Ziggurat
Developer Milkstone Studios
Ziggurat is a first-person shooter dungeon crawl video game developed and published by Milkstone Studios. It was released for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac in October 2014 after being available for two months in early access, followed by a release for Xbox One in March 2015 and PlayStation 4 in April 2015. What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,383 of 3,975 positive).
Players praise the fast-paced, smooth gameplay and roguelike elements, comparing it to classic shooters like Heretic and Hexen. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the game repetitive, with limited enemy and map variety, and uninspired level design. [4][5][6] A few players note technical issues like bugs and lack of updates, affecting their enjoyment. [7][8]

Hooly smokes this is so uninspired. Rectangular room after rectangular room where a bunch of enemies keep spawning and you shoot them with a very limited supply of ammo for weapons that all do about the same thing. "Randomly generated" means "the rectangles get shuffled around" and "no level design to be seen". Maybe the bosses become a bit more fun, I'm not sure, but at the end of the day they're just bullet …

Fun game, but gets a negative for resetting the language/video options every single time I run it, and I did try setting them manually in config files and the like, to no avail. It's been like this for at least 5 years with no fix. (if you ever patch this, feel free to respond and I'll revise my rating)

Awesome roguelike FPS where you play as a wizard. Everything is random generated so prepare for surprise combat battle royal. Many different types of weapons, enemies, traps and other shenanigans. You will encounter many type of rooms some of them will have monsters, secret power ups or challenges. On each run power up your character selecting one of random skills available, with each level gain more useful …

For a cheap game that regularly goes on sale and was released at the beginning or even before the big "indie rogue-like" craze, it's pretty good. Movement and shooting feels good, like a Quake game if anything, maps, while basic are decent enough and maze-y. The aesthetic reminds me of one of those fake games you'd see someone playing in a movie or TV show, in a good way. It's just a really basic, barebones, …

I find myself with rather mixed feelings regarding Ziggurat. I somewhat feel it is a 6/10 game, one that does not offer enough mechanical, enemy, or map variety... As if it were a vertical slice proof of concept of a game. The gameplay that is there isn't bad, it is a decent loop that at first you'll be good with, but it feels like there should be a lot more. I would recommend the buy, but please not at full price.
Summarised from 34 of the 239 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 9, 2026. How summaries are made

neutral · AI labelView post →It's in theory a well done roguelike shooter but it never quite clicked with me and the levels are kinda annoying and samey and the enemies are a bother to fight... there's no real weight to the shooting and the feedback you get from hitting a baddy other than it ceasing to exist or not. Had a looooooot more fun with Immortal Redneck... so much that I basically beat it with all the classes... this one didn't hold my attention enough to even bother sticking through it for one clear. neutral · AI labelView post →Personally, I'm just not feeling it, unfortunately. There's a decent amount of variety in playable characters, although most of them are pretty similar ... A good selection of weapons, although there doesn't seem to be a lot of potential for switching out weapons mid-run ... The upgrades for levelling up during a run are abysmally boring, though. More health, more mana, quicker fire rate, that sort of stuff. Nothing that really screams "wow". And that's the general issue I have with the…

positive · AI labelView post →This is obviously a nice-looking game - The enemies behave in a smart and challenging way and the magic vibe to it all is neat. I just did not have a lot of fun with it. The shooting feels wonky and there is never a sense of improving when you earn treasure or power-ups since they often come at the cost of a steep debuff.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game just didn't age very well. Playing it now, 10 years after its release, is pretty much pointless. The rogue-lite formula has gone too far for it to be very enjoyable. It's repetetive, the cartoonish visual style felt quite disconnected from the whole Heretic/Hexen vibe the game's seemingly trying to pull off. Although the game still looks awesome and was clearly made with love and passion. I even enjoyed learnig about milkstone's previous projects from the secret rooms. I've been kinda…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a boring game where you play the same levels over and over with no progression system No meta progression, no skill building, no weapon building, each weapon and spell do almost the same damage from each branch. I'm not really sure why you want to keep playing this it has no progression to make it worth your while and upgrades and weapons feel weak. End boss has odd attack patterns that seem to do damage without even hitting you so your life just slowing drains until you die or it dies.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple and to the point, exactly what I wanted. No unnecessary bs, just moving around running or bunny hopping and shooting. Know your enemies, know their attack patterns, know your weapons, prioritize accordingly. Starts with 2 characters, but there are many more to unlock. Every one of them coming with unique features. Same goes for "game modes" and yes one of them is "Endless" mode! A lot of weapons, items and amulets to unlock. "Hard" difficulty is not unlocked by default, you have to beat…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- The music is very generic and annoying - The levels are super generic and don't allow for any sort of strategy. It's just boring rooms with boring layouts and annoying stairs. The scaling is off - It's not fun at all to shoot at the enemies. - The jumping sound is the same for every character and it sounds off - Spatial Sound is broken and buggy, sometimes sounds are very loud, sometimes they sound like they are far away. neutral · AI labelView post →Core roguelike issues of low power and low agency at the start of each run. Enemies are pretty similar, have too much health and numbers, and attack constantly. You tend to lack the mobility to deal with the bullet hell. Weapons are pretty samey and burn too much resources. The best strategy seems to be increasing drop rates, so you have the ammo and health to grind through any combat.

positive · AI labelView post →Maybe this is just a genre thing & unfair, but this game is really not very fun. It's much more of an arcade game than I was expecting. Pretty much all you do is walk into arenas that look identical to one another, use some pretty underwhelming combat to fight through them all, then you eventually die at some point and have to start over from scratch. It looks much more interesting than it actually is.

There are multiple classes to unlock, and like most of these kind of games, it can get pretty hard at times. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you liked games like Heretic and Hexen of yore this game plays very similar to those but instead of a linear progression through a fixed series of dungeons you get randomized dungeons, monsters, bosses, and even power ups and weapons. Sometimes you get good stuff and the run is a breeze. Sometimes you get shafted and die early. It's rogue-like so one death and its over, which I am not a huge fan of - but this game is entertaining enough that it's not a bother.

It follows the story of conquering the wizard's greatest rite of passage, the ever changing and titular Ziggurat.
