What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,009 of 2,163 positive).
Players praise Dropsy as a heartfelt, unique point-and-click adventure with a charming, misunderstood clown. [1][2][3] Many note the game's lack of text and reliance on visual storytelling, which can be both endearing and confusing. [4][5][6] Some reviewers find the puzzles obtuse and the slow pacing frustrating, despite the game's positive vibe. [5][7][8]

I really tried to like this game. It is creative (in content and gameplay) and has a interesting atmosphere/vibe, but the gameplay is just not enjoyable. The complete lack of text and the vagueness of (some of) the image "speech bubbles" makes the individual puzzles too ambiguous for the type of very specific things you need to do to solve them. There is also SO MUCH slow walking from place to place, coupled with …

A million years ago on Something Awful, a guy posted a series of pixel art drawings depicting the adventures of Dropsy the Clown--to great acclaim. Dropsy embodies the spirit of the world that he lives in. He's ugly, dirty, and repulsive--but there's an inextinguishable spirit of kindness and empathy working against all of those negative attributes. Dropsy is just as charming in his games as he was on SA all those …

Dropsy is one of those games that makes my heart melt and is a certified Jay Tholen banger, genuinely one of my favourite point and click games of all time because of how it made me feel, and I say that as someone who rates Hypnospace Outlaw as one of, if not my favourite game of all time. It's so bouncy, colourful, cute, adorable and is just a wonderful adventure from start to finish. It is a fantastic little open …

Dropsy is one of the weirdest, most heartfelt point-and-click adventures I’ve ever played. You control a misunderstood clown who speaks in pictures, hugs everyone he meets, and slowly uncovers a story that’s both surreal and surprisingly emotional. The art is vibrant and unsettling in just the right way, and the soundtrack is an absolute gem. That said, be prepared to do a lot of wandering. The game gives very …

I really enjoyed this game! The art is great and the story was compelling. I like that you get to hug everything. I did find this game really hard. The puzzles weren't intuitive and I had a hard time navigating the story since there was no text, only pictures. I had to use a walkthrough because most of the time I found myself wandering back and forth, unsure of what to do. If you're really good a puzzles, are …

92% of the 184 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Dropsy. The complaint that keeps coming up: puzzles are often vague and require a walkthrough. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The PC version received "favorable" reviews, while the Switch version received "average" reviews, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Adam Smith for Rock Paper Shotgun called Dropsy a "touching allegory for all manner of otherness and confusion" but criticized the game's surrealist presentation and puzzle mechanics.

It's not cynical. It's not violent. It's not conventional in any way. But it is a one of a kind game you'll never forget!
positive · AI labelView post →oh my gosh Dropsy is gonna be 10 this year. the game not the being.
neutral · AI labelView post →here's a game I was working on between 2004 and 2006 in Multimedia Fusion. thanks to an unsolvable (for me at the time) EDRT error I had to quit development. some cool trivia though: Dropsy was originally a boss for this game.
neutral · AI labelView post →One of the dumbest decisions I made as a mod was not letting Jay promo his game Dropsy in GBS. A "letter > spirit" decision that was a disservice to him & the community. Jay & team went on to make one of my all time favorite games, Hypnospace Outlaw, whetere you play as a mod/detective.
neutral · AI labelView post →Replaying Dropsy eight years after its release, it felt like a game very much at odds with itself. Not in a bad way, mind you, but more noticeably than when I first played it. I had easily dismissed it at the time, but now it was quite obvious that it was in fact two distinct games, sandwiched together in the same plot, but which didn't work very well together: the first – an unconventional open-world hugs collect-a-thon, the second a more proper story-driven point-and-click adventure. Not only…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man, what the hell did I just play. And yes, I know, we aren’t supposed to judge books by the covers… blah, blah, blah… But by God, if that thing came up to hug me on the street, I’d have an in-game reaction of the little boy from the playground – pointed at him and then scream-cried my way out of there with a speed of Formula One winner. And it’s not that his looks somehow override the kindness of his heart, no, it’s that I find something inherently creepy about an adult being that WANTS to…

First off, there's general technical issues like screen tearing (apparently no solution to enable vsync in 2024 anymore) or the game freezing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The review rated Most Helpful at the time of writing is a negative review saying that the game is visually impressive but ultimately boring. The review itself is fine. I definitely don't think point-and-click games are for everyone. However, the fact that it's rated Most Helpful despite the game having 94% positive ratings is criminal. I genuinely think people come to this store page and give a thumbs up to the negative reviews just because they don't like the look of Dropsy. And I get it.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Learning that Hypnospace Outlaw was written by a weird centrist who believes in redeeming villains above all narrative explained so much about that game. I'd say that tricking a bunch of nostalgic gays into uncritically being cops was clever subversion, except the Dropsy guy isn't that clever.

neutral · AI labelView post →It's not my cup of tea, but I can see why it has a high Metacritic rating and Steam reviews. Due to its text-free experience, the story mainly uses a "show, don't tell" approach. You may miss something if you don't pay attention to small/implied details or if you only rush the main story. Both the visuals and audio are fairly good. I felt the solutions to some puzzles were nonsensical, although I saw it coming since some parts the game itself felt bizarre. I chose to use a guide after playing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, really recommend to anyone who wants a good old adventure game with very limited interaction... ...but the achievements are buggy and cruel. Had to minimise the screen and restart before most of the achievements popped, and one of them required having the squeaky clown shoe noise on (which if you remember to tick it, takes 2/3rds of the game to achieve). Such a shame too, as the music for this game is a great mix of jazzy numbers. Plot is good; main character is, well, lets…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dropsy is a game about kindness & selflessness. Dropsy is a pixelated point and click adventure game that is melancholic, yet it's not about sadness. You progress by helping others and seeing your positive actions change the world around you. That's what makes Dropsy so special to me. Try it yourself!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What does it say about me that a barely-sentient nightmarish clown feels like a self-insert (for me, not Jay Tholen, no offense Jay; Project1: It's Time) So like, Dropsy is exactly what every adventure game should be. Gorgeous, great audio, interesting yet ridiculous story, just enough going on in the background to keep you wondering what is coming next, and most importantly never leaving you feeling like you have absolutely no idea what is going on nor how you can possibly find a way to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not a fan of point n click games, but I decided to give this game a try, bcz it was on sale for less than a dollar, and honestly it was completely worth it! Dropsy it's a low-paced, "cozy" game I'd say, so take that into consideration. It has no dialog nor text (at least not in a comprehensive language), but still tells a wholesome story with beautiful pixel-artwork and soundtrack. The tasks are simple, yet interesting, and they require looking and searching around different objects that…

I dig the set up and the aesthetic: this horrifying but not at all horrible creature in a really horrible world... I fooled around here for 78 minutes but the truth is...i was dreding the next time I played. I was just bored by the idea of it. This feels like those games you could play for free online during the 2000s. That's to say that's not bad at all,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play Dropsy!! The soundtrack for this game is in my regular rotation. Weird, wonderful, surprisingly wholesome.
positive · AI labelView post →Dropsy has a weirdly put together story with a lot of loose ends. It's based off a "choose your own adventure" forum post that end up having parts cut or vastly changed for the game to work. Although the core concept remains, saying the story was "made by the internet itself" is a bit of an overstatement — the original thread is much shorter and the changes result in a mix of questionable plot points and sudden lore dumps on the final chapter. I reached out to the developers back in 2018 and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Creepy and Cute, Fun and Fearsome, Silly and Sad, Anxious and Adorable. This adventure does so little, but achieves so much. The 'DiaOps' strips away the thick, unwieldy dialogue that some P&Cs suffer from, and turns almost every statement into an emotionally visceral expression. The simple, logical puzzles, are mostly '1 Key for 1 Lock' in style, but can still give you pause now and again, providing room for thought without ever being frustratingly obscure. The map is not expansive, but each…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lovely adventure game about a lovely clown and his lovely animal friends. Feels like an old LucasArts game but with about a tenth of the frustration. A friend recently complained to me that Disco Elysium had "too much reading". There are literally no English language words in Dropsy. Not even in the settings menu. You will not need your dictionary.

neutral · AI labelView post →The point & click Dropsy comes to mind. You play an ugly clown that tries to help everyone smile despite everyone blaming him for his own mother's death. It's a whole game about being unilateraly kind to your neighbor.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dropsy started as a choose-your-own-adventure-game on the Something Awful forums. I highly recommend you read through it on the author's site. It's simply amazing, and it shows you the progress of Dropsy, before it was even decided it was to become a game. https://jaytholen.net/dropsy2.html There are no words in this game, all the actions are spelled out with icons and actions. This simplifies things to a degree, but it's also a lot harder. Characters can't just spell out what they mean.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Inspired by the Japanese Playstation classic "Chulip", this game had a nice vibe, in a cool universe, with no dialogue (Everything is explained by little drawings). Sadly, a few flaws ternish his value. You will be able to finish it by yourself, with the right amount of difficulty. If you are going completionist without the walkthrough, it will take you months, with one or two incredibly hard enigmas that are not absolutely predictable. Even when you get the car, the back and forth on a wide…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very strange and entertaining point and click adventure with a lot of heart. Reminds me of the old 90's adventure games starring a load of weird and wonderful characters. Dropsy is a delightful adventure! positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best P&C's I've ever played. The world is so charming and sweet, but a hint of eeriness that grows the longer you play it. As we explore the town, we try to make life more bearable for everyone in dark and depressed times using only love and hugs.
