What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 66 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (81 of 109 positive).
Some reviewers note the game feels incomplete, like early access. [1][2][3] Several players mention performance issues and a need for more content. [4][5][6]

Great game concept but it honestly should still be in beta. The positives are: -the game is interesting, drawing from different genres (rogue like, autobattler, "city" builder) and doesn't feel stale. -it has enough different synergies to allow a level of replayability that completely fits the price. The negatives are: -the difficulty is very poorly balanced (you can die early but if you reach 2nd or 3rd shop and …

Based on the fun I had with the demo, I couldn't be more disappointed. The full release of Exark is missing content, polish, quality assurance, and is overall a inferior product to the demo. There are significant bugs I have run into, from buildings just getting randomly deleted, huge lag spikes from weird interactions, the game crashes every time you try to close it, often getting crashes at the end of runs as …

Refreshing game in the roguelite/auto battler/inventory management genre. Enough that I see myself playing this for a good bit. The art and sound design is incredibly charming with a relatively mild learning curve to clear the game. It took me a few runs in the demo version to wrap my head around the core mechanics that when I delved into this I got to clear it first try. I have seen some typos and grammatical …

Lovely soundtrack combined with a really strong mechanics engine and charming, animated pixel graphics. Some nods toward a certain crazy place. While the game currently has some game breaking combos in place, the devs seem eager to fix them. Mechanically, this is a really deep and strong autobattler. I haven’t seen all the factions/items yet but it seems that even at launch there is a vast amount of possible …

Exark has a lot going for itself and stands out with fresh mechanics in the genre. Ultimately, I would like to give a mixed review and heres why: Unfortunately, the game is way too easy. Won my first run, hesitantly put in some additional difficulty modifiers, aced the next one, boldly cranked up the difficulty to maximum, lost on the very first flight, adapted, won on the next try. Each was with a new house …

60 of 83 · most liked firstRuns are mostly the same, even between houses. There is tremendous potential but the game suffers from anti fun nonsense, where you CAN make a ton of different builds - but its punishing to deviate from anything. Everything is too expensive unless you build up an economy....but by the time you do that the run is half way over. They didn't add meta game progression, no ship upgrades, no hull dynamics - just entomb mechanics. And by the time you have the resources to freely build? Run is…

positive · AI labelView post →I really want to recommend this game, but 1.0 should have been early access instead i recommend playing the demo a few dozen times (since this is pretty much the entire game minus the last boss, some missing graphics and difficulty sliders) and if you dont get tired of it you should buy it and support the developer. If this game was labeled as early access I would have been way more lenient with it, but now I judge it as a fully released game. The game is not feature/content complete and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Should be early access... feels under baked. Rules aren't all clear or obvious (eg some items/buildings expire). The in between-building fights are wash-and-repeat. Some sprites are still missing, or just repeated with hue-shifts. The harder difficulty options don't seem to have any reward (or maybe they do? It's not clear). On paper I love the base idea of the game, inventory management can be really great when you find a good combo. But in practice, it's rare to find that combo, and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is begging for a positive review but it just doesn't deserve one. This has all of the makings of a fantastic "Backpack Battles" clone that operates on a PvE almost "Roguelike" aspect, but the entire idea falls apart in the execution. The biggest issue is that the game doesn't "ease" you into the game, but rather throws everything the game has to offer all at once. Alright, we'll call that a learning curve, sure. However, even as I'm trying to figure out if I want more Academic…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game but wont be recommending before following qol changes Star Atlas should be editable from the start menu instead of being its own thing. If i want to change it i have to click 4 buttons. Difficulty setting doesnt save between runs. to play a full difficulty run i have to click 20+ times per run.

positive · AI labelView post →Idk, I did absolutely fine in the demo and it seemed pretty chill, many options to just try to build some cool synergies and stuff and you'll do fine, no, the game expects u to understand some kinda meta gaming tech to even get past the first map. Idk why games do this hard knowledge block within 30 minutes into the game but its a cheap and lazy way to artificially extend gameplay and force learning without providing game design to facilitate the learning process, roguelikes especially love…

negative · AI labelView post →Game is awesome. Only played it a bit so far, but it's scratching the itch that I've been hoping for from all the backpack battler type games. It's a unique spin on the idea, and it rewards you greatly for cleverness. Only complaint is it could use some optimization for when things get really broken. On the last battle, my game was LAGGING from all the triggers going on.

neutral · AI labelView post →Game is still pretty laggy and buggy for something that should be relatively simple. I would wait for a good sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So we nearly froze Exark with the power of organs at the end there but that game was definitely worth the wait and ill be looking forward to more updates! positive · AI labelView post →Great little roguelike, I was a bit disappointed to see there was only one act, but it does a lot of stuff very well. Here's to ten reviews and good luck in the discovery que!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Want to like it, crashes a lot.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome synergies and build varieties need some performance and stability polish, but overall an amazing game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's weird how people with <5 hours played are negatively reviewing this game. It's a rogue lite or rogue like with cool indie art styles and a cool run concept. The building synergies versus the way to actually beat each run is interesting, you don't even need to actually attack at low level runs. I haven't even began to dig into high level runs it gets extremely hard and that's just where I'm at, so I don't have a lot of insight into it. There's a lot of building interactions I'm sure…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of 08/20, like some others mentioned, this feels like an Early Access game. There are parts of the game that really feel like they still need to be fleshed out. The rank up system, though appreciated, is not really highlighting what exactly you unlocked - you have to go hunt that info down, so the rank up seems trivial. Some of the worker voice FX are a little too Waifu for me - makes it hard to explain to the Mrs. Overall, great game for what its try to me. Nice charm and cohesion in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh. Needs more work, definitely not 1.0. Would be real nice to have some meta progression.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Short: Build your mobile factory/gunship/animal farm, survive trips between ports and fail the DPS check at the end of the run. Feels wonderful when a build comes together and RNG is on your side, but the difficulty rises spontaneously and sometimes it feels like there is nothing you can do to succeed. Still, runs are quick and there are lots of tools to experiment with, with a crisp and cute pixel artstyle.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like the devs convinced me of paying 14 € for playing a concept of a game, not an actually finished game. Lots of ships, lots of reactors, lots of buildings, but wired together rather haphazardly. There is an echo of good game in here. I hope this will be turned into a real game some day.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mechanics are all there very satisfying gameplay loop of combining as many aspects of many different little pieces together just wish that the game was a little bit longer it really feels like there should be multiple worlds or something there are many times where i hit the last few areas and it feels like i JUST assembled my build and i want to add afew more cool parts to it but then it just ends The performance can get pretty bad when you assemble a super efficient build which kinda…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It needs some more updates, the meta currency is not fun, but the bones are strong and it has potential.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has crashed twice after getting an hour into organizing my ship only to be set back to square one. Can't recommend in its current state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thumbs sideways really. I liked the demo so I boughts it. There is not much additional content compared to the demo. The base idea is good and statisfying but it misses some depth and reason to play again. After 4 hours it feels like I have seen all combinations and now I can make it artificially harder by activating handicaps.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played one run but already adore this game. (And survived 60 seconds within the void, woot) This is a wonderful distillation of the genre in a way that makes it so approachable and fun. Huge props to the dev, this is a must play in my book. Edit: Dev, please add a custom cursor, I constantly lose my cursor and there are no keyboard shortcuts lol.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I watched Mix Summer Game Showcase, and it has a lot of games that caught my interests. Some I've only learned from this showcase are Exark and Husk Protocol. Then there are some other games that I've seen from other places before like Lucid, Shade Protocol, and 13Z: The Zodiac Trial.
neutral · AI labelView post →This game is adorable, but more than that im actually really loving every part of it. I forgot how much I liked city builders and this is just close enough to one to really make my day. Ill continue to enjoy this game a lot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very engaging OP-synergy game. but game balance problems. 10-13 hours content. 1 hour runs. +synergies +building variety -major game balance problems. -bugs -easy
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not particularly difficult once you get the hang of it, but is not very well balanced. Certain combinations will give you so many resources that the game cannot count them all and crashes. The game has good building blocks, but still needs a lot of work before I can recommend it to others.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll say I did enjoy my time with the game, and for the price I think it's worth getting for people that like the idea of an autobattler combined with a tile placement game as the core mechanic is very well done. However, you know there is a "but" coming. It just feels like there is a lack of depth and a lot of systems are undercooked. Basically it's a decent game that feels like it could easily have been great and that is a little frustrating at times.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very interesting take on the invetory tetris autobattler with som amazing music and lovely pixel graphics.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good game realy, but not realy finished, and sometimes you get stuck on the restart proceed screen so have to alt f4, whens the new content coming?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We need to remember to send the clip we took of our Exark gameplay to our phone tonight, if not for the game stopping us it would have been ages in the void before we finally died
neutral · AI labelView post →Dear Entities, we wish we would have gotten a screenshot of our run on Exark last night. 2nd run since starting the game and we had such a damn good military loadout with relics that boosted crits and gave every building a permanent +1 to their production every time we got another military building
positive · AI labelView post →Solid game - just needs more buildings and factions and ways to play. But absolutely solid game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid backpacker roguelite. Offers a good number of different builds and strategies with a strong difficulty curve. A lot of builds are certainly more viable than others, but I suspect that comes down to experience vs. the game being flawed. The soundtrack is great, there are a few songs that really stand out in this series that makes for a nice atmosphere. If you enjoy backpack roguelites I think this is a good addition to the genre. Is it the best out there? No, but it takes the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable. Has a lot more potential to be amazing with some QoL improvements and UI/clarity improvements, but in it's current form already worth it imo. Especially for just an occasional run here or there. Does suffer a little bit from one strat to win all, but I'm sure that can be expanded on down the line.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It could use some work but I have fun with this. Reminds me of The King is Watching a bit. I'd personally welcome an option to select the length of the run, as for me 9 rounds feels a bit too short. (The game goes into some kind of reduced endless mode after that). Some extra unlockable elements that would define your intended playstyle before you start your run would be great too. If the devs won't give up on the game and keep adding new things, I think this could be actually a great game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've had quite a lot of fun with this game! It's pretty challenging at first (at least for me, I don't play these types of games much), but once I figured out a few good combos it became much easier. The game is super charming, the soundtrack is amazing, and there's a lot of cool stuff to unlock. I haven't run into any of the technical issues other reviewers have mentioned. Honestly I'm surprised this game isn't way more popular than it is!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun but wildly unbalanced, max difficulty is basically heavy RNG on whether you even get the ability to draft something that can survive past the first one or two rounds.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun Rouge like! Highly recommend to folks who like big numbers :) -Sometimes you just lose, but sometimes you exceed the integer limit -Shockingly poor performance and my computer has crashed on two separate occasions during non-intensive runs. -I would love to see some processing optimizations and QOL changes (like a skip option that runs a calculation to determine resources generated)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has some game-breaking bugs where your buildings will get randomly destroyed on entry to a settlement. Has issues with random freezes/crashes as well. Might be a fun game once you let it cook for a bit and they get those ironed out, but even then there seem to be a few builds that just revolve around multi-cast/crit and unique enablers tend to be at the mercy of the RNG. Relics are either busted and can enable entire strategies or offensively boring as well. The LEXI system is pretty cool,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's basically an early access game, there's so little to do. the gameplay for each ship is kinda the same.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you've ever played a board game considered an engine builder - and loved it. You should be buying Exark. If you don't know what an engine builder is, try playing the Exark demo. You'll probably understand then and want to buy the full game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The dopamine is flowing, but it needs some technical fixes
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The basics of the game are good, it's really similar to The Bazaar in 2D and that's cool but it's just not satisfying to play or win. I didn't feel like I had to be that clever, everything is just a damage check (can you generally outpace the opponent in big number of your choice). Needs more types of builds I think? Or more variety in the gameplay? There's some QoL missing as the board gets very busy as you get to end game and making decisions gets hard 50% because huge decision space and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is both really fun for a numbers and min-max oriented player but also silly fun and funny with descriptions or names of items being pretty funny. If you enjoy FTL or Rim World for all the worlds you imagine happening and all those interactions playing out in your head you'll love this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exark is a new one that's an engine-buildy placement game; Monster Train if it was buildings instead of monsters. New, still being worked on, run-based, runs are a nice length (rarely have I wished they were longer, never have I wished that they were shorter) store.steampowered.com/app/3435610/...
positive · AI labelView post →EXARK is strange. At one hand, I like every bit and bob of it - artstyle is neat, polished. Sounds and visuals are very good for the pixel-art route picked here. Mechanics are robust, there are plenty of ways to build a functional numbers-go-up engine that feels satisfying to toss together. Everything feels fine and scratches that brainy itch. But at the same time I have a nagging feeling that there could be more? Not even content wise, just... more of something. Jubilation, perhaps? The game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great soundtrack, fun gameplay if not a bit easy. It really tickles the adjacency-bonus part of by brain in a good way.
