What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 171 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,025 of 1,240 positive).
Players praise the game as a faithful digital adaptation of tabletop wargaming with deep tactical depth. [1][2][3] Some find the game slow-paced, clunky, or with a poor tutorial and UI. [4][5][6] Several reviewers compare it favorably to Total War for historical accuracy. [7][8][9]

There's a lot of depth here if you're into historical strategy games, but the pace is much slower than I was hoping for. Battles can drag on, and the presentation doesn't do much to keep things interesting. I can see why some people enjoy it, but it just wasn't for me.

Yeah it looks like a poor man's Total War: Rome 2, but don’t be deceived, there’s treasure here. This is a very elegant game, I find the game challenging and fun at the same time, with an easy learning curve. I've even made my own scenario's very easily. I really do enjoy this series, but it's very important to note that this is a digital version of a TABLETOP miniatures wargame (dice rolls, morale checks, etc.). …

This game may feel clunky at first, but it is a better portrayal of ancient tactical combat than any other game I've encountered. Formations matter. Classic strategies such as controlled withdrawal on one oblique while pushing heavily on the opposite flank works well. The quality of troops matters tremendously. The impact of ground quality on combat (especially phalanxes) was gratifying. The degree to which you lose …

If you’re a serious ancient or military history geek, this is the game for you—hands down. Get it yesterday. The battles are far more realistic than the Total War series, which is very popcorn-and-bubble-gum in comparison. Easy to play, but hard to master. A very big thumbs up,

I have a very large number of lead miniature ancients and medieval armies in 15 and 25 mm, that I have collected and have played on tabletops since 1981, with rules to include WRG5, Warrior, and Sword and Spear, the latter of which I consider the best of all the many ancients/medieval rules I have played. At my current age of 70, finding FOG2 and its related games, is a very great pleasure; its as close to playing …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Field of Glory: Empires received generally favorable reviews upon its release. It holds an average of 76/100 on aggregate website Metacritic. The game was often compared to Imperator: Rome, another 2019 strategy game about the Roman Empire. Strategy Gamer said that "Empires lacks the breadth Imperator has striven for and is a few years behind what Total War is doing these days, but it's a smartly made game and gives a deeper military experience for those who prefer those aspects. It's definitely one to consider and an excellent new contender in the grand strategy space." Bill Gray of Wargamer gave the game a positive review and called it "one of the best ancient grand strategy games on the…

positive · AI labelView post →seems another game i forgot to mention and review, well only 800 hours in steam, 1k plus on the site version, then add in the testing part and i'd say i like it, a lot, so would i recommend it? it's got rome in it, so yes, it's a war game, so thats a big plus and it's supported and has some great DLC's and mods, so play, enjoy and play some more, like i've done

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like to spend three hours micromanaging phalanxes, cavalry charges, and terrain bonuses while also feeling the crushing weight of history,” then congrats.. this game was made…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a reader of A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry, I can vouch for this game's relative accuracy compared to others of the genre (*cough* Total War). Everything will go to chaos. You will have to figure out how to manage it if you want to succeed.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is meant to accurately simulate ancient battles, back when warriors were positioned on giant square grids and took turns moving one at a time. The developer is Byzantine Games- an accurate description, if "byzantine" means excessively complicated. Actually the basics of the game are very simple, and you CAN just move your spearmanii around and have fights happen. The complexity only comes in if you actually want to understand why things are happening, or figure out where the obtuse and…

The fact that it's not Fortnite or Call of Duty seems to be very daunting. Of course my Civ 5/Fantasy General-playing ass got a pretty decent whooping while learning about maneuvering undrilled heavy foot so I guess I can't **** on them too hard lol. Great game. At its core a modular and extensible system for tabletop wargaming on your PC, which means there is lots of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the 2.5-hour tutorials and didn't really like them. The UI isn't very intuitive with all the small details outlined in the tutorial, often leading to lots of rereading unit details. After figuring out how it all worked I didn't like how it functioned. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing 10/10 turn based total war without the map. Just the battles. Far better than total war imho. It has alot more dice rolls and randomness which in turn makes it feel much more historically accurate. Also you aren't a telepath. Once your troops commit, they are commited, which again, feels more realistic. Then you add in the FoG Empires game from Ageod, and suddently you have a game with limitless replayability. Empires isn't required, as out of the box FOG2 has a rediculous amount of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to like this game, an Ok but somewhat cumbersome tabletop game turned into a videogame. But now that I have Field of Glory Empires I no longer like this game... I freaking love it Runs without any hiccups on Linux via Wine/Proton. You need to create symlinks for the FoG Empires integration to work, you can find a script at the ProtonDB page for FoG Empires.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the most part, good units, graphics and game play. The problem is the AI -- it's NOT "intelligence," but a simple cheat mechanism. Great example is the game I just finished, which prompted me to finally write this review. Playing as the Byzantines vs. the Syrian Arabs, it was impossible to win because the game got at least one -- often multiple -- rallies every single turn, while I didn't get a single rally. I would get an important enemy unit (heavy cavalry led by a general) down to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game so much because I am a big fan of historical strategy games but I can't because I don't understand why on earth range units (archers/javelins/slingers) cannot fire at enemy units that are in melee, I would understand if it's only from the front but it prevents you to fire at enemies even from their rear, making all range units useless or not worth to bring, while historically they were able to (and they did) fire at enemies engaged in melee

neutral · AI labelView post →I tried to like this game. I'm fighting the camera non stop. I keep having pop ups and having to close them. Sometimes when I click on a unit a massive pop up shows the units information and I can't click on an action for that unit. Plus the 4 DLC cost more than double of the base game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A perfect distraction. At first it is overwhelming, and while I still do not know all of the systems, it has become easier for me to play and has become one of my go-to time-wasting game. At its base-form it is a tabletop wargame ruleset brought to a video game. It is fairly simple, meant to be recognized instantly, yet it is also pretty elegant. Many units function as basically chess pieces combined with rock, paper, scissors. Each unit is able to do certain things and overpower others.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Impressive. Might be the first game to get a bad rating already during the tutorial. Why? Im 5 minutes into the tutorial, while being constantly bombarded with long popups with instructions basically EVERY GODAMN TIME I MOVE MY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MOUSE. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Field of Glory II is a great turn-based tactical wargame set during the Rise of Rome from 280 BC to 25 BC. It is easy to learn, but hard to master, making it a rewarding experience for players of all skill levels. The game is also a lot of fun in single player, but it really shines in multiplayer. The Play By Email (PBEM) function is perfect for people with busy lives, as it allows you to play against other players without having to be online at the same time. My only complaint is that I would…

neutral · AI labelView post →Great tactical "ancients" game. Campaign mode follows historical battles throughout multiple civilizations. Custom matches are also fun (especially in multiplayer). If you're into single player, the AI gives a decent challenge as well. Formations, timing, and a bit of luck will win the day. My only issue with the game is the lack of a fatigue system which seems like an extreme oversight in a melee-focused tactical game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great active community on Slitherine forums, many tournaments and players willing to play and help you out. Great replayability. Two thumbs up.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →15 hrs in and I can say this game is definitely worth playing. It's refreshing to see a game that really tries to understand and simulate ancient warfare. Not as depicted in the popular zeitgeist but how it may actually have been. The intelligence of the developer really shines through here. The game lacks some quality of life features and the single player campaign is very bare bones. It's a table top (TT) simulator more than a modern video game. Keep that in mind and you will have a good…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Setting is nice, a lot of things are well-done. But the gameplay itself is questionable, a lot of things are half-random, and overall combat looks clunky. Your heavy infantry can move 2 tiles, but if they see juicy archer ass - they can suddenly cross 5 and expose their own ass. Distance is random, so you never know where they will go. Your slingers damage enemy slingers for 9, but their medium infantry for 25. Why? Go figure. No bonuses/penalties in description of both, same terrain, no moves.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only downside to the game is that there could be more fluff around in and around the campaigns themselves. As it is now the campaign-screens offer very little to make you feel as General X doing his great campaign in Y. Imagine a map showing your progress and a bigger text-snippet of why you are here doing what you do at this stage. Anyhow, would buy again. 9/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars) Field of Glory II, developed by Byzantine Games and Slitherine Ltd., is a historical strategy game that takes players on a compelling journey through ancient battles and warfare. Set in the classical era, this turn-based tactical game offers an in-depth and immersive experience that appeals to both history enthusiasts and strategy gamers on Steam. Visually, Field of Glory II may not boast cutting-edge graphics, but its charm lies in its attention to historical accuracy. The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the game while it was at 100% discount, got board of it pretty quickly. The combat is kinda slow, and units dont really die rather they just break apart in their moral until they run away if you want to play multiplayer, you have to sign up for some kind of account rather then just being able to use your steam account, if you dont want to make an account then your not allowed to play multiplayer though maybe this game will be for you, maybe you want to play a more realistic warfare game…
