What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 29 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (79 of 93 positive).
Players praise the game's fun arcade gameplay and nostalgic value. [1][2] Many reviewers love the soundtrack and visuals, calling them great for an older game. [3][4][5] Several players criticize the broken controller support and poor controls. [6][7][8]

Game has real potential to be fun, a bit reminiscent of SSX on Tour. Too bad the controls SUCK SO TOTALLY. You cannot properly map the controls to a gamepad and once you try you cannot even reset to the Default keyboard controls so you are doubly buggered. Considering it was released for PS2 and worked with a controller on that platform it is just a very poor effort by the devs with the shoddy controls on this PC …

No controller support, early PS2 graphics, unintuitive interface and controls. I'm sorry, guys. This is FAIL. I'll be requesting a refund on this one. The only thing they got right was the soundtrack.

Being a hardcore fan since it came out I must say this game really is something special and has a special place in my heart. I remember playing it in the winter with my friends over and we would have an awesome time. We would compete with eachother when the highscores were online. We were in the TOP 10 *literally*. The visuals are still great and it works fine on newer machines and OS's. Been spamming the forums for …

+ fun + nostalgic + arcade + great soundtrack + menus and UI still hold up well + 6 characters to choose from, upgradeable stats + unlockable cosmetics and special tricks + well thought out stages with multiple viable lines + freestyle or challenges + local coop + well optimized, quality port + better than SNOW or any alternatives on steam

FreakOut ... ... is not a perfekt Game, but its one of the few Freestyleski Games on PC. Clearly you cant compare it with the new Game called SNOW here on Steam. This one is from 2007 and the grafics always remind you on that. BUT its a really fun Game and it has great chellanges. Its a Game you could play for 1000 of hours like I did with the non-Steam version. I would recommend this Game to every Skier, especially …

FreakOut: Extreme Freeride sits at 69% positive across 26 opinionated reactions from 3 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Reviews for non-PC platforms were less favorable. In a PS2 review, Romendil of JeuxVideo.com said that while the game is not "calamitous," it lacks any "hair-raising" sensations and that the gameplay is " classic and accessible", but "doesn't reach the ankles of games that inspired it, such as SXX." However, both reviewers noted that the game's soundtrack was its strongest point.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visually the game looks a lot like SSX 3, but you can change the screen size to match current monitors and add antialiasing. You have a selection of about six skiers, and you can customize them with different clothes and gear. I was a little disappointed in the overall lack of customization. It's enough that you can pick an outfit you like, but you probably wont be satisfied with the selection of hats, pants, and jackets. Either way I've seen more customization in other snow games (Amped comes…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They couldn't even be bothered to properly implement controller support with this console port, no rumble and half the buttons don't work even though all worked perfectly on console.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Real Playtime: 100+ Hours (CD version) Probably should mention that I`m biased. This game helped me survive through my first and second heartbreaks. From the technical standpoint this game is solid but not impressive. It just works and never bothers. Visually it`s good, especially the snow and the sky. Colors are a bit drab. No physics, but ragdoll animations can be fun sometimes. Hitting a tree while doing tricks looks amusing. Soundtrack is amazing for the time, I have all the songs…

neutral · AI labelView post →the graphics are nice and the soundtrack is amazing. the gameplay and career mode structure feels like a rip off of aggressive inline if im being honest. biggest complaint is that controllers are not auto-mapped. overall its your basic action sports game from the late 2000's that really doesn't stand out much. honestly you could play SSX with some late 2000's pop punk in the background and get a much more enjoyable experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FreakOut: Extreme Freeride is an extreme skiing game from 2007 but still rocks (the game + the soundtrack too) - Adjustable screen resolution - The graphics looks good in 1080p even the game is from '07 - Amazing maps - Some says the 'Partical Controller Support' is not working perfectly, but who cares... keyboard master race - Few minor bugs, but you rarely meet them - Great soundtrack for extreme skiing

neutral · AI labelView post →the controls make me wanna die, controller remapping is also schizo guess work or steam input hackery, keyboard just sucks to play with. besides that the "free roam" levels are globally locked so you're forced to do the large amount of challenges to even progress in career mode, and trust me i've tried fast unlocking them, just comes off as a really boring and rough experience.
