After 8 hrs playing and managing to beat act 3, my experience with this game is, to put it simply, annoyed. Why is it annoying? Its because it suffers from 3 things that I find it annoying. Since I'm inbetween storylines I have once again managed to find a roguelite game that consumes me, and I can't recommend it enough. Drop Duchy. It's tetris, it's Catan, it's a deckbuilder, it's build synergy and it's like crack, at least to me. There's a basegame+Tribe dlc sale on steam rn too.

Since the world is on fire and recharging your mental batteries is important, I’m gonna give a Friday game recommendation! I’ve been really enjoying Drop Duchy recently - it’s a tetris/deckbuilder/roguelite mishmash that doesn’t seem like it should work, but absolutely does. I suspect witchcraft.

So Drop Duchy is kind of interesting. It's a deckbuilder where your deck is the buildings that you use in a Tetris style puzzle game to build a board containing resource pieces, your buildings, and enemy buildings. It recontextualizes Tetris because you need to think piece by piece not line by line.

It was fun for a little while, but the unlocks adding to the drafting pool started to make every run so unfocused that the fun just fell off the farther I got, and I didn't even get to the end. The more I unlocked, the worse and less fun my runs were. That seems pretty poorly designed.

This game is good, but it's marred by a slightly messy progression, unbalanced factions, and varying levels of rng-sensitivity, that drain some fun from it. The first few hours are great as the first faction is not very sensitive to in which order you might get your tiles, and it scales well, making the first 3-5 hours good fun of reasonable progression and resistance. However, the more you unlock (tiles/passives), the more watered down your choices are and the less likely you are to get the…

Want to preface this by saying I really wanted to like this game... I like roguelikes but i appreciate being able to manage the RNG aspects. This game is plagued with some of the most intense RNG of any roguelike i've played... every piece is reliant on RNG and every piece pushes you closer to the end of the game even if you play perfectly and get the RNG gods bless you with amazing pieces till the first boss you still get curb stomped if you draw one bad piece.

I watched some friends play the game. It seemed really interesting. Tetris is the kind of game that I can get stuck in for longer than I'd like to say. However, I found myself disappointed with the strategy aspect. Since the player has little to no control over the pieces dealt to them, you're just hoping that you're not gonna shoot yourself in the foot when your buildings come out. My biggest pet peave with the game is just how difficult the production and military buildings are to use…

I feel very yes and no about Drop Duchy. It's a curious mix of tetris, roguelite and deckbuilding, but for me I found the most important thing you do is to stop playing tetris. Instead you should leave gaps when the strategy requires so. That's what the game is about. Also always invest in military buildings. I don't find this game particularly addicting, but there are lots of achievements and sometimes I feel like going after them. It's not a bad game, there's plenty of content and everything…

For the record, I never enjoyed playing Tetris much. Why then have I put 40+ hours into a game which from its store page you can clearly see is inspired by Tetris? Although the inspiration is clear, the devs of Drop Duchy have truly transformed the simple gameplay of Tetris into a far more meaningful and enjoyable experience. Rather than just abstract shapes, the tiles you drop into the grid consist of different terrain pieces such as plains, rivers and forests. You also have a deck of…

Once you start unlocking more mechanics this game really shines. Not sure about the balancing yet, some builds feel quite underpowered, while some feel overpowered, but that might also be my lack of understanding of the game (I just completed my third run and beat the game). Definitely recommend, it plays out very chill, you have quite a lot of time to decide placing the Tetris blocks so not much pressure there. The combat system works out nicely as well.

If the developer's intent is for this game to be fun, I cannot tell. It's ok for the first few plays, but repeatedly losing unless you play on Easy is not fun, nor good game design. The tetris elements are decently implemented, but they clash with the idea of trying to build a city/duchy/township, especially if those games do not carry much into the next round if you will be worried about healing constantly, which you will, making the game less about trying to proceed and succeed, more about…

I think most people wouldn't argue about this game being marketed as a roguelike (other than roguelike traditionalists). In that case, is Tetris a roguelike? If not, what makes Drop Duchy a roguelike and Tetris not one?

Not my cup of tea, but the quality of the game itself is not bad. Graphics, replayability, mechanics, progression - all is good.

Use block-dropping mechanics to collect resources, recruit troops to fight against belligerent armies, and let every block shape your realm, leading your path to victory in this hybrid rogue-lite game. Learn more on Drop Duchy: Complete Edition in our review: somanygames.co.uk/review/drop-...
