Players widely praise the story and atmosphere as the game's strongest elements. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the combat as repetitive and the controls as poor. [1][4][5] Some players find the gameplay tedious but still recommend the game for its narrative. [6][7][8]

- Advice - If you ARE going to play it, play on Easy (which is Normal on Xbox), just read the manuscripts online at the end of each episode, and don't worry about the coffee thermoses because they don't unlock anything. - review - This game wouldn't have been so annoying if I'd known the difficulty levels were renamed for PC. - What's "Easy" on PC is "Normal" for consoles. - What's "Normal" on PC is "Hard" for …

Play on easy. Combat is by far the absolute worst, most grueling part of this game and there's no shame in just turning it down to get to the good stuff: The story and atmosphere. And there's plenty of that.

Alan Wake Review Overview Alan Wake has been sitting on my list for a long time, and I finally decided to play it. I also went for all the achievements, and overall I had a phenomenal experience. It is obviously an older game and some parts show their age, but the story, characters, atmosphere, and simple gameplay still hold up really well. It is not perfect, especially when it comes to repetitive combat and the …

It feels like playing through a dark TV series. You follow Alan Wake, a writer who gets pulled into a strange, supernatural story. The atmosphere is the best part—creepy, tense, and really well done. Using light to fight enemies is a cool idea, though the combat can get a bit repetitive after a while. Overall, it’s a great pick if you enjoy story-focused games with a thriller vibe. (4/5)

The story is genuinely one of a kind a writer trapped inside his own horror manuscript. The atmosphere is just perfect. The environments, the eerie silence, the vibe nothing else feels quite like it. The gameplay does get repetitive though. Flashlight, shoot, repeat. By the midpoint it starts feeling like a chore. But for the story it's worth it.

87% of the 275 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Alan Wake. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive combat. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Alan Wake received "generally favorable" reviews on both platforms according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Michael Plant from The Independent gave the game a score of 5/5. He praised Alan Wake for its "flawless pacing", which "ensures a compulsive experience". The editing and plot were also received very positively, making the game "the kind of experience the current console generation was made for." The Daily Telegraph rated the game 9/10 with editor Nick Cowen being impressed by its "stunning" look, stating the town of Bright Falls and its surrounding environment to be "authentic" in terms of architecture, vegetation, weather and lighting. He described the atmosphere as being…

Turns out I had missed an achievement about playing Fanorona and I’ve just been putting off beating that. I got that done though. And decided to swap it out with Portal 2. neutral · AI labelView post →I'm playing the Alan Wake remaster and oh my god, the early 2010s "sad man in a tweed jacket" game vibes are simply immaculate. I love it, don't get me wrong, but it's funny how the sheer artistic brilliance of Alan Wake 2 genuinely made me forget what an Xbox 360-ass game the original was lmao
positive · AI labelView post →Next game has been decided. 🫡 I really enjoyed Control on PS4, but some areas had severe fps drops and I never played the DLCs. Excited to do so now to see how it connects to Alan Wake. This might very well make me start up Alan Wake II after. Never did play that. 👀

negative · AI labelView post →Tried it. Just isn't for me. Story checks out, it's interesting. But not interesting enough for me to battle with terrible camera, movement, shooting.... literally anything tied to game action. If this were a book, I'd read it right now. As a game, pass.

neutral · AI labelView post →[Spoiler-free] Alan Wake is quite a miserable experience, but it got us Alan Wake the Second, so I will let it live. Whopping 7 years after Max Payne 2, Remedy gave birth to Alan Wake, an action-survival horror (YES, HORROR) game telling the story of a writer that simply wanted a peaceful holiday with his wife, away from the shenanigans that come with being a bestseller, yet somehow ended up in a series of tragic and twisted events that result in the disappearence of his wife. Let's start…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →**Alan Wake Review** Alan Wake is a fantastic psychological thriller that blends horror, mystery, and cinematic storytelling into an unforgettable experience. Its dark atmosphere, eerie environments, and intriguing narrative keep you hooked from beginning to end. The flashlight-based combat system makes every encounter feel intense, while the story constantly leaves you questioning what is real and what is fiction. The episodic structure also gives the game the feeling of a TV series, with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves better. Alan Wake 2 remains one of my favorite games of the decade. And if survival horror isn't—or is no longer—your thing, choose the option to kill enemies with a single bullet; it makes the adventure feel more Lynchian.
positive · AI labelView post →Alan Wake 2 is a very cool story that occasionally breaks out into the most annoying video game I've ever played.
neutral · AI labelView post →I played what I think was the first half of Alan Wake 2 but then I dropped because I had this strong conviction that Alan Wake 2 is a game you can only play at night during winter. neutral · AI labelView post →Just finished episode 4 of Alan Wake. Ive been enjoying the game, but that "Stage Show" on the farm was ROUGH. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s not a positive review, it’s a neutral one. I can’t recommend this game and I can’t say it’s not worth playing either. It started great. The atmosphere reminded me of Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone – a mystery, a small town with a complicated history. The soundtrack in this game is on point, so every song matched the environment really well, one of my favourite parts of Alan Wake. I was playing on Steam Deck, and the game looked really nice on a smaller screen. Of course, it’s old now,…
