What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 258 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (21,438 of 23,696 positive).
Players praise the game as a nostalgic and polished remaster that modernizes the classic RTS experience. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the monetization, especially paywalling blood effects and DLC not included in premium editions. [4][5][6] A few players report technical issues like crashes and changes that reduce strategic variety. [7][8]

I refuse to support the fact that they added blood and bones as a paid dlc when this was available as a feature in the original game at no extra cost. Not only that but they decided to exclusively tuck it inside the "Expansion Pass" I guess my "Premium Edition" wasn't so premium after all.

If you grew up with Age of Mythology, Age of Mythology: Retold feels like a love letter that actually sticks the landing. The visuals are gorgeous, the mythology atmosphere is nailed, and the whole package feels modern without losing what made the original special. What surprised me most is how complete it feels. The campaign/story content is still a blast, the DLC support adds real value, and the game balance is in …

The core of Age of Mythology (which is great) is here and as good as ever, but for a "definitive" edition, this feels a little sloppy. Accessibility options that turn themselves on inexplicably, social integration that nobody asked for, money grubbing DLC and premium editions, and a bit of a tacky corporate veneer throughout the UI and aesthetics. From a strictly nostalgic standpoint, the updated campaign …

Age of Mythology: Retold is a remastered version of Ensemble Studio’s hugely influential 2002 original. With a fresh coat of HD paint, a visual overhaul for every game unit, and brand new animations, Retold is a nostalgic jaunt for seasoned veterans and an excellent jumping-on point for interested newcomers. Broadly speaking, Age of Mythology differs from the standard, historical Age of Empires series, in that it …

Age of Mythology Retold returns the way a classic should polished, confident, and clearly built with respect for what made the original special in the first place. This feels less like a simple visual upgrade and more like a thoughtful reimagining that understands its roots while modernizing where it counts. What stands out immediately is how well it balances nostalgia with new ideas. Core systems remain intact, but …

79% of the 258 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Age of Mythology: Retold. The complaint that keeps coming up: blood and bones effects are paywalled as DLC. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator Metacritic, Age of Mythology: Retold was received "generally favourable" based on 28 critic reviews for PC and 7 critic reviews for Xbox Series X. As per OpenCritic, 86% of the 34 critic reviews recommend the game. PCGamesN complimented the enhanced UI, describing it as clearer and more vibrant while offering a more user-friendly experience. Criticism was aimed at the upgraded visuals; some players may find the new detailed art lacks the original's charm and feels too generic. Windows Central commented positively on the enhanced visuals and the faithful recreation of the audio and soundtrack. They also noted the improvements in gameplay and the range of…

The game is good, and from what I've played, retold does a good job of polishing it up for modern machines. That said, I've refunded the game. I bought the "Premium Edition", under the impression that it would get me all but the most recent DLC at time of writing (Obsidian Mirror). This wound up being only half-true. For whatever…

positive · AI labelView post →it turns out premium edition does not include new dlc, which is exactly opposite from what devs promised
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Instead of trying to balance this game for a longer life and healthy community, they have blatantly resorted to Pay-to-win mechanics with broken races and powers. Spitting on the legacy of a good game for loose change.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes, the graphics are way better, and more mythical stuff Including the wonder abilities, god paths and units and titans are a good step up, and the different approaches the AI can take (defensive, agressive,m balanced etc) are very nice but gameplay changes around titans and wonders have vastly reduced replayability. You can no longer play a defensive strategy with a wonder to win. All the wonders do is augment your myth unit and titan capabilities. It feels like a rush towards getting titans,…

Im fluent in Greek, Egyptian, Norse words for attacking, obeying orders and other commands thanks to this game. Greek - Prostagma, Etimos, voulome, metalefs, drytomos, Proseche, etc Egyptian - Ark , You-a-ear, Antio, Eel-you-refer, Eya air erracter, etc Norse - já , satt and some other i cant spell Just one complaint - Why original VO was not kept (there is a community mod to restore it as…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to say this is a great game, with good graphics, retooled god powers and additional storylines (in the DLC). However despite putting many hours of gameplay into it I have had one, nonstop problem. IT WON'T STOP CRASHING!!! Seriously, I am sick and tired of doing something, or trying to save, or whatever sets it off and suddenly I'm looking at my desktop with a useless Bugsplat error reporting popup that thus far hasn't fixed a damn thing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I grew up with Age of mythology and i really love the franchise,Retold is a huge + on graphics and overall game experience. But theres some stuff the company does that really makes it feel forced to buy stuff that you dont even want and before everyone judge this comment let me tell you why i say this. Personally im a mainly greek and occasionaly norse pantheon kind of guy,so i was kinda forced to get full premium upgrade to experience freyr and finish my norse pantheon and now with the new…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think if you have the old version of age of mythology, I would keep playing that. The add to this game in function is really nice, and the ease of play against the computer at varying levels is fun. I've gotten myself into... the 17th percentile before, but this version of the game has such a hard push towards live service it loses a lot of the cozy familiarity of AoM in exchange for soulless techbro greed. There are some updates I could swoon over, the character updates have been good as far…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not particularly good blood/corpse effects cost as much as the base game. I mean, seriously? Hard pass. Save your money. Greediest developers I have bought from.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has felt like a huge cash grab, they charge you for the base game, and every single thing they release for content is another additional charge. The AI is somehow worse than the original game which is from the 2000s. Units often don't respond to commands and must be directed multiple times. The general gameplay is so strange, counter units are completely unstoppable against units they counter. You finally get to build a titan, only for it to get mowed down by a couple heroes it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Making people pay for a feature that was free last game is not it what was the point in buying premium edition?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They ruined the game with poor balancing choices. It's one of those situations in which they balance for PvP but ruin the campaign, treating it like and afterthought. If you want to play a tolerable campaign play the Extended Edition.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another unfortunate victim of corporate, greedy nostalgia bait. This was the last game I pre-ordered in my life, and seeing how that something like blood and unit decaying after a battle(rather than just disappearing) has been added as a DLC that you can only access through a full-price expansion pass shows I made the right choice in never pre-ordering again. Nevermind the fact if you bought the "Premium Edition". Unit decay and remains on the battlefield existed in the original game from…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've waited a year for this review. I've waited all this time waiting for them to integrate the transitions of dead units into skeletons. Now that the Blood and Bones DLC is out, I feel cheated. They were very lazy in not making the mythic unit skeletons and replacing them with banal human skeletons. The previous game had the sprites of all the mythic unit skeletons during the decay transition. This was crucial for immersion. I feel betrayed. I'm very sad and disappointed. (T_T)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought it for the nostalgia, i keep playing because its better than most of the games being released now days. Single player and multiplayer are what it was and still peak. However what seals the deal for me now is the co-op single player arena of the gods. Its all peak.

Attacks settlements it has not scouted, spams units without ever having to build more than 3 farms etc. After Hard difficulty the game is not fun anymore. Its just me trying to figutre how the AI is going to make me its personal pinata.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A wonderful and more chaotic version of Age of Empires. Extremely good re-make of a classic RTS game that truly deserves to be played by any fan who loves history and/ or mythology. It does fix and make very good changes over the original. Feel the power of the Gods in your hand and become a legend! Great and fun campaigns. Lot of replayability with all the unique civilizations and different god options each of them has. DLC is worth it as well, specially heavenly spear.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To hop on the trend: If 9 games influenced me it would be these. Special shout out to Chemicus a point-and-click puzzle game designed for german highschool graduates, that I completely memorised when I was 10. And also Age of Mythology which sparked my love for all mythologies 💜
positive · AI labelView post →amazing game, amazing remaster, desperately hoping for more civs. celtic, yoruba, slavic, akan/ghana, maori, haiti, and my dream civ/religion would be a lovecraftian/cthulhu pantheon tbh where you play as r'lyeh--or just a powerful collection of cultists. If we can get atlantis, I also would hope we can get camelot with some robin hood myths as well as maybe some celtic influences. anyway, if you like mythology, or RTS, or strategy in any way--or just medieval warfare, or magic, get this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Mythology was one of the first strategy games I ever played, and honestly, one of the first games I played in general. Coming back to it in Retold feels like a huge wave of nostalgia. The best part is that this isn't just a simple remaster. The game looks better than ever while still keeping the charm that made the original so memorable. Seeing the myths, gods, mythical creatures, and civilizations brought to life with modern visuals has been a lot of fun. I also appreciate that the…

PLEASE Devs, FIX THE D3D12 ERROR I BEG OF YOU. I have given you MORE then enough time to fix these errors, and yet they languish unfixed. I have updated my…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are technically impressive, but the visual design is a downgrade from the original. There is simply too much visual noise: excessive detail, effects and clutter make the game harder to read at a glance. The original had a much cleaner and more coherent art style that worked far better for an RTS. The UI and overall layout also feel unnecessarily cluttered and less intuitive. Beautiful on a technical level, but visually and functionally much worse than the original.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →literally the best RTS experience i've ever had. theres no reason to play the original over this. 10/10 game no complaints except that i suck
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This negative review is only here to point out that the "Premium Edition", which supposedly has to include the DLCs, still has locked content. That’s a pretty scammy move. "Obsidian mirror" and "new gods" packs are excluded from the premium pack. The game itself is great though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Age of Mythology: Retold is one of the best RTS games and remasters I have ever played. Everything in this game is beautiful: the campaigns, the sounds, the music, the visual style, the gameplay, the graphics. The developers always release balance patches and new features that the original version doesn't have, such as a 1st-person view or unit damage counting. New PvE content and monthly events have been released as well. Although the developers have already released all the DLC which they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like fundamentally this game could only please old school nerds and competition players these days so there's really no point in building on it. I'm hoping we get more variety in Age of Mythology eventually but it's not the same thing.
neutral · AI labelView post →I am completely fucked up on Age of Mythology. The chokehold this game has on me is worrying
positive · AI labelView post →Adding features as blood and skeletons and locking it behind a paid DLC is the most greedy and bastard way . L to all of the devs which are doing this . You are limiting everything cool behind a pay to win wall that's not ok . GAMING IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FOR THE RICH ! Stop limit everything behind a paid DLC be better !
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The only good remake out there! They reworked the Chinese Pantheon which was a reskin of other units from different pantheons and the campaign was redone into something more enjoyable than before. And finally they add new pantheons like the Japanese that we can currently play and in the future as the time of writing this we'll get Aztecs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Damn, how they ruined my favorite childhood game. There's a bunch wrong, but there's two major things that stand out. 1) The new voices are..pretty bad, and the animations feel like a phone-game from 2010, it's bizare. 2) And this is the big one, the music, and God art i'm 90% positive is Gen AI made. Osiris has 6 fingers (including the hand anatomy like 6 finger bones in the hand). Prometheus' eyes are looking in completely different directions. Bast's sistrum has mismatched perpective…

For a rookie to the genre, the past prestige of RTS games may be all but mysterious; nowadays, players often see only the genre’s remaining remnants as it struggles to remain alive in decline. Yet, i guess that most youthful people share a familiar recollection: sitting on a tiny stool behind an older brothers or sisters pc, observing them ordering armies and executing impressive strategies in an RTS, a instant that, for us many,…
