Broforce
Developer Free Lives
Broforce is a 2015 side-scrolling run and gun game developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital. The game has the player as one of several "bros", based on popular culture action movie icons (for example, John Rambo and Ellen Ripley – "bro" treated as a gender neutral term), rescuing other "bros" through highly destructible environments. Development began in April 2012 as a game jam entry and continued… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 204 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (59,201 of 61,085 positive).
Players praise Broforce for its chaotic, over-the-top action and humor. [1][2][3] Many enjoy the game's references to 80s and 90s action movies. [4][3][5] Some find the game frustrating due to environmental hazards and difficulty spikes. [6][7][8]

Tried some early levels with a friend long ago. Looked like very lighthearted, full of humor, jolly slaughter. It made me think of Metal Slug but different. After that brief session I bought it for myself and finally got around to play it. But turned out that earlier image of the game I had wasn't there to stay. Till the very end the game drastically shifts its formula towards more of a precision platformer full of …

BROFORCE is what happens when someone watches every 80s and 90s action movie in a single weekend and then makes a video game about it while still running on adrenaline and Mountain Dew. I played this forever ago and I'm still thinking about it. Not because of some deep narrative or artistic vision. Because I unlocked a parody of Chuck Norris and roundhouse-kicked a helicopter. Because I found a Rambo knockoff and …

Broforce is easily one of the greatest pixel shooters ever made. The characters are absurdly badass, every level is pure chaotic spectacle and the fully destructible environments turn every fight into an over the top action movie scene. You can flex, blow stuff up in the most exaggerated way possible and literally fight the Devil himself and somehow it never stops being fun. Absolute cinema in 2D form.
- [6]
I very cautiously recommend Broforce. While Broforce it can be pretty fun at times, the sheer amount of environmental hazards can make for such ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and frustrating deaths. Sometimes the random deaths are funny but others times they are very frustrating.

i started this game with a micro penis and now the erection is lasting about 10 years and i couldn't be more proud.
Summarised from 34 of the 332 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
94% of the 204 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Broforce. The complaint that keeps coming up: frustrating random deaths from chaos. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Eurogamer's Jeffrey Matulef described the game demo as an "instantly addictive throwback to retrogaming" and noted the uniqueness of its destructible environment. Several reporters compared the game to Terraria. IGN awarded it a score of 8.8 out of 10, saying "Beneath Broforce's bad puns and bulging biceps lies a brilliant ode to action cinema and retro gaming." The Escapist awarded it four and a half stars out of five, saying "Broforce is a silly, but sincere love letter to iconic action movies, refined to perfection with rich environments and wonderfully-crafted enemies."

Linux native builds are so buggy and glitchy and never work right. Always some combination of: - No sound - Old outdated version missing content and incompatible online - Controllers don't work - Crashes, doesn't launch at all - Horrific FPS - Cutscenes don't play - Weird game breaking softlocks and logic errors, like critical items not spawning and dialogue not triggering -…

The game left a lasting impression on me, and I always wanted to come back "because it made me laugh". I played it then in multiplayer, the ideal way to play the game. I didn't fully know what I was getting myself into when I decided to finish Broforce, but It ended up being the hardest game I have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun, especially with a friend, concept is pretty simple, it's cool to see refrences of movie/game characters, the destruction of the enviroment the unique weapons of said characters is very fun, but for me the fun kinda stopped when the alien enemies get introduced later on in the game, aliens are awesome, but god is it a pain in the ass to deal with them. All in All 7.5/10

neutral · AI labelView post →Over a decade from its release, Broforce remains an interesting artifact of gaming circa 2015, while also remaining a mostly decent though fairly frustrating ridiculous action movie trope mega-menagerie. In terms of gameplay, Broforce is a mash-up between side-scrolling shooters, with a lo-fi Super Meat Boy aesthetic blended with hyper-destructable levels that are almost always in the middle of actively being destroyed. The near constant flow of explosions both purposefully made and…

Highly reccomend trying it, you won't regret it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't figured out a title yet (but it'll definitely have "bro" in it), but I started on a game based on the Maid RPG rules where you play as over the top macho hero guys. Think Kung Fury, Broforce, and a little JoJo.
neutral · AI labelView post →This game is if Team America World Police was a platformer. After killing literally hundreds of terrorist suicide bombers, suddenly one appears, and there is a whole flashback for his life as he explodes. all the way from a little baby terrorist, playing youth terrorist soccer, getting into his terrorist military school, then finally exploding. excellent game. just excellent fun.

Random is sometimes so random Sometimes there are too many objects on the screen and it's sometimes impossible to keep track of what might kill you. 8/10 Funny shooter I recommend to everyone! It is not clear why the developers did not make dls, since this requires a minimum amount of effort.

I'm not sure whether I entirely sign on with that, but when a game feels fun to control it's just as likely to hook me as an immersive atmosphere. Broforce has none of the latter (it's a 2D side scrolling shooter with less story than the original Doom) but tons of the former; it's ridiculously fun to just pick up and play. I even found myself…

It's a really weird mesh of patriotic satire, sarcastic machismo, callbacks going as far as the 70's, and really good indie game mechanics. It all blends together in a really fun end result. The many characters aren't just different skins (mostly); each model has their own primary and special abilities, and offer plenty of re-play value. Maybe it would have been nice to see more dialogue or worldbuilding; but that's like going to a steakhouse…
