What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 271 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (5,745 of 7,497 positive).
Some reviewers note that the game has limited build variety and balance issues, with one optimal strategy dominating. [1][2][3][4] Several players express disappointment that the full game adds little new content compared to the demo. [5][2][3]

This isn't a bad game, but I feel like I've already seen pretty much everything it has to offer already, so its hard to recommend. Essentially the entire game is only one level which you play over and over again at increasing difficulties. The difficulty is increased by enemies gaining buffs while you suffer debuffs, but the enemies themselves, level, and boss fights don't really change. At higher difficulties, …

It's sweet, charming, and cute. And also very flat -- in successful runs you generally end up with one of the three working builds, and you grab the same upgrades again and again. So while I enjoyed the first couple of runs, I quickly got bored. Enemy and bioma variery are also sorely lacking. This game will become good when it has WAY more content. Thumbs up in the hopes that it does.

Steam only shows about 6.8 hours for me, but I have about 30+ hours played offline on trains and planes on my Steam Deck. This is the game I've been waiting for since I first played Vampire Survivors. I don't know how many runs I've done, and my reaction time isn't what it was in my 20s and early 30s, but I never feel like the game is unfair. Definitely a "one more run" game. There are so many different builds to …

Played a TON of the demo, and while I do like the content added in the full game, I do feel like there is basically only one path to take for every run with all other evolutions feeling very weak. Big bulky physical builds need a small nerf and all other evolutions (ranged, charm, pacifist/herbivore) should get buffs and additional content first.

76% of the 271 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Everything is Crab: The Animal Evolution Roguelite. The complaint that keeps coming up: lack of content and variety. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was fun, until you realize every map is the same....creatures same....effective critical buildout same.... Still has potential, it was cheap, not a total loss. But it needs more variatiy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the demo! And I really like this game. But I expected full game to be more than the demo, not the same exact thing. Evolution options blend together. Biomes feel very similar and nothing stops you really from hopping from one to another. Builds feel very similar, it is either melee build or ranged build. I kinda expected that I could be more specialized for water or something. Ah there is also ally build, but it feels worse than it should. Also there is little to no variety.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a pretty cool concept but it lacks content. You'll see most upgrades in a single run and there are only 3 real "builds". A bit concerning there is paid DLC on the roadmap while the game is in need of so much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I reviewed Everything is Crab. A fun game with a brilliant concept, trapped in the shadow of its own immense potential. Read here: www.thejimquisition.com/post/everyth...
neutral · AI labelView post →I wanna say it's good. I was addicted to the demo. And am addicted to the full game currently. But currently I am at Pressure 11, and I feel like that addiction is simply an addiction. I've been reading other reviews in between "runs" (going insane at the total dissolution of the already fragile game balance post-Pressure 10), and I see several common valid criticisms shared among both positive and negative reviews; very valid opinions, mostly, I'd say. What those are, I'll get to in a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The expression "Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" doesn't apply here. This game is "Wide as a puddle, deep as a puddle" at best. After 5-10 runs you'll quickly realize they all feel more or less the same. There aren't unique builds. Nothing new or interesting happens. No new biomes unlock. The "progression" between runs doesn't change the game in a meaningful way. Add to that, as you move up difficulty tiers, the game gets "harder" by making everything worse (less upgrades, slower…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun "pick from 3 options" roguelite. Like many others, I bought it because NL played it. I am a sheep.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's definitely fun and imaginative, but after a few runs with each different playstyle, it gets pretty boring. There's not enough to do for all the runs to end up feeling basically the same
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has potential but at its current point it feels more like an early access game. Some have already pointed this out, but it’s a little strange that a DLC is on the roadmap even though the main game needs more work. Maybe get this game later if it got updated a lot or if there’s a large sale. I want this game to be good, but it’s not there yet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely fantastic core mechanic, which evolves Vampire Survivor's formula in a satisfying and addictive way. Cute art style, decent sound effects/music. The problem is, the game doesn't actually deliver on its core fantasy. Every run you pick the same few evolutions, with only 3 or 4 distinctly different playstyles (all of which want much of the same bonuses.) Almost never do you end up building anything resembling a real animal, since there is more synergy between random upgrades than…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun and has a really interesting concept, but to me it severly lacks variety. By the end of an hour play time, you pretty much have seen everything. The map doesn't change, enemies don't change, nothing changes besides you getting few unlocks, different biomes might as well not exist and build variety is pretty meh. It could be something great with time but for now its just an underbaked game with great concept.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's as fun as the demo, which is a great thing. To be completely honest, I was expecting significantly more content than the demo had, but if you already played the demo, the game will get repetitive very quickly. There's not that much new stuff. Something else that bothered me is that the game was released as 1.0 with no Early Access tag, and still it has a lot of Early Access qualities to it (like obvious chunks of content written COMING SOON), which I think is misleading and not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's cute...and that's about the only positive thing I can say. There is a single map with the same repeating biomes that blur together. There are the same handful of enemies (who always have the same mutations) that repeat over and over. There are the same five bosses over and over. You can unlock different "stages" but it's the same thing, just harder difficulty levels (enemies hit harder, have more HP, etc). One thing that particularly annoys me is that the snow and desert biomes will cause…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is very fun. But the game needs more base content for replayability rather than just standard difficulty scaling. The game as it stands is fun, but there are builds that completely outshine others in terms of power scaling. There should be more evolution options, variety, balance and content in the base game before you release paid DLCs. The enemies with the turtle shell ability being completely invulnerable until they're already attacking basically make them an enemy to avoid completely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay, so after 43 hours and having gotten 80% of the game's checklist done, and having beaten Pressure 20, I finally feel qualified to make a review. I think this game's been so successful because of how intuitive the concept of evolution is even to people unfamiliar with the "roguelite" genre. Kill/find, eat, evolve. That's it. And while that makes the game accessible, it also makes it feel like the depth leaves a lot to be desired. Most importantly, you don't have to be a brickhouse and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Everything is Crab instantly nails the joyous, evolutionary absurdity of Spore mashed with a roguelite, delivering a wildly fun first few hours of stitching together bizarre creature builds. Unfortunately, the illusion breaks far too quickly as you realize you are locked into the same handful of viable evolutions each run, forcing even "new" playstyles to feel identical while dragging you through the exact same three uninspired biomes until novelty turns to utter frustration.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i tried demo for more than 6hrs. i keep waiting for the release. the moment its released, i immediately bought and feel so good for playing this good game. i really love this. i hope in the future there will be more deeper expansion, either dlc or free updates
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting game, it keeps you hooked for hours, so much so that you can't even refund. You even believe there are a thousand variations, it's a game about evolution, right? No... there's very little variation or content in this game. Essentially, each new level is the SAME, just a little harder. This game has huge potential, but it feels like I've been playing a demo; it's still raw, lacking in content, and lacking variety.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At its core Everything is crab is a good game, with a fun and satisfying gameplay loop that I personally am really enjoying. However, like many other reviews before have said, you hit a wall quickly with this game, and start to feel the lack of variety far too early in. The bosses, enemies, environmental interactions, and builds that exist are good but could handle to be fleshed out, and expanded upon. I think the free content expansions, not DLC, will really determine where this game…

neutral · AI labelView post →Update 6/26/2026: I tried out the "major update" and unfortunately it has the exact same problems. Not even like, shuffled around a little bit, just the same balance problems as before. The 1 HP a level doesn't mean anything because the final boss goes from 2-shotting you with no HP upgrades to now 2-shotting you with no HP upgrades so like... what was the point? Enemies do SO much damage and it's very hard to consistently dodge everything so you're just going to get hit sometimes and die if…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lacks the satisfaction of gradual progression necessary in roguelikes. You will get your fill fairly early on and there is not enough to incentivize more playthroughs.

neutral · AI labelView post →I remembering playing Spore when it first came out. I had so much fun with the unicellular stage, floating around, eating stuff and evolving. The rest of the wasn't so great. This game, however, is a blast from start to finish. You bop stuff with your head, or you don't. You eat and evolve, or you die. The bosses stress test your build. You want to be a gentle, nutrient packed cutie, you had better have some defenses to your name. Or just evolve into Godzilla, the choice is yours.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right now it's a 7/10 Needed more time in the oven, rushing to release was stupid. Animations are buggy. Enemy hitboxes are all over the place and not consistent. The boss arena has spots that will sometimes lock you in place. In the later parts of runs, enemies will focus on only you, literally every enemy will come from across the map just to attack you while they are being attacked themselves, it makes no sense other than devs inflating the difficulty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything is Crab released today for the PC and I am sooooo excited to play it when I get a chance :D This game might be for you if you like: 🦀Animal evolutions where you can choose unique combinations to survive 🦀125+ evolutions and specializations 🦀Crabs of course :o It also has a demo!
positive · AI labelView post →As of right now this game does not have nearly enough content to make it engaging long-term. It feels like doing the exact same thing over and over again. Even when I go out of my way to try and pick different perks and evolutions, the different combos don't really feel *meaningfully* different from each other and don't really impact gameplay as much as they should. It's a shame because the game definetely has potential, it just feels undercooked in it's current state. (Edit: I feel like it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cute concept, and fun at times but marred by painful difficulty and odd balancing. The game seems confused on what it wants to be or do, because the creature evolution sim aspects feel at odds, or at the very least conflicts with, the action roguelike aspects. For example; is there any logic to which creatures want you dead, like your evolutions or aspects (which would make it fall in line more with the self described Spore inspiration) or does it not matter and everything wants you dead…

positive · AI labelView post →Everything Is Crab is exactly what the title promises: everything will eventually become a crab, well, some version of a crab…or more often than not some eldritch abomination chimera of different animals that could still be mistaken for a crab if you are very very drunk (And the best thing is, after a run the game lets you save your “Crab” as a gif to share with your friends! Story Bonk things bevor they bonk you to 0 hp! Gameplay The gameplay revolves around, surprise!,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, it's still awesome but if you've put in a bunch of hours on the demo, it feels like there isn't a *ton* of new stuff. There still is new stuff, new evolutions, new challenges, new genetics. It's just that there seems to really just be the one optimal play method, which is to dump everything into Physical, Plating, and related upgrades but be sure to pick some prey traits. It doesn't really matter which attacks you pick, as each have their own strengths and weaknesses that sort of balance…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished the game on the highest difficulty (including all challenges). I love it! The game is a roguelike mix of spore and vampire surviors. Your goal is just to survive a run (~22min), either by killing the boss or really just surviving until the timer runs out. You eat food of different sources and level ups unlock evolutions for your creature, which also have synergies together. There are three main evolution paths: Damage/Tank, Social, and Pacifist. Though usually you will have a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game, and it is fun up until pressure 10. After that the stars sort of need to align in order to make real progress. Only a couple of stats end up mattering, so by extension only a couple mutations/evolutions really work. Sure you could spend the time to sweat it out, but at that point there are just... better games to spend time on.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute awesome graphics. First 4 runs are fun but later it is the same thing all over again. Building Ability is way weaker than building strenght. No story makes it more boring. Feels like another 50% of the game is missing\ Also as someone else said - making a new level by changing enemy HP multiplier from 1 to 1,2 is lazy. It is not a new level. And there are what, 15 "levels" in this game? I will not do the same thing 10 more times and also every time its going to be harder and tedious.…

neutral · AI labelView post →TL;DR Cool game with a lot of potential, but very unbalanced because it relies much more on RNG than skill. UPDATE 25 jun 2026 The devs are listening to feedback, and they fixed a minor amount of the problems. It's not enough to balance the game, but they are trying and I have faith they'll manage eventually ! I'm quite sad to have to write negative review about this game, but it is unfortunately not much fun after the first pressure levels and challenges are done. Many things feel unbalanced…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game that takes the best parts of Spore I had a lot of fun experimenting with different builds. The creature design and evolution system are fantastic, both for the player and for other species. The evolved creatures often look hilariously charming (: I especially enjoyed events/challenges like the one where all creatures had their ability and attack cooldowns drastically reduced. Some QoL improvements are needed: the animations for receiving evolutions, rerolling them, and upgrading…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really love this genre, and considering how few games like this exist, Everything is Crab stands out quite well thanks to its mechanics and core concept. Overall, I actually liked the game — so why the negative review? The problem is that in a game whose main feature is evolution and adaptation, there’s nothing to truly evolve or adapt to. The enemies are the same every run. The environment is the same every run. Why should I experiment with evolution if I can just level physical strength…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rules! It does a lot to avoid the pitfalls of the survivor-like genre. It encourages thoughtful play and has a ton of upgrades. The moment-to-moment gameplay feels very distinct, since you have 2 attack and 1 movement ability, all on cooldowns. You can choose to be peaceful and eat scavenged food and vegetation, or you can be a killer krab, or you can charm enemies to form a pack. It's totally up to you. And there's the fact that your upgrades show up on the character model. At the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The builds are good, but there is a big lack of replayability because almost all of the enemies, creatures, and biomes are the same each run. The attacks are quite similar, so you mostly just make the creature bigger or smaller, and change the appearance. Randomising the enemy creatures would increase replayability drastically! Runs fine on steamdeck

positive · AI labelView post →good bones and fun but i can only give it a thumbs up based off the hope of more content coming down the line. theres just not enough variety in the mutations, and many of them dont actually have much effect. fine for the cost.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Might be the first Rouge-lite I've played where it became LESS fun the more I played. After around your 5th win it becomes waaaaay too reliant on you getting good rng, which feels truly awful cause it seem's like there's some really fun builds in the game- too bad I won't be able to try them unless you make the too easy it becomes not fun. The worst part is, the devs know it's completely based on your starting itemsm, that they punish you for resetting for a good run by cutting your starting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game but it's frustrating because at times it feels like the game doesn't give me what I want. I've already chosen the evolutions but I never roll them and instead I'm given stuff I don't want. And also the game advertises itself as being set in a living ecosystem, but often times it doesn't feel like it. The hatbirb enemy can stay in a hole as long as it pleases, but you as the player can not. And often it feels like when you're on screen the enemies prioritize you over everything…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun, but after 8 hours I feel like the builds generally feel the same now and there's no way I'm playing the same map over and over with only an increase in difficulty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is a playful gamification of the carcinization phenomenon. It's fun (until high pressure levels - then it's just hard). 9/10 - would become crablike again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to recommend this , but I just can't in its current state. While Everything is Crab is a really fun idea, it misses the execution. The main gameplay is supposed to be a rouge-lite experience, always starting from level 1 and there's a few random starting perks to adjust how you play, forcing you to be able to play a few different styles so you can adapt. This adaptation phase never happens. There is exactly 1 correct build and if you do not get it you will not win on higher pressures…
