What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 56 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (64 of 72 positive).
Players praise the game's art, sound, and world design, calling it a fun and challenging Metroidvania. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the controls as stiff or slow, with input lag and missed button presses. [4][5][6] Many note the game launched on the same day as Silksong, hurting its player count. [7][8][9]

Its actually a decent metroidvania, but plagued with a lot of issues that make it not fun to play. The main issue most people will have is with how stiff the controls are to the point where I think there was an input buffer happening with any action button being pressed, i.e. pressing any action button locks you into that motion and you can't dash / move out of it so you gotta commit which just leads to tanking hits …

I bought this because I loved the demo and I respect the dev’s cojones in launching with that other game that released today. Awesome audio design, beautiful visuals, and fun gameplay. This one has a lot going for it.

Adventure of Samsara is a wonderful Metroidvania with a mysterious and bleak world. The plot is revealed at a reasonable pace, with just enough questions remaining unanswered to keep the player engaged in uncovering more about the story. Of note in most reviews is the idea of a "locked in" control scheme, where commands commit the player to an action fully -- you can't jump or dodge if you are attacking; this is …

This is a very good action platformer. The graphics are very nice - pixel art 8/16 bit style. Play is challenging - requires payin gattention to enemy behavior for timing attacks, blocks, etc.It feels good with regards to movement/traversal as well as combat. It has a very interesting back drop/world it is set in. Very much worth your time!

Beautiful pixelart and atmospheric score create an immersive retro-futuristic setting that is a joy to get lost in. Combat and platforming are fun. You will get used to the slower pace and the lack of animation canceling. Boss-fights later in the game are far too easy.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →> Atari released a similar game on the same day as Silksong (Adventure of Samsara) and it had only 12 concurrent players on Steam. Oops 😬
neutral · AI labelView post →After 100% the game, I wanted to add two things to this review. 1. The issues I had with the controllers in the beginning stopped bothering me not long after I left the first version of this review. It's old school, I was expecting more dynamism from a game that wants to be and feel old school. After getting used to it, it was pretty smooth and the combat was way better after unlocking upgrades. 2. Traversing the world was so much fun after unlocking all the upgrades. Adventuring through the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The biggest take away, is that IIex Games was brave enough to release their game on the same day as THE game of bugs that every other studio rolled out the red carpet for and delayed their own game releases for. If you know, you know. For that alone, I give them a pass. Despite only playing for half an hour, it was enough to understand what was going on: Interesting concept that builds on the original Adventure. Clunky movement/combat mechanism (still feels very early access…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Atari's decision to release its own Metroidvania game on the same day as Hollow Knight: Silksong appears to have hurt sales. Adventure of Samsara has only hit 12 concurrent players on Steam so far, despite having 100% positive reviews on the platform. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/atari-l...

I've been following it for a while, and to see how much it's grown from its early days to what it is now... it really shows how much heart and hard work the Ilex team put into Adventure of Samsara. This is the kind of Metroidvania I absolutely love. It just gets that perfect feeling of exploration and getting stronger. The world is huge and everything connects in such a cool way. That moment when you get a new power and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Adventure of Samsara back when it was still in development, and seeing the full release now is awesome. The amount of changes and improvements since then is huge! I’m not a hardcore metroidvania fan, but it still felt really fun and challenging. The first boss gave me a similar feeling as facing Margit in Elden Ring for the first time, since it really forces you to learn the core mechanics like parrying, dodging, and timing your attacks properly. Exploring feels really rewarding!…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adventure of Samsara - Atari's reimagining of the classic Adventure game - is a really cool, slick, modern pixel art metroidvania! It launched on the same day as Hollow Knight: Silksong - maybe give it some much-needed love? (Read more: VGC)
neutral · AI labelView post →Dropping a quick positive review for this game because it unfortunately got Silksonged. My playtime is low because I spent more time with the demo before release. Neat Metroidvania with some fun references to old 80s games. The movement does feel similar to the methodical movement from the original 80s Prince of Persia.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just too slow for me. Your character moves around at a snails pace. It's also a little clunky with needing to hold down a separate button to ledge grab. If you have more patience for these kind of problems then you might be able to enjoy this, they're my only real complaints, but big enough issues to make this unfun for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Created by the Brazilian based Ilex Games, Adventure of Samsara serves as reimagining of the classic Atari 2600 game Adventure. You know, the one with the duck dragons. But before it became what it is now, development started back as early as 2015 under its original title, Tower of Samsara
neutral · AI labelView post →I'm relatively early on in the game and haven't gotten all of my cool tools yet, i'm already loving the game even if i'm not the best at platformers. This game really harkons back to the days of old and has a strong visual and mechanical identity that I find a lot of games lacking in today's market, there's a sort of formula that even a good bit of indie games follow so while they're not as muddled down as mainstream they still all end up visually looking similar or feeling similar. Samsara…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves a lot more attention than it is getting. Fantastic Vania platformer with just a splash of Souls vibes but thoroughly it's own thing... ALSO ADVENTURE IS BACK. God bless Atari for helping this game live. Hope this gets more recognition.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've finished the game, and revisiting areas for secrets, I'm playing on legion go, a little buggy, game stutters whenever I use the orb or every time there was a flying enemy nearby, but I believe devs recently fixed this.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had the misfortune of releasing on the same day that Silksong did. But I have yet to finish the first Hollow Knight, and have been a fan of Atari's Adventure for a long time so I bought this instead. It's a little clunky at times, and has minimal connection to Adventure, but is otherwise a very enjoyable experience. 100% in a little over 14 and a half hours, 10/10!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just rolled credits on the game and its really good for a Search Action (Metroidvania). The world is very well designed, but the upgrades to traverse take a little long to get. Though, by the end of the game, I felt like a powerhouse, which is exactly what I want from this experience! Great game, definitely give it a try!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only 12 people played Adventure of Samsara concurrently on the day of release.. Only 12 people played Adventure of Samsara concurrently on the day of release. It’s too bad. It was a good game. Almost like Prince of Persia meets Metroid. But it was madness to release this during the same day as Silksong. Madness, I tell you. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/atari-launched-its-own-metroidvania-on-the-same-day-as-silksong-but-its-only-hit-12-concurrent-players-on-steam/…
positive · AI labelView post →The vibe of this game is really interesting. The more I played, the more I started to get the pacing and design choices. Honestly, what first got me here was the cover art.. but when I saw the minimalist style I wasn’t sure if I’d actually buy it. Glad I took the leap, because the art combined with the sound design creates an immersion that’s pretty intriguing and not something you see often in games. The puzzles don’t just hand you the answers, which leaves a lot of room for experimenting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Parrying feels super dope once you get it and the game is all around really fun so far in the first few sections
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun and challenging metroidvania! Love the artstyle and world design, definitely play this is this is your jam!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's a really good skyrimvania, nice artwork, good sound design, and the levels are pretty intricate. Absolutely worth the 20 bucks if you like these sorts of games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm loving it. Very fun and nostalgic. Brings back memories of the 80s.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Downloaded the Demo and decided to give it a shot. Just finished the story and even though I still have a few things to find to 100% the game (while i will go back and find), I've completely enjoyed it - a really fun game, challenging but not too difficult, and very atmospheric. A few of the reviews have criticised how slow you move in the game, and while that is true at the start, you definitely get more mobile as the game progresses. Also big props to the devs who helped fix a bug that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoying this one so far, picked this one up without much expectations though was honestly surprised on how well this one is put together; it's clear a lot of time and effort was put into this one. The gameplay is pretty solid and forgiving though by no means easy, the visuals while simple work for the world it's in and found myself more invested then i thought I would be. Action in this one is a bit slower paced compared to other games in this genera, it's by not means a fast paced game;…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just played a bunch of this Adventure Of Samsara on stream there and it was real good, a shame it is getting lost in the post-Silksong shuffle right now. The little hints I'm seeing of how it is linked to ancient Atari 2600 game 'Adventure' have got me on the hook.
positive · AI labelView post →I would love to play this game, but the input is stuck to either downward arrow or upward arrow. I tried disconnecting every USB device on my PC, disabling touchpad, etc. But this game still doesn't want to work. Quite sad, it seems much more up my alley, unlike the other game about bugs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After more than a decade of development, Adventure of Samsara finally releases on September 4th, 2025...the same day as Hollow Knight: Silksong. Poor game never stood a chance.

neutral · AI labelView post →Indie Showcase: Adventure of Samsara This indie game is a fantastic metroidvania callback to older times, but Atari was absolutely the wrong publisher to go with. I really hope they can find some sort of fan footing, because i'd really love to see more out of this developer. #indiegames
positive · AI labelView post →A good talk with Atari about the choice to invest more in a game that was completely incapacitated by Silksong. Instead of taking the L, Atari worked with Brazilian studio Ilex Games to deepen Adventure of Samsara and "relaunch." www.polygon.com/adventure-of...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice, straight forward, classic, not difficult Metroidvania.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's got a decent story, has some unique mechanics, but it is a little bit clunky that'll get you a couple times. Outside of that, beautiful looking game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game with gorgeous graphics. I like the art style of the game. The dragon that randomly appears in different areas was annoying and I had an intense experience whenever I vanquished it temporarily. Otherwise the bosses and enemies were a joy to destroy. I like how there is green blood from the bugs with pickaxes when they are destroyed. It is really a fun game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing Adventure of Samsara for about three hours now and I'm really enjoying my time with it so far. The art design and overall atmosphere are excellent and the slower, more methodical approach to combat is a refreshing change. It's a tough game, but a rewarding one if you stick with it.

Adventure of Samsara dropped today on Steam, GOG, and consoles—and right away, it’s stirring the pot. You play as the Solar Champion, a long-dead Plutonian resurrected by the Sun to set the multiverse back in order. Which, in practice, means exploring labyrinthine castles and frozen wastes, hacking down the undead, picking up hidden augments, and slowly becoming an unstoppable force. It’s…

ADVENTURE of SAMSARA by @atari.com and Ilex Games It's a 2D Metroidvania action-adventure that mixes good platforming with souls-like battles and classic pixel-art. Genre: Metroidvania. Release Date: Coming soon. DEMO SCORE - 6,5/10.
neutral · AI labelView post →"Adventure of Samsara" just announced by @atari.com as a follow-up to 1980's 2600 Adventure. But where's the Adventure in this game?
neutral · AI labelView post →Dreadful experience. Primarily due to really poor control inputs. The game looks fine, but really tries to pretend it is old and controls are laggy... which was a bug in the old days, not a feature. The worst offender is that button presses are missed about every 1 in 4 or 5 times. Just input not registered. But even that aside, the really strange lag between an input and the action on screen is unpleasant. Add to that strange decisions like making RT a dash key while also making it a "hold"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been playing on the side 2 different Metroidvania-esque games on Switch that came out last year, neither of which is Silksong: Shadow Labyrinth & Adventure of Samsara, the latter of which came out on the literal same exact day as Silksong. Both are really interesting, but Samsara is the better game
positive · AI labelView post →I think the Devs were trying to give movement a "deliberate" feel, and it does have that but also feels clunky. This may turn some people away, but if you are able to get past the clunk there is a serviceable MV here. Nice atmosphere, but the story seems like something thrown together as an afterthought.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →glad to be here.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a tough one for me to review. So much potential here that it hurts to think of what this game could've been with a little more polish. As-is, I can still recommend this flawed beauty of a game, but with several caveats. First the things that worked: Absolutely stunning pixel art and enemy sprite design. This makes the world a real wonder to explore. Coupled with an awesome synthy soundtrack (crank the music volume to 100 btw, it's set to like 60 by default for some reason), and you've…

neutral · AI labelView post →Fun little game that fulfilled my metrodvania craving after playing Silksong. Beautiful mysterious pixelated-art world Movements are a little clunky, but you get used to it and adds to the oldchool charm. I enjoyed the world design, exploring the map and finding all secrets. The more upgrade you find the easier it is to navigate the world. Bosses have good design and ideas, but are mostly very easy. The only difficulty comes from the clunkiness trying to avoid attacks. The last few bosses were…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game feels like Out of This World and Prince of Persia mixed together to form a great metroidvania! The game definitely has trade offs; clunky jump/hanging from bars but no damage from projectiles sometimes when finishing climbing animation. So you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have Adventure of Samsara! Seriously, if you're looking for a fun, challenging metroidvania that doesn't break the bank and will give you hours of fun, this is the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →awesome game! the mystery draws you into a different world that meshes scifi and fantasy pretty well. its more casual then it looks, very nice game to load up when your done for the day. my only gripe is i wish the enemy animations were a tad bit smoother, but maybe thats on purpose to capture the retro feel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An awesome game with a really beautiful art. I enjoyed every moment that I played it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am genuinely baffled how this has 90% positive reviews. Obviously anything launching the same day as Silksong was going to struggle but this was truly sent out to die. Even after the 2.0 rebalancing movement is slow and stiff, attacks are heavily committal to the point they can only be used simon-says in the overly telegraphed windows given to you, platforming is inconsistent, and overall the second to second gameplay just isn't fun. More and more it seems like "soulslike" is akin to…
