Critics, per Wikipedia
God of Rock received mixed reviews on Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received weak approval, being recommended by 14% of critics. Though intrigued by the idea of combing the two genres, PC Gamer said that it would be difficult to do well, and God of Rock's implementation is "mostly frustrating or uninteresting". Push Square enjoyed the additional strategy of the special moves, which they likened to the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat series. They said the single player can eventually easy and recommended the game for its online multiplayer. Though TouchArcade praised the effort put into the game, they felt the fusion of genres did not work well enough…

60 of 68 · most liked firstOkay so first off I'll lead this review by saying that it is a good game, the charting is excellent and it's insanely fun to play for what it is. However there are two glaring issues, one has a work around, one doesn't. The horizontal note lane is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ atrocious for reading notes, especially if you come from any other rhythm game ever made. There's a reason that Taiko no Tatsujin and Muse Dash limit the game to just two note types, because horizontally the notes become overwhelming to read.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ignore the low playtime; I spent a long time with the press demo before release and meant to get this out earlier. I purchased the full game to confirm criticisms were still applicable to the final product. God of Rock is a visually frustrating game that fails to adequately represent either of the genres it's mashing together, but could easily be a mainstay in the genre if the UI was overhauled and the control scheme revisited. For fighting game players thinking this could be a good addition…

positive · AI labelView post →This game would be amazing if there was a vertical option, it's super confusing with the way it's laid out but if there was something to change that i think it would be perfect
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I haven't played fighting games past a casual level, I am a huge rhythm game nerd and am having a blast playing this game. I see a lot of reviews complaining about the lack of a vertical scrolling option, and I honestly do not think it should be added SOLELY on the basis of convenience. Hear me out. I can play some of the hardest charts of Museca, Jubeat, Chunithm, Guitar Hero, Groove Coaster, Taiko, Crossbeats, Muse Dash, Osu!, and Osu!mania. I greatly enjoy but suck at Pop'n, SDVX,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →games genuenly been a blast so far only criticisms i would say so far a vertical scroll (like most have reccomended) would be highly liked and genuenly make it feel alot better for some including myself other then that a option to not nececarily select specific stages but have a way to set a rotation of possible stages you prefer to appear making some of the most favorite tracks in this game have a bit more of a chance to appear more often vice versa songs that rarely appear get a chance to…

neutral · AI labelView post →Let's talk about motion inputs. The basic concept of a motion input in a fighting game is to define a move's use case. A quater-circle forward or a Dragon Punch motion requires you to push your control stick forward, making the move a risk to use in close quarters. A charge input can be performed by blocking or crouching, allowing a character to turn defensive pressure into offensive rewards. 360's require you to press jump, meaning that the move often needs to be buffered - and consequently…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I won this game for winning a local tournament of it. (It was a side bracket at my local FGC.) This game is actually really well made and I am surprised more people haven't bought it/aren't playing it. It's really fun, but it is for a niche group of people who like fighting and rhythm games like me. I'd say it's more of a rhythm game than a fighting game but I think it's creative how they added fighting game inputs for the specials and how they're implemented. The game is pretty difficult,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →if they put the notes vertical it would save the game <3
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DISCLAIMER: I know my hours are low currently, but I put a lot offline over the weekend at Combo Breaker where this game had local setups, as well as on another steam account that has the game shared from this one. This game does not deserve the mixed reviews it has received. God of Rock does exactly what it sets out to do in combining fighting game elements into a competitive rhythm gaming experience. Many of the criticisms listed in the negative reviews for this game can honestly simply be…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pff. 1. super bad control even in menu, "F4" to confirm, really?!?! 2. Using UE4 for this type of games are bad, my Laptop got super hot after just playing 5 minutes. What is in this game? And why there is no option in settings to reduce graphic? oh yeah, there is nothing to reduce because middle graphics already there, but not optimized at all. 3. Game idea kinda good, but as it is fighting, i would like to follow my character, so maybe moving notes to the center, make them come from top to…

positive · AI labelView post →As someone who enjoys both Fighting Games and Rhythm Games, this game lacks a lot of the QoL options many modern iterations of those games have. As a fighting game player, this game lacks a lot of quality of life features, especially an inability to change the controls upon character select, but also the tutorial seems broken in that the special button does not work properly in mirrored CPU mode so you can't practice special inputs with characters and especially you can't practice charge…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable and fun game! Although it does have learning curve especially if you never done motion inputs in a fighting game but the rhythm aspect of it is pretty difficult but with practice shouldn't be a problem... There are some things it can really improve on and that'll be the UI. I feel the health meter and (the thing in the middle you use to look for reversals) are way too far away...the special and ultra meter are perfect where there are but the other two could use some work. Also…

neutral · AI labelView post →Cool concept mixing rhythm gameplay with fighting mechanics, but the controls seriously fight against you sometimes. Horizontal lane inputs feel awkward and inconsistent, especially during faster sections, which turns losses into frustration instead of hype. There’s fun buried underneath all that, and the soundtrack helps carry it a bit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't try it for long before realizing it was not as fun or exciting as it initially seemed. You are just too focused on the rhythm inputs that you can't even look at your fighter or the moves he/she is making on the enemy. The music is good, but not enough to carry the whole game and the special moves are really hard to make while you are trying to get the timing of the inputs. As a side note, the game runs just fine on the steam deck however the text is really small.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately the game is dead. Also this is not a fighting game its a rhythm game. Its only a fighting game in presentation not mechanics. Its just too busy. Theres too much going on all at once. You have to focus entirely on the keys, all the extra mechanics like reversals and 3 levels of special moves and ex and ultra moves are too much to pay attention to. you also hardly ever get to actually watch the animations. There isn't enough space with the horizontal scrolling to see enough…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea for the game is great but it feels like a lot of things are missing. And it's WAY too overpriced for an indie title.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i made all the notecharts for this game and i hate this game it ruined my life fighting game of the year for 2023 at the TGAs tho ((edit: the musicians are all fantastic though, amazing human beings and incredibly talented))

QRT with a pic of the role you're most proud of! #VoiceActorsOnBluesky The role in mind is not out yet, but until then I am still over the moon for getting to be a fighting game character, Kosaku in God of Rock.
neutral · AI labelView post →Really cool game with interesting concepts that really make your brain hurt in a good way. Although it is ruined by having a horizontal view, and when you are dealing with a pvp game that means you will have to get used to reading both from the left and right, which just feels strange. Once it has an option to toggle between horizontal and vertical charts, then I would recommend this game. It's just sad that the best way to play this game is on a sideways monitor.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The horizontal bars make it hard to actually focus on the fighting. Maybe I just suck, but never had issues with games like muse dash. 1 update then radio silence, so this is it. It wasn't for me. :Beatrice:

neutral · AI labelView post →The gameplay is neat, and the songs are OK, but the calibration tools are laughable, and the AI is a joke. I was KOing the bots on Very Hard difficulty in less than 60 seconds with more than 3/4 of my health. The only reason I even lost health was because I hadn't built the muscle memory to spin my analog stick and end with RT, because what other game needs you to do that while doing very specific button presses? As far as I know, NONE. A fighting game needs a community for it to thrive. This…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is such an unique package of amazing things. The gameplay is innovative and fun, the characters are a great blend of cool and goofy and the music is just fire. Can't recommend enough :-))
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly in love with this game. Not only has it been fun to learn and play, but the music has been so amazing. The versus is very challenging but rewarding and highly recommend for rhythm and fighting game lovers. Just missing a spectator mode and it'll be truly godlike!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/10 got it for 3$ played a bunch of games like this side bars coming from the right is awful all well remembering and doing combos with 5 other keys played 2 levels and thats it, im done + music + voice acting + short cutscenes - gameplay....
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found the game to be quite disappointing. One aspect that particularly bothered me was the horizontal input, instead of the standard vertical one. Additionally, within the first few minutes of playing, I encountered several game design issues that detracted from my enjoyment. The use of Street Fighter input moves felt outdated, the music selection was rather generic, and the sound effects often overshadowed the music. Overall, these factors contributed to a less than ideal gaming experience…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game!! Something Fresh, Something NEW!! Something never done before!! Get ready to feel the pain of learning a new way to play games. Your knowledge on Fighting games or Rhythm games is of no use here. Fantastic Music, Lovable Over-the-top characters, Good Ol' Arcade Fun!!! The game is pretty small, but it has a ton of heart. Also, attempt learning the fighting-music combo using a fight-stick or custom Keyboard, controllers won't do you any good on anything above normal difficulty.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a pioneer in the rhythm fighting game genre, God of Rock certainly has its flaws, but in spite of these, I am still giving it a positive review. Every character is unique, with their own playstyle, their own unique inputs, their own unique matchups against other characters, and the stories for each character give us a look into their life, and how it may have been previously. Overall, it is a fantastic game, and hopefully it gets the online it deserves.

neutral · AI labelView post →It's not awful but... The fact it's horizontal scrolling is just such a big con to this game. Also, the added 'combos' you need to somehow weave in just doesn't work.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Our review: https://1upinfinite.com/god-of-rock-review/ Definitely one of the hottest fighting games out there and I speak with a bias being a fan of rhythm games as well. The skill floor may require a step stool but once you're on the dance floor, you're locked in.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is super fun. Being a big DJ Hero fan and also playing fighting games, this is a great combo of the two. The game functions are easy to pick up. The music is catchy and not overly easy even if cpu is on easy. Lastly the characters have so much personality.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this a unique and enjoyable game, and I don't play many fighting games. However, I have three problems with the game: 1) There's no epilepsy warning of any kind on startup. 2) There's no accessibility options, or any way to turn off the flashy effects, as low effects still make me nauseous. 3) I can't seem to do a local match, one person on keyboard and the other on controller? I tried this last night and it registered the controller and keyboard as player one. So I can only play this…

neutral · AI labelView post →YO this game is the worst dont walk run away from this game the rhythm is horizontal and not vertical. 4 lanes absolute horrid. no convert to keyboard settings. theres other controls besides the the rhythm to fight. I don't understand how you are supposed to focus on the rhythm when there is other controls. But if it was 1 other key u had to press id be fine. BUT 8 OTHER KEYS IS INSANE.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →need to change to vertical I'm waited since the game release and it's not happening until its sale. when I saw the gameplay what make you think it's the good idea for Rhythm game that use horizontal your're not making taiko game which is have 2 buttons.

I know a lot of people are complaining about not having vertical track option, but the horizontal track doesn't bother me if I use my wireless keyboard like a guitar. Feels like playing guitar hero. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely recommend switching your monitor to portrait flipped on keyboard. The base mechanics of how they handle fighting and playing a rythm game at the same time is super fun just sucks that there is no verticle mode. like A LOT. I missed the cool visuals so I could beat an arcade run

positive · AI labelView post →Defiantly not the worst game I've played but there are quite a few reasons i didn't enjoy it that much. Sure it was fun to learn and play, but that was for the first 10 minutes, then it starts to feel like a task. There isn't many animations to the characters what means little pizzazz, the character models on the other hand are great I'd just like to see a little more action. The stories for the characters seemed dull and dry, it had the same format as the stories MK had with all the different…
