What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 191 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (422 of 503 positive).
Players praise the game's queer representation and story. [1][2][3] Many find the combat tedious or frustrating. [1][4][5] The writing and characters are widely loved. [2][6][7]

I am so conflicted on this game. On one hand it's about a queer roadtrip to defeat fascism, on the other hand, I absolutely cannot get into the combat at all. For the most part I really enjoy the writing. That meme about writers who use subtext being cowards is totally relevant here. I particularly enjoyed Act III for diving deep into Sam's psyche. I ran out of steam in Act IV, the final part of the game, against …

AAAAAA IT'S SO CUTE AND GAY The dialogue is delightful, I fell in love with all four of these beautiful idiots. The art and animation are neon joy. The battle themes are EXTREMELY good, if you like vocals about the beauty and terror of fighting for a better world. The combat is challenging but fun once you get the hang of it. Also, you get to punch Nazis. GO ON A LESBIAN ROAD TRIP WITH A STOLEN SWORD TO DEFEAT EVIL, …

I do recommend this game, but very tentatively. The dialogue and characters are obviously amazing, but the dealbreaker for me is the combat. It's just obnoxious, repetitive, and way too long; the final boss fight is multiple phases, usually 15+ minutes EACH, and if you die once then you have to restart all over. Maybe this could have been somewhat alleviated by making it truly turn based instead of whatever the hell …

Gameplay sucks major ass. Enemies are just damage sponges and you basically just spam everything you have brainlessly to kill them. This game wants to be a visual novel, let it be. Giving it a positive review because you beat up bigots and every game where you can do that should be praised. Also Act 3 is a banger.

There are so many aspects of this game that are fantastic that it's hard to know where to start. The writing is by far the best thing about it so, if nothing else, you should definitely play it for the writing alone. The pixel art style is also beautiful and the illustrations are amazing. The levels of representation in this game are phenomenal, the characters feel truly alive, and they are extremely likeable. The …

Players who liked Get In The Car, Loser! talk about great queer representation and inclusivity; those who didn't talk about combat is tedious and repetitive. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Sam Wachter of RPGamer rated the game 4/5 points, calling the battle system "serviceable", but not keyboard-friendly, and noted that it was easier to play with a controller. He also called the difficulty "unbalanced", with some acts being "trivial" while others were incredibly difficult. However, he praised the presentation as "fabulous", saying "a lot of the music absolutely slaps", and stating that the game's visuals had "a lot of punch to them". Isaiah Colbert of Kotaku called the game "a trip worth taking", saying that the writing was "witty and deep" and the pixel art "evocative". While calling the game's early combat "repetitive", he stated that it "evolved into more challenging…

Whether you bought it in the past or buy it in the future, they'll now just be included in the game.
neutral · AI labelView post →In a DLC for the game "Get in the Car, Loser!", the Halloween Pencil appears as a guest item provided by Toby Fox. And when upgraded it gives snippets of "a story from another world," which seems to describe the start of Susie and Kris's friendship.
neutral · AI labelView post →Oh, that's nice! Indie queer road-trip RPG Get In The Car, Loser (which was free briefly at launch, so a lot of people grabbed it before it went commercial) just made all of its DLC part of the package. That means if you got the base game free, you get it all free. Super generous!
positive · AI labelView post →(beyond that, it's obviously a vast simplification to say all power fantasies are bad - Get in the Car Loser is an example of a game that is a power fantasy of a queer uprising against fascism and generalizing that away as "power fantasy bad" isn't necessarily useful - nothing exists in isolation)
neutral · AI labelView post →Hopefully this is the last of these I'll ever post! Get in the Car Loser! version 1.0.2.76 is now live on all desktop platforms. This update resolves a bug where the game could sometimes crash when loading a save under very specific circumstances.
neutral · AI labelView post →I've never seen a black trans woman as a lead in anything until this game, and as one, I'm really appreciative for it. It's cool seeing representation, even if it's for a smaller indie game! The game is split across two parts, the visual novel where all the characters interact with each other, and the combat, which ties each character to a button and you cycle through them (and their cooldowns) to use their abilities. Honestly, later in the game the combat is a bit tedious (which is why I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels dirty for a number of reasons to say that I didn't like Get in the Car, Loser! For one, I'm obviously not the target audience for the game: I'm a straight cismale when the game wears on its sleeve that this is supposed to be a relatable experience for trans lesbians and so I could understand and sympathize with the struggles that the game is intended to channel, but not empathize in a lived way. For two, I have a very low tolerance for the JRPG genre at the best of times; outside of…

I want to like it, but I just can't enough to recommend it. There's things I enjoy, but so much more that grates on me. Maybe this is your kind of game, but it isn't mine. For context, I'm someways into Act II. Let's break this down: Writing From the very first lines, the writing is incredibly heavy-handed in a way I just couldn't enjoy. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There will be nothing gendered about my fist in your face. I was lucky to add Get In The Car, Loser! to my collection when the game was free, but somehow kept delaying the actual playing. See, I’m a big fan of developer Christine Love’s visual novel duology, Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus, and GITCL looked very different, both in its nature (battle RPG with some visual novel elements instead of a pure VN), and in its premise, which seemed a bit out there (to summarize:…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I had a nickel for every rpg with a banger soundtrack about a chubby bisexual trans femme healer coping with depression and anxiety while going on an adventure to save the world that reconstructs the healer archetype, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but I recomend both.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've recently finished Act 1 and decided now was a good time to leave a review. Let's start with the positives Visuals and music art great. This is pretty much obvious from the trailer and screenshots, but it bears mentioning Combat starts off simple, but gets some depth as you reach Act II. Looking forward to see if this becomes more interesting as I get deeper into the game Some pretty good jokes in the dialogue (however, see my caveat in the next section) Story and lore are good for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A daring magical sword heist turned lesbian road-trip adventure where the queer storytelling far outpaces the sluggish gameplay. This is a tough one to review. On one hand I love the emerging storyline about a group of friends going on a road trip to take down an evil simply known as the “Machine Devil” while talking about love, acceptance and existential dread.. On the other hand however, the JRPG inspired combat that is an integral part of this game is at times a real chore to get through,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →edit: Going to revise it to a Not recommended after act 3. Even on the easiest difficulty combat is stupidly brutal? What the heck? If I pick a story mode that means I've had enough of the combat please. Halfway point review: I'd say it's just on this side of a recommend? The combat isnt exactly the most engaging though and theres so much of it you have to do if you want to get your gear all levelled up so you dont get your ass kicked that its getting very tedious even on story mode. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is split between RPG battle and visual novel portions, which really should be rated separately. The combat in this game is a big hook, but a lot of it isn't explained. It's basically the ATB system from Final Fantasy but you have multiple subsets of attack structures to set up, reminiscent of the paradigm shift system from FF13. I kept playing wholly ignorant of the fact that I could equip anything to the fourth party member until I was in the fourth act. Which means I was barreling…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the beginning I really liked the game. The art style is amazing, I love the protagonists and their banter (although at some point it got a bit much to my taste. The tag does say LGBTQ+ and it really means it. I'm happy with the representation, but as someone who is aro/ace, I didn't relate all that much) and the general story was very funny. The fights, while rather monotonous, were still fun in the beginning, also despite the fact that I felt that there was no skill or tactics required.…

To cope I've returned to DARKSTAR ANTHEM, the existential roadtrip game I start five years ago – kinda HOMEWORLD meets WARFRAME meets GET IN THE CAR, LOSER
neutral · AI labelView post →It's Final Fantasy 13, but good. It's great sprite art. It's fun, funny, complex, honest, and awkward relationship talk. It's LGBTQ+ without slamming you over the head with it. I've been playing RPGs since the original Final Fantasy and this is a wonderful game that's well worth your time!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun rpg of a quartet of cool peeps going on a road trip to save the world. The combat is ok, but the real treasure here are the interactions between the characters and the stories in the items you get as the game progresses. The soundtrack is fantastic too!

positive · AI labelView post →Unfortunately the battle system is kinda not my type
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An incredible experience: fun combat, great music, and a fantastic story about being defiantly queer and imperfect in the face of evil. Easily my favorite RPG of the past few years.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing "GET IN THE CAR, LOSER" for 5 minutes, I realize that it's just a better & more well thought out implementation of everything the tragedy of a game "Indivisible" was trying to do. There is now no reason ever to suggest Indivisible.
positive · AI labelView post →Get In The Car, Loser! is an adventure game/auto-battler, though the store page description mentions RPG, which is limited to the inventory management. The game can effectively literally play itself, excluding the boss battles. Firstly, the positive aspects. The pixel art is beautiful, the story and writing are reasonably interesting, the combat controls are rebindable and the on-screen prompts are displayed correctly. Saving is possible at any time out of combat and there are many save…

These are my (albiet still biased) thoughts about the game after 60+ hours. GAMEPLAY: The core gameplay is very unique and takes (in my opinion) the best parts from several combat systems from games like Valkrie Profile and FFXIII. Of course, YMMV here, I know many people…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. I'm also a big fan of the previous LCAG titles, namely Digltal, Love Plus and Hate Plus, but this just doesn't have the spark of those games. The writing was uninteresting, with sprinklings of poor grammar that just pull me out of the story(Sam has this random bouts of sentences with no punctuation at all), and the characters don't strike a chord with me at all. I freely admit I may not be the target audience, but that doesn't excuse the gameplay from being…

neutral · AI labelView post →I want to like this game, but the combat felt bland and the characters felt even more bland. Maybe it was just the tutorial being a bad representation of the game and early writing in a thing not being good but I really couldn't get a feel for the cast. I feel bad leaving a negative review for an indie game I found for FREE but I couldn't bring myself to play more of it, but hey, take my opinion with a mountain of salt because I'm also not usually an RPG gal
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super queer. Everyone should play this game. A TW for dysphoria would be nice for the trans folk. Otherwise I have no complaints. The enby representation is bangin' <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GET IN THE CAR, LOSER! is fun times within familiar framework. The aesthetics, story, and humor of the game is winning me even if the basic mechanics are not that dazzling. A mix of Thirsty Sword Lesbians and The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood with poc trans lesbians hero, you love to see it.
positive · AI labelView post →Can FFXIII-likes just be like, a thing now? Please? Fun and vibrant. Better on the deck/switch or with a controller. An honest reflection of a certain type of person/friend group (very online, very gay, very tumblr) but charming enough if you've got love in your heart for it or simply identify. Politics aren't subtle. Skilled action RPG players will be able to cruise through very easily. I'm an unskilled action RPG lover and found the standard difficulty and challenge fights just right.

neutral · AI labelView post →I love this game! TL;DR it's a fun little RPG with a combo-based combat system and great story. This is the first game in a long time where I've been actually invested in the story and characters. As someone early in transition, it's got some incredibly relatable content. I've been using this to voice train, which has led to the unintended (but welcome) consequence of talking through my own insecurities. So basically, it's discount therapy. The core gameplay is pretty simple, but…

positive · AI labelView post →I am simply not recommending this game because of it´s actual gameplay elements. The gameplay feels weird, hectic and not really well explained. Look into the game first to see if it´s your cup of tea, I got it through the pride bundle, so I´m not complaining about the price. Just isn´t my kind of game and it may not be yours either.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(payed it when it was free) I played this game when it was free, and felt really hopeful seeing the tags.
