What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 108 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (157 of 195 positive).
Players praise the collection for preserving three classic Game Boy RPGs with some modern conveniences. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the games are archaic and lack explanations, which may deter modern players. [4][5][6] Some players criticize the port as lazy, citing missing features like save states and screen tearing. [7][8][9]

How do you mess up a Game Boy emulator in the modern age? Awful screen tearing, emulation artifacting, no save controls, no GBC/SGB palette support, and all wrapped in a Unity-based emulator. And yes, these are Game Boy ROMs packed as Unity assets. This was not redeveloped in Unity like the Pixel Remasters, it's just a corporate emulator. If you're going to buy this, do yourself a favor. Buy this, go to …

Hello friends, Today i will review the game Collection of Saga Final Fantasy Legends. This collection contains three games from the gameboy era. They have same graphics as back then, but somewhat cleaned up for pc. They also have re-translated and changed some translation mistakes and changes for the modern age. Although not a perfect port of the games, it is still a pretty good port. Anyways, below is my pro/con …

These games are quite old and archaic. If you're not a fan of old-school JRPGs, then this collection is not for you. However, if you are like me and enjoy grinding and challenging turn-based combat, then these games are really fun! With the 1st game, the very beginning is unforgiving. Expect to grind for 20-60 minutes or so before setting out on the journey. After that, I didn't have to grind much at all. I own the …

This is kind of a soft recommendation here. I would really only recommend it to retrogamers and nostalgia buyers. Judging them as games in their own right in the modern day.... they really aren't that good. However, I will always applaud publishers and developers for keeping their games alive on modern platforms and not letting their legacy rot on 30 years dead hardware platforms. All of these games are a bit …

COLLECTION of SaGa FINAL FANTASY LEGEND is a fascinating preservation of three early handheld role-playing games that helped establish the foundations of the SaGa series. The package contains The Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend II, and Final Fantasy Legend III, presenting them largely in their original Game Boy form while introducing several conveniences for modern players. Developed by Square Enix and …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The wonderswan version of SaGa 1 should have been included, and the DS versions of SaGa 2 and 3 should have been included.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never played these until now. Working my way through I currently. Having a blast though. Definitely different than a modern JRPG, but still very fun. Makes you think since weapons aren't infinite use. I'd say the only negative is nothing is explained, but that's just the era this game is from. It's not too hard to figure out as you play though by any means. Definitely a solid collection if the other 2 games are anything like the first so far!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Usually a gnashing of teeth meets the release of a collection like this. "Why," the moral gymnast asks, "should I pay for these games, when I can steal them instead?" Ethical navel-gazing is outside the scope of this review, but I'll be clear on this point. As an English speaker, there are two reasonable and legal ways to own and play these games: buying the original Nintendo Game Boy cartridges with their attending hardware accoutrements, or buying this collection. You don't have to be an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is needlessly censored and has an irritating splash screen telling me so when I start it up (this alone makes this game not worth it) and virtually no features have been added. It's just a cheap emulation. Disappointing to say the least. I still have my physical copies--and translation patches for the DS remakes--and will stick to those.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SaGa 1 : Sawing God in half never gets old, even 30 years later SaGa 2 : My favorite game of all time. Even today, it stills holds up really well. Great story(ies), great romance(s), great characters (including Indiana Jones!), great gameplay, really interesting mechanics, and delicious retro wonkiness SaGa 3 : Easily my least favorite of the three (prolly due to it having a completely different team, while the other guys were working on Romancing SaGa), it's still a great game since it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original SaGa trilogy of games are classics that aged like fine wine and are most definitely worth playing even today. However I can't with a clear conscience recommend this port as it is quite frankly quite lazy. Sure the games play well but the complete absence of any options in this package that even most rudimentary of emulators contain is just baffling. There are no savestates, no rewinds, no filters, no scalers, no scanlines, no super gameboy pallettes so you are forced to play on a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I use to play these on the Gameboy, god I am so old, it the hand held system that your Mommy and Daddy use to play. Anyway they still fun and can be a real challenge, check it out, it so retro.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game since it brings back memories and if you compare the price of all 3 back in those day and now, this is definitely cheaper. Only get this is you were a fan of this game. Reason why I wouldn't recommend this game is that it is simply a port over, no improvements whatsoever. Pre-ordering this gets some wallpaper but we don't get everything that is in the promo video like the coloured versions of the bosses etc. My controller didn't work with this Would be good if they had…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tearing in the emulation makes this a complete waste vs. just emulating it yourself. Achievements are also barely there - "start the game" then "complete the game" for all three, that's basically it. Go use RetroAchievements instead. Don't bother with this.

At that age, I was just BARELY getting into and learning how RPGs worked, but this title threw me for a loop with the systems in place. Experience Points? Nope! Those don't exist here! Your…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sure you make this into an actual collection but not the I-VI RM what the crap Square? It fun it doesn't hold your hand. no maps and limited on weapon usage.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The power of preferred ways to play games is crazy strong I bought Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend on Switch the day it launched and got halfway through all of them before deciding to stop but the moment I get an Analog Pocket I'm blitzing through Final Fantasy Legend like crazy
positive · AI labelView post →These games haven't been particularly easy to come by since their original release in 1989 for Gameboy, and this is a very good, very high quality re-release with some updated features to improve each games flow and over all progression. The games run on a turn based system, Similar to Final Fantasy 2. This is a fantastic trilogy for any final fantasy game fan and collector, and has many improvements and streamline features to make the game more enjoyable to a modern audience looking to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OK, I'll be honest; this review is heavily biased by my own nostalgia, since Final Fantasy Legend (aka SaGa) was the first video game I ever owned, along with Mario Land and Tetris on the good ol' gameboy. I was barely old enough to even read and understand what was going on in the game, but just the idea of going on an adventure had me exploring for hours, traveling to every nook and cranny of the overworld, buying all the items, talking to everyone, etc. By the time I actually figured out how…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ahh. Now these games are absolute classics!! As an RPG fan that grew up in a house with one TV and if it was being used by my dad, there was no way I'd be getting to play a video game on it that night... these games were pillars of my growing up. I had this entire set as carts. Even all the way up to the Gameboy Color, Final Fantasy Legend II was my favorite game for it. Comfort game today? Yes indeedy! For years if I could emulate on a device, the first game I would always try out was…

neutral · AI labelView post →The first blight on the Final Fantasy brand This collection contains all the inconvenience of retro JRPGs, but without any of the charm...or soul. Here are some of my gripes in no particular order: The auto-scrolling text makes the dialogue feel unnaturally paced and it's easy to accidentally skip important information permanently. You have limited control over the scroll speed, but it doesn't matter because static text boxes that you could always review by re-initiating conversations…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well after 50+ hours I finally managed to 100% this game, I completed all 3 games. Before I get into the review of the core games, I'll give you a rundown on what this collection actually is: it's basically emulated version of original GB games. There's English and Japanese version (It claims it changed some things to make it less offensive but from what I found out, they only changed "colored stairs" instead of "black stairs" in one of the dialogues). You can play with both controller and a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a hard review for me. First thing, do not look a the time played. I have played Legend 1 and Legend 2 and beaten them many times. Using pretty much every party possible, including the ones the manual says to never use. Legend 3 I have only played through once, but enjoyed it. The games are great RPGs and deserve to be played. They were my most played Gameboy games. This is the problem, as these are the exact Gameboy games. There are better versions of each of these games that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dont buy for steam deck ⛔ I have fond memories of playing FFL3 on my gameboy pocket in the back of the school bus when I was in 6th grade. The FF world was so vast and big back then, despite the tiny screen of the gameboy. I was very excited to try this remastered port for my steam deck. But the steam deck already has emulator support and I was able to compare this remastered port vs the gameboy rom. ✅ The gameboy emulator gives over 100+ color variations to try. Just like when you plug in a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent collection of some Game Boy classics! I never played these ones back in the day but I've always been a fan of the old school jrpgs despite their often grindy and cryptic nature. Playing these today for the first time and felt that they still hold up for classic rpg lovers. The games really did some unique things for the time period, from 4th wall breaking futuristic stories to intricate class systems I haven't really seen before even today in 2023! As far as I know these are almost…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great package of games.. the three original SaGa games in all their glory. My only problem with this pack is it don't use the Wonderswan version of FFL 1.. which is a massive shame 'cos that version is far superior in EVERY way. They could have at least packaged it with the three here already.. to make it 4 games.. SE missed a great opportunity there.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A simple thumbs up or down doesn't really capture this one. If you played the heck out of these games in the early 90s on many car rides and want that nostalgia, then it's a thumbs up, although maybe only to own the ROMs legally. This emulation isn't the best; one hand, you can speed what what is a terribly slow game by modern standards, but on the other hand save states only work as quicksaves when you exit the game (so you have to copy the saves manually if you want to keep them at key…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please keep in mind I review this one with a bias. I grew up with Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 on the Gameboy so a lot of my enjoyment comes from nostalgia. The games aren't "hard" per se, but they don't explain much at all. Most of your knowledge will come from learning the game yourself. Heck, sometimes they don't tell you what gear even improves your character. It's just good old fashioned, Save - Try Something - Load type of information. There aren't a ton of guides online for these as they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has weapon durability and later on weapons cost 32K, you spend time grinding the money and your weapons break during that time, also the game doesn't have XP/leveling system to get stronger, 0/5 this is pure caca.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you enjoy random battles? How about random battles literally every single step? That happens sometimes int his game. And no I don't mean there is a dungeon that happens in, I mean sometimes you will just walk out of town and immediately get into a battle, get into another battle in another step, and then a 3rd battle on your single step back into town to heal. No joke. Also, RNG doesn't seem to be a thing in the game? I saved the game in an area and when I reload it, after 5 steps I always…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →cool piece of gaming history. These games are not very fun though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic gameboy rpgs. WHERE'S THE REST OF YOUR CLASSIC CATALOG SQUARE?!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GET IT ON SALE! It's actually fun, reminds me of trying to find double AA batteries to play on the original gameboy which I still have. Wasn't even mine, it twas my brothers. Hence, as we all know big brother stuff becomes little brother stuff and here we are. Keeps my mind busy honestly and worth a play through on sale. Plus super satisfying when you vanquish some bosses in minibit form :p
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a series that kicks off with you getting 'roided and killing God with a chainsaw for cursing you with these RPG mechanics. But then God unleashed CensorBot 0.1 to chainsaw the game itself, making it slightly more offensive I guess? Who replaces "colored stairs" with "pigmented stairs" or "N bomb" with "A bomb"? AND DOESN'T INCLUDE THE MANUALS OR ANY KIND OF EXPLANATION FOR THESE DAMNED MECHANICS? Square Enix, you are a strange god indeed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →These are classic games from my, and many others, childhood. The Final Fantasy Legend offers a unique experience for those looking for something a little different. Multiple character classes and character options really elevate what could have been a standard RPG experience to something special. Final Fantasy Legend II improves upon the first game by offering a better story and more concrete way to advance characters. Final Fantasy Legend III offers an even more cohesive story and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those wondering this includes all the mainline numbered titles, as well as one-offs like Type-0, Stranger of Paradise, World of FF, Ever Crisis, and Dissidia NT. I even included Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend even though those are technically SaGa titles.
neutral · AI labelView post →The Final Fantasy Legend Collection was something I had the privilege of experiencing in part as a child on the Gameboy. It was never something I fully understood until I have gotten older, and still has some things I can't quite understand (I actually don't think they are meant to understand). In an attempt to play through as many classic style JRPGs as a way to wind down I jumped at this as an introduction to the mechanics of the SaGa games, after not being able to get Final Fantasy II…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nostalgic classics. Maybe not for everyone, but personally I love them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 as a kid on the original GameBoy. I remember being addicted to these grinding, punishing JRPGs. I loved them and I look forward to playing through them and trying 3 for the first time. So far, Final Fantasy Legend 1 seems basically true to the original game and I love it! Would recommend to anyone that played original and wants to play again, or to new players willing to accept the dated graphics and gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very solid classics JRPGs from the early days, no color, no hand holding, If you are fans of old JRPGs, don't have a Gameboy and the games on hand I would greatly recommend giving this collection a try. A pretty unique combination of multiple concept rarely seen together in the same game. Swords, Magic, Technology and Monster all mixed together remind me of Phantasy Star. Each game are 10-15 hours or so depending on how well you handle the mechanics. Final Fantasy Legend: Very rough game, you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic port of some classic JRPGS! Highly recommend looking at the differences between the GB ports and Wonderswan versions so you can make an informed decision on which to playthrough!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sure id recommend it if youre trying to beat every Final Fantasy game. Did I have fun? It was alright. I beat Final Fantasy II previous to this and enjoyed it alot more. Onto the second game. Reminds me of the Phantasy Star Online games for gameboy which I beat two decades ago or so. That turned into something great on Gamecube. I am rambling. My god I am getting old :(
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thank you so much for this nostalgic trip to the past... I had Final Fantasy Legends 2 when I was 16 and I was playing it on my OG game boy. No fancy graphics, no hand holding, beautiful but brutal game in terms of difficulty if you are a newcomer and I loved it. So many side quests and adventures in Final Fantasy Legends 2... You become a detective for a bit, you visit a haunted place... I wish sometimes games would go back being simple and fun like they used to, instead being a huge buggy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best Rpg's crafted by human hands. The Collection is lackluster and is basically a glorified emulator, but if you have no other options i'd play it here. Ranking the games from Best To Worst: Final Fantasy Saga 3: Probably the most traditional out of the games. It feels more like your typical RPG than the rest. Also it gives me massive Chrono Trigger vibes (Despite coming out before Chrono Trigger). One of the best RPGs you can play, 9/10. Fyi, this game abandons the weapon…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →These games didn't hold up well over the years. Resolution options are limited and weird. It would have been nice to have a proper remaster instead of what seems like a straight up port of 30 year old gameboy games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty obvious that these games are supposed to come with instruction manuals, I wish they were included in some form. Aside from that, this is a really good port!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SaGA is a series I never really got into. I remember having both Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 for the Original Gameboy but I lost those games somewhere along the way. I picked this up for a stroll down nostalgia lane and it was fun to play and see the a branching path for Final Fantasy. I'm currently on a FF Kick ahead of Xmas where I intend to start Tactics Remake, so i'm clearing my backlog on steam!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This port is an absolute embarrassment. Square needs to never go through Racjin again. Between the constant issues with saves not saving, screen tearing, and the literal ass of random encounters. For example, in the cloud map with the chests, the "random" encounters are in the same order for the same number of steps each time I would reload the save. That's pathetic, at least try to design a functional rng..... Just get a legal rom and emulator and avoid this mess of a port.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do have a bit of a soft spot for old games, so this was right up my alley. I missed these games growing up, and I got to play them now! I would highly recommend following a walkthrough though, mainly for getting yourself unstuck, and guides on what the items do. But yeah, this is some great JRPG old-school goodness, and is honestly one of the more unique RPGs available even though they are so old. I'd recommend playing all 3 games in the collection too, they all have their pros and cons.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great collection of games with a good QoL speed up feature that doubles movement and actions but keeps the music playing at regular speed, serious when i say i never turned it off when playing. That said, I really only got this to play Legend III because i wanted to try the other game that the devs of FF Mystic Quest made and you do see a lot of that game in this. From some of the monster sprites, to the jumping+puzzles using it (which sadly isn't utilised as much as id like so you forget it's…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fine, Square Enix, fine. Fine. I bought these Game Boy games, in 2024, on Steam. I'll probably even play them one day. But now that we're releasing two major SaGa games per year, can we get the WonderSwan/DS remakes of these three games, in 2025, on Steam? Along with SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered? I guess now that I've bought this collection, I won't feel so bad playing the remake versions on my PC until an official release comes to Steam. Also, no, I won't pay $60 for a 2D-HD remake of each…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Straight port of the Gameboy versions with unnoticeable alterations and a speedup mode. This is a game where you have to figure it out verses it telling you how it all works nor rely on typical JRPG norms to get you through. Each game also is different with how it handles the battle systems even though they're similar. They do require some grind but after recently playing through FF 1-7 I personally didn't have much of an issue with it and its a lot shorter grind time than many of those.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Three very cool and innovative RPGs from the Game Boy. This collection is well presented and it works perfectly. If you are into retro Japanese role playing games or want to discover the beginning of the SaGa series this is a great choice.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Three amazing RPGs from the Game Boy library. They are not without flaw or quirks, but they are very rewarding to those willing to give them some time. Also if you liked Mystic Quest, play Final Fantasy Legend 3. You're welcome.
