What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 191 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (327 of 555 positive).
Some players praise the remake for its nostalgic value and updated graphics. [1][2][3] Others criticize the controls, forced Uplay integration, and lack of challenge. [4][5][6] A few reviewers note the game is decent on sale but inferior to the original. [7][8][9]

By playing Flashback I was hoping to get a nostalgia trip and a happy reunion with Conrad. After six hours I wouldn't say it's the best game I've played, not either a game I put a lot of time in, but I liked getting flashbacks to a bygone era. The steering is more action oriented than the original and the story is changed a bit. I bought the game on sale on Steam and the low price justifies the six hours of gaming …

Flashback, published by Ubisoft and developed by VectorCell under the guidance of original creator Paul Cuisset, is a modern remake of the iconic 1992 cinematic platformer Flashback: The Quest for Identity. The game attempts to reintroduce the classic’s gripping sci-fi story and intricate platforming mechanics to a contemporary audience with updated graphics, smoother animations, and quality-of-life improvements. …

As a fan of the original game on the SNES (or Genesis, depending on your choice of console back then), I'm honestly pretty disappointed in this remake. The character's controls are completely different from the original game, which were slower and more deliberate and catered more towards platforming and careful combat, and yet the environments and enemy design did not change in order to reflect the change in …

As a remake to the classic cinematic platformer, this 2013 version of Flashback is… just not very good, especially when compared to the most recent rerelease of the original. Whereas the original is still timeless and has its charming in its simplicity, the look and feel of this version is incredibly bland, with mostly forgettable settings, stilted dialogue, and out-there story twists that just complicates things. …

Flashback is a remake of an old time classic. Sadly, I can't recommend this. And it's not because I'm a fan of the original who's hating on new things which are introduced in this remake. The new controls system and levelups are fine with me. But what really bugs me about this remake is it's technical side, the game graphics are blurry, the gameplay is bugged. I stopped after 30th attempt at finishing stealth …

I know I said it last time but this game is so gorgeous for its era. I will state this again too, that I am using ReShade to ditch the piss filter, but with some color stabbed into it, it looks good. I especially love the field areas outside the cities. They feel so much more lively than what AC 1 had. In a way they remind me of Oblivion and how its cities look on the outside.…

The main Atari Flashback ROM with the menu currently only works in specific emulators like NintendulatorNRS but the individual game ROMs are more compatible. Have fun playing Atari on Nintendo.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No idea why anyone is giving this a bad review then claiming they were "a big fan of the original". I suppose they were remembering it better than it actually was, kinda like when I tried to rewatch Blakes 7 a while ago. Loved it whilst it was on, but now I realise it was utter cack. Anyway, to me, this is a fitting tribute to a game I have very fond memories of. Its still fun to play and a damn site prettier than the original. Yes, there's too many signs telling you what to do, but the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Quick shout-out for Lunark! Disappointed in the disappointing Flashback remake and awful Flashback 2? This game is basically what should have gotten the time in the spotlight.
negative · AI labelView post →This updated version is fantastic. I remember playing the original, and this does a pretty good job of staying true to that version. The graphics are up to date, and the gameplay is actually fun. As usual I wish we could avoid the need for crap like Uplay, but as long as the game works I hardly care.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way to crap on the 1993 game with botched controls, rushed production and really pointless leveling system that does nothing to help with the bullet sponge enemies you face or the glitchy platforming.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not too big on the original Flashback but this game has made me appreciate what the original did well a whole lot more. Flashback 2013 has none of the redeeming qualities of the original or any real redeeming qualities in general It's Just a cheap XBLA "remake" that tries to "modernise" what didn't need modernising while missing the point of what the original was entirely. It often directly copies level layouts from the original despite the fact the two games play completely differently…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Decent Remake of the original which I played on the Amiga, I don't get what people are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about, yeah you need to install Uplay to be honest its pretty unobtrusive and only starts when you actually start the game up. Ok, so maybe its a bit redundant to have both steam and uplay as drm but its not such a big deal as people are making out (waah, waah, Uplay, Ubisoft evil, paranoia etc.) Comes with a free copy of the 1993 original as well, what more can you ask for?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Back in my highschool days the Sega Vs. Nintendo war was serious. Flashback was one of those games that was simply amazing. Played it non-stop till I beat it. Then played it again. And a few more times. There is a lot of nostalgia with this game, and I love the re-imagining of this current version. Even just watching the opening sequence the other day when I booted it up for the first time brought back memories. If you appreciate an old-school feel, puzzle adventure, this game is a must

neutral · AI labelView post →Stunning!!! Truly stunning!!!!!!! This is a text-book, step-by-step tutorial in how to completely destroy a classic, original, ground-breaking masterpiece--which the original, 1993 Flashback clearly is. The team behind this MUST be hung for treason (or, at least, never be allowed to make a computer game again)! Terrible!!! Just terrible!!!!!! If you buy this, you deserve all the curses that Allah--the 'god' of 'peace'--shall surely bestow upon you, effendi. Terrible.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Off the top of my head. Flashback on Sega Genesis is one of my all time favs and a very frequent replay game for me
positive · AI labelView post →Don't let the flashy colors and lighting fool you. This game is a crappy attempt at rebooting a classic. Though the original may not have necessarily aged well, the classic is still more compatible with modern hardware than this 2013 steaming pile. Just get the classic. The original is a better way to prepare for Flashback 2.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this. This game is the most generic, unfun remake of a game I have ever played. The original was rather unusual and the art style worked for it and I still remember it with a level of fondness. In this new one its just trying to flex graphics. Forcing a lot of unwanted girlfriend drama for the sake of plot, rather than a guy trying to thwart an alien invasion. Never has my excitement and interest been so effectively turned to distain and disgust. Play the original, not this.
