Players praise the strong start and classic RPG feel but note the second half loses momentum. [1][2][3][4] Many reviewers say the game feels rushed or unfinished, especially in later acts. [5][6][7][8] Some players recommend it on sale for fans of isometric CRPGs despite its flaws. [2][9][10][11]

Encased starts strong, with an intriguing setting, solid writing, and satisfying RPG mechanics. The early and mid-game offer great exploration and roleplay opportunities. However, the second half quickly loses momentum. The pacing becomes sluggish, content feels repetitive, and it seems like the game was rushed to completion. I really wanted to like this, but it's basically an unfinished product. From what I've seen, the devs were whacked by an ongoing barrage of COVID aftermath, publisher meddling, and then the Russian economic lockout; I suspect all the external pressure led to a lot of core content in the game not being finished as they shipped to recoup losses before being shuttered. - In terms of actual gameplay, it's generally …

"Encased" is a game with huge potential - albeit not fully realized. It lacks overall cohesion and polish, especially in terms of combat balance and system depth. Yet, it offers so many strong and memorable elements that my overall experience remained positive. I have not looked into the developers background, but according to Steam, this is their only project. If this is indeed their debut, they have my respect. …

They just don't make games like these anymore. And, sadly, Dark Crystal games won't get the chance to follow-up with a sequel, as they dissolved after the release of Encased. So they REALLY don't make games like this anymore.... Which is a crying shame, honestly, as Encased, while imperfect, is still an amazing CRPG and absolutely worth your time and money. As a long time CRPG player - having played the original …

The game starts very strong. The latter half does fall off, but if you're a fan of the genre, I'd say that spending $30 for 50+ hours of 'starts strong, ends poorly' is probably a winning bargain. I know that's not the most crazy over the top review, but come on. It's an isometric CRPG released in 2020, if you're this deep in the reviews, just put it on your wishlist and get it on sale.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was rushed out or abandoned. The prologue and 1st act were pretty good, but the rest of the game is bad. When the world map opens up, I got excited about visiting all the new towns and doing their quests, etc. However, those new towns are barren maps with almost no content beyond talking to their leader for 1-2 quests. The companions are threadbare, with almost no dialogue or interactions. They don't even get a conclusion in the ending slideshow. The "climactic" ending involved…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have now reached Act 2 and completely agree with the other reviews - the game was rushed and abandoned. There's just nothing here. Act 1 had loads of explorable areas and side quests, then in Act 2 it's the opposite. Hardly any locations on the map, a handful of quests, a "city" with 3-4 NPCs in the entire area. I really enjoyed Act 1 but given how lacklustre Act 2 is I can't recommend the game. Play Fallout 1/2, or Wasteland 2/3 instead. What a shame.

neutral · AI labelView post →I wish I could recommend this game, but sadly I can't. The games start strong, with good rpg elements, and lot of intersting mysteries. The gameplay itself is also feels good, and different faction and characters are introduced woth their own goals. And then you slowly recognize, that everything is shallow, and most likely the creators lacked the creative talent and/or time to reach the potential the game has. Since you can't solve what anomalies are, you get no lore to be excited about,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Go play BG3, Pathfinder, Roguetrader, Chaos Gate, Trouble Shooter, Disco Elysium, Wasteland Series, Shadowrun Series, and countless others before this. This being said, I got this for 4$ and it was ok for that pricepoint. In a nutshell: - The tech, graphics and voice overs are there. This could have been a great RPG in the genre. - The writing was decent, world building was fine, although it desperately rips off fallout. - The balance is just plain bad and game design is amateurish. Full of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to really like this game, but half-way through the game the bottom kinda falls out. It's a single-player fallout-type rpg, and a pretty good one. Story is that a dome appeared one day out of nowhere and your character (for whatever reason) is chosen to be one of the lucky ones to explore it. You can't leave the dome (you die) and then some stuff happens. The dialogue is pretty good but while there's a very linear feel with an implied imperative to do something at the beginning, after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fallout 3 "as it should be". You actually need to read dialogues, remember npcs, observe environment, think about solutions, no quest markers, only notes. First half of game being really challenging, many fights almost impossible - sneak is often only solution, then maybe come back later with bigger gun to gain XP from enemies (and remember when you did not clear it yet :D ). In second half difficulty kinda broke, character got too strong, enemies not scaling properly - sneak changed to "go…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game starts out really well (if you're looking for old Fallout-style game play), with an interesting story and great pacing. But once you move out of the first act it becomes very clear the game is completely unfinished. A real shame. If you can get it very cheaply, i'd get it just for how satisfying the first part is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It started so interesting and engaging that the non-existing ending is extremely disappointing. I really like the history and outcome of the games i play, that i may replay it to relive the prologue and first chapter, but thats it, just the journey. Its not an exaggeration, this game doesnt have a proper ending. You may still buy it on a good deal if you want to give it a go. I also believe the leveling system and combat is alright.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this game felt like eating hospital food. It was functional, but oh-so-very bland. While I appreciate the unique universe and mystery associated with the setting, the devs definitely dropped the ball after the first act, with an open world that felt small, perhaps miniscule when compared to the attention to detail displayed during the opening sequence. Mechanics and abilities, while serviceable, feel dull, unbalanced, and without much utility even at the hardest difficulty level.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Encased – A Great RPG Held Together by Duct Tape (But Still Worth Playing) I just finished Encased on Steam, and overall I had a great time with it. The game offers amazing character customization, fun gameplay mechanics, and an interesting story centered around an anomalous zone. It strongly reminded me of games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., though Encased feels much lighter in tone, gameplay, and even overall optimism. The world is still dangerous throughout, with a solid faction system, reputation…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to love this game. I can tell there was a lot heart put into it but I cant recommend it in good faith. The game's missions consistently break, my worst ones was the quest where you place the beacons, I kept having to reload a save to get the beacon placements to count. The biggest kicker (which made me quit the game entirely) was the end of act 2's mission when the "Emulator Project" would not start because the game didn't realize I had completed all the required quests in order…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty great game in my humble opinion. Some complain about tactics, now sure why, may they are comparing to XCom or BG, no idea. Erros translating, well I'm not a main english speaker concerned with proper english, so I didnt really notice any, As it is such an overall nice game, I played for many hours, and as I do with many games I enjoy, even prolonged it on purpose. Stealing unnoticed? Check. Killing because you can? Check. Having Sx in a vent with a stranger? Check. Dying to some weird…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game gets better and better as you play. Stealth and solo play was one of the best in crpgs. You can solo stealth kill everyone and steal your way to the end. Also music is so good. I had great time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An unfinished game abandoned by its developers, replete with a trailer that straight up lies to you about certain playstyles (it is not possible, as advertised, to complete the game being completely 'unknown'). It picks an aesthetic/style, then never bothers to properly utilize or lean into it: this game could genuinely be set in any age/era and it would be completely irrelevant. There is no flavour to be found here. No flash. No spark. Not even a pan.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been patiently plugging along at this one for a while now, trying to get all the juice out of it. I ran into a game breaking bug late in the second act, unfortunately. There were a few people I found who reported the same bug; essentially, in a given quest, you need to watch some surveillance cameras in two locations, and send emails to your supervisor after having done so. In one location, the email option appears immediately; in the other, folks are saying "Well, I was stuck till I'd…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Act I is a a lot of fun, although the combat is balanced terribly in this game. Act II, however, is just huge empty spaces you have to traverse in order to complete a bunch of boring fetch quests. The instant drop in quality as soon as you reach the City is astonishing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really interesting mix of ideas from Fallout, STALKER, and Gothic. As many mention, the game starts really strong. The prologue and first act encase you in a retro-futuristic 70s atmosphere with an intriguing story. Unfortunately, the other half of the game is unfinished and rushed. Pacing dives down like under a gravity anomaly. I'm not sure if the developer company is even alive de facto. Their site and all social media accounts are long dead by now. Still, the first half of the game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to enjoy this game, but it's just a bit incomplete and buggy. For example, crafting items is supposed to have a requirement, but it seems not to be implemented. I've also had the game lock up. For me, even if I played through these problems, it has some design choices I don't like. A stat that boosts experience gain, a stat that increases perk points per level, and gear that increases skill levels. I don't like the play patterns these choices incentivize. Additionally,…

I REALLY tried to play this game to its end i really really tried but after hour 20 ish it just unbearably boring, this 87 hours took me several months and i just simply cannot do it anymore this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Encased is disappointing because if this game had been given just a little bit more funding and time in the oven, it could have been excellent. I wanted to like this game so much. On the surface, it's right up my alley - a modern(ish) crpg set in a mid-apocalyptic retro sci-fi setting. The bones are everything I thought I would want in a game. Instead, the execution falls very flat in some really subtle ways. From inconsistent voice acting, to typos in the text itself, to weird hiccups…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As others have posted here, it's a good enough game if you enjoy sandbox RPGs. After the first few hours of the game, a large event occurs. After that event, the game proper begins and you are pointed towards...nothing. Other than the fact that some kind of big storm has swept through the dome, there's no real motivation to do much of anything. Sure, there's a lot to explore and you could make an argument that you can unfold your own story. However, for me personally, I don't have a lot of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok, so this is a not recommend. I bought this shortly after release, which was a bad move as it then turned out to not be properly finished, though technically there is an ending. Apparently the quality apparently plummets after the first act, and it switches from a character/story heavy game to a clunky and largely empty turn based combat game. I don't like unfinished products and stories so I was unmotivated to actually play it after I heard that. I eventually decided I may as well…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I personally don't care for the game but it's a pretty good RPG. The main issue I have is I'm more of XCOM, WarTales, Battle Brothers TBS player. This is heavy RPG and light tactical combat. I do way, way for running around and chatting then I do room clearing. The game is well made, just not for me. If you are more into the RPG side of things, grab it. It's pretty cheap on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has a fun sense of humor, and an intersting take on a Post-Apocalyptic setting, and is in general a good modern version of classic isometric style rpg's. It's not loaded down with dlc, there are some mods for it, and you can easily ad your own portraits for your character if you wish, though it's got decent portraits by default. I would highly recommend this game, bearing in mine that it does have some adult content (some parts are a bit graphic with violence, and some strong language)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's probably a 2.4 out of 5... so very close to a thumbs up. I really wanted to like this game. The atmosphere was solid. Level design was interesting. Characters were pretty cool and seemed to be unique. I love the sci fi magic+guns vibe. Combat was turn based and fun. The action point system was done well in this game, providing a lot of different options in combat that felt fresh. All the interesting weapon and skill abilities... . But I gave this a negative review. So let's get to…

Best way to describe it is Wasteland 2 combat but without any of the faults W2 has. + The first half of the game is very good and made me invested…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't play much into depth, so shortly what I disliked: - Combat: After the third encounter it feels just too boring. Simply gun your way through without any tactics, positioning or selecting the proper gear/magic. - Interaction with the world: Look into every trash bin to find literally what? You got it, more "trash". What else would you expect? - NPCs: Feel just too boring. You wouldn't want to care less about them. - Character creation: If I knew what spec is doing what, how it could…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the game in EA and let it sit for a long time. I came back to it and got through about 1/2 of Act 2. It became a slog, and I noticed what others have said about the story falling off. It's a shame because I really wanted to finish this game, but it just became too disappointing story-wise. It began strong and finished Act I strong-but petered out. At $3.00 it's not a bad deal; you'll get 20 hours of fun out of it. Just be ready to drop it when it gets lame.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I quite enjoyed this game. Set in a desert where an unknown alien anomaly has created a self contained dome tens of kilometers wide where dangers await. Either the 1972 Russian science fiction novel "Roadside Picnic" or the more recent 2014 "Annihilation" by Jeff VanderMeer will give you a good feel for the setting (There are movies based on each), You start as one of a member of one of five factions with various responsibilities and privileges to explore. Blacks - the military. Whites -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a really good, well-written edgy isometric RPG. One of the best-written and conceived I've ever played, in fact. The skill system is janky and companions are - unfortunately - literally not worth it at all. Not only are they relatively shallow with very limited dialogue (on par with the original Baldur's Gate rather than BG2 or BG3), their skill progression is hot poop on toast and inconsistently applied to skill checks. I ended up finishing the game with a solo build (built around…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried to get into the game and gave it a chance but after 8 hours I had enough. The game premise is interesting with all the colored factions, but an event inside the game soon deletes that and new factions rise before I could be able to explore the original world. Welp, does not matter. The main reason I couldnt play anymore is that the combat is really basic and boring, in the end it is just positioning and clicking one attack ability on the enemy. And the screen is absolutely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a lot of things I absolutely adore about this game, using the weird science to have a smaller scale disaster create a far more contained post-apoclalyptic setting with a very recent apocalypse is very novel for the genre, and it wears its influence of Fallout and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on it's sleeve. The people feel very authentic to the time period they are in despite the alternate history, the art is amazing, and the leveling and character building is very fun. UI is well done and mechanics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended for fans of turn-based tactics and isometric RPGs. Plays pretty similarly to the Wasteland series which I would also recommend. Good story, variety of weapons, skills, character builds, difficulty settings, companions. Some voice acting but lots of unvoiced dialogue and narrative. Focus on exploration, variety of ways to overcome some problems/quests but a lack of direction makes coming back to it difficult as it is easy to lose track of what you need to do, if you ever knew in the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a great game! I was sitting on this for almost a year. I forgot I bought this little gem on sale and forgot to add to my TRY SOON list. Well, I must say I was underestimating this title. I just thought it was going to be another generic clone of the games we love to play in the vein of top down tactics. I very much recommend this title. Plus the game isn't against you just having fun with the title. Break it open and hack your way to victory. Or play it straight up. I always…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spoilers ahead. - The game is too slow for my liking, combat is fairly 1 dimensional & there's far too much looting required even when considering my trash panda ways. The story isn't gripping, the quests are extremely repetitive & involve you returning to POIs you've probably already fully explored just to sort a fetch quest or revisit a computer you've already used just to use it again for a different reason. This led to me getting bored and killing main characters/quest givers that gave…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty and not many bugs. Choiches matter in the shiort-term which is nice even if it may not be ideal. Various fun character builds are not that hard to set up and some get fun benefits, like on a low-iq build, you get called a "cave man" and given a baton as your starter weapon. Companions are fine, the AI is okay. Game overal is pretty solid, but it may not hold up for more than a single playthrough depending on how much you explore the first time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tonight is Eagles preseason football, getting back into #Encased, and a sleeping doggie laying on me. After a great game day, I’d say this is a pretty damn good night. 🦅🎮🐶
positive · AI labelView post →translation errors in syntax and grammar, pacing issues, imbalanced systems, the hardest difficulty was too easy even without using stealth. The lore is great but that's about it. Not even sure how to approach how disappointing the ending is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Encased really leans into its narrative depth, so your point about carefully reading the dialogue is spot on. The game is designed to reward players who pay attention choices often ripple into unexpected consequences, and missing a detail can lock you out of certain quest paths. I’d say that’s part of its charm: it feels like a true old-school RPG where your decisions matter, but it also means you need patience and focus. If you enjoyed the story driven aspect on day one, you’ll likely find…

After playing another 30 hours "i dont know why" this could have been a good game but its BORING it needed more interaction every fight boiled down to just use basic attack because more of the abilities dont really do anything. The story starts off interesting but by the end of act 2 it falls off luckly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Huge fan of old CRPGs. Encased is one of those games that makes me say, “there it is… right there… that could’ve been something special.” Because the foundation? It’s really strong. The Dome setting is genuinely cool and new, with mystery baked into everything. The RPG system has enough skill checks to make you feel like your character actually exists in the world instead of just passing through it. But then… the polish just isn’t there. The still art feels oddly childish at times, if it…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is just this side of a thumbs up. There are more positives than negatives. Overall, the story and writing are pretty good. The concept borrows heavily from Roadside Picnic (there is even a location named after it in the game) which the Stalker series is lifted from. The gameplay is your typical CRPG style. The game is not too hard as long as you don't play a hyper specialized build. People complaining about their self insert ninja melee build with social anxiety (there is a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't say this is average per-se, it mostly feels completely unpolished and unfinished. Every facet feels like it's half implemented. Combat is completely unbalanced, you'll be frequently outnumbered and out gunned. You'll be pecking away at a small rat with your pea shooter while it hits you like a sledgehammer. It's not fun at all. I ended up having to cheat to even get through a couple of extremely early mission fights, this killed my enthusiasm more than anything else. You might…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing. The story DOES take a bit to get moving, but once it does, it's first rate. The game is a love letter to Fallout and Wasteland, albeit with less satire and more sci-fi. It'll hook you fast.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like a more polished version of the classic fallout games but it leans more heavily into a sci-fi world with anomalies straight out of Stalker. I really enjoy it a lot for this type of game, actually more-so than Wasteland 3 as it has a lot more polish and charm. The combat is fine, the story is interesting, the progression feels impactful and rewarding, and there are the hidden secrets and cool things to find for completionists. 90% of the dialogue in the game is even voiced by above…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent, and has surpassed my expectations greatly. I had this game on wishlist for a while, and at 3$ this is the best deal of the summer sale of 2025. Seriously, as far as Fallout clones, I've played plenty, and none delivered the depth, the amount of characters and skills that interact with the game world so well. The screenshots don't do justice to the game. It has partial voice narration, it has free-form exploration with events, you can play as one of 5 "wings/factions" in game, for a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of very few games that can be compared to Fallout 2. Its most important and impressive strength is the excellent world building and writing as well as its quest design. It is fascinating to explore the world, its factions, characters, locations and quests. Character creation, talents, perks, skills and so on work rather well. The complexity is comparable to Fallout and heavily inspired by it without being derivative. Quite a few quests use non-combat skills. Graphics are quite…
