What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 166 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,082 of 4,494 positive).
Some reviewers note the gameplay is repetitive but enjoyable as a musou title. [1][2][3] A few players criticize the long dialogue and lack of polish. [4][5][6]

I'll be real I dunno why I dumped 40+ hours into this. Sunk cost fallacy or something. One thing I think needs to be said first though is: you probably shouldn't play this if you haven't played the Fate/Extra duology on PSP, or otherwise have good knowledge of it, because it gets really confusing without that context. Almost no time at all is spent on trying to catch you up on things in that sense. There are a few …

cool story using the world of fate extra with musou gameplay but the biggest thing you need to know is that if you pick the female mc you get to have your own yuri polycule and that matters much more than anything else i could say about the game. i love nero and would do anything for her

If there was a mixed feelings option on Steam that I could use, I'd put it. I'll note that this is more of a rant than a review, by the way. The TLDR is this: The game is decent, though I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a very big Fate fan to be able to see through all its flaws. Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star. It's rough. Has a lot of good parts but is still rough and feels unpolished. I'll start with the …

Never played a gayer game in my whole life. As far as Musou games go, this one isn't too special - biggest difference between this game and Dynasty Warriors is that this one's faster. Unlimited dashes; constant, near-instant travel between bases; frequent Musou attacks - although their animation can feel dragged out. The battle music isn't very memorable, but fitting. Indoor music that plays while you're alone with …

Hmph, Fate/Extella—a decent attempt by mongrels to capture the grandeur of the Moon Cell War. The battles, though repetitive, provide fleeting amusement, and the story, while verbose, is passable for mortal standards. The visuals shine like a polished gem, though none can match my radiant glory. Play this if you wish to glimpse at fragments of brilliance—but know it pales before the King of Heroes. Gilgamesh
Summarised from 34 of the 214 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
86% of the 166 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Fate/EXTELLA. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive level design and missions. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator website Metacritic, Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star received "mixed or average" reviews from critics aimed towards its PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch ports. Lilian C. for Destructoid considered it a "decent" game despite its "lack of variety", whereas Robert Ramsey at Push Square had criticized its repetitiveness, which he felt "bled" into the experience over time. GameRevolution's Matthew Utley had criticized its "unusual choice of font size". Both Ramsey and Utley agreed that a downside of Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star was its "repetitiveness". Morgan Sleeper at Nintendo Life felt the game was a "colourfully appealing character action title with fast-paced…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a game I recommend you play. I did not like this game. This game taught me that I don't like Warriors game in general. So keep that in mind. I do not know if this is a good Warriors game or not compared to other Warriors games. I just know I did not like the gameplay either way. Considering that takes up the majority of the content in this game, you can see my grievances. I did like the idea of the diverging stories, where you can go down Path A or Path B, but I just didn't appeciate…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →17. Fate/Extella gave us Altera route and damnit they got me again with their sincerity. Altera makes the rest of the game worth it. Also OG Saber with a route that has her shitstomp Iskandar and Gilgamesh and the whole FSN+Extra cast at once is hilarious for trolling powerscalers.
positive · AI labelView post →It's only worth it if you are that much of a Type-Moon fan and haven't read FGO, in terms of lore there's little that's explained here that ain't covered on FGO as well. Outside of gameplay the only reason to play this game is Altera, however I don't feel like going through 20 hours of Nero and Tamamo filler is worth it, I love those two and the only reason I managed to withstand it is because it was them, Nero and Tamamo's voice acting is great, mostly in that they are fun to listen to, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →completed the Nero arc. enjoyed the game so far
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So while I definitely recommend this game, you should be aware of what you're getting into. Every single story battle is accompanied by a visual novel section both before and after it. Unlike other musou games, these visual novel sections are just as long as the battles themselves. This game is very much a Fate game first, and a musou game second. And while the musou experience is fun, this particular rendition of it is a bit lacking. The camera is way too close to your character, even when…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fate. like fate? i'd say its worth the buy. Well you might wanna go in expecting the dialogue to be LONG So much dialogue.

neutral · AI labelView post →The gameplay is actually a lot of fun, but the game is mostly dialogue. The dialogue is mostly nonsensical. The story is: We say a bunch of stuff that makes no sense, and then spend the rest of the game explaining it very very slowly. There are progression systems, but they're like 99% irrelevant. I don't even understand why they're there. Levels keep up naturally. Side content is all repetitive. Upgrade slots unlock based on repetitive objective completion and correct dialogue choices.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, this game was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the story, and the gameplay was fun. Pretty much all the servants (besides Archimedes) were fun to play. I have played through all of Extella Link now, and while I prefer this game's story, the gameplay in Link is much better. That said, this game was still really fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am the bone of my sword Steel is my body and fire is my blood I have created over a thousand blades Unknown to Death, Nor known to Life. Have withstood pain to create many weapons But yet, those hands will never hold anything So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works. Good game for fans
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pro tip: Stage info and Animations (including Noble Phantasms) can be skipped using the button assigned as the "Pause Menu" button, saves a lot of time, do yourself a favor and be sure to configure it. My first Musou game, honestly this one was not a bad choice to be familiar with them, I was mostly motivated to play this since I really enjoyed Fate/Extra, It has a lot of dialog with many of the servants and has a lot on the story side. It has an interesting twist to continue the story and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyable warriors game with solid gameplay that helps with its awful repetition with all the side stories for the different servants and finishing everything on very hard. There are 67 "stages" in the entire game and I think about 2/3 of them are just copied from a different perspective servant and they call those the Servant's stories for the non 4 main ones. The game struggles with a lot of repetition with its levels and progression system but the gameplay makes it bearable which leaves me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the VN part of the game, but I can not get past the musou. I just can't see myself finishing this. Not my genre.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fate/EXTELLA After playing through the entirety of Fate/Stay Night, I was interested in the other Fate installments which were not directly linked to the Stay Night universe like Hollow Ataraxia. So naturally, Fate/EXTELLA was the first to spark my interest. At the beginning, I was a bit disappointed by the game: First off, the optimization of the game is quite questionable to say the least. Random crashes during gameplay, allergic reactions to full screen mode, slight changes to sound…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if you see this post a character that starts with a T Tamamo no Mae came to mind since I've been in a Fate mood lately, she's everybody's favorite sassy fox caster from that universe I have her in both FGO and Fate/Extella LINK, but never really played as her much in either game yet
neutral · AI labelView post →I don’t play many Musou games, so I can’t say much about how this stacks up against others in the genre. That said, as a Fate fan, I really enjoyed the story. Nero once again demonstrates why she’s one of the best Servants in Fate; her confidence and charm are surprisingly effective, and more than once she genuinely made me blush. Fate/EXTELLA is a continuation of the Fate/Extra storyline, originally released on the PSP. It’s essentially a visual novel and Musou game combined. The game is…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Banger OST time! This is one of the stage themes in Fate/EXTELLA! Kind of an underrated game? I don't really see a lot of people talk about it fr, but all of the stage themes are a bop! The synths and piano are so fire, and the drums go so hard, by goodness 😭

neutral · AI labelView post →I can't believe this game exists, and it took me so long time to play it. I am a massive Musou fan and always look for a game that scratches the same itch as WO3U did. While this doesn't quite match WO3U with modes or features, it still feels enjoyable to play. This game feels like it was designed to be fun. (Which feels rarer and rarer these days.) I had never played a fate game before, so I jumped in blind. Overall, I was shocked at how much I liked the characters and story. In the second…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've never played a musou game or one where it's at least part of the gameplay so I was in for something new to me. Gameplay is pretty much a fifty/fifty between the musou style of battles, slashing through thousands of enemies and their bosses, and visual novel as you'll have to read a lot about what's going on with the story and their characters. You can skip through that, but highly recommended to not do it. Depending on the maps, a battle can take up to twenty to thirty minutes if you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →my top 4 characters in gaming 💙🎮 Saber also counts as a video game character, Fate/Stay Night was originally a VN but the screenshot's from Fate/Extella LINK, aka my favorite Fate game I'm also gonna mention 2B, Kay Vess and Lara Croft bc they're also cool (I also miss Aloy ngl, need to play HFW)
neutral · AI labelView post →I recommend this game but honestly only for Fate/Extra fans looking to play this for the story, OR Fate fans who don't mind Dynasty Warriors/Musou games. But if you're looking for more Dynasty Warriors/Musou gaming, I'd look elsewhere. Glitches, hardware limitations at the time of the original release, and gameplay choices really hold this game back a lot. Pros -The story and characters are great! positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been into fate for 4 years now, came to this game expecting not too much since it's rarely talked about. Altera's storyline is one of the best moments i've ever seen in fate and so worth it. The rest of the game was not as good, gameplay was enjoyable and story was good, but it all is worth it when you get to Altera.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far I'm 13 hours in and I have completed the first story for Nero and I'm loving it! I've been a fan of Fate since 2018 when I got into it after watching Unlimited Blade Works and I've been hooked ever since. If you are a fan of Fate this is a GREAT game with a compelling narrative, although the fighting and combos are limited compared to other musou titles it does its job. Fate/Extella Link improves the combat, but the story isn't to the same caliber. I recommend playing Fate/Extra…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will not lie to you. This game is crap. Well, the gameplay is crap. Horrendous even. But the story is pretty good. If you played EXTRA and/or EXTRA CCC, I recommend reading the short notes of EXTELLA ZERO and then play this game for it to make sense. The sequel, EXTELLA LINK, has much improved and maybe even enjoyable gameplay. But the story is kinda meh. But yeah, if you like this game, I'd also recommend getting the sequel for good ol' Charlemagne.
