What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 189 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (1,091 of 1,444 positive).
Players praise the story, voice acting, and art style, but many find the mind map deduction system clunky and the walking speed too slow. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers criticize the lack of manual saves, unskippable cutscenes, and missable achievements. [5][6][7][8] A few posters feel the game misrepresents Hercule Poirot's character. [9][10]

So many unforgivable sins in this game. Sin 1-unskippable cutscenes. Sin 2-no manual saves, only autosaves. If you mess up, you have to start the whole game over again Sin 3-missable evidence and deductions. If you're going to make it so you can't manually save a game, don't make anything missable. Sin 4-it is impossible to complete the game without a guide, being that you have to start the whole game over again if …

I really wanted to like this game! I'm a fan of Agatha Christie, and mystery games in general. However: Cons: - I have a reasonably high tolerance for 'walking simulator' type games. But.. the walking speed is so insanely slow that I almost didn't finish the game. Especially in some of the levels where you are encouraged to explore, you have to loop back and forth between rooms and cover a large area of ground. This …

Point and click story game about one of the most famous detective Hercule Poirot ...the game is very beautiful and very well made....somehow i got a bit used to this since point and click since i played i played ABC Murders but still a no but despite this i still enjoyed the story and loved to solve these cases. My partner and I just finished playing through the game, we very much enjoyed the cosy experience it gave and were surprised how good the story actually was. The voice acting is excellent (and I'm annoyingly picky) especially the man himself who sounds spot on as a young Poirot. It's also mostly voiced, which is very impressive for such a game. The only things not voiced are general letters you find and Poirot's …

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 26: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/10 If you’re here for a proper whodunit, you’re in for a treat. Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot: The First Cases is quietly compelling, driven by solid writing, sharp character dynamics, and—shockingly—a pointed commentary on classism that adds real bite to the mystery. It’s not a flashy game, but it doesn’t need to be. It knows exactly …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Come, my little gray cells.... What utter bollocks. First and foremost, I consider this game to be an insult to Agatha Christie and her character of Hercule Poirot. He is poorly captured here. Gone is the highly confident, amusingly pompous, and endearingly peacocking Poirot. This Poirot seems more hen-pecked and insecure. His grand statements regarding his own competence seem to come from a desperation to prove himself and be accepted rather than a true arrogance. While the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is all over the place... It drags on for so long, with such a confusing story that keeps on adding more and more intrigues and details, everyone is somewhat guilty for one thing or another and you just keep on talking to the same people again and again before finally coming to a conclusion after 10 hours. The ending is just not satisfying, almost all characters are very unlikable and the solution is dragged on endlessly. There are many cutscenes in this game that you cannot skip and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that should get a neutral rating. I give it a 'thumbs up' because most of the writing and the presentation are decent. The gameplay feels cluncky and the way the 'mind maps' are used is not great. Often you can guess the 'deductions' based on the layout of the mind map. It's by no means a bad game, but it is quite short and only the way that the game forces you to switch between mind-mapping and talking to people it gains some length. If it is on a sale and you have…

He is invited to a large family event in a big mansion, but a murder happens and a snowstorm traps everyone inside. This means no one can leave, so Poirot has to solve the case right there. During the game, you explore different rooms in the mansion, talk to characters, and collect clues. Little by little, you learn about the wealthy Van den Bosch family and the people around them. There are many secrets, and you…

positive · AI labelView post →(SPOILER! )The game is fine the mechanism is a bit tedious but ok. However Poirot was not a law and order guy, he was a people person and would have handled a lot the situations very differently, with manners or so to speak. Also he would not condemned a case of justified self defense like it was some bad thing. He is always graceful and cares about true justice. I dislike how this story makes him out to be some ordinary police who goes around shouting 'the law the law'.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sights & Sounds Hamburgled Hercule Poirot! L'inspecteur extraordinaire hailing from Belgium with his twirly moustache and intuition-based deductions. Being a literary character, you've probably only seen him films portrayed by the likes of Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov, or Kenneth Branagh or on television as played by David Suchet or John Malkovich. Or perhaps that one episode of Muppets Tonight in the 90's where he's played by Jason Alexander while Seinfeld was still at its peak of popularity…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An incredibly tedious slog: 1. a snail's pace complete with a long delay for every single action 2. a ridiculous amount of unskippable cutscenes (this includes the "collectables") 3. no chapter select (which means that going back for missable (and time-gated) achievements means that you have to replay the entire dragfest 4. an incredibly clunky UI (moving with WASD means forcing the cursor to stay in the middle of the screen, so you're not able to actually browse the scene while walking, and…

However, like others mentioned the actual deduction aspect is clunky, and just not fun... for me, unless a game hits all marks, i cant justify spending time
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked up this game because I generally like Microids games and love a good mystery and Agatha's work. Overall, it's a solid title but only if you enjoy JUST simple adventure game. The story puts you in the shoes of a young Hercule Poirot. He gets invited to a lavish, remote mansion for an engagement party with the wealthy Van den Bosch family. A sudden snowstorm traps everyone inside, someone gets murdered, and you have to dig through everyone's dark secrets to catch the killer. From there,…

neutral · AI labelView post →the game is monotonous and the gameplay is constantly the same, quite boring unfortunately. The most frustrating part though, is connecting the clues in the mind map. Nearly half of the combinations make absolutely no sense and leave you frustrated because there is no objective way to know two seemingly random and completely different points are connected.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dumb logic connections, forced to watch long cutscenes that just replay the information I theoretically had to deduce. Forced to walk around scenes back and forth. Nice visuals. No subtitles (that I could find)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is poorly executed. I wanted so much to play an investigative game with good story and puzzles. There is a case board where you match clues together to try and figure out the story as you play it. Most of the connections are obvious and a waste of time. It stops gameplay every time you find a "clue" to connect the clues on the case board. You can't do anything else or find any more clues until you've "solved" the case board every 5 minutes. What made me quit this game was an entire…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →HP: The First Cases is an admirable little detective game. Made by Scottish Indie developers, this small project may be very simple yet quite charming. To summarize, the story and conversations are done like a visual novel while the gameplay is a isometric walking simulator. The slow movement and basic point & click system both keep the game grounded and humble, for better or worse. What saves the game is the SUPERB voice acting and intriguing detective mystery! The animations are decent…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly easy and predictable, unchallenging and completely linear. Unskippable automatic convos. Misleading title as there is really only 1 major case with something on the side, not counting the prologue. No variety of any kind to be had, no cleverness to show. You almost cannot fail. Just a timewaster really.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game for about 8 hours in 2023, but it frustrated me too much to continue. I came back determined to finish it and, to be honest, I should have just left it alone. There are parts of this I quite enjoyed. The characters are interesting and the voice acting is well done. Large parts of the plot are intriguing and engaging, though the ending wasn't the sort I generally enjoy. The problem with this game was, unfortunately, the gameplay. Like many detective games, this uses a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While it has some charm, I can't in good conscience recommend a game that hates the player. This is at it's core an adventure game where you slowly explore scenes for triggerpoints to make observations, but the game loves to only activate these triggers after certain actions are performed. While this makes perfect sense from a storytelling point of view, it's very infuriating when something you've written off as visual fluff suddenly becomes the bottleneck for progress. This should have been…

It was said that Christie killed off Poirot, with whom she had a love-hate relationship, in Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case to prevent other writers from using the character. Little did she know then that the Belgian detective would be the star of multiple video games! The story of The First Cases is an original creation…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot: The First Cases, developed by Blazing Griffin and published by Microids, offers players a chance to dive into the early days of one of literature’s most iconic detectives. The game is set during the 1920s and centers around a snowbound manor where a high-society engagement party turns deadly, forcing a young Hercule Poirot to apply his legendary deductive skills to unravel a complex murder mystery. This title takes an original narrative approach, crafting a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game structure is pretty strange - even if you make the correct deductions on your own, you can't progress without connecting exactly the right dots, and they are not always well-differentiated. Furthermore, and in all fairness this is part of Agatha Christie's writing too, some of the "deductions" are in fact logical leaps that could have other plausible explanations. All this to say that it's weird to bill something as a logic game (and have Poirot giving you lectures about logic) when…

neutral · AI labelView post →A great time exploring, deducing and connecting dots. If you like a more slow-paced investigation game that requires you to use your noggin a little, this is for you. If you require a quicker pace or some action, you may want to skip this one because even though it is short enough it will require your patience sometimes. For me personally, it was just the game I was looking for right now.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are good and I love anything Poirot, but they made the game very simple concept - constant grey cells connections that gets so old and tiring very soon. After you connect the "connections", then you have to talk to the same characters, then you have to connect in the brain again, talk, connect, talk. Unfortunately tedious.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked some twists in the story but the story itself was generally not interesting and not well mended. The mechanic of connecting ideas was interesting but it was more like connecting them so you could justify what you already guessed. It would be more interesting if the connection of the ideas gave you more information to come closer to the culprit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not nearly as good as the ABC murders game, too many not obvious tedious deductions need to be made to progress the story so even if you know what to do you have to struggle with linking what nodes the developer decided needed to be on a very large mind map and these are sometimes not obvious, the deduction system in the previous game was much better and more focused. They skimped on the character art as during different scenes in varied locations the characters never change clothes or look…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game forges a strong identity with its mental map puzzles, where you have to make connections between evidence to solve different questions. The story is captivating and the design and art is beautiful. One of the coziest detective games I've ever played. The only complaint I can make is that the game can be slow at times. Poirot walks with a purpose, but not with urgency. In other words, best you get is a fast walk. Poirot also feels the need to squat, turn, lean into, or ponder on…

It did contain a lot of dialogue between Poirot and the characters which did become tedious at times The mind maps where the clues, evidence and information gathered are combined was interesting and different to me although some of the connections made were too large a leap in logic for me while others so obvious that I overlooked them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are REALLY feeling the detective game itch, and it's wintertime and you feel like curling up with a cup of tea for a cozy evening, it's decently entertaining, provided you buy it at a deep discount. On the whole, however, this game is extremely mid. The writing is very bad, down to the level of words being used with the wrong meanings and sentences being phrased so confusingly that you have to mentally untangle what the writer was even trying to say. Some of the art is charming…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played it one time and didn’t get my achievement for “Work-Life Balance.” I inspected everything in the room, but the achievement still wasn’t unlocked. Then I played the game a second time really fast (skipping the monologues), searched for solutions online, followed them, and it still didn’t unlock. I wrote to the publisher, and they answered: “…our team support is unable to unlock the trophy…”. So now I have a game that is unfinished and no help at all. Now to the game itself: it’s bad.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a decent game overall. I do like CSI/detective like games but the game could do with a few quality of life improvements: - Can't replay a chapter - if you miss something for an achievement you have to replay the whole game. - No skipable cupscenes. Sometimes the characters go off on a rant/tirade, if you have to replay the game, unfortunately you have to listen to it all again. There is no quickening/skipping. - The game will want you to investigate certain normal Household objects…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're looking for an intelligent, puzzle-based murder mystery point-&-click adventure game THIS AIN'T IT. This is barely a sliver above those hidden-object 'mystery' games for mobile phones and there's an air of cheapness that pervades the entire game. The characters are all represented by flat, still images, some of which are literally just traced-over stock photos of celebrities. No brain power is required at any point and the entire game could literally be brute-forced by a slightly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like a nice point and click mystery/puzzle, but this was not it. This is like they took a Poirot movie and then made it so you have to click to get through each bit of character speech. There are no choices to be made, any puzzles to be solved, any deductions to be made actually by the player. If you imagine a chess game where you're only allowed to move one piece at a time into one position, and not allowed to click any thing or anywhere else, then you've got a good idea of how this game is.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game annoyed me for the first few hours, but then I learned how to cope with the silly mind map connections, and got used to the character interactions. Now I actually miss it. Rather than searching through huge mind maps to figure out which nodes to connect, the best thing to do is whenever you get a new clue, go to the mind map and check for an exclamation mark and a new chain link icon. Try for the connection now, as it will have to include the new exclamation mark node. I liked…

positive · AI labelView post →I hate to down vote this one because there was clearly enough love put into it, but fundamentally the game just doesn't work. It is a game where you put together clues by making connections between them in a mind-graph. In theory it makes sense for a logical puzzle game. But the connections you are supposed to make are complete guesswork. Any two facts *could* be associated with one another, and there's little in the plot that would favor one link over the other. If it had been based on finding…

The First Cases is a detective game where you play the titular Poirot, and investigate multiple interwoven crimes. The bulk of gameplay consists of investigating scenes, interviewing subjects, and making connections on a mind map. The game is fairly linear, with only minor deviations allowable. I liked the ambient sounds, and the voice acting was solid. I also really enjoyed the static character portraits that you…

The mechanics feel tedious, the puzzles are almost entirely dialogue (and the text is riddled with typos and weird phrasings), and at no point do you actually "solve" anything. At the end of the game, the case is solved without any input from you. Feels more like a visual novel than a game.
