Players widely praise the game's stunning hand-drawn art and authentic Icelandic voice acting. [1][2][3] Some players recommend the game on sale for its atmosphere, despite frustrating gameplay. [3][4][5]

Visuals aren't everything The art is amazing. The soundtrack hits just right. The native Icelandic spoken within the game is such a nice touch. The scenery is beautiful and diverse and my god do they present Norse mythology so well. Not only is the depiction of Jotunns really creative, but it presents the idea of different realms so elegantly. Each Jotunn is tied to their respective realm, and before you get to …

A beautiful canvas that’s a chore to play. Not Recommended Jotun: Valhalla Edition is one of the most visually stunning games I have ever seen. The hand-drawn art is breathtaking, the scale of the bosses is awe-inspiring, and the authentic Icelandic voice acting creates an atmosphere that is second to none. Unfortunately, once you stop staring at the scenery and actually start playing, the experience falls apart. …

I recently decided to give Jotun a review after completing it years ago. While I didn’t remember all the details, the stunning art and atmosphere was something that stood out for me. The hand-drawn visuals are simply gorgeous, and they really bring the Norse mythology to life in a way that feels both epic and intimate. The voice acting also made it that much better. The boss battles are a standout feature. Each …

Buy it on sale due to the frustrating combat. Otherwise, gorgeous visuals, Nordic tongue, and jaw dropping art in this game is well worth the purchase.

As a game designer, I'm delighted to see everyone on that spectrum having fun and excitedly making up new characters and mech builds. Sparks joy. #MörkBorg compatible #mecha #ttrpg KSQ2

It helps support the game dev process for Jotun, and keeps me housed (hopefully). Have at look! sebastianbarth.bigcartel.com/category/jot...

neutral · AI labelView post →Arts, dialogues and music are good. The gameplay, however, is terrible. Your character is slow, and most of the levels are about explorations more than fighting enemies. The levels often feel tedious to explore, and not very fun to complete. It could have used more enemies and interactions with the level, at least. But a faster character with a more aggressive fighting style would have been so much better... Then, you get to fight Jotuns and ultimately Odin. The boss fights are ok'ish for…

To match their enthusiasm I, uh concocted a mini lore video to prime the new story arc. That's normal GM behavior, right? #jotun #mecha #mörkborg #ttrpg

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this for about $2, which is the only reason I won't refund it. This is almost not even a game. That doesn't mean there wasn't passion here though... in fact quite the opposite. But just not for a game. It's kind of like someone said "hey, wouldn't it be cool to have a story with really unique music, and authentic icelandic voiceovers? We could get deep into Norse myth in a way that others haven't, and really show off the beauty of that ancient religion!" And they did just that...…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did two bosses (forest and mines) and I just don't care to go any farther. The exploration is slow and tedious, in part because the character is slow, but also because the camera never seems to show enough or be looking at the part of the level I need to see. Levels are long and maze-like, but also often empty. Much time is spent running around looking at nothing. The map is of almost no use at all. It doesn't show your current location, so you have to guess based on the rough shape of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A beautiful game that will test your patience to the limits. This is the slowest-feeling game I've ever played. I've played walking simulators and adjusted to the committal jumping and whipping of the original Castlevanias. I've played frustrating Souls-like games. But never in any of those did I get hit so many times while not paying attention because I was moving my character across an empty landscape and then got randomly hit out of nowhere. And never in my time have I felt like a…

neutral · AI labelView post →Games come in many shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of challenge and with an almost infinite number of design decisions to be made in their construction. Jotun spectactularly fails in what should be the number one objective of any game - is it fun or enjoyable to play? Poor level design, bad animations, gratuitously random level events and fatuous boss fights are not my idea of a good time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game, but It's a real chore to play. The movement is sooo slow.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is looks very nice , however the gameplay is awful. It consist of 90% "exploration" in here you really discover health increases, new "skills", and more uses of those "skills". Then it is 10% boss fights. This boss fights are fun, they are not mechanically hard but they are a good visual experience, and is the best parts of the game. Now, this game is tedious you move like a slug, and THERE IS NO SPRINT BUTTON. The only way to go faster is to use your a limited skill that you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful art sitting on tedious gameplay. Jotun: Valhalla Edition is drawn beautifully, and the atmosphere that it's able to produce is extremely well done. Pan-out shots serve their purpose really well, as they make you realise every time the sheer absurdity of the enemies that you are facing and the environments that you are exploring. Voice acting pairs really well and adds to the experience. The UI and controls are also clean. And that's about all that's enjoyable in this game. I wasn't…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No amount of art can compensate for poor gameplay I got the impression that the game was supposed to be a boss rush game, but there's so much exploring empty and unrewarding environments inbetween that it's not worth the effort. The art looks nice and clean and the boss animations look gorgeous, it looked like a lot of effort was put into it. The gameplay however feels sluggish and the movement outside of combat would benifit from a sprint ability to speed up exploring/ backtracking. I am…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had left this game behind after 0.7 hours back then, because I tried proving myself vs. the 1st Jotun in the game, but I felt heavily limited/'h4nd1c4pp3d' by the third person; i.e. the slow, clunky movement, but above all the stuck-in-animation-(heavy)-attack-waiting-time-before-effect ... Instead of difficult, I figured it would only be unfair instead! Now, due to some recent talk about Greek & Norse mythology with a friend, I felt a certain attraction to this game again and this time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game so let me say I would finish the game if it wasn't so slow. This is an exploration game with occasional combat, but it only has combat abilities and nothing to help explore... at least just give the player the ability to sprint when there are no enemies around. Sad that the care, passion and effort that went into the art is ruined by the lack of mechanics that would make it enjoyable to experience the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs dont you understand that you need to create a reasonble map location? I dont want to waste my time trying to decipher where am I. That game looks amazing but I not in the mood to keep walking around
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Folks bringing up Angrboða's ethnicity in GoW: Ragnarok. Again. I'm Asatruar. Actual Norse Heathen. If you want to talk accuracy in this game vis a vis Aesir, Vanir, and Jotun representation, maybe don't flash your racist ass by focusing on the LEAST inaccurate point. 😘
neutral · AI labelView post →Game offers few hrs of simple puzzle quests, few satisfying bossfights, lots of exploration. Graphic is beautiful, so is the music and great Norwegian voiceacting. Flaws: -Short pause after rolling is annoying as hell. - slow movement overall - map in pause menu is kinda weird idea - Polish version has awful font that not covers Polish special letters :/

positive · AI labelView post →(3 hour non-completion review) I'm dropping Jotun, not because it's a bad game... However, because it's just not a game for me I realized something in my 3 hours of playing and once I realized this it made the game a chore more than something fun. The bosses (the two I fought) are complex and will require some skill. If I could improve the mechanics of this game I'd do one of the three: Add a run button, remove the dodge roll pause effect, or lower the time on the heavy attack by .5 seconds.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mech Borg was taken a while back, and Mek Borg launched a couple weeks after I initially thought to make a mecha game, but I'm happy with Jotun as a title. I'm intentionally trying to set Jotun apart mechanically from MB, make it it's own beast. So a new naming convention seems fitting.

neutral · AI labelView post →TLDR: This is a good exploration game, that features 6 major boss fights. It's not terribly long, and it's chill apart from having to deal with a some clunky features in the battle system. I enjoy this game- it's relatively chill, up until you hit the different area bosses. You can complete each area in any order, so if you want to farm all the health and ability upgrades before doing the bosses, you can. The levels are neat, with some lore spread throughout. The music and voice over are…

neutral · AI labelView post →Devs spent so much time making the game look pretty, they forgot to make it fun to play. So many devs' hubris is that they make a giant overworld that is beautiful and colorful, and they just sit there staring at what they made and drooling over how great they are for having made such a pretty world. Then when it comes to actually making a fun game they fail. If your idea of fun is to slowly (and I mean sloooowly) walk around a giant map, and slooooowly lift your weapon into the air to hit…

neutral · AI labelView post →I do recommend this game on sale--though if Steam allowed for a 'meh' option I would give it a solid 'meh'--but with a few caveats. This is a game that does not hold your hand. There is no tutorial. You immediately have to go into the pause menu to check out the controls just to see what you're capable of (I got no prompt about how to use the first ability you get, so I went looking for how to use it). You have to sense your way around the map (which is also only viewable via pausing) and are…

Gorgeous game visually and musically, and the animators very obviously put in work, but the gameplay can be a little tedious at times. While it's short enough that it never gets repetitive or dull, I was starting to feel a bit tired of the game towards the end of my run.
