Players praise the game's emotional story and beautiful pixel art. [1][2][3] Some find the puzzles simple but enjoyable, with a skip option. [4][5][6] A few reviewers criticize the dialogue as excessive and the story as convoluted. [7][8][9]

Cruel and unusual third act The game has good writing and interesting enough of a narrative hook, breadcrumbing you between each of the simple but solid puzzles for the first 2/3rds of the game. Unfortunately, reaching the 7th area is the game's narrative death sentence. It all goes downhill from there, becoming both confusing even if you understand what's going on, and unnecessarily cruel with no way to change the …

Short 2D puzzle platformer with captivating story and visually appealing pixel graphics. The game takes about 4 hours to beat under normal circumstances, however, you can skip all the puzzles and dialogue so in theory it can be beaten in a few minutes including achievements.

I played this on mobile years ago and decided to revisit it on Steam. The music, pixel art, melancholic atmosphere, and clever puzzles are fantastic. The story is emotional, thought-provoking, and unforgettable. Experiencing Clover's journey again was just as impactful as the first time. Few games have stayed with me the way this one has. A true masterpiece 10/10

A maze of emotions built with simple elegance. Even after you get out, it stays with you.

81% of the 187 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Evan's Remains. The complaint that keeps coming up: dialogue is too long and wordy. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

In January, I played through Evan's Remains. In February, I had time to beat both Life is Strange and Celeste. March was the turn of Neva.

neutral · AI labelView post →The story gets a bit convoluted and the number of twists at the end got slightly out of hand but in the heart of it, this is a story of a brother trying to save his sister from dying whatever it takes. And during this story, the main question being asked was would you give someone a happy ending even if you knew that ending was a fabricated lie? And does a happy ending retain it's meaning if the one getting it doesn't know that it's a lie? The story is good and the puzzles took just the right…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Evan's Remains is a short and small Indie game. It combines logic puzzle platformer with a visual novel styled story. Usually puzzle games with a narrative do it just to have it (like collateral or accessory) and the other way around too, narrative games with baby level easy puzzles that do not grow in difficulty. This game on the other hand, tried to give both enough attention, but sadly both sides fell a bit short. The puzzles are easy and grow a bit frustrating by the end. Nothing hard…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Evan's Remains is a 2D puzzle visual novel game where you play with you need to progress the story, and solve puzzles as Dysis in order to find Evan. The concept of the puzzles is quite interesting, but there are only a couple of them spread out during the boring dialogue. The story is pretty average, but the artwork is quite nice. If you are looking for a puzzle-oriented game, I don't recommend this Evan's Remains. 5/10.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I could I would give this a neutral rating. The puzzles are mostly quite simple with some using misdirection to spice things up. The story feels like it's missing something but at the same time it's overly complicated. I did some looking ,as far as I can find I didn't miss anything storywise. The price isn't bad. The pixel art is very good with one ore two small weird bits. Why I chose negative ulitmately comes down to " Do I feel like I wasted my time playing this?". Yes. You on the…

Had a lot of fun just casually playing Tekken and hearing how badly chat could mess up the TTS. Evan's Remains was a neato game! Raided into @ritsuwu.bsky.social afterwards who was playing Sea of Stars
positive · AI labelView post →It's a strange but beautiful game. It's not perfect, and I don't feel like everything quite fitted together in my mind at the end. But I found the central characters compelling, and it has caused me to think about what's important in life.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Evan's Remains is a tough story forcing us to face some really puzzling questions. It's a simple puzzle platformer that could be finished in one sitting, but has a lot of depth. I didn't know what to expect going in but I was really glad that I played it. The puzzles are fairly simple, such that if you don't see the solution, you can try several different solutions and find what works for you. Saying more about Evan's Remains would spoil the surprises, so you should buy it and find out for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The puzzles are just okay. A straightforward mechanism that just takes a bit of trial and error to figure out each level. That being said, I think this game is more of a story game with a puzzle than the other way around. Unfortunately, the story is quite lacking. The conclusion of the mystery falls extremely flat compared to the buildup. I'd also note that it's unusually cruel? It would've been just a boring conclusion had there not been that last plot twist of what Andrea did to Clover .…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Forgettable game with beautiful graphics and frictionless puzzle gameplay the story sort of pissed me off because its trying to be emotional but it was just annoying how it justified everything in the end
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst games I've ever played. Puzzle platfoming parts are quite decent. A bland, lite and not deadly version of Celeste and Sunblaze. Not on same level, of course. But the problem is that more of 3/4 of the game are dialogues. And not good dialogues. It's a stereotyped, delusional and convoluted plot about conspiracy theories and fight against the big company. Something that a second grader could write. I don't understand how it can have a so high metascore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Eventually you realize that 'later' is an excuse, it doesn't exist." Got this game because I wanted to know what happened to Evan. The story was alright. It didn't make much sense at the end, but I guess it served its purpose. The puzzles were quite good, and skippable if you couldn't solve it and couldn't be bothered to check YouTube (like me. I was only there for Evan). It was short and (bitter)sweet. Wished there was an option to make the dialogues go quicker for fast readers. Not a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →90% dialogue 10% game. This would be better as a book. The story was cool but inconsistent and there were so many themes it was very incoherent. 0 backstory on the Company or what Evan + Andre plan to do. You can't just make us sit though 2 hours of dialogue and not even bother to finish the story. The animation and art is really cool but this was boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →1. Evan's Remains (multiplatform, 2020, finished on 1/4/2025) Love how creative this game is. The puzzles remind me a bit of the Klonoa GBA games, and the spritework's honestly really gorgeous! I feel like I can't say much about the story without giving too much away though ;v;
positive · AI labelView post →Took about 3 hrs to beat (on a flight so time isn't reflected here). Really nice puzzle mechanic - gets non-trivial quickly, and has mechanics that stack in interesting ways, but never too frustrating. My god, the story is OK, but the dialogue is just endless. They could have told it subtly, but absolutely nothing is left to the imagination when 3 more lines of dialogue will do. I have played several visual novels, but when they're this quality of writing I tend to tap out - only persevered…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring gameplay boring story... nice pixel art. But nothing more.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game made me cry... In a good way Evans Remains is a very interesting story, one that did not go the way I thought it would storywise... Its a beautiful story, with a very interesting plot. First off, the puzzles are genuinely difficult with having to stop and think about what you are doing. What adds to that is the hidden secrets that you find and the things you learn as you continue this game. I dont want to spoil anything so I will just say this. I love a good twist and I know…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Easy recommendation! 7.5/10 A mysterious island full of secrets. The soundtrack and visuals blend perfectly with the story. Simple puzzles and a short experience. If you enjoyed FEZ, you’ll likely enjoy this. ...that I realized... ...that I never really had anything. Plays perfectly on Steam Deck and controller — no issues. Time to 100%: ~4–5 hours
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While a passable puzzle platformer, the story here is just too convoluted to be worth experiencing. Its reveals all twist up into a mess starting halfway through the game, leading to a confusing, lackluster finale that overall I just can't recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a Puzzle Platformer: 7/10 As a Visual Novel: 5/10 If you aren't into puzzle platformers, I'm not super confident this is for you. If you are, this game has some fun challenges and incredible artwork/sound design. I knew I wasn't into puzzle platformers going into this, moreso interested in a good story. There were reviews mentioning the puzzles could be skipped anytime, and that the story was good, so I gave this a shot. Judging the story based solely on the first half of the game, I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A narratively ambitious, dialogue-heavy puzzle platformer that works pretty well for the first two hours, before the story goes into a nose-dive and crashes in an awe-inspiring fireball of cynicism and pretentiousness.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Over the years, I’ve accumulated a lot of games—most of which remain unplayed or barely touched. So, I decided to start picking games at random, playing them, and writing reviews. Evan’s Remains was the first one that came up. I went into the game completely blind. The only thing I checked beforehand was HowLongToBeat, since I didn’t have much time to spend on a game today. The 3–3.5 hour estimate seemed perfect for a Saturday afternoon. The Good The game opens with an intriguing narrative…

negative · AI labelView post →I wanted to like this game, but it ended up being a bit of a letdown even though I retried it multiple times. It is advertised as a puzzle game, but out of the 4hs I played, I only spent -barely- 1h on the puzzles. The plot wasn't very interesting and the puzzles were a bit too easy for me. Luckily, you have an option to fastforward the dialogues or even skip the puzzles, depending on what you like about the game. The achievements are easy to get and the art style is pretty cute. It…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had no Idea the story would get so emotional and deep. The story definitely exceeded my expectations. It made me tear up several times. I loved the way the revelations and messages and twist and the ending were handled. A Perfect story and ending forstaying grounded and giving us a very morally grey perspective on what is right and wrong under already bad circumstances. I didn't expect that weight of philosophical dilemas at the end. Most games do not turn out to have such a Non-grand and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I want to say right off the bat, I did enjoy this game! The gameplay was absolutely amazing and incredibly enjoyable and unique. The pixel art was stunning and richly detailed, with very fluid animations! And for these two things alone I would definitely recommend the game! I do have some mixed feelings with the plot, though, specifically the ending. Most of the story was well-written and the mystery was very engaging but I felt like some of the answers it gave just felt like too big of a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First two thirds of the game promise a lot of great things only to piss you off with the finale. While there is some interesting conversation that can come from playing this game, I hated the way the game wrapped up. It felt like the writers wrote themselves into a corner and instead of trying to come up with a beautiful, meaningful ending, they put a plot twist that served no purpose other than to resolve the outstanding questions the players have. I don’t understand why because they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The puzzles are pretty simple and leaning on the side of boring but the story is really good. Worth picking up on sale perhaps.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great story, charming graphics and soundtrack, and just enough challenge in the puzzles to be engaging
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is more a story than an actual puzzle game. So much dialog that I can't even bring myself to finish the game. The times when it is actually a puzzle platformer, the graphics are very cute and there is pretty interesting mechanics. But Over an hour of game play and barely any puzzles, even with speed skipping the dialog after a while.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a gem! This puzzle-platformer mainly made by one person has gorgeous pixel art with a story that brought tears to my eyes. Most puzzles are very easy with just a few being quite complicated, but you can even skip them as the main focus is clearly the story that makes this game fall more into the visual novel genre in my opinion. I was slightly frustrated with the hitboxes of some platforms that seemed sometimes wider than what I perceived but that's about it when it comes to cons in this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review contains spoilers. I would like to start off with the things that I liked about this game. The obvious standout is the art, which to me felt like a Celeste foreground with a Rabbit & Steel background. In particular, the flower area is beautiful. The puzzles are about average, but I did quite like jumping on the bouncepads. They're kind of strange in that there's a pause before you bounce, but I found that pretty satisfying. Fundamentally, almost every puzzle came down to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was cute and fun till the end. The ending was a little disappointing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a fun puzzle platformer. The puzzles are challenging enough to be interesting but don't require pixel-perfect jumps or anything like that and the story is engaging and interesting if a bit convoluted.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game 34: Evan's Remains This was a neat puzzle platformer. The puzzles were tricky but not irritatingly so. And it a great story with some heavy subject matter. It's dirt cheap so it's recommend it to to people who like platformers and puzzles without combat. Only took like 4 hours.
positive · AI labelView post →Good story. Basic puzzles. Bad after credits scene, not worth the wait. And two stupid achievements. They add nothing related to the story. I recommend playing for the story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Evan's Remains is unfortunately 75% dialogue and 25% gameplay. The puzzle elements were interesting but every time you get into a flow of solving them, you are forced to engage in convoluted conversation. There's a good game in here somewhere but it's hiding behind a very bland and bloated story.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game lets you skip every puzzle, which is the most enjoyable part, but there weren't enough of them. the unskippable dialogue is poorly written, and the story insists upon its profundity entirely too much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Puzzle concept is decent, but the game is too short to make any complex puzzles out of the concepts. I don't expect anyone to get the "get stuck for 15 minutes" achievement by accident. The story however, ooooh boy is it bad. Offensively bad. Feels like it hates people who pay attention to story telling, and actively makes you feel bad for playing the game. I came back months after finishing the game because just seeing this game on my library annoyed me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Evan's remains is a stunning experience with amazing visuals and an ost that does wonders. Well worth the cheap entry cost and low play time just for those two parts alone. The gameplay is fine, the puzzle have good concepts but get a bit repetitive. The story is good, but is hard to talk about without ruining it, and considering how good the rest of the experience is I would reccomend just giving the game a try and forming your own opinion on the story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short game with light puzzles. Makes me proud to be argentinian 😎 I don't think that anyone is gonna have a hard time solving the puzzles. That's a good thing because it let's you focus on the story. Be prepared to experience something closer to a visual novel. Fun and a little thought provoking. Also, The visual style is gorgeous.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What drew me in here, and what probably will for a lot of others, is the style and presentation of Evan's Remains. It's clearly a triumph creatively and artistically - especially as the work of primarily a single developer, with quite a scant credits list of collaborators. The pixel art of the game in motion is among some of the best I've seen from an indie game, achieving both incredible aesthetics while remaining clean and readable for gameplay. The lighting, effects and animation on top of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →> Very short puzzle game > Heavy on the narrative > An ending where not everybody would be satisfied (Though, I was cuz I'm a sucker for bittersweet endings) > Great characters > Cozy OST that somewhat comforts you as you go deeper in the story > Replayable but would only do when nostalgia hits me > A bang for your buck (especially on discounts) Blind play is the best way to get the most of it!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's... okay? It's an unambitious puzzle-platformer grafted onto a visual novel with a hokey and contrived narrative. There's a hint of a thematic relationship between these two parts, which might have elevated the experience and justified the narrative contrivances, but in the end this never pays off. The pleasant pixel art and low-friction puzzles make for an inoffensive way to spend a couple hours.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is more story focused than gameplay focused, and that's a good thing for what this story is trying to tell. The ending is incredibly bittersweet, and the twist was completly not expected, but makes a lot of sense for it to be that way. The reviews saying the twist was "poorly done" or "took away from the rest of the story" just want a feel good game, and not a good story.
