What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 160 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (53,690 of 65,019 positive).
Many note the game is now effectively dead with low population and official servers shut down. [1][2][3] Some recommend the sequel instead due to the original's lack of support. [1][4][5]

Dead game still at full price. Shameless. For those who didn't bother reading the about section (can't blame them): AS OF APRIL 8, 2024, OFFICIAL SERVERS FOR CHIVALRY: MEDIEVAL WARFARE WILL BE SHUT DOWN. Unofficial / private servers can be created by community members and may be available for public players to use. Offline play with AI is also available. That's all you need to know.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (2012) The game itself is great and a lot of fun to play, but you cannot get the achievements in offline mode. You can get Chivalry 2's achievements in offline mode, so why not this one as well? They ended online servers for this game but you can still play on private servers and such, and even then I won't bother because if you don't live in the EU and you have high ping, people kick you …

This game was incredible back in the day, spending almost 300 hours on this game, but this game is officially dead, do not buy it as you will have no one to play with, buy chiv 2 instead. Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. -Dr. Seuss

What a classic. The sequel just didn't hit the same. The tone, atmosphere and art direction of this one was way better (the voice lines were truly hilarious). The skill curve was punishing too, you had to time your parries. This made it more rewarding. Its a pity the servers got taken offline. Glad I got to play this one back in the day. If they ever remaster this I'd be there for it.

I reckon that OG Chiv is slightly better than its sequel, Chiv 2. A bit less arcadey, a bit more janky but with a higher skill ceiling, and an absolutely hilarious community (with surprisingly little toxicity). The Pythonesque voice commands are brilliant and bring joy. It's the best mouse-based melee combat game I've ever played, and it's the best time I've ever had with a multiplayer game. Unfortunately it's dead …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received generally favorable reviews with a Metacritic score of 79/100 based on 24 different critics. IGN gave it a 7.9/10, praising its medieval style ultra-violent multiplayer gameplay, but also mentioned that the game had a limited number of classes. AusGamers gave the game a 90/100 noting that the game's only downfalls were the lack of different environments and a few bugs. PC Gamer rated the game 81/100 noting "Chivalry is Quake to War of the Roses' Battlefield, and those seeking a faster-paced bloodier experience will undoubtedly prefer Chivalry's type of steel." In August 2013 it was announced that the game has sold 1.2 million copies. As of October 2014, the game has sold 2…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, but new comers beware. The population on this game is severely low. All that's left are the pros. This is a great game, but it's not for newbies. It's better to find something newer. A game with a heavier population so there will be more people around that skill level. There's only frustration here with this game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We have another purple swordsperson for today's Sunday Best, my custom Knight tabard from Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. I played Vanguard on teams, but when I wanted to play free-for-all I ran the Knight. This game had incredible taunts, all goofy, period-appropriate cusses. "YOU are a MAN. of. WAX!"
positive · AI labelView post →Very fun FPS multiplayer sword play at start, but after some time I started to notice that, in most servers, there're players that seem to take advantage of some movement glitch or are just using cheats, making them almost impossible to kill. This took all the fun of the game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve put more hours into this game than I probably should admit, and even now, it’s one of those games I look back on with nothing but good memories. Yeah, people call it a “dead game” now… but honestly, Chivalry isn’t dead — it’s just on a very long respawn timer. I mostly played archer (don’t hate me ). And if you were around back then, you already know how that went. Landing clean long-range shots, picking people off mid-fight, or getting into those random archer vs archer duels across the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game. Not even a single server with single oponent on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you have an "attack" action? No, but you can Demonstrate Chivalry. You can fill yourself with longing. You can be so loathsome you inspire shame and revulsion in others. It really requires you to buy very deeply into the vibes but it's such a neat little game of vampire knights.

Fantastic combat game with a lot of gore. It will take some time to get use to the combat gameplay but once you learn, you will have ball of a time. I would also wait until it goes on sale due to it being an older game. Definitely one of my personal favorites.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played Chivalry: medieval Warfare since 2014. Something that is funny about that is that I actually purchased the game on Steam a couple years earlier. I wish I had really started playing and gotten into the game when I first purchased it, because I felt stupid when I finally jumped in and starting having the most fun I've probably every had in a POV fighting game. My fascination with this game started when I first saw that it was a fighting game that put you behind the eyes of a warrior…
