Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Developer Nihon Falcom
Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a 2005 action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. An installment in the Ys series, it is a substantially reworked version of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, retaining its characters and Felghana setting while replacing the original side-scrolling gameplay with the three-dimensional action system introduced in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. The story follows adventurer Adol Christin and… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,012 of 2,146 positive).
Many reviewers note the game is very difficult, especially the bosses, and recommend lower difficulty settings. [1][2][3]

This game is an absolute turd. Skip it. The boss fights come down to a simple enough pattern but you must repeat the same janky animated combat pattern over and over and over and over for 10-15 minutes because they doubled the health pool of a boss. Your deaths from a boss will come from pure boredom. Yes, I was able to kill a boss taking zero damage. So this doesn't come from a place of "notgud". You also have one …

I could have sworn that I reviewed this game. I'm ashamed of myself. I must have gotten sidetracked. This game is one of, if not THE finest Ys games ever made. The soundtrack is perfect. The boss difficulty is perfect. The scope and the length is perfect. Nihon Falcom took the undisputed worst game in the Ys series and turned it into the best. This is how you remake a game that was initially bad. The controls are …

Ys: The Oath in Felghana — Review Ys: The Oath in Felghana is one of those games that reminds you why fast-paced action RPGs are so much fun. It takes everything good about Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim — the responsive combat, the great music, the sense of adventure — and sharpens it to perfection. It’s leaner, tougher, and more refined, often considered one of the best entries in the entire series. Originally a full …

Great game. Old, but still holds up. Plot is simple but well done, with pretty good VA. Gameplay is also simple but that's what makes it good, by not trying to do too much. The boss battles are pretty difficult, so advise playing normal or lower difficulties unless you reaaaally want a challenge. The music is absolutely phenomenal, peak Falcolm right there. I highly recommend! Except the flying enemies, f*ck those …

Don't believe this game's lies "Normal" mode is actually not normal at all and made me slap my own nuts 17 times. This game was genuinely fun to play though 8/10.

But surprisingly, it turned out to be a real diamond! The game is extremely friendly to newcomers to the genre and casual players like me. (I played the game on the third difficulty level out of the six presented) and for me the game felt comfortable, without any special difficulties with bosses. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything about this game is fantastic EXCEPT the bosses. They're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ abysmal.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is unrelentingly hard and, due to its dated nature, it took me a long time to figure out things that would have been a huge help earlier. Some bosses are downright ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and cheat. Overall this is a game where either you keep pushing against it and win, or you give up. I'm gonna be honest, if I'd been playing this game on my own time, I would have given up. But, you know, contracts and that sort of thing... I ended up really enjoying the gameplay and view this experience as…

positive · AI labelView post →Phew, old school shining through on this one. I played the original on the SNES and thought I'd get some nostalgia. Maybe I was wrong to put it on Hard, but the game is great if you like to be punished. The game is fun if you don't play on hard, otherwise the further you get the more of a gauntlet it's gonna seem. As an adult now I'm so glad these games are not like this anymore. I love this series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beat the game on Switch so we could take advantage of the (very valuable) QoL fixes of the Memoire version. The PC version doesn't have these. Originally known as "Wanderers from Ys III" when released in the US, Felghana was the first Ys game we got to play. It's actually - chronologically - the sixth game in the series. Adol has journeyed back to Felghana after leaving Celceta, and in the process, ends up with arguably one of the more compelling stories of the series. Couldn't stand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I could talk about how much I love this game. It is one of my favorite classics in the Ys series. It has one of my favorite soundtracks in the Ys library, the gameplay and graphics are quite an upgrade from the first two games, and it's addictive and fun. However.. instead of discussing all of that, let's talk about Cynthia. When you meet her she speaks like a 1-900 phone s*x girl, and with a smirk says, "That sword looks like it's seen a lot of action." Peak Ys girl. So yeah.. buy Ys Oath in…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ys: The oath in Felghana is a sprite based RPG, with hack-and-slash combat. You wade through mostly trash mobs, which is punctuated by hard boss fights, as usual for the series. Unfortunately, eventually it will also have increasingly difficult jumping sections, the very reason why I consider this game only suitable to skilled hardcore players (which I am not). The naming of the game difficulties is misleading. Very easy is story mode, easy is normal mode and normal is hard mode. I found…

neutral · AI labelView post →A fun blend of action RPG, metroidvania and I dare to say even a little bit of the rogue-like genre if you don't decide to be patient and just yolo everything until the next checkpoint. I expected the bosses to be harder, based on all the fuss about them – they were rather alright, imagine metroid bosses but made into HP sponges. The story and the characters were okay, the animation really well made, just like the soundtrack. As a newbie, I will be returning to this title and am planning to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another solid action-RPG from Falcom, with a focus on combat and some platforming. The good: It's short and sweet; I finished in 14 hours and that was about the sweet spot for this type of game. Good music and anime-style cut scenes. Chibi character designs are cute enough. Hack and slashy-combat is the rule of the day (ala Zelda). Hope you brought a controller. Difficulty levels. I played on Very Easy and the final boss still gave me a challenge. The meh: RPG progression and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Ys VI and Origin. The Napishtim Engine is great and I'd wish Ys V would get a remake here sometime soon. The combat of these games have an addicting feel, simple yet complex at the same time. So I was pretty hyped when I got to play Ys 3, a remake of the PC Engine game released back in the 90's. It ended up not being as good as VI and Origin. Like, at all. In some parts it was very frustrating. However, I did finish it completely. It's not, again, a "bad game". Because there's quality…

Adol can only wield 3 magic Bracelets -- They have Voice actors now, tho this one is only English, Chester's voice really into it. as expected from EN VA of Frieza, Adol on the other side brought his Narrator with him since he is still a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outside of a questionably designed final boss fight this is probably the best Ys game I've played thus far. The changes to the gameplay coming from Ark of Napishtim make it a much faster game that encourages quick movement between groups of enemies and keeping up multipliers of various stats and the new magic system is a big upgrade. Rather than slowly building it up over time it's a regenerating meter and all of the magic abilities now have some utility for exploration and/or movement. To…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another solid Ys title. I played through it on Normal difficulty. This is perhaps my least favourite of the 3 I've played (Napishtim and Origins being the other two). Unlike Naphistim & Origins, this one has voice acting. ..Unfortunately it is god-awful. Every character sounds over-done like they are acting in a childrens' book. Thankfully you can go into Options and turn the voice volume down to zero. The dialogue itself is alright, though as usual has some anime cliches. Far from the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completed Ys VIII with the True Ending. Took me over 30 hours or so. Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 6 were the best parts of this game. I wish Dana returns as a protagonist in a future Ys game. Loved using Adol's ultimate sword. Gonna play Ys IX next. 💙💖 #Ys #YsVIII #YsVIIILacrimosaofDana #NihonFalcom #Falcom
positive · AI labelView post →This was a fantastic game. And although I am not very good at video games i was surprised how many times i died on easy mode. Still the story is great and the small details like how very NPC's dialogue changes with story progression is just outstanding.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s okay, I can’t imagine going through this on nightmare tho. Also for a game all about Dogi’s homeland he should have been in this game more. He spends most of it climbing a mountain getting stuck at gorges and being unconscious. Bosses are easily the most annoying thing in terms of combat. Hope you like bullet hell bosses and being able to jump when there’s a bunch of ♥♥♥♥ on the screen. Honestly Ys Origins combat is better but it’s worth it if you like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: I've beaten the game now. I still feel like the bosses are too hard, and the controls make the platforming too punishing. This Ys is my least favorite, but it is still a Ys game and I'm glad I played it. If you are new to the series, start elsewhere. If you are a longtime fan looking to grab this one, understand that Very Easy is Story, and Easy is actually Normal, at least as far as what you are expecting. The game took me around 10 hours to complete. Maybe plan on having your first run…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I'd pick this up as an introduction to the Ys games. Either I picked the wrong one, or this series just isn't for me. This game considers difficulty to be a core asset but in my opinion doesn't offer satisfying counterplay for the challenges provided. My character has a shield, why not let me block? Why not provide a dash function out of the gate? I worry that modern action game fans will struggle to get past the 'clunk' and connect with this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the hardest Ys game in the series. Or from the accessible version. I've played Ys game from Ys I & II Chronicles all the way to Ys Monstrum Nox and this one beat me dozens of time. I even got an achievement for failing on a single boss more than 10 times. What makes this one hard you ask? Well If you come from the latest Ys games such as Ys X Nordics or Ys Monstrum Nox you will notice this one is very different. Unlike having lots of changable skill on 4 buttons, here you have 6 attack…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is probably my favourite Ys game out of the first five I've played from the available titles in steam (I, II, VI, OiF and Origins). It improves upon everything from Ark of Napishtim, featuring snappier combat, a cool magic system in place of the boring different swords, and an honestly fun story. Some of the bosses are absolutely brutal however, and difficulty wise, it's a huge jump from the last game, but its kind of satisfying to finally beat that one boss. Please offer the Memoire…
