What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 275 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (14,117 of 17,914 positive).
Players often compare IXION to Frostpunk in space, praising its immersive story and atmosphere. [1][2][3] Many find the game stressful and punishing, with a steep learning curve and unforgiving resource management. [4][5][6] Some reviewers appreciate the soundtrack and visuals but criticize the linear progression and balance issues. [7][8][9]

As mentioned by many, it's well designed, beautiful, and overall great, but the resourcing and development speed that campaign requires (even on easy setting) is completely insane. Cant enjoy the game while constantly stressing about huge resource requirements suddenly being thrown at you and running out of time. Definitely needs an endless mode, where you could play at your own pace and without all that pressure.

TL:DR It is indeed Frospunk in space. Is it good? Yes. Is it replayable? Yes, Most likely you will have to start over a couple of times, and even after you finish a run there are some great achievements to hunt. Is it fun? Yes, but it kinda overstays its welcome and gets rushy towards the end. Personal opinion I really liked the game, while the gameplay is almost the same as Frospunk, the story / setting is …

Please please PLEASE make a follow up, this is my FAVORITE GAME EVER. I'm a huge strategy game lover, sci-fi nerd, and living in space has always been a special interest of mine. This game scratches an itch for me that I don't see anywhere else. I used to play Stellaris for hours, but that game misses the deeply personal aspect this game has. When you're ruling over the galaxy it's easy to get lost in the scope, …

It's basically Spacepunk. Aka Frostpunk in space. Very cool soundtrack, and some pretty scenes here and there. Overall a bit more "tedious", a little less detailed, and a little more clunky than Frostpunk, I'd say, but in many aspects a near identical copy gameplay wise. Like a total conversion mod or something. If you like Frostpunk (1) and want more of that, with a little less of the tragic, desperate grit, and a …

This game. Stresses. Me. Out. I hate it. I know for a fact though that there are people who enjoy panic-inducing resource management civilization sims, and it is fantastic at doing that. Inducing panic, I mean.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Ixion received "mixed or average reviews", according to the review aggregator website Metacritic. PC Gamer called Ixion "[a]n enticing premise held back by uneven pacing and glaring technical issues", noting that it was "balanced and calmly elegiac busywork for the first few hours, even if Bulwark decides to keep the training wheels on a bit too long". However, they criticized the amount of time required to stay in place to complete chapter-closing tasks, "dousing your excitement at, ironically, the exact moment you yearn to go gallivanting somewhere new", as well as the effect of the game's production chain management on the sustainability of the layout of a player's buildings, opining…

60 of 430 · most liked firstPros: 1. A potentially interesting storyline, albeit very linear and somewhat predictable 2. A good soundtrack to immerse yourself in the atmosphere 3. There are many Easter eggs and references in the game Contras: 1. Strictly linear progression with no variety whatsoever. 2. Constant need to save before any event. Some game mechanics are completely illogical and were introduced solely to complicate the gameplay. You will have hundreds saves at the game's end. 3. The impossibility of…

You're building a resource production infrastructure inside a colony ship that's constantly falling apart while you rush to find a new planet home. store.steampowered.com/app/1113120/...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IXION was released 2 years ago today on PC, and I've finished it several times since. I love this sci-fi game. And it's coming to consoles in 2025!
positive · AI labelView post →With a heavy heart I have to deliver a thumbs down. The vibes are great, and I love the story. The depiction of FTL travel is probably the most evocative I've ever seen, and it was a powerful moment the first time I saw it. Unfortunately, the survival elements are too heavy-handed. As the game progressed I was forced to constantly tweak them to be more and more forgiving, until eventually I'd turned half of them off completely. The final straw was when, despite both reducing…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a difficult negative review for me. Because I like the "Frostpunk in space" gameplay, the music, the writing. But the game just takes too much of my time. And in a bad way. I do not know if this was an intentional "let's torment people with OCD" design, but all the buildings have such sizes that it is next to impossible to have a decent layout without spending insane amount of time for, in the end, a very little gain. The research that either drags forever or you sacrifice all the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This isn't fun. Every system fights against you, making the game worse and worse as you progress. Give you an example: Built a refinery, which overloaded the power. it exploded just as it was built, preventing me from shutting it's power off, causing a district to miss a meal... there was plenty of food, but these "people" would rather starve than eat in the dark... causing 365 people to go starving... and instead of eating when the power was back on... they continued starving for 5 more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this game until it's better balanced. There are finite resources, forcing you to almost be psychic in order to play the game at your own enjoyable pace. Otherwise, you are forced to rush through the story because if you build out your ship too much or too fast, you might have just completely screwed yourself on the necessary resources required to continue the game. Absolute peak frustration, almost as frustrating as Frost Punk 2. I now understand the other negative reviews.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ah, it's Random Game Saturday! Here's a lovely little bit of niche PS1: Star Ixiom! Spiritual successor to STAR LUSTER on the Famicom. Ixion adds lite-RPG and strategy to the mix with a hub base with NPCs and research and production. Lovely stuff!
neutral · AI labelView post →As much as I would like to recommend this game I just can't. I've tried to play it two times now and I just find myself annoyed by it repeatedly. On the plus side, the graphics and the sound are top notch. The story line is actually pretty engaging. Now for the bad. Your ship is basically trying to build 6 towns in a 6 different shoe boxes. Yes, you can flow materials between them, but even that is a constant tweak. Probably the biggest annoyance for me is that you shouldn't build…

positive · AI labelView post →I actually wanted to recommend IXION, because the core building gameplay really does make a strong first impression. The build loop is satisfying, the presentation is great, and the game looks and sounds excellent. The story also starts off pretty well. But the further it goes, the more it falls apart. By the final mission, the story completely lost me. Either someone seriously fumbled the writing toward the end, or I was suddenly too dumb to follow what the game was trying to do. Either way,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not mad. Please don't put in the newspaper that I got mad. Yesterday my wife said maybe I should play something else because this game seemed to be pissing me off. She was probably right but this game is so obnoxious I have to beat it. It's the most difficult basebuilder I've ever played (and I've played a few, Frostpunk or Against the Storm have nothing on this). The problem is what makes it both difficult and exhausting to play is the terrible UI, absurd micromanagement and Sisyphean…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a narrative expansion to Ixion. Paid DLC, whatever, I love this game. I've finished it four or five times now 😅
positive · AI labelView post →IXION is 75% of a good game and 19% of a bad one. If the devs had continued development after the release, then this could have been an amazing game. The core game play has so much potential, but the bugs, bad mission design, and a short story (it's only 5 missions) left me with a profound sense of dissatisfaction.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its a slog to get through, the difficulty on normal makes it so you either need to be a genius or the luckiest city builder around, slow and steady isn't an option even though the gameplay loop actively trys to death spiral you, cant finish. the vibes ok enough, next time design a gameplay loop that actually gives the players options. like dude it makes no sense to add a penalty to staying in a system when you also get punished for leaving a system. ♥♥♥♥ the crew, and ♥♥♥♥ the gameplay loop…

Long, brutal, unforgiving, and unforgettable. The story stays with you long after it ends. If you’re into space and heavy management survival games, you’ll love it. It is either a heaven-management game… or a literal hell of management. The soundtrack is incredible and elevates the entire experience — cold, emotional, and perfectly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, what can I say… I have mixed feelings about this game. I love city-builders like Frostpunk, especially in a space setting, but this game really frustrated me. The atmosphere is great, the concept is awesome, and the gameplay is engaging and addictive, but… How is it possible that in four damn years the developers still haven’t fixed the resource transfer bug between sectors? It’s incredibly frustrating. I eventually just dropped the game because the resource transfer logic is poorly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't overstate how strong the urge is to give Starsail an FTL jump sequence like the VOHLE drive in IXION. I just LOVE this sequence so much. But a 70-second cinematic for every single time you jump, in a game where you are on the run and as such need to jump around constantly, would be obscene.
neutral · AI labelView post →Although positioned as a city-builder, it's not quite that. You're building the ship, while doing some exploring and following a fun story--but it feels like a play-it-once-type game. What is worse, the game is filled with traps--things the game should explain but doesn't and then you get screwed. If a science ship is investigating a planet, it's stuck there until you complete the task. So if you try doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, you're screwed. That's especially true with the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not sure what it is about this title. I've tried to play it several times but have always glanced off, usually about the time of the second chapter. The pacing feels off. The resource management seems to have been very finally tuned so you don't have much room for error. The optional objectives you get given are often traps, but if you don't take enough of them then you are penalised. The presentation is good, but empty, relying on music and vague dialogue to pretend to be more than it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is really addictive, but unbalanced recource management are total killjoy. it takes 10 minutes to go from "I am doing great!"" to "lol you are toast, Jimbo", forcing you to lose HOURS of realtime because you ran out of alloys and iron in current star system. Inability to micromanage your fleet adds unnecessary difficulty to it, causing casualties in the hazardous systems. Overall game design is very clunky and you can easily bug your ships while dismantling/rebuilding stardocks.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am giving this game a positive review - although I will not play it anymore. Here is why: The game is well made and I did not encounter any bugs. It would be unfair to rate it negatively, it does well what it is supposed to do. For me, however, it is not a game I enjoy playing, because the gameplay progression is largely scripted - it is an interactive adventure, more or less. I enjoy sandbox games, no scrpted events, no goals to meet to progress. Here we are held by the hand and ushered…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun if you want a strategy game and building game put in space. Until you get double digits of hours into the campaign and you lose everything cause of some bug. Yes the game developers know about it and people are talking about it in forms. But there is no patch and unofficial fixes only work sometimes.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like it, but every time I tried to start again or replay I'm turned off again because the game is so finicky and punishing in basic areas like building space, storage, and even building/resource transportation speed. I dont mind hard games, and I often play them, but it feels like Ixion focusses on making all the wrong parts hard instead of adding challenge to the engaging parts. Plus, the science unlocks after tier 2 which are extremely important are very poorly signposted.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the best way to describe this is if i describe it as a book. It starts well with a bunch of heavy hitting scenes and decent direction. But goes off the deep end and starts to fall apart as the writer does not really know what to do next. The game concept is too large meaning, The games scope is too large, Meaning the game was not able to make a through-line of the experience and general plan. Very cool idea that's just a tad confused.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a genuinely unique game, but it comes with a steep learning curve, especially in the early hours. There are a lot of moving parts to manage, and it can feel chaotic until everything starts to click. Once you get past that initial hurdle, though, the systems begin to work together in a really satisfying way. I’ve seen several reviews recommending against this game, but I’d strongly disagree, particularly if you enjoy base-building games or narrative-driven experiences. The game has a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the Mesopotamian game I'm reading the myth about Ixion (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixion), who was SO UNBELIEVABLY ARROGANT AND STUPID, like, I can't even BELIEVE how arrogant and stupid he was, and I'm thinking I need to add some rules about what happens when a PC does something *that* dumb. Twice.
neutral · AI labelView post →WOW!! honestly just WOW!! this was amazing on all counts and has had me addicted all weekend. If you love city builders, or any sort of resource managment games this is for you. I would describe it simply as it scratched an itch I didn't know I had from games like frost punk and FTL Visualy 10/10 Musicaly 11/10 (HONESTLY THE MUSIC IS PHENOMINAL) Game mechanics 9/10 Plot 9/10 voice acting 10/10 I was not expecting to get so into this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still thinking about the resource management game IXION and how the mega-corporate Marduk Council is so arrogant and patronizing of nation-states that they're willing to destroy Earth and most of humanity just so they can become the masters of spaceborne ideologies.
neutral · AI labelView post →Game is extremely fun from what ive played but after completing the prologue the game tanks to 10fps with no fix. game has not been updated since 2024 to address the issue and official discord is in the consensus that "yeah its unoptimized sorry" sad to refund but incredibly unplayable after prologue
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed this game. In many reviews, you can read comparisons like "Frostpunk in space" or "a survival game in space." But in my opinion, this is not a very accurate comparison. It might seem that way after completing the prologue, but once you play through at least the end of the first chapter, you realize: this game is primarily about production and building the most optimal logistical chains under conditions of limited resources. The core gameplay mechanics felt very interesting to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a city builder where you can move a city around. The game is split in chapters where you visit a solar system and basically strip mine it before moving to the next one. The city-building aspect is well done. There could be some more quality of life features, but the game works fine without them. There is nothing revolutionary in here; you make food, gather and process resources, make sure to have enough workers and power to keep things running, and hospitals to deal with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the game shows potential, the overall experience is hindered by several design choices. The controls are not intuitive, requiring frequent trial and error before they feel even somewhat manageable. Gameplay quickly becomes repetitive, with limited variation to sustain long-term engagement. Additionally, the learning curve is steep, offering little guidance for new players, which may discourage those unfamiliar with the genre. The concept is intriguing, however there is a lot of work yet…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is for masochists. Here are some questionable game design decisions that make this game not fun to play. 1) Your science ship arrives at a planet. You interact with the planet, and you get some options what you can do there. One option is "leave the planet". You think "OK I'll come back later, I don't have the ressources to commit to this project right now". You choose to leave and no further interaction with the planet is possible because the interaction icon is now gone. WTF?! 2)…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a few games like that. Ixion is the colony on the move in space game, The Wandering Village is that on monster back, and there's an upcoming game like that on a train, but I can't recall the name right now and searching on my phone is a pain.
neutral · AI labelView post →Fun for the first few hours but starts to punish you really heavily for staying too long in one spot. Type of game where even with a lot of city builder experience, unless you know the events you will likely fail the first playthrough. Interesting story and mechanisms but too linear to be worth replaying in order to do everything right and succeed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hull Integrity Maintenance Simulator. I really wanted to play this game for a long time, since it has been announced. And when I finally found a time for it, it appeared to be a disappointment. It basically has the very same design issues as Frostpunk. There is only one successful path you need to figure out by replaying a lot the boring prologue. Before you will be able to find this one successful path - you will be left with lack of necessary resources literally all the time, waiting for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is difficult, just as many others say. It is not your typical city-builder simulator, the mechanics of finite resources and a constant 'ticking timer' make it much more stressful. The closest comparison is Oxygen Not Included: you literally have no option to just sit back and chill; you need to be doing something productive every single moment. I failed a couple of times and only managed to finish the game on my third attempt. If crisis management is your thing, this game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A space city-builder with survival aspects to it. Most of the game is spent juggling resource income, conversion, and spending (with power, food, and metal tending to be your biggest focuses) whilst you explore strange anomalies and jump from system to system aboard the world's most horrible starship. (Not in an insulting way, a literal one. Just turning the engine on is probably a warcrime). Overall I enjoyed it as a fan of city-builders; if using a guide or making sure Morale stays high…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing concept, art, and especially music. I love the idea of a huge arkship carrying the last of humanity through space. But the gameplay ruins the experience for me. It starts off well, but the permanent negative debuffs from just playing the game stack up to crazy levels that quickly became unmanageable. Tiny mistakes I'd made hours ago in a completely different chapter suddenly appear out of nowhere and send my ship into a death spiral. It felt like I was being punished for not playing…

neutral · AI labelView post →Pros: - Insanely good soundtrack - Looks great. with plenty of attention to detail - Fun progression and interesting mechanics to pick up, plays differently enough from other games of this genre (closest one is probably Frostpunk) - Challenge level appropriate to be engaging without being stressful Cons: - Definitely a difficult one to get started on, you will spend the first couple of hours trying way too hard to manage things perfectly and inevitably fail because you weren't able…

neutral · AI labelView post →I like this game in concept. Really calls to mind the Arc Ship program from the Children of Time book series and I am all about that. The desperation, hopelessness, and ruggedness of the situation is great. However. It's balanced around you already knowing what you need to do 5 steps ahead, without ever giving you the ability to plan or any information at all. You need nearly perfectly planned out construction layouts and build orders to not fall into a death spiral, but it gives no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IXION is an atmospheric and visually Sci-Fi simulator, which in reality turns out to be not a deep strategy, but a rigidly scripted puzzle. The main advantage of the game is an excellent puzzle to optimize the limited space of six station sectors. The main disadvantage is catastrophic linearity and crutches of complexity: the game infuriates with stupid logistics between warehouses, puts pressure on an artificial timer in the form of constant wear and tear of the case and punishes for a good…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of my favorite games. I love the gameplay, the mechanics, and the space theme of running a colony ship. I just wish there was an free roam mode or something. the story is very linear. It is a lot of fun, but get old the third or fourth time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good game but I ended up using a guide on placement of buildings in sectors because the game is too punishing if you go in blind. The game feels like it's not intending you to fail and replay the game but it snowballs really badly into unwinnable situations way too easily. However, with a little guidance the gameplay is fun and it's a neat little storyline.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd put a "mixed" recommendation if I could. The game is like frospunk in space, but while the start is pretty cool, the more you unlock the more tedious it becomes to manage, some thing are not very well explained, and logistic quickly become a nightmare. The games become quite grindy by the end aswell The stories end is kind of underwhelming aswell. Besides these issues, there are a lot of good ideas, the setting is nice, most of the mechanics are nice even if not very well implemented,…

positive · AI labelView post →Kind of boring. A lot of waiting around gathering and processing resources. Entropic elements feel very contrived and consist almost exclusively of the hull constantly degrading and accidents occurring. The rate of decay and frequency of accident occurrence are both so high that it completely breaks the suspension of disbelief. There are some morale and stability mechanics too, but so far, 6.5 hours in, they're not a factor. I really wanted to like this game, but have to rate it a solid…
