What makes for a great FMV, you would ask? Good Acting? A well established and smoothly transitioned story? Decently built characters? The right ambiance and environment especially for horror ones? None of that checks up with this game, I am afraid.. At best, it is below average for all the elements mentioned above and I can not possibly recommend it.

Night Book seems interesting at first storywise, has alright ideas and basically two different story which gets to the same node of endings which is refreshing to see from the current era of FMV games. Also, controlling the game pretty straight forward as you only going to need the mouse. The problem is there is not enough tension for me to feel involved in the story or care too much what is happening in the game …

Night Book is an interactive horror story about an interpreter who speaks a rare language that is said to invoke the supernatural. 7/10 Night Book is an engaging FMV thriller that mixes remote work, folklore, and horror into a story about an ancient curse and possession. It’s set entirely in a claustrophobic apartment and told through video calls and webcam footage, where you play as Loralyn — an online interpreter who cares for her unstable father while working remotely. Pandemic creativity with a definite 2020 vibe. More fascinating than frightening This is a curious time capsule born straight out of lockdown creativity. A FMV where actors never physically interact and only exist through webcams and screens, which is honestly clever given the context. You follow a translator tangled in occult translation business, lots of ominous calls, hidden secrets, and very familiar horror beats. It’s cliché-heavy, but I’ll admit the premise pulled me in more than…

The game is so bad that it's good. I refuse to believe the script wasn't written by an 8 year old. Acting is equal as amateuresque. To the developer's credit, I watched the FMV from start to finish and didn't even realize that it was already over so I clearly enjoyed it in a weird way.

No major spoilers in this review This is a thriller/horror FMV about a pregnant french translator doing night shifts while her husband is abroad. He is preparing for a major building project on a small island we know as Le Pauce. They want to build a luxury resort there with scuba diving and some highrise hotel or something. Our main protagonist is the translator, Loralyn, who like I mentioned, works night shifts from home translating between English and French. She however also speaks a rare…

I tend to enjoy most FMV games even though they're usually on the awful side. I consider Late Shift to be the best of the bunch, and Night Book is far from that type of quality. The main character does a decent job with what she has to work with, and so does some of the other cast, but the game isn't very interesting. I'm sure I'll play through it again to see alternate endings, but the pace of the game is so slow that I don't think I'll be doing it anytime soon. I bought this for $5, and…

Did I enjoy Night Book? Yes. Is it a "good" game? Not really. I think that biggest issue for me was the pacing, the game may have benefited more from a slower and longer pace, allowing the players to uncover more lore and information as the time goes by and more scarier things happen to the main character. Night Book has a fair bit of replayability due to the choice tree and dialogue options available to the player, though many of the choices give you very similar outcomes. Replaying the game…

The FMV format is a double-edged sword; it offers a sense of immediacy but also reveals the limitations of the medium. Stiff performances and predictable dialogue undermine any potential atmosphere. The horror elements are more akin to a haunted house attraction than a genuinely frightening experience. Cheap jump scares substitute for genuine suspense, and the narrative lacks any real depth or originality. The illusion of choice offered by the interactive elements is shattered by the limited…

While the story is interesting, it's unfortunately rather short at just under an hour and only a bit over 40 decisions to make for an ending, and despite the 15 different endings, there's only a bit over 200 scenes to see and several of the endings seem very similar with not always enough variety in achieving them. It does a decent job at conveying a creepy atmosphere, but the overall presentation is weakened by often using text messaging and the claustrophobic view through security camera…

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 108: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆ (6/10) Night Book is a short-form FMV horror game where you play as Loralyn, a pregnant online interpreter working late into the night. It could have been good, but it isn't. Compared to the FMV games I've played so far, this is the weakest one yet. It's a shame that so much potential has been wasted, because the idea is pretty good—and by idea, I mean the webcam scenario as an “observer.” The plot itself is terrible—if you're going to curse, do it right. Everything seems very unnatural and unbelievable. The main actress isn't bad, but the others are annoying. Really annoying. Especially the husband or this Max guy. It…

Not in the same league as The Bunker. Night Book is ok if in a bundle or deep sale. I acquired it through the fanatical FMV bundle. I have played through twice and deleted not caring enough to get all the endings. You can skip scenes on replay but can't fastforward chat messages. This is one of the worse FMV choose your own adventure games. It's still better than Mia and the Dragon Princess, but that isn't saying much. The horror elements, plot, and characters are very weak. Likely due to lockdowns at the time of creation, you never see two characters in the same room, which weakens their ability to play off each other. Also, not a fan of the way it records stats. While I love FMV games in general, they key point here is that this isn't a FMV "game" but rather a semi-interactive movie. It takes place via a computer interface and yet we can't use the computer at all, figure anything out or make decisions. All conclusions and major actions are pre-determined in the script. It's a great idea for a FMV but it lacks user control. If this was like "her story" as an interface, with this plot, it would be great... but at $3, even at that price, I just can't…

To be clear, this is NOT a game. This is more an interactive short movie. You get a few options that lead to different endings. It's worth it when it's on sale (like 2-3€) but not really at full price seeing as you complete the game in one hour and the idea is to replay it for the multiple endings. It's well made for what it is at least.

Another tedious "watch the same transition scene with a minor variation 100x" simulator by good old Wales Interactive. Honestly sometimes I don't know why I bother playing these. I guess because sometimes my kids wander in and see somebody spazzing out on the screen and they make fun of it. In this one, that was by far the most entertaining aspect. This one wasn't even edited well; sometimes one scene doesn't make any sense path-wise from the preceding one.

It's almost got a decent found footage vibe going for it, but thew geography of the apartment is never really made clear and it's full of awkward pauses anytime there's a choice to be made so half of the dialogue feels super unnatural. I played it a second time just to test out some other choices, and as expected it all plays out pretty much the same.

More coherent and atmospheric than many other entries in the FMV genre. The acting is pretty decent, too. Only occasionally blemished by cop-out writing decisions where the authors decided that in order for the desired outcome to happen a character needs to do something that they know would be stupid and dangerous. But disaster needs to strike, so let's have em do the thing. You can tell that they were forced to shoot each actor separately. Sometimes that makes for awkward moments. Not once…

Some parts of the story don't transition too well, but it's interesting nonetheless. I also really like our main actress' performance! If you're looking for good modern examples of FMV games, try The Shape Shifting Detective, Late Shift, The Complex, or the Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker. Dude, this game is not for everyone. it's a bit soapy and this storyline might scare you or seem childish and not interesting at all. Evil spirits? Grandfather? Cursed island? Loralyn is all about her. I feel really sorry for her and worry about her the whole time. But the husband plays the worst. or rather, he annoys me. maybe he has such a role and he achieved his goal, but he is the anti-hero for me here. I like a good ending. Don't play to see a bad one.

Then she reads some cursed book by accident and all sorts of demons start comin' out! The main lass does a decent job actin', but the rest of 'em are proper rubbish, especially the dad…
