Broken Age
Developer Double Fine Productions
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure video game developed and published by Double Fine. Broken Age was game director Tim Schafer's first return to the genre since 1998's Grim Fandango, and was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One platforms. The game was developed in two acts; the first was released on January 28, 2014 (two weeks earlier for… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,894 of 8,238 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful art, music, and voice acting. [1][2][3] Many find the first act strong but the second act weaker and frustrating. [4][5][6] Some reviewers were disappointed by the story and puzzles in the second half. [7][8][9]

I'm really sad & do regret buying the game. I was looking forward when this game came out. The story is disappointing, Act 2 especially. It was unsatisfying/ felt incomplete and the puzzle killed playability with long unnecessarily repeating backtracking, lack of cues/ some of the puzzles were unclear on what do next or event tigered. Walkthrough kinda helped, but I don't want a game that makes me looks it up so …

Beneath its witty, beautiful storybook charm lies a surprisingly classic point-and-click adventure. This is exactly what makes old-school adventure games so special.

Let’s get the negatives, shall we? - The second half of the game is noticeably weaker than the first. Act 1 flows naturally with intuitive puzzles and strong pacing, but Act 2 suddenly becomes far more convoluted and occasionally frustrating. One particular puzzle took me way too long than necessary. - The pacing can drag whenever you get stuck. Since the game relies heavily on puzzle progression, one frustrating …

Broken Age is an absolute gem in the 2D, point-and-click adventure genre. The first thing that struck me was how stunning the game looks—the art is gorgeous, colorful, and full of charm. The music and sound effects are perfectly balanced, enhancing the mood without ever becoming annoying or overbearing. On top of that, the voice acting is some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a game of this type. The puzzles hit …

I have very mixed feelings about this game, which was nostalgic for me when I first got it. I had played it on my sister's account years ago and with my own account it was the first game I wishlisted YEARS ago before I got it as a gift. I had never finished the game beyond the first act (them changing places), and tbh I kinda wished it had stayed that way???? I really do wish there was a Meh or inbetween for this? …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The game's first act was well received by critics, scoring 82/100 on review aggregation website Metacritic. Adam Sessler of Rev3Games gave Broken Age Act 1 a 4/5 calling it a beautiful game with wonderful and funny writing. Justin McElroy, writing at Polygon highlighted the game's characters as "grounded while approaching absurdity and adversity with brave, heartfelt sincerity" giving the game a "kind of depth that's so often lacking in other 'funny' games". Within a month of the first act's release, Schafer confirmed that its sales would be sufficient to cover the remaining development costs for Act 2. Act 2, released more than a year later, received a similar response overall, with a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visually nothing else like it. Entirely hand painted. Fully orchestrated score. Presentation is unique and of the highest quality. The visuals top out at 1440p but scaling to 4K shouldn't be bad. Another casualty of Kickstarter. Backers were encouraged to submit ideas for levels, characters, and activities. The result is a game without consistency or flow. Sometimes you're in a forest with a hipster lumberjack; in another, a seaside with a mayor. The small scope of the game and these bite…

This game is so nostalgic and beautiful. Its polished, aesthetic, clever, and doesn't require a million hours to perfect. I recommend everyone play!! :))

neutral · AI labelView post →I was one of the backers of this game on KickStarter and was very disappointed with the end result. Yet another artsy game with very little substance. None of the elements that make classic point-and-click adventures so interesting (setting, characters, writing, puzzles) are particularly good here. In fact, the story is very crude and the characters are rather primitive. Neither does this game have any innovations that go beyond the basics of the genre.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked this game up after suddenly remembering StampyLongHead/StampyLongNose playing it foreverrrrr ago. It's still a beautiful point n click adventure game with a fun story. Some of the puzzles can be confusing but I overall think it's worth a playthrough!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reading this made me genuinely emotional. @doublefine.com & its games have a special place in my heart. I played Psychonauts when I was 12, met Tim Schafer & backed Broken Age in college, got to visit the studio in 2023 during GDC & still play every game they make. So happy they're still here. ❤️

I love this game so much i wish the developers will consider making a sequel one day; especially showing more interactions between Shay and Vella. I feel like there's a lot to work with to make that happen, like knowing more about the boss and what happened to him and Levine(?) and what they might still be up to, but this time Shay and Vella working…

neutral · AI labelView post →Really really really wanted to like this one. It starts off really good and continues being good until the very end. Act 3 is really short and the story feels unfinished. The overall conflict is resolved off screen, the ending feels like the start of a final act but then the game just ends. I was really disappointed because the first two acts are just so good. Sad they dropped the ball :(

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is bad, very bad. I always try to see the positives in the games i play, but this one, it barely has any. The only save grace is the art-style, which is nice at times, only at times. The soundtrack is nothing more than forgettable background noise, even when it should be impactant. There are two main characters, one is a bored, snarky, naive and curious young man, while the other is a brave, also curious and hotheaded young woman. That's all they are and they don't go too far as…

Towards late game very clear signs of padding of the game time with a lot of extra steps needed to proceed so i just shelved this one. All in all a mixed bag for me. Lot of good too as can be expected of this wonderful dev but not everything is gold.

positive · AI labelView post →If you're really big on point and click puzzle games, this might still be something you want to check out, but I found a lot of puzzles in the second half of the game completely obtuse. It left me frustrated and not wanting to play more.

negative · AI labelView post →I don't even know how I remembered this game, but I downloaded it anyways. I love the story and mechanic of the game, playing two people in the same timeline is something I need to see a lot more often because it gives different perspective of characters who wants one thing which is breaking off tradition and embracing change for something better, thus naming the game Broken Age. And the worldbuilding of this game is something to admire for, like people from Sugar Bunting, Meriloft, Shellmound,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Swing-and-Miss (for me) Tim Schafer's games from his time at LucasArts are some of my favorite games of all time. Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango are all amazing games I love to play and replay to this day. However, every game he has made since has just been a swing-and-miss for me. This was true for the highly acclaimed Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, and unfortunately, it's true with this game. The Story & World As a Quest/Adventure game, I feel it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a good game. Starts off a bit boring and slow, but it gets more interesting. However, the ending is full of horrible puzzles and it completely stops any fun you'd have with the game, not being able to process the story without searching up guides because the puzzles simply do not make any sense and will straight up reset progress on you. That's annoying.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You ever scroll back through your older games to find a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ one that you can never, ever refund because you got it so long ago when you were stupid? Yeah. This is that game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tim Schafer’s creativity is undeniable, but this game feels like a magic trick where the setup is great and the payoff is a shrug. The humor’s inconsistent, the pacing’s off, and the puzzle logic makes the game 'myst' look merciful especially after the tenth time you combine random items out of desperation. You’ll stare at the screen wondering if you’re missing something, spoiler, you’re not, the game is. It’s too pretty to hate outright but way too annoying and hollow to love. In the end, it’s…

neutral · AI labelView post →I have a hard time finishing videogames. Which is wild in a family of gamers. Not only have I finished this, I have replayed it a few times now both on steam and on my switch. It's not a cozy game in the cozy game sense, but it's cozy to me in the way a good familiar story is. It's fun, the voice acting is great, and the animation is absolutely my style. Definitely recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While this game was fun and quaint, I unfortunately can not recommend it due to Double Fine being part of Xbox Game Studios Mircosoft (the owners of Xbox) is currently giving aid and technology to murder Palestinians and apartheid Because of that, I can not recommend buying this game or anything other Double Fine game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will be hesitant if they do crowdfunding for their next game. Broken Age ran out of KickStarter funds and Psychonauts 2 needed Microsoft money to be completed.
negative · AI labelView post →Like watching a generic Disney cartoon except you're in charge of making the protagonist move. Probably a great time if you like that sort of thing. I don't like that sort of thing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game... Isn't good. The puzzles are annoying and/or obtuse. A lot of which are just navigating dialog trees in the exact correct way. The story starts out strong, but it just kind of ends with a lot things not being expanded upon. It almost seems like this was a game written for children, as in really little children. Various degrees of plot holes litter the whole story, but the ending is especially bad. During this ending, key events are brought up for mere moments and never expanded…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Broken Age, developed and published by Double Fine Productions under the direction of Tim Schafer, is a modern reimagining of the classic point-and-click adventure genre that helped define PC gaming’s golden age. The game was famously one of Kickstarter’s earliest success stories, sparking enormous enthusiasm for the revival of narrative-driven adventures when it was announced. Released in two acts between 2014 and 2015, Broken Age sought to blend the nostalgic charm of the old LucasArts…

positive · AI labelView post →Better late than never, I suppose. I started Broken Age, which I backed on Kickstarter forever ago. The game is gorgeous.
positive · AI labelView post →Horrible quirk chungus writing, having most of the puzzles being across multiple screens with tons of backtracking with insane logic. The "electrical wire puzzles" actually take into account the "orientation" of the wires which is absolutly insane.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the best games i've played, the story ended up being so much more than i expected, the art is absolutely gorgeous, and the puzzles get really challenging. I HIGHLY recommend this game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Broken Age is one of my all time favorite point and click adventure games. Brutal Legend I have a lot of mixed feelings are (RTS segments and the late game are rough), but it has so much charm pumped into it that I think it's at least worth playing around in for the history.
positive · AI labelView post →A Game of Two Halves I really enjoyed Act 1 of Broken Age. The story, art style, characters and user interface all worked really well, and the puzzles were simple enough to keep the adventure moving without interrupting the flow of the game. It captured that classic point-and-click feeling with a modern presentation. Unfortunately, Act 2 is where the game loses its way. The puzzles become increasingly nonsensical, with some feeling more like trial-and-error exercises than logical challenges.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For a Tim Schafer point-and-click adventure, this is just... fine. When you think of what defines Double Fine, Psychonauts comes to mind first and foremost, with its brilliant eccentricity and depth, followed to a lesser extent by the whimsical spirit of Broken Age. Tim Schafer's trademark flamboyant, effortlessly charming humor is there, but both the narrative structure and gameplay grow increasingly flimsy. It begins as a delightful experience, carried by its lovely visuals and sense of the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Frustrating. I love the schaferverse. I like this game's art, characters, voice acting, story. The adventure game puzzles are frustrating and not fun to me. Some of them are somewhat intuitive. Many are not. I quickly get bored trying to hit a target i cant even see, and so i look up the solution. Sometimes even when you know what to do, it's not fun to do it. I'd rather watch someone play through it so you get all the fun and none of the frustration. Unfortunately i cant recommend.
