Players praise the game's art style and combat, especially the parry system. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game is linear, not a metroidvania, with repetitive tutorials. [1][4][5] A few players report bugs and poor translation as drawbacks. [6][7][8]

Eastern Exorcist is a 2D hack and slash game. It's not a Metroidvania and it's just a linear adventure from point A to point B with no exploration. While the game looks really good, and the combat system would appear to have what's needed to be a great game, the game is unfortunately not designed well enough to take advantage of its own combat system. What I mean by the combat system has what's needed to be a great …

This game is a mostly linear action RPG, not a metroidvania as some had said. The game reminds me of Muramasa. The gameplay is hack and slash with charge attacks, parries and dodges. The art style is pretty unique, which differentiates it from other games. There are two completely different stories to play, each with a character with many skill sets (think of them as different super modes) to change up their …

This game´s a hidden gem, with all of this: - Deep and engaging story. - Challenging gameplay that rewards precision and strategy (yes, you can parry stuff). - Artistic design inspired by traditional Chinese culture. - Amazing hand-painted graphics with stunning details. - Immersive experience blending action and storytelling seamlessly. Give it a try!

5/10 Eastern Exorcist is a 2D side-scrolling action adventure that takes place in a Chinese based fantasy world filled with demons. The gameplay is fairly decent but doesn't really do anything remarkable. The story is mildly interesting albeit a bit hard to follow which is worsened by poor translation quality. The music is decent and fitting but not super memorable. The only really noteworthy thing about the game is …

pretty good combat was nice with many different enemy types and bosses and with strong emphasis on combos and parries which made it pretty satisfying overall story was so-so but this might be a cultural thing, and it was really visible translation for the western world wasn't their priority (which is fine) the biggest flaw imo was how much tutorials the disigners decided to put in the game - there are three …

71% of the 174 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Eastern Exorcist. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive and unskippable tutorials. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

A quick search revealed this has been a long-standing issue and the developers seem to have abandoned the game. Don't buy it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought i was going to like this one since i'm into side scrollers. However, stiff animations, not-very good character models, a silly story and a rough translation to english from chinese put me off. Giving this one a pass, there's a lot better games from this genre out there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good parry system, good boss fights, decent story line both sides. Good job devs.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games made of tinfoil and elmers glue, spams the same tutorial at you 15 times as if its attempting to teach a lobotomite, and my personal favorite: decides some sound effects should be at max volume even if every slider is at 15% volume. Art is pretty but thats the games main redeeming factor from the time played.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a decent Souls-like action title that is pretty enjoyable, but is also slightly let down by some of the game-play execution, and suffers from occasionally brain-damaged plotting alongside dubious translation. As far as the mechanics go it's a straight-forward hack and slash, with modest combo potential, a parry, a dodge, a charge attack, and a jumping slash. Beyond that you have items that provide buffs to offence / defence, and magical skills to aid you in combat. There's just…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite cheap and fun. Very chill and dynamic 2D sidescrolling action/slasher. Do not let screenshots and looks to fool you - this is NOT a metroidvania, nor it is an RPG. Combat is fun and fluid, multiple kinds of counter attacks and combos allow for fun various styled playthroughs. Bosses grant items that amplify certain playstyles. Game is also packing 2 completely different campaigns with different characters that have also very distinct combat styles. You have to get a separate save slot…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as good as it first appears. Options menu behaves "strangely" - it was some effort to get it to change resolution, with the left arrow going towards higher resolutions instead of lower. It also didn't always change when pressed. At first the resolution changed, but the menu scale didn't. Hitting Apply a second time got it scaling correctly. Controls are a bit clunky, WASD for movement plus IJKL for attack makes it awkward for setups optimised for KB & mouse. Would have been more awkward…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →KAMGUSTA'S MINI REVIEW A 2D side scrolling action game fighting-focused. It's mediocre at it's best (graphics, map, story, gameplay, size of areas, translation), but it has a noticeable "chinese" feel, so someone might be intrigued to play it just for that. As of september 2025 it is given away in a lot of bundles, so I think developers are kind of out of hope for selling it. There are A LOT of way better alternatives out there (Nine Sols, Blasphemous, Prince of Persia, Dead Cells, Ender…

I'd highly recommend it, Especially on a sale. Only thing that bothered me were the repeating tutorials in chapter one for both characters and a few other rough edges, But nothing that will ruin the experience.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairly boring side-scroller with some text formatting issues here and there. Nothing wrong with the gameplay itself, combat is fairly smooth even if i feel some moves animations should chain into each other instead of having to wait for the stance the reset. Tutorials and "challenges" are excessive in amount and rather boring. The unsheathing and sheathing motions gets annoying quickly since you can't do them while moving and you always sheath your weapon when the enemy is defeated.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Swift and precise controls experience, but the game is just not fun to play
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →mediocre, barely translated to english. There's a ton of other options in the genre, they are better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kind of feels low quality. The fighting isn't difficult (maybe I should have gone with a harder difficulty level?) but still just the little things about the game (like the animations, and the repetitive wind sound effect) made it feel like I was on Kongregate. Chinese voice acting is great though, and a few satisfying combos and skills. I may come back with a harder difficulty level.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game SUCKS; the 'tutorial 2' section is so annoying....the one where you press X after pressing X 3 times and then pressing X on more time after a delay... itjust doesn't register that you've done it.

positive · AI labelView post →This game has a very Vanillaware feel to it. Great combat and visual. Story was good too. I really liked this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had a lot of fun playing this game and doing all the achievements. The gameplay is very fluid and responsive, the game looks beautiful and we get 2 different characters, each with they own adventure, moves and skill.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I knew I was gonna hate this game the moment it showed me a giant tooltip explaining how to basic combo for the first 10 minutes and THEN give you challenge to do it like you haven't been doing it the entire time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →6/10 it takes about an hour of game play to unlock the fun stuff 2 story's in this game. playing the 2nd has you do a full reset back into game basics. each person is a little bit different. just gonna list things i didn't like - hitting combos could use another 0.5 second window. or it could just be the rumble and visual cues are off - most spells are locked behind boss challenges, they really shouldn't be. you finished it once, how about doing it again with a timer? that's where combat gets…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Highly recommended, not the longest game, but the game is really well crafted. Story was interesting and I liked both main characters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eastern Exorcist, which involves Eastern-mythology-inspired small stories under the umbrella of two main stories and two main characters, with overlapping events between them, which was great, is a surprisingly interesting and fun game with flowing, sometimes cruel, and low-budget cutscenes that are, most importantly, meaningful and moving despite their technical constraints. The most fascinating thing about this game is that you play as two characters with different abilities, storylines,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a 7 out of 10 game, it's good, but it could have been great. If you have played a fair share of Chinese indie games like me, you won't be surprised by knowing that it commits the same crime too many do as it implements too many mechanics and these end up breaking the balance hence the fun. For a rather short game, there is a crazy amount of items, skills, and upgrades, and these end up breaking the balance halfway very severely unfortunately. Some of the negative reviews also complain…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this from a Humble Bundle. Its got positives but it's U.I. and tutorial spamming system leave a lot to be desired. Combat control are OK at best, but it doesn't flow like other actions games. Souls-like gamer tag is a marketing joke. Don't let the trailer fool you, the game is not fast paced action... The video editor of that trailer did all the heavy lifting for this project. The price of $18 does not appear to be worth it due to the amateur/indie/student feel that hits me…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No real mouse support (cannot bind mouse keys in-game, but may be possible with AHK or similar if you're that committed); designed around using a controller and seems like a lazy attempt at a PC port. Combat is pretty hack-n-slash, but also slow and repetitive. Tutorials are unnecessarily long and repeat themselves multiple times. "Hard" difficulty provided no challenge whatsoever and moved incredibly slow; Was already bored by the second save point and nothing that really interests me further…

neutral · AI labelView post →A game that I think is one of those hidden gems is one called Eastern Exorcist. I often describe it as Sekiro but 2D, but even then that brushes over so much of it. It's a game that I've put a decent amount of time into speedrunning, and even showed a really scuffed run at ASM a couple years ago.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My only experience with BiliBili so far was Warm Snow - which is a great game - and I have to say so far I’m pretty impressed with the quality this company offers. Eastern Exorcist is a great fast-paced action-packed game but it isn’t too deep, nothing near Castlevania standards. There are some Items you get after defeating certain enemies and abilities you get for completing challenges. Challenges are specific stages you can complete using a shrine ( a mechanism similar to Dark souls…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eastern Exorcist works with some good concepts and has beautiful visuals. Unfortunately, the game becomes boring and repetitive very early, in my opinion. The combat system does not have much variation, and it's, basically, consisted of pressing the attack button over and over again, like a poor hack n' slash combat design system.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First hour was a bit jank and slow especially since they're a bit heavy on the tutorial stage in the first part. But honestly after giving it an honest go it's a fun charming little romp. It's not the most polished thing ever, particularly with some awkward translations and strange keyboard mapping (defo use controller) but once you're into the fray it's pretty slick and feels good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looks decent. Will face stiff competition for my money though as Metroidvania is probably the only genre even more oversaturated than Soulslikes these days. At first I thought it was a sequel to the game Eastern Exorcist, but different developers it seems.
neutral · AI labelView post →Games trash. 30 minutes tutorial. Never even made it to the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful game with great boos fights, normal enemies are not much of a challenge, but once you get to bossess you will have to put up a real fight. The game might seem kinda of short, but do not forget, there is a second story with different character and new abilities and moves to play with. There are some problems with the translation (especially subtitles are all over the place) but nothing much that would deter from enjoying the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As expected from the name already and the fact it's a cheap China game, well it is in fact a cheap China game. There is no real value in playing this, UNLESS you really dig the story for some reason. Maybe you're a total China nerd and love everything Chinese. And even THEN ... I wouldn't. The developer studio cannot be found online it seems, it's their first title (on Steam) anyway. The name of the game is still in Chinese next to the "Buy" button. So, what DO you get? - A story about…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not my type of game, it seems put together cheaply. I really wanted to give it a try but this game is just bad. bosses are difficult because they take forever to damage but I could clear them without getting hit easily, so not very difficult. the combat had some promise but didn't feel like it was natural and I couldn't change the buttons enough to make the game feel right to me. and I didn't really understand the story, like I am smart enough to get it but I didn't care about it at…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay is very unpolished, but everything else about the game is really good for the most part. I love the spells and abilities. The narrative and world is really interesting and well done. I love the way the tell the story with the traditional chinese style with the demons and the general cutscenes that game has. I would recommend playing this game on casual because the gameplay is not that great, but experiencing the narrative is worth the couple hours of going through it without having…
