Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (2,747 of 3,531 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful Greek-inspired world and approachable Soulslike combat. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the lack of a map and confusing level design. [4][5][6] Some players find the story and dialogue overly verbose and repetitive. [7][8][9]

Ah, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars. A beautiful city inspired by Greek and Roman myths. At least, that's what the loading screens keep telling me. In reality, the city of Aphes feels like it was designed by a sadistic architect whose only goal was to make every street corner look exactly like the last ten. Why use landmarks when you can just copy-paste the same marble column for the 500th time? But the real cherry on …

Reading and dialogue the game. Seriously, as you advance through the story NPCs will repeat the same story over and over again with some slight differences regarding the new areas. Not all voice lines have been recorded so you will also have plenty of stuff to read if you do not want to miss anything, not mentioning the 300 collectibles that repeat part of the story over and over again. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a surprisingly easy-to-pick-up action RPG that pulls a lot of inspiration from the Souls-like genre, and speaks in a much more friendly manner than those types of games. It's perfect for fans of the genre who really like the series, but it also appeals to those who want a challenging experience that is at the same time a great deal of fun and enjoyment. At its core, the game's combat …

57% of the 187 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Asterigos: Curse of the Stars. The complaint that keeps coming up: no map or compass, making navigation frustrating. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Asterigos: Curse of the Stars received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, except for the PC version which received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 54% of critics. Ryan Costa of RPGamer called the game's scope expansive, but criticizing the lack of lip sync during dialog as immersion breaking. He remarked that the game was both beautiful and had a strong combat system, but that leveling up could make bosses too easy, and some quest items were overly obtuse to find. Describing the game as tough, he nevertheless called it approachable,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trash soul-like wannabe. I actually tried my hardest to like this game, but with horribly empty open world, unvoiced story (about 10% is voiced), repetitive tasks, lack of minimap, lack of fast travel, and many, many more problems, I just could not care about spending any more time on this game. You are dead in 3 attacks even if you level your health a lot, you are stun-locked from ANY enemy attack, your range options are very limited and require multiple different outputs just to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can recommend the game for casual fans of the genre or new players that are interested in the genre. For me the game was easy (on the hardest difficulty) so hardcore players that look for a challenge will most likely be disappointed. TLDR: Game is enjoyable but there's too much reading and bosses are just alright. Personally I have only played the base game and can not say anything about how the DLC might change up the gameplay. Leveldesign For me the exploration was one of the best…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Asterigos: Curse of the Stars immediately stands out with its vibrant, high-contrast visuals. The main character, Hilda, really pops against the world’s environment, and the ancient Roman-inspired setting infused with fantasy elements—like werewolves and bird-people—feels unique and intriguing. Despite the colorful art style, the tone is surprisingly dark, featuring mature themes like torture, suicide, and frequent swearing. It’s clear the game is aimed at a more mature audience than its…

I'm amazed I wasn't aware of this 2 years ago at release. First game by indie Acme Gamestudio. I'll be watching out what they do next!
positive · AI labelView post →I love the art style, i love the setting, i love the main char. But damn, the controls in this game are complete rubbish. It doesn't even make a difference whether you play with a mouse and keyboard or a controller. They're just so awful that you'd rather have both your hands chopped off than continue playing. In 1992, you could have overlooked such terrible controls, but not in 2022. Even if the rest of the game WERE an 11/10, the controls would bring the whole thing down to 0.1/10. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I saw all the other reviews complaining about a lack of a map / large and confusing levels and thought that it was no big deal. The large levels aren't a problem, but every time you complete an area you go back to the main hub and they tell you to go somewhere else, but give extremely minimal guidance on how to get there. And the hub is super needlessly confusing too, every path to an area is just a random doorway in the wall and all the walls look the same. Sometimes they'll tell you to go…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first it seemed an easy souls-like with funny and responsive combat, though the more you play, the more levels become bigger and with less soul and structure; however, when I stopped playing, combat has suddenly become so incredibly unbalanced, unplayable. Story has always been just bad (the narration, precisely). Level design and mission flow are probably the main reasons I dropped the game. There's no indication of where to go (either explicit through HUD or, better, in the world design…

I would recommend it to anyone who: -likes soulslikes, but doesn't mind if the game is easy (it's nowhere near as difficult as a DS game) -has a friend that is too scared to play soulslikes (really, recommend them this game) -doesn't mind reading a lot between fights to understand why you are doing what you are doing That said, it is a really good game, but I'll go into more detail. Let's start with the combat, enemies and bosses, since most people are curious…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Many games can work without maps due to having well made level design that naturally fits together, with an environment that lets the player find the correct way. Unfortunately, this is not the case here. The level design is the weakest part of this game, and it's made worse due to the lack of a map. If you're the type of person that take long breaks from each game, instead of finishing a game quickly in a few days, this becomes nearly impossible to continue. At least that's what happened…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is okay. I don't know what the developers were thinking when they decided to go in on the soulslike aspect of it, because it honestly just takes away from the enjoyment of the game. It's not a difficult game, it's just tedious. The story isn't all that interesting and is presented in a way that is either "lore dump" or needlessly cryptic. It's trying to do too many things. There's a fun game in here. Weapon switching and magical powers feel good, the character movement is solid and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Asterigos is a souls-like with a lot of charming things to love, and just as many really frustrating things that ruin the experience. If you've played a lot of souls-likes, and are looking for another one, this will scratch the itch, it's fine. But I would recommend a lot of other games in the genre over it, sadly. If you are going to play it, here's two crucial pieces of advice: 1) Play on normal difficulty, NOT challenging. The difficulty only affects how much damage you take from enemies,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a good game. It really reminds me of the Darksiders 2 era, and you can truly feel how much effort the developers put into it. Even the story is interesting in its own way - although there are quite a lot of lore notes to read. Sometimes it becomes really boring to read them, especially when a note doesn’t have any clear connection to the main story. There’s plenty of content: progression, secrets, upgrades, skill trees, and more. The only thing that genuinely annoyed me was the lack of…

I thought that I would enjoy it when I first encountered it, and toyed with the idea of picking it up during a Steam sale. I ended up grabbing it from a modest bundling site, but I couldn't be more pleased with the value I've gotten from this game. With the amount of playtime I'll probably end up with, it would have been a good value even at full price! Let's get the few negatives out of the way first: While the story is…

There are a number of issues that can be highlighted and used to bypass this game. For example: 1. The enemy detection is bad 2. Hit boxes are off and the the enemies do not get stunned half the time 3. Hilda when stunned, stays crouched or laying for far too long 4. Everyone's favorite "Who on earth builds a game like this with NO MAP" 5. Audio misdirection's 6. Can be attacked in text cut scenes. Of which you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a while I wanted to find something that is genuinely good about this game, but all I've found is that Asterigos tries to be a lot of things and fails at all of them. It tries to voice the dialogues, but only a small part of lines are voiced. It tries to give a Horizon-like protagonist, but Hilda has no character depth whatsoever. It tries to add climbing, but even Elden Ring has better climbing. It tries to have a story, but the writing is dumb, generic, and predictable. It tries to have…

neutral · AI labelView post →Sadly, this game doesn't feel good to play. The combat, exploration, lore, and storytelling are all lacking depth, refinement, and a real clear vision. There's so much to read and learn about the world that at first it would seem like a well-developed and written game. Sadly, it's more about quantity than quality. The same can be said about all of the aspects of this game. We all love our clunky AA games, but this one is just not worth my time.

The combat itself is well below average, and the movement speed is way too slow. The devs had some good ideas, but ithey have been implemented poorly. Even on sale, this is still likely to dissapoint.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Originally wanted to thumb it up. The combat is above average. There are worse games to play but do the disconnected story and piss-poor final boss fight justify a thumbs up?

positive · AI labelView post →This game is just not fun and also has a lot of very unpolished aspects to it. The levels feel very empty and there is not really anything interesting to loot. You have all 6 weapons at the start and all of them have like 7 moves. The enemies are completely braindead and the combat doesn't feel good. The graphics behave weirdly often, especially the shadows and I mean that shouldn't be, especially since I play on Ultra Quality. I will probably eventually finish the story but it's really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this game can click if you're someone who's ok with mid combat and it's fine with characters not having much personality, mainly because there is a pretty decent amount of content, even if not the best. Lots of dialogs (I started skipping after a few since people really lacked personality and the story is not mindblowing), the level design has a couple nice souls-like shortcuts but in general is hard to figure out where you are. Fighting works and feels refined, but you don't feel the…

The combat is a bit jank and the story kinda sucks, However, The biggest thing that annoyed me was the Areas, almost everything in a area looks exactly the same! you walk down a street, turn left and in that same street everything looks identical as the street that you came from. This makes navigation a pain. 5/10 So glad that i got this game on sale.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Asterigos: Curse of the Stars could be called a Souls Lite, a game with soulslike mechanics but also with difficulty levels, lots of health and other items, and combat that's challenging in places but never frustrating, although the difficulty ramps up quite a bit in the second half of the game. The combat is well-designed and effective. You can equip two weapons and you have a variety of regular and magic weapons right from the start. Each type of weapon has it's own special attack and as you…

I've tried starting this game three separate times, and every attempt ends the same way. I reach the first major shanty-town area and immediately lose all interest. Leveling up looked stressful. Of the upgrades I saw, most were "this is action is faster! but now it cost more to use..." Everything above here didn't contribute to my refund. Controls were REALLY jank/stiff. Movement deadzone was too high so you didn't start moving till you were almost halfway into your joystick. I fixed this using the steam overlay…

neutral · AI labelView post →Overall I think that Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a pretty good game. It is punching way above its weight class and is a fairly priced game for the quantity and quality of content that you receive. Combat, visuals and music are great and I hope other devs take notes. Some cheep feeling deaths.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL:DR Overall, this game feels like a labor of love that was mislabeled "Souls," which resulted in it getting lost in a sea of similar titles that fall short of that claim. This game is good for what it is, which feels more like an indie God of War or a Wayfinder. Still, I would recommend the game, though I think it would have been better priced at $20/25 - Longer: I feel like I can safely recommend this game after 4 hours, not knowing how long it is or where it's going, because it feels very…

Asterigos gets a lot of things right, and a lot of things wrong, it's not perfect by any means however, if you're new to the souls type games this would be a good one to start on. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing almost 40 hours, I guess I have to recommend it. The graphics, music and story depth are impressive. The upgrade system works well but seems really minimal in overall effectiveness. Where the game is a big let down to me is the combat. Many times I found myself stuck in an animation unable to dodge or attack until the enemy finished their move. It makes for an unsatisfactory experience. Maybe it was just me, but didn't enjoy the fighting at all. For the most part used the staff…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played for less than an hour so perhaps I'm missing something but the beginning was extremely underwhelming. The movement is janky, the enemies are boring and hit-sponges, and the story less than passable. Again, I might be missing something, but what I saw made me uninstall it fairly fast.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is not a soulslike it's an actiongame. BUT it tries to give you hard bossfights but the gameplay is much to clunky. IF you would like to copy soulslikes, the input has to be rly good. From Software does it perfect, others come rly cloes but Asterigos is way behind!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea of the game is nice, and I like some aspects of the customization of the builds. However, the game runs quite poorly on my hardware, with frequent stuttering at 1080p in 1vs1 fights. There´s also stutter in the main hub, and when I move the camera around, the shadows far away jitter. It´s not completely unplayable, although it can cost getting you hit (not great in a soulslike) and breaks a bit the experience. Movement seems fluid, but attack animations are a bit slow paced for my…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Asterigos is what you get when you try to make a soulslike without the expertise of From Software. Biggest offenders are mind-numbingly uninspired story/dialogues, boring combat and OP fire staff that lets you cheese almost every threat from distance. Seriously why would you invest in any melee weapon if it hits as hard as it does and lets you kill everything with a simple dodge? But the worst of all is lack of navigation. I could forgive the confusing maps that has weird ass connections with…

And I've played so many of them, I feel like I can at least decently gauge if a game has potential or not. Asterigos does not. It's just ... boring and clunky. The most important parts about a Soulslike are: - combat - exploration - build variety - fashion (!) Combat is self-explanatory. Is it fun to fight even the lowliest enemy? In Dark Souls 1 the first…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →VERY MUCH on the fence with this one. Neutral tilted positive. Buy on deep sale. A rough soulslike that would be passable if it wasn't for the most braindead quest design ever. Each zone you explore, kill, fight a boss, return to hub. However if you kill some bosses too fast, or open doors in the wrong order, or don't run back IMMEDIATELY after getting certain quest items, then those quests instantly fail, without telling you. And yes, those quests are required for the secret ending. BUT…
