What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 180 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (449 of 525 positive).
Players say Book of Shadows is a visual novel with point-and-click elements, differing from the original RPG. [1][2][3] Many find the story and lore valuable, but the gameplay tedious and the gore excessive. [4][5][6] Some reviewers recommend it only for fans of the series, warning about the change in format. [4][7][8]

"Misery porn with a budget" is what I'd say when explaining Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. I bought this game because I love the series and because I was told that this game was an essential, canon that would be necessary in understanding the events in CP2 and CP: BD. As it turns out, that second part was massively exaggerated (more on that at the end) and the first part is now under serious scrutiny. The chilling …

Party of Dead Bodies, Gore and Panties! Eto, seriously way too much panties, unnecessary panty shots, but the game is great bro. Keep in mind if you played the first one, it's not a pixel game like that. This one is a point and click based visual novel with some timers and of course choices matter. Also this is not the sequel it's the prologue or like repetition of the previous title but with alternative endings, I …

As much as I love Corpse Party series BoS is the weakest installment of them all. Still interesting but just not as good, maybe it was the point&click mechanic that wasn't engaging and got really tedious at times or maybe the really long descriptions that just drag on and on and it's somehow overall not what you expect from the gameplay after the previous game. Will still recommend it if you really like the previous …

I've finally achieved 100% completion, so it's time to give an honest no-spoiler review for Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. This game was very different from its predecessor. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows plays like a visual novel with a point and click adventure style of game play. At first, it took some getting used to since the first game was an RPG Horror game, but thankfully it didn't take too long. The more …

First of all, keep in mind that this game is ONLY a visual novel, with the option to move around the map, which is completely different from the prequel. Now that I've warned about this: - Divine OST - If you like visual novels, you might like to give it a try. - Very good art and voice acting. Also, as a final note, it is highly recommended to play with headphones, this way you can better enjoy the OST, the voices …
Summarised from 34 of the 281 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
79% of the 180 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. The complaint that keeps coming up: gameplay is tedious and frustrating. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Corpse Party: Book of Shadows received "mixed or average" reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Matthew Diener of Pocket Gamer gave the game a positive review, feeling that the game was "scary and modern in all the right ways" and that "Book of Shadows preserves the feel of its predecessor while improving on its aged gameplay and graphics." Matt Kamen in The Guardian, said that enjoyment of the game was dependent on the patience of the player, given the large amount of text, but the game "will provide a sterling example of Japanese horror." Famitsu reviewers were mostly positive. Matthew Pollesel from Gaming Age was also mostly impressed with the game, putting…

I’m just a simple woman and the limitations of that engine just happen to force devs to make the exact type of game that i love to play

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm not impressed with this. I played the first game, and the summary of this one says "sequel, prequel, midquel, and alternate universe tale all in one." So I bought it, and so far it only been "alternate tales" which still end with the same characters dying. There was a little prequel but honestly wasn't need whatsoever. Also they took away a lot of abilities such as movement, skipping dialogue you've been through, and game play (as it's mostly scene cuts 75% of the time). Just for the…

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm not sure what's wrong. I loved the first Corpse Party, I thought the story was nice and I wanted more. But here... well, I didn't get very far, but so far it seems to be like a retelling of the first game? As in, some characters are aware that this has already happened before, and yet it is happening again. But my main issue was the writing. I don't know what it was about it that I didn't like. The pacing? The style? It was slow, sure. The very first scene contained a discussion of how…

negative · AI labelView post →DISAPPOINTED I’m quite disappointed with this second game after finishing the first one. This installment feels more like a visual novel with only minimal interactive elements; just a bit of searching or clicking on the map to progress the story, and nothing more. The new feature feels unnecessary; it would have been better as a full visual novel rather than incorporating a half-baked mechanic that ends up frustrating. The first game was far superior. Even though unlocking all endings and…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you wanted more of that delightful edgelord doujin flavor from Corpse Party but in the form of seven short stories that don't really go anywhere or contribute to the overall plot of the original game, then Book of Shadows is for you! It also has the prologue for the next game shoved in there, as if to remind you that you bought the wrong one. Disappointing. Not even a single utterance of "Butter Up My Pooper" in this thing at all.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is pretty much an added story to Corpse Party. Too much gore (I've been playing too many horror games where the creator(s) think gross=scary or interesting) and not enough truly scary moments. I'm also not keen on having to get every single ending in each chapter to unlock chapter 8, which is the true sequel moment. Also panty shots. Wtf.

negative · AI labelView post →The stories are pretty good, but they might have been better off sticking purely to the visual novel format. The "gameplay" is just annoying. Seeing the more minor characters get some spotlight is pretty cool, and like in the first game there's lots of gorey bad ends! It's worth your time.
