Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force
Developer IDEA FACTORY, COMPILE HEART
Long ago, a war raged between two powerful deities. Each was sealed away, their weapons scattered throughout the world. Our hero in this RPG, Fang, happens upon one such weapon and now he alone must choose which deity will awaken again! From the Steam store page

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 177 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,030 of 2,392 positive).
Players praise the humor and character interactions as standout features. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game is a budget title with repetitive elements. [4][5][6]

I think alot of people that left positive reviews are blinded by nostalgia. For the price (on sale) I think the game is worth it but the game contains some of the most frustrating elements that plagues many JRPGs and takes it to the most extreme version. For example there is a experience system called WP's that you use to boost your weapons and you can only obtain them from fighting an enemy. One of the first …

Story might not be much at first blush, but if you are a fan of JRPGs, anime and lots of grinding, you really can't go wrong with this one. Also, it's funny as hell. Just make sure to switch voices to JP to avoid cringe.

Yeah, the combat is pretty rough around the edges, and there's also some general jank but this is easily the funniest JRPG I have ever played. Please buy it.

If you never played a game made by Idea Factory/Compile Heart, they are basically a developer know for their budget titles, if you had no previous knowledge of that fact, it would become evident just by playing this game for a bit. It is important to note this game is actually a REMAKE of the similarly named title, so they had an opportunity to improve. The developers took every possible shortcut they could, you see …

+ Character interaction within the story can be really hilarious + The voice dub is really good + 3 routes to play, if you don't look up online, it's hard to find out about other routes. The 3rd route requires NG+ and brings something new to the table + Different characters have different skills which are pretty cool to check out + Each individual characters have their own challenges and doing anything in a dungeon …
Summarised from 34 of the 229 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
81% of the 177 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive dungeon and enemy design. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After slaving through this game for entirely too long, I've finally gotten the ending. I can't really call this a good game. It's not exactly bad either. It's got that perfect middle ground of a b grade game. Everything is pretty average, so unless you have some special interest, I wouldn't bother playing this. Skip over it and spend your time on something better.

Jumping - backspace Opening main menu - F Altering between full sized an window mode - ALT + F4 I belive the talk went something like: Programmer: "Okay, hear me out. If 'space' is for moving forward, doesn't it make sense that 'backspace' should also move you... backward? So, logically, 'jumping'—which is kinda like a leap backward in thought—fits perfectly!" QA: "But... jumping is literally moving forward or up in the game."…

The most important story battles that are supposed to be the most interesting will commonly leave you unable to do anything. Instead, you'll find yourself hitting the enemy and doing jack while awaiting the story to "progress' until you can actually hurt the enemy, leaving you, as mentioned before, nearly dead while the enemy recovers at full health.…

neutral · AI labelView post →Fairy Fencer is an interesting title. It's largely a reskin of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory (released later on PC as [url=store.steampowered.com/app/353270]Re;Birth 3). The mechanics are virtually identical, it's the same turn based combat system, you move around within a radius, do combo attacks, spend SP to use specials with epic anime cutscenes, transform when you fill up a gauge etc. There's an exact same kill/fetch quest board, and even crafting that's identical to the plan system in…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game look solid and fun for the first 8 hours , and then it fall apart for reusing same enemy model / dungeon design with just color redesign. Nothing special except grinding forever and beating the boss. The character development is so bad, i can't feel their feeling and it is so bad. Combat -The difficulty for this game is so hard to estimate because it does not show enemy level. You can only 'feel' the enemy power when they smack you. -Buff/debuff on this game make no sense, you can't…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Idea Factory... like them or hate them this is one of their better offerings. This isn't as good as some of the indy stuff or an Atlus/SE RPG. However, the price is low and thus gets my seal of approval.

While it may not reinvent the genre, it delivers a charming, character-driven experience with deep combat mechanics and an engaging world. A Familiar Yet Fun Story The game follows Fang, a lazy but likable protagonist who unwittingly becomes a "Fencer"—a warrior bonded with a fairy through…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the most mediocre product from Compile Heart. Maybe this will sound a little harsh but this game is a waste of labor. Character design, soundtracks, voice acting are great. Gameplay and game design suck, hence the game sucks. Don't be deceived by the Steam rating. This game is overrated as heck. They should have named this Repetitive Grind Fest instead of Advent Dark Force. They even recycled the story in itself. Most of the time, I played this with a grumpy cat emote on my face.…

My son got this game from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of two Idea Factory/Compile Heart games I have double-dipped for at full price due to how much I personally enjoyed it. This is, you could say, the intended version of the Fairy Fencer F story due to how it is structured. You might be wondering, though: how is this the intended experience? Isn't it a different game? This game has the original release story as the base route, meaning if you do not mess with the requirements to trigger one of the other two routes the story could take,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fang best protag That's kinda why this game's getting a positive- it's got some charm and humor that's stuck with me for years. Overall as a game it's middling- a little clunky, easy to break, moderately by the numbers linear and held up by the characters and quirks. So it's a hit or miss game overall. Well worth it on discount even if you just do a single playthrough. Me? I'm finally going for the full achievement run as this is the second purchase of the game for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you thought the original Fairy Fencer F was a wild ride, wait until you dive into Advent Dark Force! This game takes everything you loved about the first one and cranks up the fun factor to eleven, adding more characters, more choices, and more over-the-top antics. First off, let’s talk about the story. Imagine you’re back in the shoes of our favorite lazy protagonist, Fang, who still thinks a nap is the solution to everything. This time, the stakes are even higher as you gather Furies…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a massive fan of Compile Heart/Idea Factory games since they contain a lot of fanservice, are JRPGs, and I like most of their character designs and illustrations. I hope for another game like this but make the grinding more difficult. Note: If you are someone who isn't fond of this type of game, I recommend purchasing AAA games that focus on character development and story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dam this game definitely outdid all my expectations for it. +Visually, this game is pretty good. Not the most outstanding graphics but their VN portions are pretty good. There are very few movie portions so you will mostly be seeing their anime portraits anyway which is nice to look at. My favorite design has to be Tiara but dam all of them have great designs. +The soundtrack is really good. The shop themes are nice. The many dungeon themes are actually really good. The subterranean tower and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great little game to get on sale, like most games of it's kind. The graphics are great, the gameplay is fun and more complicated than your normal hack/slash tactical games of its kind. Most games in this genre also have crafting/grinding dungeons letting you play longer if you feel like completing side quests, alternate ways to do the dungeons with different enemies, and a few different ways to play the story. Well worth the price on sale for a lot of entertainment.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the newer version. It has a better interface, more on screen characters, more/different dungeons, a skip/fast forward button during battles, and it's WP system is more streamlined. The complaints about the WP system are still valid. It is still quite a burden sometimes. However, I find the game (so far) to be better than the original. If you are going to play this game, play this one instead. Recommended. Edit (8/22/2026): Some minimal crashing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i'll start with the negatives because there are a few -the overworld and main hub is bland, it feels like how sega made sonic unleashed work on the wii versus xbox/playstation, overworld is flat and is essentially background images, its just point and click where to go, which makes it a lot less immersive, but its not really a isue due to another negative aspect we'll tackle in a bit -the combat IS fun but you start out in a grindy no-fun way and you basically only get good ways to grind…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force is a JRPG that mixes lighthearted character banter with a surprisingly big game behind it. It has that Compile Heart vibe: colorful cast, lots of dialogue, and a tone that can flip from goofy to serious depending on the chapter. If you enjoy story-heavy anime RPGs, it’s easy to settle into. The combat is turn-based but built around momentum. You’re not just picking “attack” and waiting—positioning matters, hitting enemy weaknesses matters, and chaining actions…

The Visuals are not my cup of tea but they are good from an objective point of view. Gameplay is pretty basic and easy to learn and not that hard to master. The biggest problem is the grind until you learn there is a skip button for animations and whatnot which the game does not explain. I spent 2 playthroughs out 10 not knowing it and that what…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is very slow and the controls are a mess. Combat feels very strange and the performance of this game is questionable at best.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A quick test wether you'll stick with this game - find a letsplay and watch like 2 cutscenes. If you enjoyed the humor, go for it. Personally, I started laughing out loud since third dialogue box and then never stopped. Absolutely, positively fell in love with this game on every imaginable level. Never felt disappointed. Obviously it's a comedy story so don't expect to be blown away by complex twists, but story still punches rather high for its weight class while serving you with jokes on every…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force is a console (Playstation) ported anime themed JRPG when you have a sword and run around with anime girls or something, fighting somewhat janky RPG style turn based battles and wrestling with the controls. Surprisingly for a Playstation port the game actually runs and even supports 4K resolution. The game itself is where the problems are as you're faced with endless unskippable cutscenes, visual novel sections and intros (because Japanese developers still…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force. The story has a combination of humor and with some dark moments. The gameplay is fun, pretty simple but fights can still prove to be a problem. The music is good, my favorites being some area locations, the boss themes and later battle themes. The game has three story routes which drastically changes how the story goes on each one. It adds replay ability and you get new party members in each one. All the characters are likable and each having a little character…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An outstanding JRPG. It has great combat that doesnt get boring as alot of these games do after tons of grinding . And yes, there is alot of that, but that is okay, because its enjoyable enough that you will still be immersed in it. Turn based, tactical and a joy to experience. Graphics are really good for the most part. The story and humor is where it really shines. Alot of the games that go for the humorous atmosphere can be cringy and just not funny at all, and worse...It is obvious they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite being a big Hyperdimension fan, this still stands out as one of my favorite Idea Factory titles to date. Fairy Fencer: ADF takes a more traditional RPG theme as opposed to Hyperdimension's inclusion of memes, waifuism, and meta humor, but the end of the day, everything about it is just good. The gameplay is almost exactly the same as Hyperdimension, but there's no problem with that. The story, however, takes you across a rollercoaster of emotions as all three alternate timelines are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good soundtrack and beautiful illustrations. The story is not innovative and the game has performance problems. It comes highly recommended to fans harem style shonen anime stories and JRPGs but, in the state that it is in at time of writing, with reservation that if portability is not a huge factor, it is better experienced on PC.

neutral · AI labelView post →Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force, developed by IDEA FACTORY and COMPILE HEART and published by Idea Factory International, is a reworked and expanded version of a distinctly niche JRPG that leans heavily into anime sensibilities while layering in additional systems and branching narrative paths. It presents itself as both a traditional fantasy adventure and a self-aware, character-driven experience, blending lighthearted humor with moments of darker storytelling. Rather than reinventing the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man If this game was a Visual Novel it'd be worth a lot to me, but the gameplay is just SO unsatisfying and annoying that I just can't play it anymore. The characters and dialogues are quite interesting and well made. But it's the damn gameplay that saturates it to rock bottom. This is literally the first game where I really enjoy the dialogues/characters but really hate the gameplay. Even if I reduced the difficulty and gave up on the "hard" achievement to skip the combats, I would…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While this is a remake of the original game, I think it has done a great job on expanding and rewriting the original. I definitely liked this much better than the original Fairy Fencer F.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like some of Idea Factory games. I really do, but this one...made me sad. It has some interesting ideas but gameplay is so tedious and grindy that in the end it's not worth the effort. Dungeons are meh. Not that IF was ever famous for their dungeons. Idea of giving "buffs" and "debuffs" to dungeons is sort of cool though. For example, you can get more exp or gold from dungeon or change enemies in there completely. But to get some of them you need to go through hell and back. Characters are…
