like that much was the combat in the game. But that's the only negative point I encountered for myself.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a cool premise, with a bumping soundtrack, and a lot of lore to learn. But it's just the same exact game mechanics repeated over and over for each level on a map that only has a few variations and is reskinned every so often, with increasingly difficult enemies. It's not that it's not fun, it just gets old pretty quickly.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The games concepts are interesting, but sadly fall flat in execution. From boring maps that are the same throughout the entire game for the most part, to confusing systems that make the game seem like an annoying riddle you are stuck to solve. This game will frustrate you to no end. The maps do have random events, which are cool until you see that they start to repeat and you see the same events over and over. No skills in this game was another short coming. On the other side of this you craft…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The presentation and general concept of the game are great, but the gameplay is basic and stilted, with stiff controls, boring map layouts, and a lack of responsiveness in combat. There were often times I would take damage without realizing it until looking at my mysteriously lowered health bar as there was no noticeable response when I got hit. When making an action roguelike/lite, the two things that need the most attention are the map design and the feel of combat. Maps in this genre are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really charming world with great voice acting and characters from what I have played in over an hour. Tying progression to your character's attitude seems cool but doesn't seem to matter all that much. I tried it on the hardest difficulty and it was alright for the first two levels, I felt like it rewarded my careful positioning and use of resources. However, I can't bring myself to play pick this up again, combat seems repetitive and not really all that deep. I heard that it gets better later…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: A game with great Slavic mythology lore and engaging fun to listen story. The combat is fun and challenging. Uniqueish drawn cartoony style graphics. Cons: Almost un-enjoyable because of resource/crafting/currency/items/luck system: The good luck / bad luck system is confusing, as how to loose bad luck and what bad luck actually does is unclear, and it deters you from playing the game normally using abilities and items (to kite, deal damage, heal, etc.) The currency…
