Some players find the game disappointing compared to Oxenfree, citing shallow writing and predictable dialogue. [1][2][3] Others praise the art style, voice acting, and humor, calling it a fun story-driven experience. [4][5][6] Several reviewers report game-breaking bugs and repetitive dialogue that hinder replayability. [7][8][9]

Loved the vibe, characters, and art. Did not jive with the storytelling or theme at all. Lacks a bit of interesting narrative compulsion or draw that a game like this (which is essentially 90% a walking narrative) really needs. Loved the drunken actors. I feel like everything with this game is absolutely on point except the writing.... but that's the only thing they actually had to nail. What a disappointing misfire …

Coming from Oxenfree this was a bit of a disappointment, as someone who loves this genre and other dialogue heavy games, I was beyond excited for this release. Right from the main menu, I was hooked the art style, the sound design, everything felt spot on. The intro did a great job setting the mood and showing the game’s potential, introducing some well voiced characters and simple but interesting mechanics. …

I played it for Play or Pay 3rd Cycle of 2025 and it was picked for me by JK. Afterparty is one of those games that hooked me instantly just from the premise alone — you’re Milo and Lola, two best friends who suddenly die and end up in Hell. But here’s the twist: you can actually escape if you manage to outdrink Satan himself. That’s the entire setup, and honestly, it’s just as wild and hilarious as it sounds. From …

This game is more of a visual novel than an adventure game. I played it after Oxenfree, so I knew what I was getting into and hoped it would be just as good... and it is even better. The underworld theme really worked well for them. Excellent voiced dialogue, with lots of jokes and puns. I enjoyed every minute of it and you should too.

59% of the 191 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Afterparty. The complaint that keeps coming up: shallow writing and predictable dialogue. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received "generally favourable reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 63% of critics. PC Gamer said, "I had high expectations for Afterparty. I was expecting a comedy title, set in a fantasy world that could have been from a Noel Fielding sketch. But the very real relationship between Lola and Milo, the witty humour that had me chuckling every minute and the audacity on show from Night School Studio to go where they did, at the risk of their player's discomfort, made Afterparty even more than I thought it could be." IGN said, "Night School has crafted an…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Minor nitpick, you kind of learn to ignore the NPCs the game gives you a chance to talk to after a bit. Conversations only ever go one way: they'll be rude to you, or they'll talk about doing something spooky, like eating people or whatever. It's set dressing, which is fine, but when you're the protagonists in the situation you're in, you can't really come up with a reason to invite yourself into that kind of social interaction. Just kinda wastes your time. What this review is actually…

neutral · AI labelView post →Although the subject matter and setting are ripe with potential, the humor ultimately killed any desire I had to play the game. I had a very hard time following dialogue, because characters would frequently interject their own sarcastic opinions, non-sequiturs, and philosophies. It was very distracting. It is possible that one may like this kind of humor, but I did not. It was almost entirely referential and obscure. There was one reference to a district attorney who died several decades ago.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you'd like to play this because of Oxenfree, keep in mind you'll not find the same quality. The hook at the beginning is interesting, but after that... It feels unfinished and dead. It's also quite buggy. Most of the time you'll just be walking around in complete silence, other times while the characters are having a conversation about the main story, they will skip the whole dialogue because interrupted by something else... It's full of little things like that and quite a mess.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While its setting and characters give life to Hell in an unexpected and beautiful way, the game gets crushed under the ambition of its unique story, never really taking off and playing it too safe. The voice acting is stellar though. Unlike Oxenfree's thought-provoking dialogue and thriller-esque mystique, Afterparty seems more like an afterthought in the story games by Night School Studio.

positive · AI labelView post →Man, this was a hard one to get through. Almost every character is insufferable and entire personality is just stating mundane/nothing statements over and over again. "Wow did that just, that--that was a thing that, uh, happened, yeah, wow, it happened wow, yeah..." type sh**. It's like if Forespoken's dialogue was a game and only just that. No personality. Nothing interesting ever happens. All the character's conflicts keep building up until 10 minutes before the game ends and then it's all…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting story and much nicer graphics than Oxenfree but after two hours I faced a game breaking bug which basically got me stuck. Off course i'm unable to re-load since there is only one save. I'm not willing to replay those 2 hours and go through the same dialogue again since it's not skippable. I'm reading there are many bugs in the game so i'll give this a pass. I see that it is a 2020 release and it's weird that they haven't addressed the bugs 5 years later. Better avoid this until they…

neutral · AI labelView post →The story in Afterparty is decent, and the voice acting and dialogues are really good, but you can’t skip them. With three different endings to get, you are forced to sit through the same conversations again. Getting them all in a single playthrough is impossible because of the autosave feature. This makes the game feel much longer than it should be.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is cool and you get multiple endings based on your choices. But don't expect too much gameplay. You basically walk from place to place and select dialogue options. Get it on sale
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted a fun lighthearted game drinking with the devil in hell. Instead I am stuck with the two most boring stuck up dorks in gaming history and have to listen to their unskipable cringeworthy banter. Only thing worse is the demon that is supposed to torment them and fails miserably. I hope when I finish this I get to see them burn. Only reason to continue playing honestly. I want the worst for them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is no Oxenfree, but as a short story-based game without that level of expectation it is fine. The high points are the voice acting and art style. Writing is hit and miss. It's sometimes funny, but it does suffer from being too Whedonesque; when almost everyone is constantly trying to be witty/snarky the impact is lost, and characters lack their own distinctive voice. The narrative also feels too obviously on rails; by the late stage of the game I didn't care too much about a choice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When aesthetics are more important than gameplay, it is pretty with great music and some humor, but It is just a walking simulator with some underused mini-games. Drinking doesn't matter, speaking doesn't matter. It only matters if you choose Lola or Milo. That's it. It was disapointing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game Breaking bug, cant progress, no dev support, I leave bad review
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art and voice acting is good. There is virtually no gameplay, no exploration, super linear visual novel feel to the game. The writing feels as though the author just learned what swears are and thinks throwing them in non-stop somehow makes things more edgy. The writing gets a bit better after 1.5 hours- but as someone who likes exploring, world building, and secrets found through going the "wrong way" this is 100% not my type of game. If you like want a book that feels like an edgy 15…

neutral · AI labelView post →Only a few minigames are available throughout the entire game. The gameplay mechanic involving alcohol is a good idea, but it only proves useful in a few situations and does not significantly alter dialogues in other cases. The first half of the game is too boring and will only appeal to those who enjoy toilet humor, as there is quite a lot of it. The only truly good aspect of this game is the ending—it is genuinely interesting and may have even touched my emotions, giving me something to think…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is not Night School's best work. The story falls a bit short and the game itself feels unfinished. There are too many long dragged out sections and the experience feels unpolished. While the concept of drinking to unlock another dialogue choice is interesting, it still feels like they wasted a lot of potential.

The idea that hell is one big sticky frat party will resonate with a lot of gamers. It sure resonated with me. The writing is energetic, too. Lola and Milo’s different flavors of anxiety come out well, and the cast in general are endearing. Banter is witty and constant. The ending feels a little forced—just as the plot was starting to zoom in on the protagonists and get a…

Worth a shot for the sale price. Can't give a neutral review; hence negative. If you're not familiar with Night School Studio's previous entry it's a walking sim (/pos) with some story and simple puzzles thrown in. It was an enjoyable experience that was written well enough to keep me engaged. I honestly can't give a deeper summary than that without revisiting…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I might had too high expectations with this one.. I was expecting for a adventure game, but got a feeling that this is more of a visual novel style of game. You just move slowly and talk to random NPC:s and select a response which maybe affects the story. Where are all the puzzles etc, haven't seen any in first 2 hours. So it's just endless clicking and endless conversations. The premises and story do have a potential, but I don't feel there is enough gameplay in this. UPDATE: After 2.5 hours…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It always saddens me to put the thumb down on a game, but I cannot get past a specific section in the game where Satan and his friends get stuck on a wall. This really just killed the game for me, no I'm not going to start over. Apparently it's not maintained either so I cannot recommend this game at all
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Night School Studio, but this game is so hollow. A basic journey stretched out by a dozen fetch quests in the final act. An 8 hour game that could've been 2. If not for the writing, I would've given up sooner. Night School Studio is fantastic, but this just wasn't what I wanted after discovering just how amazing Oxenfree is.

neutral · AI labelView post →Honestly I enjoyed the game. Was surprised when I checked the store page for it to have a mixed rating. There's some clever jokes strewn around the dialogues which hit all the right notes for me. I thought all characters were loveable in their own way, with their imperfections and all that. I do agree that the nervous/nonconfident stammering is a bit overdone here and there, but overall it was a short and sweet experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have never posted a review but I have to with this one as this is the MOST INFURIATING GAME I have ever played. Every character takes 5 minutes to say something that normally takes 10 seconds and it's all UNSKIPPABLE. Drove me out of my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mind. The visuals and sound mixing are beautiful but that's it for the positives. I know it takes place in hell but it feels like every character is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and unrelatable and swearing is funny?
