What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 191 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (593 of 649 positive).
Players praise the remaster for its beautiful updated sprites and quality-of-life improvements. [1][2][3] Many note the game is cryptic and difficult, often requiring a guide or patience. [4][5][6] Some reviewers warn it may not appeal to newcomers due to its obscure mechanics and uneven difficulty. [7][8][9]

I love this game. I will put a lot of hours into this game. I would be willing to let a friend try my copy of the game and see if they like it. I would not recommend anyone buying this game without knowing exactly what they're getting themselves into. It is a turn based jRPG with interesting ideas, mechanics, and an early effort at open-world game design. It has a charming asthetic and I'm very fond of many of the …

This may be the best of the remasters on Square's list. Why? 1) It's still relatively true to the original localisation except the skill names, RIP to those. Also dialogue has been sanitised a bit, but that's a minor thing. 2) The new sprites are absolutely gorgeous compared to the original slightly pixelated blobs. I actually couldn't see what the characters were doing clearly in the original, but now I can and …

I put hundreds of hours into this game on PS1, I had Filled a notebook, so I would know where to go, and what to do with the different character story lines, and how to get the best items. This game doesn't hold your hand, and is from a different more hardcore genre of JRPGs, you can get lost on what to do next, and end up going to every location you have found, and still not progress a characters story. It is not …

Spectacularly unhinged in every way. Poorly explained mechanics, nonsensical world, obscene difficulty spikes, unrealistic character motivations, plot points that can only be summed up as going from A-Z...I could keep going. SaGa Frontier is an unmitigated mess, but if you can get past that and enjoy the ride without necessarily understanding why - you might just have a great time. These 90s RPGs have charm and …

2 seconds to, New Players: This is an RNG Save-Scrum JRPG. (not unlike Rogue-likes where you die/repeat or Reset-game before Bosses for that 3% drop) Mostly hand-drawn with gorgeous 2D sprites. Beautifully upscaled and polished. --- I'll list Positives specific to this REMASTER, by importance: 1. True to the original. (Added without taking away, same art style) New Scenes for Asellus. New playable Character Fuse. …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SaGa Frontier is my favourite JRPG ever, which is weird, because it's also somewhat flawed. Compared to polished gems like Chrono Trigger and FFVI, SaGa Frontier can look like an uncultured barbarian. There's not that much dialogue, the world is full of dead ends, the difficulty is uneven. However, it compensates it's roughness with style, originality and sheer fun. It also has a lot of tactical depth, and a somewhat arcane stat/leveling system. But the most important part is, SaGa Frontier…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There seems to be a common issue with controller support to stop working for many users. Unsure why and there really has not been a fix for it yet. Until then, cant recommend playing a game created for the PS and cant even use a controller of any kind with it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great adventure between 8 different protagonist but this is not an rpg for beginners of the genre. Saga frontier will absolutely kick your ass and not be afraid to do it. Unlike romancing saga minstral song which i played earlier you can actually flee battles without consequence and it's more encouraged to do so. Battle ranks is still very much a thing as with all saga games the more you fight the tougher the monsters get as they scale with you. Grind too much and you could be absolutely…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you loved the game when it first came out, read no further, go buy the game. It's a really good remake, with greatly cleaned up sprites, sensible QoL upgrades and restored content. But the game itself, well, nostalgia could only get me so far. 3 characters' stories in, the repetitiveness really bit me, and the game's much-adored "non-linearity" at the time is just that the game doesn't handhold you in letting you figure out where to go (except that there's a "story" section in the menu that…

Wednesday we try a JRPG I never finished the first time with SaGa Frontier Remastered! Saturday at Midnight (or close to it) it's a random game out of character!
neutral · AI labelView post →A good remaster of a PS1 classic that brings many QOL improvements and fixes a couple of the original's shortcomings by reintroducing some much-needed cut content, but falls short in elevating this game above the status of a kusoge guilty pleasure. Saga Frontier always was (and remains with this new iteration) a beautiful broken mess, one that will probably only appeal to nostalgic gamers or amateurs of obscure and cryptic video-games that want to experience the best and worse of a highly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this when I was young, and loved it. I picked this up and played it fresh and, after beating Emilia's scenario, felt pretty bad. It wasn't that fun. I thought that this might be another game ruined by nostalgia goggles. But then I played T260s scenario with New Game+, and everything clicked! It all felt magical again, and weird... in a good way! The SaGa games are unique in that unlike most JRPGs where your exploration is relegated to locations and plot, SaGa has you explore…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overview They just don’t make JRPGs like they used to. Either that or maybe I’m just getting old and screaming these words at the kids who are out on my lawn. Whichever it is, the entertainment value that I get out of some of the classics is a high that I can’t seem to get out of any of the modern releases in the genre. Give me a Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI and I’ll blow an entire weekend on it. SaGa Frontier has a throne reserved for it at this table. I remember playing it as a…

SaGa Frontier is an unmitigated mess, but if you can get past that and enjoy the ride without necessarily understanding why - you might just have a great time. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have beat the game now with all of the characters and can say I would recommend this game. Do understand what you are getting. You are getting seven different characters, each with different stories and then an extra character who will go and recap the character's stories when you beat the game with a character. The quality of the different characters' stores varies greatly. Some characters have a branching and interesting story while a couple of characters literally can face their final…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautifully remastered classic PS1 JRPG. I hope you don't enjoy classic leveling systems this doesn't have it. It also doesn't hold your hand thru much. Lute is best boy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game when it first released on the PlayStation and came into this remaster with rose tinted glasses on and still hate it. It's a lazy port and most of the changes make things worse. I've cleared two routes and both got soft locked when route flags didn't set properly. The last was on T260 who has to visit three locations in his original chassis. If you change body type, the story won't progress. No where does it give any hint that you could run into a problem like that. So…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Full disclaimer: I like the PSX version of this game. I played it in Squaresoft's 'weird and experimental' era following the roaring success of Final Fantasy VII. So I cannot be completely impartial. Nevertheless I will try to judge this on it's merits as well as it's regrettable design choices. The Romancing SaGa series has always prided it's self upon forcing the player to explore and experiment. This game doesn't stray far from that philosophy. It does not hold your hand in the least about…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright, sometimes we have to be honest about the things we love. Saga Frontier is not the BEST Playstation RPG. Parts of it I would consider entirely inscrutable without a walkthrough or guide of some sort. The difficulty is all over the place where you can easily wander into a zone where you'll just get destroyed by monsters, or worse you'll be FORCED into a place where you're more or less incapable of winning fights. The magic system is simultaneously simplistic yet confusing... Saga…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like the original, get this. if you're new, don't. if you do get it even though you are new be sure to follow a guide so you don't get locked in a dungeon that you can't leave until it's finished. my last bit of advice, don't grind like you do in other rpg style games as this game will punish you severely for it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry, but i really disliked this. A lot of the time, there is not even the slightest hint at where you're supposed to go or what you're supposed to do next. The eight stories have a lot of overlap and you find yourself visiting the same places, completing the same sidequests and recruiting the same characters over and over. The stories aren't really linked to each other and there's no pay-off and no conclusion to the game. I'm not really sure what the point of it all was.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the original, and I loved the remaster. This is how a game should use eight characters with their own stories (... looking at you Octopath!!! -_- ) . It still has some of the problems of games from the time, mainly that there will be story moments where you don't really know what you are supposed to be doing. The stories themselves vary in linearity and openness as well as what regions you get to visit... but overall it is a very fun world setting with lots of variety in terms of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was always an amazing game. Watch out for quick load on start up screen!! It will happily erase your auto save progress in the blink of an eye!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay, review of Saga Frontier. Where do I begin with this pile of incoherent mess..... There are 7 stories in the original ( the 8th in this version is basically Fuse investigating the original 7 ) but they are all very shallow, bare bones stories. They almost look like outlines of potential stories for the final product as opposed to being the actual stories that should be in the final game. They are 7 separate stories that barely touch at all. Red and Blue ( which I swear are just place…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still a great game all these years later with fantastic music, characters and battle systems. Updated sprites look great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game and a classic, but is hard to get into for newcomers. However, the remaster adds a story section to help players navigate the world.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You haven't gotten this already? Because you really should. It's gold standard for innovative game mechanics and story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is its own worse enemy. The experience is incredible, but you have to put up with some frustrating balance issues in the early game to get there. This game seems to be only for those with rose-colored glasses that played it on the Playstation 1 in 1997. The story, music, and gameplay can easily be a 10/10 once you get to NG+ but the early balance is bizarre and worse than I remember as a teenager. I'm glad this remaster exists and everything improved on is beautiful, but I struggle to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good nostalgia. Now I will wait for Saga Frontier 2 remastered
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Your mage just ran out of mana and they're a wimp with 5 strength at late game? Just give them a gun and they'll be good as new. Worried about not having a weapon for a hero? Just teach them wrestling and karate moves! And... Oh yeah! The devs purposely didn't fix some exploits to make your life a lot easier in mid-late game. Fuse my beloved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did every scenario and was honestly getting a bit tired of the game during the last few because you can only do the exact same sidequests with the exact same dialogue with the exact same rewards so many times without it feeling more like a chore than the adventure it felt like in the first 3 playthroughs. The main stories in the scenarios also weren't all that engaging enough for me to make up for that, aside from Asellus, Emelia, and T260G. BUT... the battle system in this game is so fun to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SaGa Frontier Remastered is both a faithful recreation and a thoughtful enhancement of one of the most unconventional RPGs from the original PlayStation era. Developed by Square Enix and based on the 1998 cult classic, the remastered version brings a forgotten gem of the SaGa series into the modern spotlight with upgraded visuals, quality-of-life improvements, and long-awaited content additions. While the game still retains many of its quirks and complexities—some of which may feel foreign to…

neutral · AI labelView post →I have had two previous experiences with the SaGa series. The first was way back in the day, but I had no idea it was a SaGa game yet. I was playing Final Fantasy Legend on Gameboy. My friend let me play his Gameboy in like 4th grade and I thought it was cool because it was Final Fantasy (even though I now know it WASN'T!) My second experience was SaGa Frontier 2, which I have consistently named in the Top 3 of my most hated JRPGs of all time (Shadow Madness and Suikoden III being the other two…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an improvement on the original game. It has less grind(over kill in the original) and did a very good job on the PC port. If you enjoyed the original you should enjoy this. Simple game with simple stories but you might get bored with it after doing a single story line. Humans are the best. I recommend starting with a human character which catches your eye and filling your party with humans. If you finish that story(and slightly try out the other races) you might want to try it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I try to describe what is this game about, people would think I'm schizophrenic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game does not live up to the fond memories I have of it. It's always been an unbalanced mess. But the game does have it's parts where it really shines: - Asselus' story - the freedom of character recruitment and development - Monster development - "Biolabs Theme" - My favourite piece of video game music EVER I am really thankful for the port! If you can get it for around 10-15$, you might love it

neutral · AI labelView post →I grew up playing SaGa Frontier on PS1. I absolutely LOVED the game then. I was pretty heartbroken to learn that SquareSoft(at the time, they were still SquareSoft) had had to cut both a story AND parts out of another story to get the game out. When I learned that a Remaster was coming, and it was putting back in those missing pieces, I was THRILLED. I am so happy to return to a childhood favorite.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Game is still incomplete with remastered version, BUT Fuse helps wrap up a LOT of loose ends so that's nice of the developers to do. You get basically to play eight mini storylines, then another **SPOILER SPOILER** ADDITIONAL storylines for each respective character to give backstory. You also get a few "alternate" endings for some characters, so there is a lot of gameplay to be had, but biggest gripe is some of that additional gameplay requires running through a lot of VERY SIMILAR…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Remastered is awesome and introduces lots of quality of life improvements to this game. The biggest ones are the New Game+ that carries over your items, equipment and arts/skill. Since there are multiple heroes and when you complete one story you don't have to regrind again. If a hero appears in a previous story and you leveled that hero, the hero will appear with the same skills and magic unlocked! There is also a story section that tells you exactly what you need to do next to trigger the…

neutral · AI labelView post →I think this is the best definitive experience for this JRPG GEM! More PSX remakes should be done like this. It helps that the original sprite work was beautiful to begin with. 5 star for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid remaster of a solid game. Not much to say here. If you like SaGa games you'll like this one, if you don't like them this probably won't change your mind, if you are new to the series Romancing SaGa 2 is still better starting point. It serves as a nice bridge between retro and more modern games as it contains a bit of mechanics from both, with monsters, robots and mutants/mystics from old games and tech glimmering, battle rank and multiple scenarios from newer ones. There is a lot of soul…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish there was more "story" to this game. I get that it's an open sandbox sort of thing, but it doesn't feel very free or open when there's none of the interactivity or emergent gameplay from something like Ultima, but it does have the rail-roaded JRPG structured story from Squaresoft's other games, just without much writing. Scenes sort of start and stop, and the game is absolutely stingy on details on where to go and what to do. The Remastered version does some work to mitigate that,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pro's: Tons of freedom of movement, party composition, battle style Cute, endearing story lines Fun combat system Con's: Steep learning curve Some fights overly difficult for new players
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →31. SaGa Frontier Remastered (T-260G, Tiki, Lute and Fuse's routes) Finished out the routes i didn't do the last time i played this. Still a great game with a lot of charm. Great art, fun gameplay and great music.
positive · AI labelView post →This game is a true classic, one of the coolest RPGs of its time and it still holds up today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played the original SaGa Frontier on PlayStation a heckuva a lot. I really like it, but I'll readily admit it isn't for everyone. It's nonlinear structure and flexible character customization make it feel extremely different from other JRPGs. Every system in this game feels like an experiment. The monster, robot, and mystic party members all operate by their own rules for advancement. The magic system and skill system are unlike any other game (aside from other SaGa games). The sci-fi…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review is of both the remaster and the original. A very good remaster of a great, but flawed RPG. This game sold over 1 million copies when it first came, and I suspect part of this reason was because the back of the box claimed that there was something around 140 of game play. Impressive, sure, but admittedly a lot of this is repetitive content that you will repeat six or seven times in order to truly experience the entire game. Pros: - Fantastic game music, some of the best on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this remaster if you're a long time fan of Saga Frontier. I've played as a kid and loved to play again as an adult. Totally recommend it. New game plus makes the replay value a lot less grindy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: Too unfocused on the story to be a narrative-driven game, yet too linear to be open world. PROS: ➕Unique combat/healing system ➕Good quality remaster ➕Multiple characters/stories CONS: ➖Odd story presentation ➖Unforgiving difficulty ➖Many things are not explained very well This will be a shortened review as I did not complete the game. I found SaGa Frontier Remastered (SFR) to be a strange game. It’s an RPG that is too open-ended to be a linear story-based RPG, but…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better then you remember and definitely better then you expect it to be. 100% replay ability
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Created the person you'll never see today.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game, but honestly it's because I played this back in the Playstation 1 days. There's a lot of good quality of life updates and additional content compared to the original, but anyone new to this game or the SaGa series in general will probably find it very rough and difficult.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This remaster really remastered my feeling from childhood. This is the most addictive SaGa game I've ever played! Total in-game hour 63 hours. Play till NG+13 cleared! Watched all 7 original endings and 7 remaster endings! If there is something I would like to ask, please release other SaGa series remaster!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having this game remastered is truly a dream come true. SaGa Frontier is one of my all time favorite games. I have easily probably dumped thousands of hours in this game. If you played it in the past know that is has some great QoL (Quality of Life) updates. I do not like the name changes of certain moves but there is a mod to switch them back. To me this is a solid 10/10. Give it a try if you never played it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the ORIGINAL.I HATE with a passion, what they did with this game. They made everything very LINEAR, and too many explanations. Why did they change the skill's original names? They're AWFUL and don't feel right. I literally want to cry every time I see "Ursine Assault" (used to be Bear Crush, flows/sounds better). They don't have Fuse as a playable character on this steam version it seems? Why?Some of the graphics are a bit nicer and smoother, however whenever you use Phantasm Shot, the art…
