What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 229 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,967 of 3,628 positive).
Players compare it to Balatro but emphasize it's a distinct blackjack roguelike. [1][2][3] Many find it strategic and rewarding, though some criticize its balance and repetitiveness. [4][5][6] Several reviewers note it's fun but lacks the depth or polish of genre greats. [7][8][9]

dungeons and degenerate gamblers is not what i had hoped it would be. i like the way it looks, the game is fun conceptually, the advertising sold me, but the gameplay totally lost me. a lot of design decisions are confusing and feel undercooked. the game ends up being tedious, unbalanced, and low-agency. things are too safe or too risky - decision-making relatively easy in practically every situation throughout the …

THIS IS NOT A BALATRO CLONE. It's entirely its own thing. I love the enemies you get to face off against. There's nothing as satisfying as having a smug enemy standing on a 21, you pull some shenanigans, make them go bust, and then YOU win with a flawless blackjack. I love it!

This is the most unbalanced Roguelike I've ever played. This game actively repels newcomers with how obtuse it is to actually succeed in a full run, yet I still recommend it. The lack of balance in this game requires you to mentally, aggressively tier list all of the cards. Low cost cards are nearly always objectively better. Heart cards are also nearly objectively better as they are your only source of …

I would sum up this game as nice, but underwhelming. The pixel graphics are serviceable, nothing flashy. The gameplay is intuitive and quick to pick up. Each run is just the right length that you can have a quick session without a serious time commitment, but it's also very replayable if you want to hunker down for longer. Ultimately, it's fun for someone like me who's perpetually looking to fill the void left …

Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is not Balatro, but boy does it feel like it at times. I feel really bad saying that, especially because this was in development before it, but it's the honest to god truth. You can say "but it's blackjack" all you want, the gameplay loop feels astoundingly similar. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing; in fact, I've opened this up instead of Balatro at times. It's a wholly different …

Players who liked Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers talk about unique blackjack twist with creative card effects; those who didn't talk about unbalanced and punishing for newcomers. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 63% of critics. Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer criticized the randomness, which they said could be very frustrating. However, Rock Paper Shotgun praised its creativity and recommended Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers on the strength of being able to thoroughly defeat opponents with deadly combos. Though they did not recommend it, PC Gamer said that patches to remove some of the design decisions that they found frustrating could make it a great game. TouchArcade said people…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I adore the deckbuilder rouguelite genre, and while I really thought this game had the juice at first, after a handful of hours it becomes apparent that it cannot stack up to the greats: Slay the Spire, Balatro, and Inscryption. The primary issue I identified with the game is how repetitive the experience is run to run with relatively little randomization. The encounters and bosses are always the same, and you can very consistently craft basically the exact type of deck you want every time.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh, the game is cool and all, but I think it has too many effects that turn it into a random fiesta... most of the runs idk what is happening, why that card is in my deck? why did I burst? how did I win that? It doesn't feel good when that happens, if happens once in a while it's ok, but most of the games becomes like that. It really shines when you can actually build a deck with synergy and isn't just random BS, but that rarely happens.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Here’s my experience with some of the bosses in this game: I fought the vampire boss Alucard who had a card that gave him infinite healing. The match lasted 30 minutes until I realized I was stuck in a stalemate and just conceded the run. Another boss, Greed, has a card that gives him infinite shield generation and unavoidable burst damage. He had more shield each round than I had damage so there was nothing I could do before he bursted me down. “Just deal with their cards then?” If only…

The lack of balance in this game requires you to mentally, aggressively tier list all of the cards. Low cost cards are nearly always objectively better. You can say "but it's blackjack" all you want, the gameplay loop feels astoundingly similar. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing; in fact, I've opened this up instead of Balatro at times. It's a wholly different premise as well. You play as a blackjack player beating every bar patron one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(Played more time offline so ignore my hours) Everyone says the issue is that it released right after Balatro and got unfairly compared but that's not the problem. The problem is that the game never really locked down what it is trying to be and therefore has no hook. And in a genre that's all about the hook, that's a big issue. For what it tries to do it doesn't stick the landing or engage you much. You have better playing card battler roguelikes that either take a more strategic and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't find it fun. You can clearly see the inspiration it draws from and if you like blackjack, check it out and you may enjoy it. I found it difficult to use a controller as I still had to hover a mouse to see certain elements. Even though I didn't like it, I think other people might. Check it out on sale maybe. I'll still recommend because I don't think it's a bad game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I desperately want to like this game. I mean, I love Balatro, and this feels like it should be close. Deck builders and roguelikes are some of my favorite games. Why does the math in this one seem so . . . unfavorable? Why do leave this game not wanting to touch it again for a while? I just get this vibe that the cards are stacked against me in a way I don't like to compete against.

neutral · AI labelView post →Maybe i'm dumb but like theres too much random ♥♥♥♥ going on to feel like decisions about deckbuilding really matter, and unfortunately that's all there is. It has a vibe but no narrative, nothing to unlock but deck cosmetics. After 3 hours I feel like I've seen everything it has to offer, and actually there wasn't much more to it than the demo except for more areas/opponents who are amusing the first time through but thats it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not my jam. The RNG is way too wack, and with the opponents having decks that you don't really know until you're played them a couple times, you're either crushing them in 1 hand, or you can end up in a 50-hand meaningless battle. I ended up in a matchup with the Squire where he had 50+ shields and I had 100 health after the 20th hand. And it's not even that fun to build your deck. It doesn't feel like you're getting better at strategizing because your opponent has a hand full of potpourri.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is monstrous. Brutally unpleasant. Whatever "inspiration" its developers may have drawn from Balatro and Slay the Spire has been severely lost in translation, and a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes those games engaging and fun. Blackjack, by nature, is strategic. Your edge against the house advantage is mitigated by playing the odds. This game earns its rogue stripes by dispensing of that framework and letting chaos run supreme—cards can mean ANYTHING and even when you play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are only a handful of games that I consider to be kings of the deckbuilding genre of games. In no particular order they are: Inscryption, Balatro, Slay the Spire, and Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers. D&DG is an incredibly layered and rewarding experience that requires immense strategy, foresight, and probability analysis. Each run is largely determined by RNG, however after playing enough and learning all the cards, opponents, and special events you can severely limit how much RNG makes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Balatro but gambling. This game taught me that gambling is always profitable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun most negative reviews about rng but in my opinion makes it more fun for relaxed players
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beat several runs on different paths/decks, to give context. Allows you to view your deck as well as the opponents' deck at any time. It's very easy to add/remove cards from the enemy (and for them to do it to you) so you don't really have exact control over what happens. In my experience I either went for a lot of small or a lot of big cards, mixing in ones that manipulate opponent card values, destroy them or add bunch of 0s to mine to stall, so I can react better when the opponent stands.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoy Balatro, check out Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers. It's a demo but I really enjoyed playing this. The comparison to Balatro and its popularity has to be made, if only to make it easier to explain the game: it's blackjack instead of poker, and there's a lot of weird cards and funny references. Some example are a 13 of spades, pi (3.14) of hearts, a PS1 memory card that allows you to copy another card, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon and other trading card cameo appearances, credit cards,…
positive · AI labelView post →The negative reviews that claim they don't understand what's going on in their runs are honestly just not paying attention. Reading the card effects is half the game and the other half is learning how they synergize with each other. It can be a little more complex than Balatro at times, but I've never sat after a run and thought "man, I don't even know what just happened". It's (almost) always been my fault, whether it was due to my deck management or a total misplay. That said, there are…

neutral · AI labelView post →So I think Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers might be *my* personal Balatro. Blackjack is far and away my favorite card game, then throw things like a Communist Party Membership Card, a Charizard and a PS1 Memory Card into my deck of cards and I'm happy.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fight Your Crippling Gambling Addiction! I just realized the game's name, Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers (DnDG), is a riff on Dungeons & Dragons (DnD). Anyway, this is a roguelike poker card battler similar to Balatro, except this time it's about Blackjack. Even though my knowledge of this type of poker game is limited, the simplified form Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers provides is easy to learn, and the whacky non-poker cards the game offers are really fun to mess around with. I do, however,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally got to this in my backlog and I gotta say, I really don't understand these negative reviews. Despite its looks, this is just as strategic as Balatro and honestly a bit more my speed. The crux of the game is leveraging your odds and knowing when to throw in the towel. Your goal is not to play as many cards as you can to get some crazy number, it's about making smart choices and ideally getting a really nasty deck. I went back-and-forth against the President with a few duplicated…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play one card and stand. My opponent burns half, steals on, swaps with a coin, and deals double damage, ending my run I restart and beat them within 1 move I then die to a dog Great game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Slay the Balatro? Not quite as well-tuned as either, but still plenty of fun and a good number of cards & decks to mess around with.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to get into this game, but it just suffers from 1 big flaw in my opinion, all of the battles in every run are way too samey. A lot of your runs will feel very similar to 1 another because you basically fight the same opponents every run. Also a lot of the game mechanics are pretty much just throw cards in and hope they equal 21. Also the battles are extremely long and it slogs on a bit too much for me. Sorry it's a very cool concept that has a lot of potential, just the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to play Unicorn Overlord over my end of year break, but after playing Veilguard and then Indiana Jones, I need a bit of a break from bigger, longer games. Finally got around to playing Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers as well as playing Balatro for some shorter bursts of game time!
neutral · AI labelView post →I won't say a game exactly like Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers by @mosscollectors.bsky.social was on my list of game ideas, but I definitely crossed a few ideas off (thank you btw, I got too many) cause it's just that good. Every run makes for new think-on-your-feet blackjack roguelike surprises!

Aw dang it!" meme that's gone viral over the last couple of years? Yeah, yeah, you guessed it: Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers ("D&DG") is literally that sound. And I, quite frankly, love it. Like, I didn't expect to get hooked this quickly, this early? Seriously, I only have about five hours in this game, but dare I say it's number 3 on my roguelike list…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best roguelike deckbuilders ever for me, but one of the most frustrating games to 100% Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is made in such a way that even though it's based on Blackjack, you have vast absurd means to interfere with how the game plays out. In a way I think it's genius. There are so many cards, I mean, cards, not the numeric cards but rather cheat cards, these are your tools to mess with your opponents play, but the same goes for them, they will hijack you back too. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's passable, but not sure if it'll be very compelling if you played plenty of othe drafters. I kind of regret forcing myself to complete it, hoping the higher difficulties would make it more interesting, but that moment never came. It's just a tad too easy, even on the highest difficulty. Certain cards and effects are just so much better than anything else, it takes out all the fun out of drafting. Opponent decks never really get very challenging, so you don't really need to build a crazy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great fun for a while. If there's traditional roguelike depth here it sure doesn't feel like it, it is literally blackjack after all. Imo the best part of the game is just seeing what each individual card does. It's delightful having a 13 of spades, a credit card, and a Leg Sweep in your deck.

neutral · AI labelView post →this has got to be one of the worst games ive ever played. out of curiosity i restarted the game 50 time. the first hand is a guarenteed loss. the ai is actually RIGGED to win the first hand. 38 times it got a 2 card 19 or 20, 10 times it got a 21 and in all 50 restarts it doesnt lose the first hand. if your game is literally rigged from the start than youre actually garbage game developers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Summary Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers turns Blackjack into a roguelike deckbuilder, but misses the mark entirely. Instead of being excited to explore all the new cards and abilities, you are punished for engaging and forced to play a narrow, mindless, and boring strategy if you want any chance of winning. Playing on higher difficulties just makes refining your deck into that strategy more annoying than anything. Introduction and Mechanics You start out with deck selection where the first…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favourite roguelikes of all time! It has enough variety and stuff to discover to be endlessly entertaining, while also not being too complex or hard to learn! It's easy enough to have fun playing, but still challenging to win! Same thing for the achievements; most are interesting challenges.. and then the last ones are just insanely challenging, and I have yet to get a few of them, even after 100 hours, but I WILL get them some day
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →truly a great game, it really deserves more attention and praise :)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the base game is good and you can get insane combos. my only complaint is the lack of diversity when it comes to bosses and choices during a run. it would be cool to see an endless mode and also mod support

positive · AI labelView post →I'm not really a roguelike player to begin with but usually i still find some fun in those game. This one, not really. It's blackjack with extra step. All card have weird effects that ultimately make your game more difficult since you have to read, read read and read more. Problem with this? Playing with base deck all game would be more fun. Less complication, still playing the game (Since it's blackjack) and probably a better chance at victory. Usually in a game, I want progress, not nerf?…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A difficult, well-thought-out, unique, weird game with spotless art direction. Harder to cheese than Balatro, less addictive, and more unpredictable than its peers. I find it difficult to actually execute any premeditated build. There’s just too much chaos in the game to account for all the possible outcomes. You get a new card almost every turn, and the game keeps introducing all sorts of new mechanics, talismans, tarot cards, and other twists. Your opponent’s cards also constantly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/5 A fun game overall - I would give it a lukewarm recommendation. I feel as though I enjoyed the game more before I realized that most decks boil down to one of a couple of strategies with different coats of paint. Those strategies are fun enough and can be interesting to get to, but with the ways the game has to optimize your deck early, the time you spend getting to that point is usually not that long.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very unique and addictive game. Love the challenge and the requied ability to adapt deck strategy throughout the run
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is like the potato-chip bag of steam. At the start, you promise yourself one game, and then 8 hours later you have almost 100%'d it. Not a real example, but still.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game but I just can't recommend it. The build and enemy variety just doesn't quite feel right and every run feels dead simple or impossible with limited in between.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's go gambling!!!!! Do you like gambling? If so, you'll love this game. You traverse through various establishments, getting into ridiculous battles along the way using a deck of cards that often times isn't even legal. This game is a lot of fun, especially when you unlock new card synergies that you didn't know before. It's an awesome use of money. Cheers!
