What people are saying
Mixed praise for art and combat, but many criticise difficulty and balance.
Many players praise the game's art style and combat animations, calling it "stylish and ambitious" and noting great art and worldbuilding. However, a significant number of negative reviews focus on the difficulty curve, with some calling it "overtuned in act 3" and beyond absurd. [8][6][28][32]
Some players argue the game is not harder than Slay the Spire and is "very well balanced for anyone with experience in deckbuilders." Others counter that the lack of a card skip option and poor RNG make runs feel repetitive and unfair. [22][30][36]

neutral · AI labelView post →There's no plot to speak of, only a cool setting and a premise I won't regurgitate from the store page. Instead, look at the rating. It's kinda crippled for something so robust, creating a dissonance. I wouldn't call the game underrated, compared to something like Dragon Front it's doing fine, but a 1000 reviews is nothing for the obvious amount of love and effort involved in Oresa's making. It's on display! The fluidity and the oomph. The trailers don't lie - the camera moves in a fancy way…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the overall eurojank vibe of this game and its aesthetic, it kind of reminds me of Oban Star Racers in a weird way. But I feel like it's way overtuned in act 3, among other things. I'm no deckbuilder pro but I have like 500 hours across a number of roguelike deckbuilders, and ones that are way more sophisticated than this game, and I've only managed to win 1 out of 7 or 8 runs. Runs are quite lengthy for this type of game so losing is certainly demotivating because of the 1-2 hour time…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this for almost 20 hours and never completed a run even on the lowest difficulty expedition. I REALLY wanted to like this game, but the final boss on the third and final floor of a run is extremely difficult. So many times I went through a slog of easier combat right up until a huge difficulty spike with the final boss. Beating the final boss on a run requires a significant defensive focus that often means you're building your deck around that strategy. As a result attacking strength…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a card game: The game does not feature a skip option for card rewards. It tries to "balance" this by offering a lot of card removes, but all this does actually is remove choice in reward nodes because you're ALWAYS picking card remove to get rid of basics and lots of common card rewards that are often actively harmful rather than helpful. Doesn't really feel like the mechanics which are built to suggest strategic play are supported by... having a strategy. You kind of just try to faceroll…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great visuals and cool characters But my god the RNG is rough, barely.. I mean barely made it past the third zone and had to end the run because I had 2 hp left. I figured their would be more progression unlocks to help you get further like HP or something.. but all you get is a new character and side companion. These help with new tactics, but the struggle is real! Constant situations where no matter what you're going to get hit.. but who hits worse scenarios. Not sure how other people make…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am actually shocked at all the negative reviews, comparing this game to Slay the Spire and then complaining about the difficulty curve. How can you play Slay the Spire and write a review saying this game is hard and unbalanced? Slay the Spire is one of the sweatiest roguelike deckbuilders out there, one mistake and you are toast... This game is much more forgiving and even without a proper tutorial or introduction to the game mechanics, if you play good enough you can beat the game or at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An altogether good game, made patently unfun by (lack of) balancing. A lesson to developers: give the player a win, before making the game more difficult. With the exception of roguelites where you HAVE to level up to succeed more (which this doesn't seem to be, maybe my limited experience with the game makes me wrong in this but I doubt it), games give you a win, then give you a challenge to overcome. It's a solid formula. Having played almost 6 hours, made it to the final boss multiple…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel a bit conflicted about this one. First, for the price that I paid, I definitely got my money's worth. I can't complain about the value factor at all. I just want to point that out because the game is definitely engaging enough that the time I sunk into it felt like an investment and not a waste. As for the gameplay, I do agree with some of the negative reviews on here that there is an issue with scaling. Enemies scale much more quickly than you do, even if you are optimizing your deck…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice art style and combat visuals. That's about it. This game's difficulty scaling and RNG system is beyond ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ absurd. It's basically a card battler for masochists. There's an entire thread of customers complaining about this very subject, FOR YEARS, yet the developer of this game chose to ignore all of it. I have 16 hours put into the game but have yet to complete even one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ run of it or unlock even ONE achievement. Life's too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ short! Go play something else. Like Monster…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the game from January 2025 Humble Choice Maybe I just sucked at playing Rouguelike Deckbuilder games. 8 hrs in, 7 runs attempted, always fail at the final boss fight on floor 3, on the easiest difficulty. I have reached level 27 without any successful run, mostly with Sora + 41-DE. At this point, I am just tired and don't even want to try other heroes I just unlocked. If I cannot even beat the game on the easiest difficulty with the intended starting hero, would I have better luck with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never do reviews but this game deserves one because its way under-rated and should get way more attention. I love deckbuilders but rarely do they hold my attention for very long. Ive only really started putting time into Oresa, but for me this already ranks with Slay the Spire, Alina of the Arena, Balatro etc., games that Ive put 500+ hours in. Theres such a variety of playstyles, characters and cards, plus the dynamic fights feel awesome. The only thing lacking is that in the current…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's good, not great. It's a solid foundation, I like the artstyle and the combat system is good, though still a little basic. However, it is a little buggy, I sometimes get a glitch where the combat menu suddenly stops working but at least you can just quit from the pause menu and then reload the save and it'll work fine again. If you can get it for cheap it's worth a look.

neutral · AI labelView post →I dunno. I've tried this game out a few times now. On the one hand, the combat animations are way better than any other STS-like. It's nice to see attacks actually play out, and I wish there were more fighter sts-likes. For the negatives though, hoo-ee. There's very little choice or planning, you just kinda roll with what you get. The enemy design all look like people pulled out of a trash pile. There's no real cool factor. The ingame terms are all unnecessarily obtuse words that aren't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+ Beautiful fantasy world + apocalypse + science fiction Good animation - You need to spend 50-100 hours, for nothing, because only after that all the cards and all the characters will open and you will be able to play normally. Why is there no saving before the battle? So that I can study the enemy properly, and not waste an hour of my life again. Few maps, almost no variation within a single character The difficulty rises by leaps and bounds The final bosses have 1,000 lives and…

neutral · AI labelView post →The entire game is just an expedient for the camera-gimmick it is based on: at first it's kind of compelling, but as it's soon revealed, even the spectacle is actually very limited, as there is a very limited set of attack animations shared by many cards. Besides that, the game has such a poor enemy variety that with the exception of a few bosses, you'll have encountered most what there's to see after your first run, and the whole thing becomes incredibly repetitive and boring. The game…

neutral · AI labelView post →A crunchy deckbuilder with great art and worldbuilding and a uniquely fluid feel to the combat. A lot of players seem to be put off by the difficulty curve. My suspicion is that it's not much more difficult than classic deckbuilders like Slay the Spire, but that there's a tension between the game trying to promote a combat experience which is fluid and cinematic and a mechanical system which demands close attention to small details. It feels great to fire off cards quickly and watch your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not for the newcomers - it is intended for experienced deckbuilder gamers. The main reason I cannot recommend this game is that all of the runs feel the same. All of the antiques you can collect do not seem strong. All you need to do is collect a lot of armor before the last fight. All of the other fights seem okay. The combinations between characters are not that strong. One of the biggest issues of this game is that you can't become OP here, and that's what I am curious about in…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is one of the best card battlers I have ever played. What drew me in initially is the art style, compared to legendary card battlers like Slay the Spire 1 and 2 this games visuals are far superior. At first I did have an issue with this game, which is that you cant choose to take not card as a crad reward, however after playing more I beleive this was done intentionally by the devs and was a very smart decison. I cannot count how many runs of other card battlers I have won by getting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the goods: -art style is very nice -animations are awesome, especially the "combo" animations when you hit the enemy with several attacks the neutral: -theres a ton of variety in terms of classes and cards why neutral? on one hand its cool and good, and the other hand it feels bloated, esp on terms of cards, where you have so many different cards, that in the end a lot of them seem same-ish or are just bad same for the classes/characters, in theory very cool, reality is that theres 3 different…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a lot of fun, and the core gameplay loop respects your time. However, there isn't a whole lot there, and the game isn't hard, there just isn't a ton of strategy. As with most deck builders, it's more of a "make the best of what you got" rather than "there is a winning strategy." Balancing is not the best, and the core function of the game doesn't make sense, nor do the tutorials really explain *how* the game works. You pick it up as you, and you'll have a ton of fun for sure. Get…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beneath Oresa is yet another Roguelike Deckbuilder game, but its hard to say that it adds too much to the table over its competitors. Pros: -A decently large cast of characters which provides a decent amount of variety options. Assistant characters can add a little bit of spice (but not that much) -I liked the near vs far distant mechanics -Some of the later characters have some interesting unique mechanics. Cons: -Each character does feel a little bit pigeonholed into just one or two…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beneath Oresa is a stylish and ambitious roguelike deck-builder that attempts to push the genre beyond its familiar 2D format. Developed by Broken Spear Inc. and published by Goblinz Publishing, the game blends card-based combat with positional strategy and punchy 3D animations to create an experience that feels both familiar and distinctly modern. At first glance, it resembles other deck-builders built around runs, branching paths, and escalating fights, but once combat begins, it becomes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After spending around 15 hours on this, I absolutely hate the amount of RNG involved. Usually the rule of thumb is to reduce the RNG, either by eliminating cards or increasing card draw and things like that but the sheer amount of randomness, the lack of permanent upgrades and the various conditions for each hero skill makes it very frustrating. The enemies are randomized from a pool and in a worst case scenario you can end up stuck with ranged enemies while your hero's special is a melee…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →176) Beneath Oresa. Extremely beautifully animated deck-builder - the game is pretty fun but what intrigues me is the depth of setting they seem to have come up with, so that the fragments you see genuinely feel like they're hinting at deeper lore. Gets unfortunately samey on many runs.
neutral · AI labelView post →It was a very promising game with a lot of style. I guess the developers got bored of their pet so they left it to die. half finished game that becomes boring way too quick...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From some1 who has played alot of games like this. This is def's not ment for beginners of the genre. But this game is S tier 9/10 I really hope they make a 2 <3

neutral · AI labelView post →This is an excellent chill roguelike deckbuilder with fantastic, satisfying presentation. This game is not at all difficult for the genre - I could beat the max difficulty fairly consistently, back at a time I was struggling to get to even A10 in STS1 (which is to say, I was bad). I think it is a shame that for years the review scores have languished at mostly positive from complaints about difficulty. The deckbuilding balance is pretty relaxed. You do need to build up synergy, but most…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My second deck-builder after Slay the Spire, and it was good enough to hold my attention with its great graphics and art style, including some cool hero and enemy designs. On sale, or as part of a bundle, I would give it a solid recommendation. But something about the balance seemed off compared to Spire. In that title, the cards you pull gently steer you towards a few interesting deck options, and you have ways to mitigate poor choices later on. In this, often your choices just seem poor, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a huge fan of deckbuilding rogue-likes, with Spire being the obvious gold-standard. The only other S-tier deckbuilders (in my mind) are Inscryption, Shogun Showdown and Balatro, which I believe to be perfect games, though they still don’t rise to Spire’s level of pure joy and replayability. I think the rest of the list is good but not great - Monster Train, Griftlands, Lonestar, Loop Hero, Slots & Daggers would be my A-tier. I haven’t played StarVaders yet but have high hopes. I think…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR; Solid presentation and player classes, but weak deckbuilding and low player agency compared to other games in the genre. First off, the combat/animations are top notch. It sticks out in a great way, and the flow of the animations are really cool to watch as you play your cards in quick succession. There's a lot of variety in the classes available and unique mechanics for each. That said: The game kind of fell apart in the "deckbuilding" part. I didn't feel like I was in control of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyed the art style and visuals, but gameplay loop didn't really hook me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beneath Oresa is decent, but not great The criticisms about the game being super unfair and unbalanced are ridiculous. I've died to the final boss on my first run and won the next four. Similar concepts from other card games apply It shares one part with a lot of the badly designed card games - you can't skip adding cards. But it gives you so many options to remove cards, that you can still end up with slim decks, so I surprisingly don't mind this. It doesn't have high replayability, the 3…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →NOTE - get it on sale, without further support or balance changes, I really don't think it's worth the full price tag, but it's definitely worthwhile overall Slay the spire, with a 3D art style and a zone mechanic (enemies are in 1 of two zones, and your cards do different things depending on if you're in the same zone or opposite zone from them, some move you to their zone, etc.) It's just so sad that the game got abandoned all of a sudden, but I also understand why (small indie title). The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr--solid deckbuilding rougelike with a bit of difficulty, probably a 7 or 8/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A fun game if you enjoy these types of card-based rougelikes, but a lot harder than some of the others I've played. I got the game through a humble bundle, so it ended up being about 2 dollars for me. To illustrate the difficulty, only 30% of players have the achievement for beating a quest/dungeon on the beginning curse level…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun deck builder. Art style is very cool. A lot of negative reviews seem to blame the difficulty of the game, but I think the difficulty is good for anyone familiar with deck builder games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Are you looking for a fun rogue-like deck-building game? Have you played Slay the Spire or like the visuals of Borderlands, or both? Well, today’s your lucky day I present to you 'Beneath Oresa'. While the game takes inspiration from other titles, it is still unique in its own right. On the surface, it may appears to be just a card game, but beneath *wink* *wink*, it resembles Your Only Move Is Hustle a different turn-based fighting game I’ve played. But that’s beside the point, what Beneath…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a very fun game with a very fun concept and a great balanced cast of characters who each have a unique feeling play style to mix up the formula. I've enjoyed countless hours of this game and can only complain that the game feels *too* balanced. Unlike other deck-building roguelikes on the market that I've also played this game feels too scared to lean into the chaotic imbalance that helps make each run feel different. Relics/Antiquites buffs are usually waaaay minimal to make runs feel…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have enjoyed playing this game, with a variety of deck types between characters. I don't know why there are complaints about difficulty. For those of use who enjoy a challenge, it's pretty fun. Sure, if you play on the highest difficulty level, you are not always going to win. But if you keep it on base difficulty, it's pretty rare that you can't win the game, with almost any character combo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A well-made, totally competent deckbuilder. The positioning mechanic — pushing enemies around a line — is a reasonable idea and the presentation is sharp. My honest take is that it doesn't have a hook. Nothing is wrong with it, but nothing pulled me back either, and in a genre this crowded that matters. Worth your time if you've already played the big ones and want more. Not where I'd start.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Slay the spire's better looking cousin. Not quite as massive as Slay the spire, but not small either. 3 different classes with 3 heroes each gives you at least 9 challenging runs through the underground of Oresa (if you don't fail ofc). +++Art style (well well above average for a card game) ++Animations (nice to see how the different cards play out and interact) ++Challenge (I've yet to play a run where I knew victory was assured until the very end, took me around 15 runs to win once with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid until you get to the top levels, then pretty impossible. Would still highly recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World is a fairly generic setting. The artwork however is very nice. Animations flow together well, attacks are flashy, and all together it looks good. Unfortunately, once the art style starts to wear off, the gameplay and balance decisions just make it such a drag to play. You are very powerful early, but enemies quickly out-scale you. I wanted to enjoy playing Beneath Oresa, but ultimately, the balancing makes it more of a chore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The animations are top notch, really satisfying and cool to watch. The gameplay, however, is not top notch, it is mediocre at best. The main gimmick of this game is that the combat area is divided into two areas: near and far. Now you might think you can dance around the areas, dodging enemies between the two different areas. You will be disappointed. The majority of enemies use a ranged attack which can hit you anywhere and melee attacks, well the enemy always moves to your zone before…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great strategic deckbuilder, I'm only four hours in, but I don't see why people are complaining about the difficulty. I came close to beating the 3rd boss in the second run. The game so far is very well balanced for anyone with experience in deckbuilders. If you like StS or Monster Train, you'll probably like this too. - edit - beat the 3rd boss on my 4th run. Don't worry about the difficulty if you've played other deckbuilders.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great roguelike. I love the companion system, where you can pick a second character and you get bonuses based on their playstyle. The game is pretty difficult for me, as I have only beaten it a couple times, but I love trying again. Look for it on sale, maybe, but either way I think it is worth the price if you enjoy this genre!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't really understand why there are so many people bashing the game because of it's difficulty. The game is not the best at explaining itself and you might learn some mecanics the hard way, at higher difficulty setting, it can become unforgiving, but it's not at all broken and it's a ton of fun. It's a really interesting take on the genre that's worth exploring if you like roguelite deckbuilders.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rarely come across a new game I actually like to play, so I'd like to recommend Beneath Oresa, which is basically a Slay the Spire with juicy combat animations. And without those RSI-inducing drag motions. store.steampowered.com/app/1803400/...
positive · AI labelView post →I've had this game on my wish list for a while and when I saw it as a sale on fanatical I decided why not grab it. It's still the same great looking game but, after waiting so long to play it I am disappointed. It just feels awkward and like the cards I collect for any run don't ever quite "click". There's no way to completely avoid taking damage and, as others have said, you often have to decide how much damage you'll take as you watch your health diminish over battles. I get balancing out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels half-baked and unpolished. Can't recommend when you have better alternatives like Monster Train or Slay the Spire.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has potential but the card game elements and mechanics just arent good, balanced, varied, or exciting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is really amazing and fun to play. I would highly recommend it, but be warned the scaling of the game is very poor. You have to either be very lucky or you will just not get far, floor 3 being the worst. Love the game to bits, would love a bit more lore, as it teases it in the intro and somewhat with the dungeons. Just hope floor 3 gets some sort of change, but doubt full. Do not play if it get frustrated easily.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love Slay the Spire but are burned out on it, may I highly recommend Beneath Oresa. Just fantastic game, I only wish it had a sliver of a story.
