What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 175 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,678 of 1,937 positive).
Players praise the game's addictive gameplay loop and blend of genres. [1][2][3] Some find the game becomes too easy or unbalanced after initial hours. [4][5][6] A few reviewers note the game lacks depth or has balance issues. [7][8][9]

To the new Players: You know that disappointing feeling when you put over 40 hours into a cool concept, only to realize you can beat the hardest difficulty just by spamming one thing? That is the unfortunate reality of Border Pioneer right now. It is a deckbuilder that quickly turns into a tower spam simulator because towers are incredibly overpowered compared to regular units. I just beat the last level of the regular campaign (5-3) and I felt like I needed to leave a review because I love this game. The whole time I completely enjoyed it and had so much fun and will definitely keep playing the bonus campaigns/try for high scores and endless mode. Might be my game of the year for real. It's simple yet involved while having meta progession and a great gameplay loop. Play the demo it's a …

This random little indie has no right being as good as it is. Very tightly balanced. Very addictive. Very well designed in basically all aspects. On top of that, the game manages to combine a bunch of genres and features in a way that feels unique despite the space being flooded with hybrid strategy games like this recently. It's not like DotAge, or DawnFolk, or Super Fantasy Kingdom. It's like Border Pioneer. …

Excellent game, easy recommendation at this pricepoint. Didn't "get it" on my first playthrough, but got hooked the second time when I gave it a proper chance. Devs have something original here - this is the kind of game we should be supporting.

Incredibly addictive, deep mini-strategy. Tons of content and a really tight gameplay loop.

60 of 191 · most liked firstThe game is fun for the first few hours. If 15 dollars sounds like a good deal for 3-5 hours of good clean fun, knock yourself out. However: As with most games that are a reasonable price with a pleasing art style, you will find the first few hours of game-play threatening to suck you in, only to quickly find out you've essentially played all of the game's content and exhausted all the creative scenarios the devs have prepared for you, the rest feeling like a slog to pad out time and use…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first few hours of this game are fun but there's not really any additional depth past that. I found myself repeatedly restarting levels hoping to get one of a few actually good starting towers, because without a select few buildings some of the later levels aren't possible. I think I found myself getting especially frustrated in the 4th area. An event popped up, take on some bandits for an extra chest. Sure! Why not? Little did I know, I would be fighting a non-stop stream of bandits for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lack of transparency in what things actually are took the fun out what appeared to be an interesting game. It's simplistic look gave me the impression that it wouldn't be one of those games that gives vague item/enemy descriptions like "does SOME damage", instead of actual numbers, but I guess some developers don't want to scare off players with too much math or something.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, your upgrades dont matter btw. If you get too cool, the game will just buff the enemy. I played on hard, went smoothly. Lvl 60+, and now even easy is too difficult and the enemies are super spongy. Just admit you lack creativity in game design.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't be deceived, this isn't your normal defense city builder, the protagonist is actually a necromancer. So many more of the mechanics make sense that way. Unavailable units that full heal after returning to base? Necromancy. Buildings regenerating at no cost at the end of the wave? Necromancy using the corpses of your foes as building material. No knowledge of spell casting or mediums but able to cast large scale offensive and defensive spells? You're a high level necromancer. You're just…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Chaotic Fun That Could Be Tighter." I randomly stumbled upon Border Pioneers and immediately got the sense it would be a chaotic good time and for the most part, that instinct was right. The game blends tower defense, strategy, and deckbuilding into a fast-paced, unpredictable experience that feels exciting early on. Balance-wise, things are undeniably messy, but during the first several runs, that chaos works in the game’s favor, creating a sense of novelty and constant motion that keeps you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Border Pioneer has good bones. The core gameplay loop feels good. The UI is really slick. Why the negative review? The game balance is utterly atrocious. It's incredibly easy even on the hardest difficulty, with the exception of one sticking point is that depending on your random card gain, you can end up short on food and having to make do while limited on that resource. I hope the devs hire someone to help them with game balance if they are unable to do it themselves; or maybe this is…

neutral · AI labelView post →Fun but feels shallow and limited. I had a good time in my hours, but nothing so far suggests that more hours will lead to more fun as opposed to mostly repetition. I am already feeling mostly repetition. I am sure there is more variety in towers and opponents to unlock. It is a bad sign that my feeling is "oh, a grind" rather than "there are so many awesome things ahead to unlock!" It reminds me a lot of Diplomacy Is Not an Option, except I found this more fun and visually compelling. It's…

neutral · AI labelView post →Klunky Awkward Unimaginative There are games that weve clever elements together to create something new in their genre, that add some twist, some flavour or something to make them special. This is not that game. This is not a special game. The developers saw a tired, overused genre in tower defense, and said we can add nothing new or creative or imaginative. There is no excitement or heat in this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Border Pioneer is a highly enjoyable Tower Defense Economy Building game with Cards. It is turn-based with RTS battles. There is a campaign, different biomes, variety of different enemies, plethora of units to choose from to battle those enemies and a sizable scattering of buildings to build with. The game allows for a lot of creative thinking: how you want to tackle the challenge in the map is up to you. Just towers? You can. Just units? You can. Prefer traps? You can. You…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seemed okay initially, but it got really boring fast. Game feels like a bunch of crap thrown together. There are so many different units and buildings you dont even need most of the time. 99% of the time I placed a unit down I couldn't tell how much stronger I was getting nor was there really any way to tell how powerful the enemy is. It's an interesting concept, but poorly executed. It feels more like a demo than anything. You can't just throw a bunch of cards in and expect the game to get…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A game with no depth or creativity. Every game plays about the same even with the different assistants. You'll get about 3 hours before you realize there is no depth to it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I figured I'd give this game the old 2 hour try, but ended up feeling like I needed to give it a little more time. Unfortunately, my concerns were uniform throughout. UI/UX: There are several small bugs in UI/UX, QoL issues that can really get under your skin in a game that takes as long as this one. The deck tracker has bugged more than once, overlay of text inhibiting view, and other small pet peeves that can be game-changing. Overall, I think the game needs to cook a little longer on unit…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is pretty simple and uninteresting. The difficulty never really stepped up, and I often couldn't tell if anything I was doing actually improved the fights. I'm already very bored and wouldn't recommend this game.

neutral · AI labelView post →game itself is fun and I enjoy it - and that's why the save/load feature not working is an issue, and the developer not responding to email/forum is a problem.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game starts in asian, which automaticallly made the game unplayable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm gonna be honest, when I saw the Chinese logo at the start I should have just refunded it instantly, I was already putting myself out on a limb buying a game published by Yogscast Games. Very dull and repetitive, every run feels the same, you literally do the same things over and over with little to no variance. The actual game is very short, it's deceiving because the level select screen makes it seem like there is a lot more levels but it's actually half of what you think there is. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My gambling addict friend said if I post a review on Border Pioneer and it gets 350 likes and 150 Awards that he will buy me a case of beer, some vodka, and bottle of wine.. So I'm just gonna leave this here
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun game, it is a rougelike/clash of clans/tower defense kind of game and it combines those aspects really well. There are many different playstyles, and there are several characters that suit them. You have to build walls/trees to guide enemies away from your town and elongate their path to allow your troops and your defense buildings time to kill all the enemies. The hardest difficulty, Pioneer, is very hard at times and almost made me quit, but you can restart a wave to a certain…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Proof that even without any super original ideas, so long as you stay focused on a clear vision of what you are trying to accomplish, you will likely create a pretty good video game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6.5/10 Game just gets too easy once you get the hang of it and the achievements should be level based and not character based, if I want to complete all the achievements I can just spam the first levels on pioneer difficulty and its easy..
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not much depth. Feels like 5 stages of tutorial. Random mode is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of poorly scaled enemy spam instead of what could have been nice replayable content.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6/10 + workshop - no undo of last action. oops i put that in the wrong place.. for some its permanent with some things and others cost 5 hammers to move - got to month 10 out of 11 invested a lot in this run each turn i use 190 food and gain 205 auto saves 1 save slot at the start of each round lose my entire run at the end of this wave because i run out of food before it refills entire run is dead, nothing i can do - broken achievements - broken unlocks
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Campaign is wonderful. Endgame is horrible. Endgame maps are tiny-tiny. Cant find room to build at all. Randomized does the same thing. In a strategy game; whydo you feel RNG is a good mechanic? I DETEST that RNG is now even in strategy games. RNG means no skill. You succeed/fail based purely on if the computer says you can play. RNG doesnt belong in strategy games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun tower defense game. It's sorta not a deckbuilder since you mostly use up cards as fast as you get them. And it's not really a roguelite since there's no reason to replay missions. Still there's lots of frequent strategic choices in each mission - which cards to acquire, where to put your buildings, and how to respond to events. Plus combat is fun, different Adjutants offer differing playstyles (some more than others), and passive upgrades offer strategic choices as well. Missions play…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun mix of city builder, tower defense and RTS. Its a cross between Dotage and Thronefall. Seems to have lots of content, and is surprisingly polished.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute and fun. The different leaders and areas provide just enough variety to keep it interesting. I'd say it's priced about right but just on the high end of what most games like this would cost... if it's on sale I'd definitely snag it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun concept but need more effort on level design
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When the only major complaint is not enough content, I usually think of that as a good thing. Game's not even done yet at time of my review
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a comfort game for me (not on the higher difficulties). The mix of RTS, card mechanics, base building works really well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could have been good, but it is way too reliant on RNG even for a roguelike. On hard and higher difficulty, food upkeep cost is raised by an absolutely massive 50%, which is even worse than it sounds because that includes the upkeep for food-producing buildings and the population you need to work them. You either get an orchard through the luck of the draw or you lose because you can't build anything after a couple of turns.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty fun. It has a fair amount of jank and could be considered incomplete or version 0.90. in theory i get mad when games have card elements and deck building. Here it didn't even register until the game was already marked in my brain as a thumbs up. Normal is way to easy and the only way to really play to have any challenge is on Pioneer. There are enough funny looking character and different characters to choose to spend 10 plus hours playing and not even realize it like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a simple okay game, enough to waste a day or two with the price but, This game lack any type of consequences, even when playing on the highest difficulty. When you starve it doesn't matter, when your troop dies it doesn't matter , when you building get destroyed it doesn't matter, everything resets any ways to full health and active. The devs should probably add a hardcore mode or for your new game work on that. All in all, its a very easy game. get it on sale or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a genuinely made game from the people behind Yogscast. There's elements of professional game development here attached to a bewilderingly awful visual presentation that comes across slightly worse than Russian asset flips... yes, it's pixelcrap. And because the developers couldn't do video game visuals properly, all the work they put into the back end and game design was completely wasted. Developers should ask "What does NVidia make?" before they shove pixelcrap onto Steam. It's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nice game for the bundle I got it in and the price. It also has a nice balance of building your towns eco vs knowing when you need more defense. This is also one of the only games I can leave running for 15 hours and not have it break on me over time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks simple at first but has a lot going for it and is very addictive and fun. Many options and strategies to complete levels and the ability to continue after finishing a main objective along with unlockable starting modifiers gives it re-playability. Well worth a look if you are interested in a defense oriented game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Border Pioneer, developed by Yahzj Games and published by Yogscast Games and Gamersky Games, is a uniquely engaging strategy title that combines city-building, tower defense, and deck-building mechanics into a cohesive and challenging experience. Released in early 2025, the game places players in the role of a newly appointed viceroy tasked with establishing and protecting frontier settlements from hostile forces. Its inventive blend of gameplay systems, paired with a charming pixel art…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Generally fun game, Wish I was good enough to build a cool looking city but I have bad RNG.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was a bullseye for me. Scrambling through endless lists searching for a game that would give me that dopamine hit to attempt new strategies, rather than the straight forward strategies. Initially pulled me in because, I like card games, rogue-likes, and TD. What I didn't know was how well put together the game was going to be. Came in and started at the normal difficulty and quickly realized that the game was going to be more of a breeze I swapped difficulties to Pioneer. This was…
