I'm conflicted on the game but ultimately say I can't recommend it at the current price. I've played 6 hours and just finished the game and this was with me scavenging side areas alongside doing main objectives, for me all that is left is to finish levelling my classes and weapons but the prestige system is rough to play around. Spending all this currency on weapon attachments and tier upgrades for damage etc then …

I want to recommend this but I can't, it REQUIRES a constant internet connection just to play solo. If I want to play single player, why is a constant internet connection required? I travel a lot for work, I have a laptop, sometimes I stay places that have crap internet connection. Moreover, what about others who are deployed or working or living in places without perpetual high speed net connections? The game …

Toxic Commando sits right alongside L4D2 and WWZ no question now. What started strong in beta has fully delivered at launch. This is a chaotic, over-the-top zombie horde shooter cranked to 11, with tight gunplay, satisfying progression, and pure nonstop carnage. The personality really shines. There’s a clear love for classic action horror, and yeah, that John Carpenter vibe hits hard. The game doesn’t take itself …

Players who liked John Carpenter's Toxic Commando talk about good vehicle segments and diverse missions; those who didn't talk about lack of content; only a handful of similar maps. Which matters more to you?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Samantha Nelson of Polygon gave the game a positive preview, writing "I found all the game's controls intuitive and swapping between the many weapons was highly satisfying, leaving me eager to try more along with experimenting with other classes". Luke Addison of The Thumb Wars also gave a positive review, summarizing that "it's as mental and over-the-top as it sounds and should be". It was a profitable project for Saber Interactive but its overall sales were disappointing for Focus Entertainment. It is okay for the price. Pro gamer tip: Disable crossplay if you’re tired of watching evolutionary theory being disproven in real time and wondering how a bunch of Cro-Magnons got access to the internet. It’ll also save you from muting people on open mic blasting music, coughing, sneezing, blowing their noses, burping, farting, and arguing with their girlfriends. Yes, every one of those is a real experience I’ve had.

UPDATE: Well, ♥♥♥♥ me. I am bumping my score to 3.5 from 3. It’s apparent that this is more than just a weekend game. I came to realize —and I’m glad I kept playing— that Very Hard is the sweet spot for difficulty in this game. The driving is definitely far more than decent. The terrain plays a huge part, and you can pull off wild stuff (including convoys) that you couldn’t possibly do in single-player. Medic skills are incredibly satisfying once they’re fully leveled up. As expected,…

could be a good game, I really enjoy it a lot, however, they need to remove the inactivity kicking mechanic if you are playing in a solo lobby, life happens and you can't always be at your pc, some people play solo because they know they will be called away from the PC mid game and need to be able to walk away without having to worry about being kicked for inactivity, it is extremely frustrating to lose on a mission you worked really hard on just because real life called you away. Well, first of all, I gotta to say I'm really scared of the positive reviews for this game. Why? They just show that many people have played so many bad games recently that they have adapted to the thought that unfinished and shallow games are the benchmark, the height of game development. When people write stuff like "This game is gorgeous," "The game is diverse," "The voice acting is badass"... Well, yeah, people can have different opinions, but these are very questionable statements. To…

Why the f is this online? If you can't spare the whole time needed for the mission to be completed even if you play privately on your own then you can not play. Because it is still online and if you are afk for a moment it kicks you out. Who's brilliant idea is this?

Amazing game that has tons of potential and is very fun but is extremely starved of content. There is only 8 missions which can be done in a single day. After that there’s not much you can do besides play on higher difficulties. Not many options as far as cosmetics for your characters either. I’d wait this one out and let the content build up before buying.

I think the best thing I can say about John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is that it absolutely feels like the kind of game John Carpenter would want to play. it's exactly the kind of brainless thing you spend a stoned saturday afternoon blowing up zombie guts in before the NBA games start.

Good game. It's fun, gorgeous, bloody, and brutal. The missions are diverse and quite original for the genre, there is a massive arsenal and adding those little Mudrunner-style vehicle segments in the mud is seriously cool. I definitely enjoyed this more than Back 4 Blood or WWZ. This game is basically a love letter to zombie co-op at a reasonable price. I imagine Carpenter himself in his gaming chair having a blast playing it. Hell yeah.

As much as I enjoyed playing this game when it launched, coming back now to get a face full of what I can only see as this game's "Season Pass" is an incredibly sour note. FOMO has no place in games, especially PvE ones.. not worth wasting any more of my time here.

Recommend? I do recommend playing the game, but not purchasing it. The game is fun, but the playtime is abysmal and an insult, especially considering that "Saber Interactive" used to be criticed for their low content on their horde games, up until Space Marine somewhat broke that chain. 30 Minutes of gameplay, that is it. This game is short, maybe 5 hours, but that short playtime is already stretched out by the map exploration, cutscenes and matchmaking with loading screens. Just how and…

Devs decide to kill the game by nerfing every class, people arent even playing this game as it is. It's boring, you play through 8 levels that look identical just to unlock hard mode, then you can play the same 8 levels but on hard mode. It's not worht the price. DEVS WHY DID YOU KILL YOUR OWN GAME??? Horde mode? Nope. New skills or weapons? Nope. Nerf every class? YES! HUH? Make it make sense. Make the game fun. Too late for that though.

Impressions after 6 hours of playing ( TL; DR at the bottom ): Although I was enamoured with the beta test, I tried ( unsucessfully ) to refund this game at the 6 hour mark. The Positives: - The visuals and monster design are gorgeous. - I find the dialogue funny, and often highly entertaining ( an unpopular opinion ). - The characters are endearing ( an unpopular opinion ). - The level design for Map 1 ( the elevator shaft ). - One of the maps forces you out of the vehicle, to carry a…

I played it and I do not think 39,99 is justified. The good first. The graphics are solid, sound design is good, effects look nice, and the environments do their job well. The whole idea with the car being the squad anchor is also genuinely cool and gives the game its own identity. Classes seem decent too. Different perks and roles at least give some variation. The problem is that the rest of the game feels undercooked. The writing is modern millennial slop pretending to be old school…

Even with friends it's a short but grindy game. Load mission and drive around the map collecting thingamabobs. Head to objective, use scrap to build defenses or grab special weapons, then hold out for X amount of time. Much success. Hopefully they'll take advantage of the huge hordes of enemies and add in a horde mode and/or a survival mode for a bit more replayability.

Once you finish the campaign it is hard to find the urge to keep coming back. It is a shame because I love the core gameplay loop but the levelling up everything isn't very fulfilling. So I just don't think it is worth the price right now but if this is anything like world war z and space marine 2 in 2 years there will be a great game with plenty of content

Just like WWZ the potential is there. There is a really cool game that could have been... Graphics are great, weapons feel good, adrenaline rush fighting mobs.. But just like WWZ in my opinion, none of the systems seem to be fully fleshed out... In WWZ it works better because the maps are smaller and there is not as much to do, but with the open map and a bunch of other half baked systems it just makes it all so much worse... Why cant I place defenses where I want? Why use crappy guns? Where is…

A great co-op game that can be finished in a single weekend, with the main focus being replaying it on higher difficulties. It’s a mix of Back 4 Blood (Left 4 Dead), World War Z, and State of Decay. The first because it’s frenetic and features four team members with zombies everywhere in traditional post-apocalyptic environments; the second because at the end of each stage there is a horde moment, with the objective of defending the location from massive waves of zombies, using equipment like…

Take the swarm tech from WWZ and Space Marines 2, add in the mud and winch system from the MudRunner series, and then include an excellent synth based soundtrack to go alongside fun gameplay, and you've got yourself John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. Really fun zombies slaying co-op FPS. I can't believe this game turned out to be better than Back 4 Blood, Killing Floor 3, Black Ops 7 zombies and WWZ. With John Carpenter's Toxic Commando you'll get good gunplay, sick gore effects and massive zombies swarms. A major leap forward for zombie games and a clear improvement over World War Z. Graphics: The graphics aren’t amazing, but they’re perfectly serviceable. Up close they can look a bit flat and uninspired, yet it doesn’t really hurt the experience because visuals aren’t what make this game shine, and for what it’s trying to do, the graphics get the job done. Audio: The audio is decent; not exceptional, but perfectly fine for what the game needs. Controls: The controls feel smooth and easy to…

People compare this game to L4D because hordes of zombies, but that doesn't feel right to me. Sure, yeah, there are hordes, and they are in fact composed of zombies. But to me, the gameplay contained within John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is most similar to something more like Deep Rock Galactic. There aren't many modes of progression or personalization in L4D. Similarly, those games are very on rails compared to the 'open world' pockets of procedurally generated Hoxxes IV. There's no class…

I understand it's a zombie horde shooter, but the writing is like nails on a chalkboard. I can not stand this millennial-style humor with everything being a quip of some sort. These writing tropes of everything being full of irony needs to die, Even when John Carpenter’s films were campy, they were still written in a way that didn’t feel obnoxious or forced. I used to like this game, I really did. I've played it for 200 hours, most if it in the first 3 weeks of launch. But the player base has turned mean and idiotic. Too many games in a row have been ruined by one person killing everyone then leaving the match. It has a good core mechanics and can be fun to play. but it is way overpriced for what it delivers and has leaned to heavily into grinding out rewards over providing a fun gameplay loop. The cap your meta currency at 100,000 and you need 30k to upgrade weapons. Each individual part is another 10k+. So you are either using the same maxed out weapon over and over and you have nothing to spend the currency on, or you try new weapons and are starving for it the entire time. DRG or Helldivers…

Genre - FPs with vehicles co-op horde shooter People can't decide if this is 70% or 80% liked. For me this is a 7/10 game. It does the horde shooter mechanic fine. But I'm not seeing anything exciting, except maybe the cheesy 80s/90s dialogue, and it seems to run fast and smoothly on my old girl. Not regretting my purchase and co-op has been fun. HEAR YE, HEAR YE! Another obituary for another Potential Game! I'll try and make this short, but: I loved this game, I played it so much on Normal, where all the guns felt RIGHT, I even praised this game for making SMGs feel good, alongside with the horde tech which really, really needs to be seen more. Now, I don't know what happened. I'm using a maxed HAMR-17 with the most damage I could get out of it and Normal just barely feels fun. Other guns (which are also maxed) feel like a miserable…

Not enough maps and the new game mode and weapons are terrible. How about a horde mode with waves and a base to defend?

Almost 0 microstransactions (Most cosmetics are currently attainable with in game currency) Smooth gameplay, with satisfying, weighty weapons, slick driving physics, good enemy density/variety. Some small potential negatives; non-impactful, but serviceable story/world building, not a huge amount of content, but enough to justify the cost with good replayability and confirmation of plans for more in the future. Overall I would say it as a strong initial impression and would probably rate it…

Probably only my 5th or less review I've done in 20+ years. Soon as I logged in, I saw skins. I went, ah ♥♥♥♥, a microtransaction game. -- No. The only DLC "skin", is gold, that's it. That's the only color. EVERY skin, color, and inbetween, is earned in game through ingame currency, unlike GTA V online, is actually really fast and wildly easy to obtain. They understood the assignment. I wish there were more diverse skins and unique stuff, but, that's why the future is the future. Is the…

This game is an absolute blast! I have not had such a great zombie shooter experience in a long time. The aesthetics and atmosphere are amazing, the weapon customization is excellent, and the replayability is surprisingly strong. It even includes drivable vehicles, which makes it even more fun. For this price, it is easily 10/10 zombie heads.

JOHN CARPENTER'S TOXIC COMMANDO may not beat the genre's greats, but it's still a fun ride. Read the Bloody Disgusting review: bloody-disgusting.com/video-games/...

This game is pretty fun, better than WWZ. I just don't understand why you can't pause when playing solo with bots. That trend is so annoying.

Sitting at currently 100+ hrs and will wholeheartedly say this was the Zombie Shooter game I was waiting for. The gun customization, character building and just general gun/gameplay are so enjoyable whether you are playing solo w/bots or a group. Sure there may be some bugs here and there, but with all the patches coming you could see them disappearing. I can see people being wary of prices in this current age and wait for sales however it does feel quite worth the asking price.

I was expecting yet another 4-player coop slop, but Toxic Commando surprised me (in a positive way). It is far from spectacular, but that shouldn't be expected from a mid-budget AA game for $40. Otherwise, it is a decent shooter with interesting mechanics and plenty of exploration across wide-open maps. I had a lot of fun while playing the demo, which had only one map. The full game has 9 maps, each offering high replayability. Update The more I play it, the more I like it. While playing on…

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando: I mean, it's Left 4 Dead with a car? It's not bad (in fact parts of the combat loop work quite well and I feel like it would be even better with real friends) but I can already tell this is gonna get dragged for an extreme case of Marvel-writing-itis.

The battle pass is awful. As usual, they’ve taken the worst of the worst; tying specific weapon types to difficulty levels, locations, and enemy types is a design choice on par with some of the stratagems in *Space Marine 2*. Your game isn't good enough to warrant living in it, and naturally, you haven't given a thought to people who can only play a couple of hours a week. I used to enjoy logging in because I knew the content wasn't going anywhere, but now I see no point in spending even twenty…
