Gunbrella is a 2023 action-adventure video game developed by American indie studio Doinksoft and published by Devolver Digital. The game follows a gruff woodsman on a quest for revenge, armed with the mysterious Gunbrella: a firearm that doubles as an umbrella. Do not buy this game. This is a game that shows really well with it's really nice pixel art and in the short bits of action that they showed off in the trailer. I bought this game thinking it would be an action platformer / metroid vania kind of game. It is absolutely not. The biggest issue is the story is a broken mess that even by the end I had no idea what was going on. The story jumps around and you will speak …

10/10 I loved it. Played it thrice on switch, then night a copy on steam. Beautiful pixel art. Great game feel. Stirring music. Crispy sound effects. I think my favorite part was the story and characters. The dialog is really tight and funny, and poignant. I really cared about these people!! Some of the story beats really make me pause and reflect. Powerful. The game has a lot of heart and soul. Reminded me a lot of …

First off, watch the tags. They have it displaying Anime (not even close), Metroidvania (nope), and action roguelike... there's no roguelike gameplay what-so-ever here. However... What you do have is a fun action platformer, and I loved it. Great controls, fun combat, likable characters, unique boss battles, interesting music, and fantastic artwork. Sadly, there aren't a lot of secrets or additional paths, and the …

It has an idea, and potential to be a great game. It's such a shame it's not. World/map design is pretty bad, there are a few secrets which is not enough aaand it's pretty boring. If the setting seems interesting, it might be worth buying on a sale. Ultimately, I'll give it a good rating as it's not a bad game, but a mediocre and lacking one.

Well, yet another awesome gem from doinksoft + Devolver Digital combo. Gunbrella is a simple and straightforward action platformer game that wins you over with great gameplay mechanics (GUNBRELLA™ chik-chik), fabulous pixel art, a stylish noir soundtrack, and an intriguing story to go through (Cosmic Horror + Steampunk? Am I in heaven?) with several choices that affect the story in interesting ways. I also love how …

I played through the whole game for this and it's is very cool. And the OST really stood out, with echoes of Burial. Wish they'd do a vinyl edition with my pic 🤓

I enjoyed Gato Roboto from the same dev, and mechanically the game feels good, the movement and weapons feel responsive, but I'm not vibing with it and can't put a finger on why.

neutral · AI labelView post →I think this game is confused. It's definitely type of game that gets built around a core gameplay idea, but for some reason, that idea is tossed aside for the sake of the story, instead. The gunbrella is barely utilized in any interesting way and is often reduced to a novel method of traversing empty screens. The whole game feels 'empty' in a way that's hard to describe, actually. Walk through a corridor, shoot a couple enemies, talk to some NPCs. Just going through the motions the whole way…

positive · AI labelView post →The art and design of everything is amazing, and the movement is fun. Now that we're done with the pros, lets get to the cons: - The story is fine at the beginning, but there's a sudden time skip, and then it sends you to a new map, which then inexplicably collapses. It feels like they wanted to do more, but suddenly decided to cut 1/2 the game. - You're given 7 types of ammo, 1 is the normal ammo, 1 is special for a specific type of enemy, and the other 5 are completely unnecessary,…

positive · AI labelView post →Gunbrella, a game in which an overabundance of attention to the story attempts to disguise a walking simulator with crappy enemy design.

That's a great deal~ 🧛♀️
neutral · AI labelView post →Gunbrella review: a stylish 2D platformer with bullets in its brolly. A steampunk-themed side-scrolling shooter with a shotgun that’s also an umbrella, Gunbrella crams plenty of frenetic, brolly-based combat into its brief playtime ... Gunbrella is a classic 2D platform shooter in the style of a steampunk western. It’s like Deadwood crossed with Singin’ In The Rain, if Gene Kelly ever used his umbrella to blow holes through anyone who didn’t sufficiently praise his tap dancing. Some light…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has a great core mechanic that doesn't get to shine as bright as it should because both platforming sections and combat encounters stay very basic throughout the game. All the supplementary mechanics like shops, consumables, and ammo types feel underbaked and incoherent to the rest of the game. The story is meh, the choices you make don't really matter. The sound, the visuals, and the overall vibe are all great tho. Hope they'll make a second one. Would be a shame if an idea this great only…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is in my opinion not even reasonable on sale. I'd really like to start with the good, because I really love what this game got right. The color scheme and the atmosphere, (but not the design, the slums and houses and everything else look like what AI thinks steampunk is) on the first cutscene, plus the prospect of a gun umbrella, plus the music felt decent, and I appreciate the fact that this can run on nearly anything. That's it, really. There's nothing else that I can salvage out…

In terms of what I enjoyed, Gunbrella really committed to its theme (gritty, kind of noir-adjacent, with gore). Although I don't tend to like pixel graphics, it was nicely implemented here. The music was pretty cool. There is a wide range of characters you get to meet and talk to, so that was pretty fun.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really short and to the point type of game. Gameplay felt a bit lacking, but not too bad. Mobs and even bosses diversity is close to 0, you will fight everything in the same manner. Also, never felt the need to use all the ammo types, especially when your primary ammo is the best and infinite. Wish there were more types of encounters that required you to use different strategies, not just one mob Also, a bit too much backtracking. You won't necessarily get lost, but would have been way better…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Among the least challenging platformers I've played, and one with such poor and inconsequential storytelling. It's a shame, too, because the premise is unique, but not enough substance to realize it. Killer neo-noir jazz soundtrack, though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In short, the game looks great and polished, but the gameplay is critically unfulfilling it's potential and for that I wouldn't recommend the game at full price. The game's art-style, animations and audio is great. The gunbrella is a really fun mechanic for both fighting and platforming. The characters were interesting and the story was alright. HOWEVER, the game has extremely easy boss fights and nearly no platforming. I would argue that the first boss fight is the hardest due to the…

Like it flows beautifully. The gunning and umbrella-ing feels super satisfying but the game doesn't let you do enough of it. #blutoid #gunbrella
neutral · AI labelView post →It's not terrible, but if you asked me if I would have advised my younger self to buy it now that I have played it through, the answer would be a soft "no". First and foremost, don't use a controller to play this game. Technically it works fine, but the levels and bosses were clearly designed for keyboard and mouse, using a controller made it more difficult than intended I think. (I still played through with a controller, because my cats don't let me game with a keyboard) The mechanics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I do recommend this game, there are issues I have with it. It is fun to go around and shoot enemies with the titular Gunbrella, the movement is pretty good in this game and it has some good pixel art. But I kinda just wish there was more to this game, some things would’ve benefited from more story focus, I find early bosses are a slog to fight (not hard, just take a while), and the gameplay got to its best when I was one shotting enemies. This felt closer to the trailer, I honestly wish…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is barely any game here One half of the game is actual gameplay and the other half is just plot, dialogues and backtracking to complete chores for NPCs. Making an already short game feel even shorter. It would have been fine if this was a game like Gato Roboto which was also short but barely had any dialogue or backtracking to artificially inflate the play time. I also REALLY don't like how you cannot use the D-pad to move and aim, instead you are forced to use the left joystick and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm giving this a "recommended" review because I think the product has value to a specific audience; I just don't think it hit for me but I feel like this is *definitely* someone's niche dream game. Artistically, the game really feels like it was originally a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game that someone went back and added a *ton* of detail to...but I could also see someone doing a "demake" of this for fun and it still being totally playable on old hardware. Sound effects were all passable,…

It follows our protagonist as he slugs through heaps of enemies and ultimately aims to defeat the evil blood cult "Cult-45". neutral · AI labelView post →Worst and easiest boss fights I've ever seen in a game. Overall I just feel like this game could have been so much more interesting in a lot of places if a few things had been designed differently/better. World feels shallow, exploration is not really a thing, progression is weird.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great little game. Kind of partly a 2d platformer, it's not really a metroidvania. But has some really fun movement and solid mechanics for doing combat or battles with enemies. Not super difficult on the default difficulty, honestly I think the boss that gave me the most difficulty was the 1st one when you're still building the muscle memory of what buttons to press and how to move around fluidly with the gunbrella and getting used to all of that still. Fun dialogue and a nice…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →awful game i was so excited for it when they announced it the graphics are nice the music is aight thats it. that's everything positive i can say about the game the story is random, there is no sense behind it, there are several jumps, no world building, no likable characters on one part of the game they give you several checkpoints, then theres other parts that have no checkpoints at all, you die, you have to do everything again the bosses are so damn bad the platforming is mostly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crunchy metroidvania. Your character's moveset is incredibly mobile; jump, pogo, parachute, and almost fly with your gunbrella. The gunbrella also doubles as a shield. Get the timing right and you'll parry your enemies attack back at them. The physics are as solid as the best Nintendo developed game. There's a lot of challenge to each segment, but the game mechanics can be forgiving. There's a lot of areas that don't reset when you go back to the save benches, so you can go back save/heal…

neutral · AI labelView post →I like what they've tried to do here and it's not for lack of effort, but doesn't quite hit the spot for me. The story/setting/world are nicely done, and the action isn't terrible but it is quite fiddly and frustrating a lot of the time. Controls needed to be more intuitive and responsive, and level design needed to make better use of the Gunbrella. Lots of better options at the same or lower price points: for an indie action-platformer with a cool, original mechanic, try Nuclear Blaze - it's…

I used to game at least 2 hours a day but it’s been hard these past 3 months. Hopefully Lies of P snaps me out my funk!
neutral · AI labelView post →For a quick review: This game is okay, pretty boring. Interesting mechanics but bogged down with millennial and woke writing. For a long review: I got this game because it looked interesting. I didn't look into the game before getting it which I regret deeply now after playing it for around 4 hours. So what happens. positive · AI labelView post →This game is pretty short and sweet, offering very nice feeling controls that feels fun to play and takes time to properly master. I wouldn't say this is a "metroidvania" but the movements feel reminiscent of it. It is, however, more story focused than action. The visuals of the game are very stunning and matches well with the story told within the game. A bit of information about the story and worldbuilding is sprinkled within but requires the player to be inquisitive enough to dig deep (and…

I pretty much enjoy anything they support or make. The company knows fun and engaging video games. I regret to inform everyone that this was not one of the games. As an experienced player I found Gunbrella to be too wordy, not enough action, boss fights were bland and easy (except for the last one), no new powers, the best weapon in the game is your basic weapon, and…
