Developer Abstraction Games, WayForward
A Boy and His Blob is a puzzle-platform game developed by WayForward and published by Majesco. The game has a beautiful aesthetic in its art style, but unfortunately this comes at a severe cost to the gameplay itself. The lengthy animations not only slow down the gameplay, but cause immense frustration during those moments when the game demands quick reactions from the player, particularly during the boss battles. In addition, the AI pathfinding of the Blob leads to a lot of eye-rolling when it hops into pits …

It's the game with the "hug" button. ‘nough said. Melts my heart every time I hug the blob. First of all. yes. This game has a hug button and it's the most adorable thing ever. A Boy and His Blob is a charming puzzle platformer with a surprising amount of depth. It looks as though it's a children's cartoon, but I'm not sure if a young child could finish this game without help. Some of the puzzling aspects (particularly within the challenge levels) require a bit of thinking, precise timing, and well placed jumps. Gameplay mainly consists of feeding the friendly blob a variety of jelly beans …

I remember playing the original on NES when I was 8 or 9 and loved the game. While this is a reboot and not a remake the new developers have captured the magic of the original game. The graphics are beautiful and being able to hug blob is a nice touch. While it looks like a kids game, it’s not. Some of the puzzles get tricky and you’ll learn by dying (a lot). My only complaint is that the controls with the Xbox …

This Wii port is a 2009 remake of a particularly strange NES game designed by David Crane, the guy who made Pitfall. In both games, an evil tyrant king has taken over the planet of Blobolonia, and one of its citizens, a small white blob, crash-lands on Earth in search of help. He meets a random schoolboy who discovers that feeding jellybeans to the blob will give him various powers which, oddly enough,…

WayForward does a great job in making something grand for kids and their parents. store.steampowered.com/app/281200/A...
positive · AI labelView post →So I swiped A Boy and His Blob on the Nintendo eShop while it was still on sale. Still a solid and effortlessly charming puzzle game, though I noticed a few render/lighting issues in this port. Also crashed on me twice in the same level. I did get this amusing glitch during the second boss at least

positive · AI labelView post →I actually like the Game Boy version of A Boy and His Blob a bit better. It feels like he had a bit more time to refine the ideas and do things like include a few more puzzles and better area design. Rating: 🕹️👲
positive · AI labelView post →When @pixelturkey.com was playing A Boy and His Blob for the NES I had the thought of what would happen if you had BeanBoozled jellybeans. In the Game Boy game, The Rescue of Princess Blobette, the blob can knock you off cliffs. Very rude. #MARU #DANKART
neutral · AI labelView post →Random Game of the Day Day 79 - A Boy and His Blob A fun platform/puzzle game with probably one of the most unique mechanics. A blob that can transform into certain items based on what jellybeans you feed it. Absolutely adore this game, even though it can be frustrating and confusing at times
positive · AI labelView post →A Boy And His Blob was an amazing game if you were a clever curious kid with lots of patience and free time in 1989. And it helped if you didn't have an expectation of finishing a videogame, maybe didn't even know games had endings. I loved it. The remake by Wayforward is better in every way.

HOW DO I PROGRESS? WHY DON'T THE KETCHUP JELLY BEANS CHANGE THE BLOB'S FORM LIKE ALL THE OTHERS DO? HOW IS ANYONE SUPPOSED TO KNOW HOW TO ENTER THE CAVE? IT TOOK ME 2 YEARS TO REALIZE I COULD USE THE JELLY BEANS THAT TURN BLOB INTO A HOLE IN THE FLOOR TO GET INTO THE CAVE! WHY??? #ABoyAndHisBlob #NES #RetroGaming #80s #Nintendo #Gaming

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is rubbish. I so wanted to like it, but only 10 mins in, I found myself thinking, that I hoped it wasn't a long game. It has so much potential with the cute concept and sweet graphics. This game has some of the cutest little enemies I've ever seen, but sadly that's where the joy stops. There are so many annoying elements to this game. The constant calling on Blob with the same annoying sounds, Blob taking forever to appear and the long animations of Blob turning into things. I immediately fell in love with the hand drawn art work and got the game almost as soon as it released. I really want a sequel to this game
positive · AI labelView post →Uniquely for fans of the original. While the game is gorgeous both visually and aurally, the mechanics are clunky and did not age well. I don't feel like this game lives up to its legacy.

This is an adorable puzzle platformer and isn't too hard or obtuse for the most part, though Challenge Level 4-2 can cause troubles (Hint: the ladder goes down if the platform is above you and the cannon can blow up exploding enemies if they touch it right). It's not the best game ever or overly long at 40 regular levels and 40 challenge levels, but you get to hug the blob. You get to hug the blob. :3 BTW, the devs originally…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Deep down, I really, really love this game. It's one of my childhood games. It's adorable, the morphing blob concept is great, and some parts are really fun. But man... does it have some of the most annoying platforming I have ever experienced. If your position is off by a fraction of a pixel or your timing is a millisecond off, you will plunge into spike pits and get eaten by evil blobs over... and over.. and over. It does not help that the controls are not particularly responsive (at least,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only thing that really carries A Boy and his Blob is nostalgia+modern production values. So if you never played the original NES version, this will probably have a lot less value for you. It's almost endless puzzles back-to-back, so if you don't like puzzles, avoid it. Visually it's pretty polished and a lot of the puzzles are creative, but it gets seriously tedious, especially toward the end. You switch abilities and aim jellybeans over and over. At some points it's pretty difficult and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring, Bad controls and AI which makes it all frustrating, could have finished it 2 times as fast if it weren't for mistakes caused by slow AI of the blob or unresponsive controls. Also unskippable animations which slow the flow of the game immensely.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was a staple of my child hood, and I played it A LOT on the Wii. I'd say it's worth your time if you like obscure puzzle platformers with unique mechanics. But I do have to say that the boss of the second world is absolute bull. It's easier to beat the boss by cheesing it then actually fighting the damn thing properly.

Its execution was pretty frustrating, though, given that you didn't have direct control of the blob and sometimes needed to line it up pixel-perfect to complete a puzzle. Still neat tho.

But the sound periodically becomes a jumbled mess and at random it decides to not detect the controller anymore. And there's no setting to decrease music/SFX volume, just turn them on or off entirely. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a good concept, it's a 2D puzzle platformer with beautiful artwork and a cute little blob buddy that follows you around everywhere that you can manipulate using what I think are jellybeans in order to navigate throughout each level; you could turn your blob into a climbable ladder, or a trampoline to jump higher, or an anvil to crush certain structures/enemies, etc. You get a certain set of jellybeans--of which there are a good amount--for each level, and it's up to you to decide…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →yes, the graphics are cute. But the game is tediously slow to play for a puzzle platformer. Putting on the parachute almost put me to sleep. Can't recommend this one and had to idle to collect all 7 cards.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never could get into the NES version of A Boy and His Blob. But this new remake is a very nice remastered version of the original. It's got some good kiddy cartoon hand drawn graphics, great puzzle designs and level designs, and just a great attempt at making the old game feel new. This time around I was able to get into the game and enjoyed every moment. You meet a blob that can change into different shapes depending on what seed you feed it. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a slow, simplistic game with crappy controls and a tedious "call Blob" element. You walk across a level until you reach an obstacle. Using the clumsy rotating menu (it's not like there's dozens of keys on my keyboard) you pick the required power and blob becomes a ladder, parachute, portal, trampoline, etc. And then you have to stand still and call Blob using one of half a dozen lines they recorded for this. If you're particularly lucky you also have to drop him a bean so he can turn…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very positive is a generous rating for the game. Its slow paced, boring and the AI controlling the blob is just painfully bad. It would have been better if the Player could handle both. The art is ok, somewhat cute, but performs bad even on fullHD. I'm glad WayForward have found its genre in arcade styled games, like Shantae series.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute aesthetic and graphics but kinda simplistic and tedious. You constantly have be changing abilities, aiming projectile jellybeans and waiting for your blob companion to catch up to. Doesn't sound too bad but, combine it with the already slow pace of the game and the fact all the tedium is to only perform very simplistic actions to solve simplistic puzzles, the game just irritates and drives me away
