GUNHEAD is a 3D reimagining of Cryptark that many fans find fun and strategic. [1][2][3] Some players criticize the floaty controls and lack of polish. [4][5][6] Several reviewers recommend buying Cryptark instead. [5][7]

Conceptually, it's a great and uniquely strategic game, just like Cryptark. The problem is — it's a very bad first-person shooter. It has all the common Unity pitfalls: everything feels floaty and sluggish, guns don't have any impact, enemies are anemic. As an added bonus, your mech constantly stumbles on terrain and phases through solid objects, making the whole experience feel like a clunky alpha test. Sadly, …

Worthy successor of Cryptark! The game is very fun, fast paced and it has a very cool visual style. The best thing about Cryptark and Gunhead is how the different ship systems interact together, making you have to carefully plan your route ahead and adapt to the situation as you go. Combined with prodedurally generated levels, it makes for a very interesting game.

For those who never played CRYPTARK, I feel like everything I said in my review of that game still applies here, whether or not you start with the first game: It’s a perfect balance between straightforward strategic planning and 3d shooter gameplay. It's strategic in a way that makes you feel accomplished for pulling off your plan of action in the right order, without getting bogged down in minutia. GUNHEAD carries …

Gunhead is to Cryptark what Risk of Rain 2 is to Risk of Rain.

I am really enjoying this game regardless of the valid concerns regarding the interface outside of mission. The core gameplay loop is the same as Cryptark: 1- Choose a destination based on mission parameters 2- Look at map upon arrival and make your own plan of action 3- Jump into action and be a badass while executing your own plan The main difference is that Gunhead is an FPS version of Cryptark so naturally some …

The actual developer, under contract, is Compile and gameplay is reminiscent of Zanac and Aleste. The game is a tie-in with Japanese mecha film Gunhed from the same year.

I barely did despite playing and reviewing it around the time it was released on the recommendation of Totalbiscuit. What I did remember, surprisingly, was Gunhead’s announcement trailer six years ago and my excitement to get into some vaguely Descent-like first-person shooting. Now, that has arrived and while it’s not quite Descent, it’s a good bit more than decent. Abbreviated Review: https://youtu.be/xI2F0AfiGAk A Pirate’s Life for Me…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy 'Cryptark' Instead I have purchased every game made by this developer and have enjoyed most of them. As a fan of 'Cryptark', I was skeptical of the move to an FPS design, but gave it a chance, thinking it might play a bit more like 'Descent' or similar shooters in three-dimensional space. Sadly, as others with critical reviews have stated, it just feels like a "bad FPS" with confusing design choices. I found the audio to be nonsensically mixed (it was nearly impossible to identify where…

The thing is It feels very chaotic, because of the enemies, the visibility and the distribution of the maps, so it becomes more frustrating in long runs. The objectives that one finds are quite a lot and fun to complete, but most of the tasks that give extra rewards are based on destroying things fast, NOT destroying…

neutral · AI labelView post →Short review: it's sluggish, stiff, and floaty. Just not fun. Long review: It's bad. The mech you control feels more like moving an intangible camera through a 3d scene. There's no weight or heft to anything you do. The tutorial introduces you to the jetpack as if it has a limited boost meter, but in reality it recharges so fast, it might as well not be there. Even if you somehow manage to drain the whole bar, it literally starts recharging the frame it empties, so you just stay hovering as…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly disappointing sequel to Cryptark, pretty much every change has been for the worse. First of all, it's heavily casualized: remember how in Cryptark you had to choose not only which weapons to bring with you, but also how much ammo? Not anymore, now weapon unlocks and their ammo are carried with you the whole campaign, finding a second copy of a weapon you already have fully refills its ammo (kinda, more on that later), and at every time while on a mission you can pause the game and…

Its presence can be felt while playing GUNHEAD not because you’re missing out on setup, but because GUNHEAD feels like a game boldly intent on taking advantage of its 3D space. Gameplay styles and traversal options created in fealty of this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not a finished game. It has a lot, but it is not finished. There is no polish. My main gripe is the UI. It's bad. The menus are clunky, even the order of the options on them feels wrong. Menu text has very little backing, so they're very difficult to use mid-game. The inventory feels cluttered and cramped, the level select map does as well. Shop text overlaps your money count. The differentiation between weapons in inventory, weapons available for purchase, licenses available for…

neutral · AI labelView post →A very average game. I already made a video review on it so I'm going to break it down into bulleted lists. Video Review: https://youtu.be/th27gLr50bs Issues: - Boring - Map design is ugly, lots of grey, lots of pipes, and lots of sheet metal. - Map design is confusing, it gets bad enough that I use the exit doors to go outside to avoid having to navigate the maps. - Rogue lite elements are limited to just new mechs and weapons - Very basic in terms of gameplay and relatively shallow. -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's OK, 6/10. I adored the original game, Cryptark, and there's nothing quite like it. It was niche but totally original. But among the saturated FPS market, there's not enough in Gunhead that stands out. It feels like the devs wanted to make a mass-appeal game, but didn't account for the masses sticking to what they know, while the ones most likely to play this are those who are looking for something really special. There's a few issues particular to the game too. Others have covered most…

neutral · AI labelView post →The short version of this review would be: Just buy Cryptark instead. But let me elaborate. Gunhead is essentially a 3D reimagining of its prequel Cryptark, which was a 2D game with largely the same gameplay, features and systems. Cryptark is a neat little game and the Idea of giving it verticallity or rather depth is consequently neat-er. And of course it works because it absolutely should. The Problem is that it doesn't do anything beyond that. It doesn't add much beyond the bare minimum…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ok so let me say, i am comparing this game to the dev team's previous game, Cryptark. . unskippable tutorials that take the controls away from you, one of the worst things a game can do . terrible diagetic menu system, i dont know why people cant just make a UI with some buttons these days . there are no unique mech abilities, all of them just dash with different jetpack types and hp values, no real "identity" to any of them anymore . the roguelike elements are mostly removed as far as i can…

neutral · AI labelView post →not sure how this is a 'mostly positive'. lets go point by point. the audio: is bad the gunplay: is bad the voice acting: is good, but good luck hearing anything the VA's are saying due to the aforementioned audio being poorly mixed all around the visual design: is passable. they have massively punched up the contrast of the screenshots on the store page and it looks a lot more flat in gameplay. misrepresentation at best, false advertising at worst. mouse smoothing: is present, and unwelcome…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As it is, it is unplayable. On my first run, fourth stage, an armor system spawned in space - soft-locking me in one way. Luckily i was able to wait for the shuffle system to cycle it back into the ship. Upon completing the level it dropped me through the floor, setting my movement to "home ship" controls but not staging the game forward. this forces me to back out, and i assume take a crap shoot of moving forward. This is a shame, because the game is very close to good. If only it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GunHead is actually a good game, if u played the game for the duration of all achievements, it does actually became a good game, you get the same vibes from Cryptark at certain point...but its unfinished, LORD, the game is unfinished and unbalanced...repeated weapon with different names easly breakable economy, awkward physics, dumb AI, difficulty only based on numbers, etc etc...I could go on on how Cryptark is a superior game in comparison, that it was a visually simpler game with it had a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you move the camera quickly from left to right (if you play with high mouse sensitivity for instance) everything is blurry. Fiddling with the in-game graphics options or disabling V-Sync didn't change this. There's a number of poorly made FPS and other first-person games that suffer from this problem, and it makes the experience unplayable for me.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Important Note: GUNHEAD stopped getting updates shortly after release and the devs have said that they moved on after bug fixes and localization so don't expect anything other than the launch content. CRYPTARK is an impressive indie game with some of the best visual and audio design i've seen in a long time. It is complicated, difficult, oppressive, and still holds up fantastically after a decade. GUNHEAD is a good first person port of CRYPTARK but a bad sequel. The entire point of GUNHEAD…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dissapointed. This is just blurry, bland, dumbed-down 3D version of Cryptark, which had, IMO, one of the best 2D graphics ever. The soundtrack is the only saving grace
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was very excited for this because I love Cryptark but couldn't get past 2 missions without bugs. Game hanging after a mission, then entered a room and couldn't fire (known bug apparently) that happened twice. Refunded but will get it again if they get it ironed out. EDIT: I noticed A LOT of the super positive reviews have 30min to 3 hrs of gameplay, even going back several months. This is odd considering this seems like the type of game you'd get 30-50 hrs out of if you really liked it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought this would be an expansion and improvement on CryptArk and have waited like 2-3 years for it to come out. But it is basically just CryptArk in 3D with no actual improvements. You know, I am actually quite the 3D over 2D enthusiast when it comes to gaming, preferring 3D fighters over 2D fighters, etc. With that said, I feel like the 2D version for some reason had more than the 3D version. Also, I am pretty upset this just plays out like a generic shooter and not like a 6DOF game, I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Crypark the spiritual successor to this game. I wanted to enjoy Gunhead, but after multiple attempts to get into it, I've decided to refund the game as it's a huge disappointment from someone who loves what they did with the first game. I'm also not a huge fan of this trend of popular 2d indie games doing 3d sequels, and in this case, it's not even a well done conversion to 3d compared to say Risk of Rain 2. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I have boomer brain. It's just not a title…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was looking forward to the sequel of Cryptark, Sadly had couple of bugs from the start to a hour of game play. The Main two that irked me were 1. You couldn't fire when entering a room, 2. You couldn't fire one of your weapons and would instead fire a different one. That made me realize do I really want to go through with this? Could use some more polish overall felt like early access, might come back to this in the future if things change for the better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved Cryptark, and still highly recommend that game. However this was not an upgrade to the original formula. If you're new to these games, just play Cryptark.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite the move to 3D and addition of bosses, this is a significant downgrade from cryptark. The first boss I encountered literally crawled into a corner of the arena and scrunched up as if it was terrified of me, and that was also the hardest one because it kept moving it's weak point around so I couldn't shoot it easily, the other ones were basically free. There are less systems to deal with, only 1 item slot for usable items, instead of finding new weapons to replace the ones we use up we…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i'm just barely not recommending this. i think the concept is great, i love mecha and power armor and roguelike dungeon crawl FPS games, but this game ends up coming across as kind of generic and soul-less. there's no real sense of 'being in the mech/armor', you have no cockpit and no feet if you look down, and the way that weapons seem to attach to your mech's shoulders instead of being held in robo-hands seems like a lazy cop-out to avoid hand animations. it might as well not be a mech/power…

This is literally, LITERALLY, just a 3d version of Cryptark. Everything is exactly the same. They're even still using the same comic page cinematics. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool idea, but the execution is kinda uninspired. It kinda gets boring after a few ships and I can't really tell why that is. I would have to play more to really put it into words, you see the dilemma? Seriously though, it's just tedious and repetitive busywork in what feels like the same terribly designed room over and over again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game mechanics have serious potential. but the management, lack of interesting story/world building and somewhat repetitive game play limits the "fun" factor heavily. overall this feels like a proof of concept demo and not a finished work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hesitantly reccommended with a bunch of asterisks. It's fun for a bit. I'm hesitant to even call it "good" because it's absolutely not a sequel as the devs claim. It's really not a new game at all. It's just Cryptark in 3D. However, it's definitely not bad so it just barely manages to squeak past my mild urge to give it a negative rating. They didn't even try to update the enemy designs, add new types of ship systems, or really do anything different at all. That's disappointing. It…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed Cryptark, although I found it incredibly challenging. Gunhead is a re-imagining of Cryptark in a 3D space that was, for me, a lot more accessible and fun, while still keeping the dense atmosphere, challenge, and deep planning before every mission, with arguably better gameplay. Highly recommend for a tactical FPS.

Gameplay: https://youtu.be/sBQrihtbFlE To earn money you raid spaceships. I was a fan of Cryptark and this is definitely a major step up. (They should have called it Cryptark 2: GUNHEAD or something, though.) The only bug I encountered so far is I got slammed into the hull so hard I clipped through it, then got stuck. I was able to get unstuck but still not sure if it was all my spamming jump/dodge keys, or if the game detected it after a bit and released me. I'm…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gave has a bit going for it but I don't personally feel its worth 20$. I got it on sale and I will be honest...I doesn't reaaaally do much different than competitors. The main thing I have a complaint about is running out of ammo...Which is tantamount to sin in a FPS roguelike where you can end up with 2/4 functioning guns and both suck at dealing with the mobs that swarm you. Some of the weapons like the cutter require you to stop moving and lock you in the direciton you fire...Which in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was alright but I preferred Tower of Guns and Mothergunship. Managing only 4 guns but having to buy ammo for them made for less thrilling gameplay, especially when I was only left with 1 gun or a melee weapon. While this could be a valid gameplay mechanic, it made it completely uninteresting for me, similar to weapons degrading and needing to repair them.

Focusing on objectives and taking down systems step by step instead of just mob clearing a room and going into the next feels new and what i enjoyed about Cryptark as well. However, as others have shown in their reviews, the game has time before it reaches it's full potential and become a worthy successor. However, progress is being made in the right…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →store page is misleading. this is not an actual sequel to cryptark. this is an adaptation of cryptark to FPS. unfortunately, there are better roguelite FPS options on the market nowadays. since gunhead just retreads the exact same ground as cryptark, it's impossible to not compare them, and to me, cryptark comes out on top in every way. the biggest sin this game commits, however, is that the gunhead mechsuit no longer actually has a gun for a head. this game should be titled "gunhand."
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Every review is going to mention Cryptark because Gunhead has the same fantastic core gameplay loop, just pushed screaming into 3D.
