If you don't mind a lazy company disrespecting you in your face, then go ahead and buy this. The devs have known of certain bugs for 3 years now (63/64 chests bug, runes not counting, special outfit not appearing, achievements not popping, levels not unlocking), and they haven't provided a single fix since. Kao the Kangaroo was a franchise I remembered from my childhood, particularly Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, which I originally played years ago. Coming back to the series with this modern reboot, I expected a simple platformer that would preserve the identity of the older games while modernizing the visuals and controls. In some ways it succeeds, but in others it feels like the game lost sight of what made Kao …

Kao the Kangaroo is a great example of a game that would benefit from a "thumbs sideways" review option. It gets a thumbs up, but just barely, and with a few caveats. Let me explain. Kao is undoubtedly a charming little 3D platformer. I say this having never played the classic Kao games from the "before" times. I have absolutely zero nostalgia tied to this series, but I do think this version of Kao serves a specific …

Kao the Kangaroo is a mixed bag. It's very close to being a great game but the bugs, jankiness, and general lack of polish in several areas brings the experience down. Regardless I think there's enough to enjoy here that I do recommend it overall. In a lot of ways, this is the best game in the Kao series. It's got the best hub worlds by a long-shot, there's more things to do within them and more reason to explore …

67% of the 180 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Kao the Kangaroo. The complaint that keeps coming up: bugs and collision issues persist after years. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Kao the Kangaroo received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received fair approval, being recommended by 44% of critics. Destructoid gave the title a 7 out of 10 and praised its scope, character designs, art style, controls, level design, and stage backgrounds, while taking minor issue with its story and voice acting. Game Informer lamented the game's difficulty, overworld design, abilities, and technical issues while comparing it unfavorably to the Mario, Crash Bandicoot, and Ratchet & Clank franchises. Hardcore Gamer felt that the level design was "easily the biggest highlight" but similarly…

Now, the exact reason why we were digging escapes me. But we often did a lot of digging. Kids—particularly boys—like to dig. It's just fun. Started with sandboxes. But sadly, that's where the praise ends. The voice acting, especially Kao is painfully cringey and really pulls you out of the experience. The game itself isn't terrible, but at best, it's just okay. Definitely wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a die-hard fan or playing purely for the visuals. Honestly, the second game remains the only truly…

positive · AI labelView post →After having acquainted myself with the Kao trilogy prior to the reboot, I knew what the games were: they were a set of mediocre platformers that copied their classmates' homework but with soul and passion put into them. So what is the 4th game like? Surprise, surprise, its still mediocre, but with the caveat that its a recent title from 2022. My theory on how this came to fruition is because of the rising trend of 90's / 2000's PlayStation games being remade with new graphics or just outright…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having played it to full achievement completion I can say with certainty that it's... okay. I'm sorry that I can't be more generous but it is rather bland. While it is a vast improvement to the franchise, graphically it's whimsical and pleasant, mechanically it's stale. It's solid, don't get me wrong, stage design is nice and well thought-out, however a few dozen times throughout my playthrough I've questioned design choices, awkward puzzles and the assumption that you're supposed to simply…

But woof, this was not a good impression. To start with the good, this game has a great artstyle and execution, very reminiscent of Crash 4 with all the strong shape language, vibrant colours, and angular characters. Great to look at, and your character doesn't get lost in the environment. Unfortunately, I think that's all the main praise I have…

If I invert my camera, I invert all of it, not half of it. Whats the point of that? So into Steams Bigpicture to change the controllersettings there. Good start. I hate when games only let you change one axis. Its a normal 3d platformer, nothing special about it. It controls very well! If you like 3d platformers, you're probably going to like this game! However, This game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Throughout my playthrough of Kao the Kangaroo, I went back and forth on whether or not I would actually recommend it countless times. At the conclusion of the original version of this review, I somewhat begrudgingly ended up giving it the thumbs up overall because despite its flaws I did have some fun with it. However, after going back to mop up some collectables in the main game and suffering through the majority of the Break the Roo'les DLC (which I didn't finish because I died twice to the…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's a solid, nostalgic platformer! The difficulty level is easy though the levels can be a little long. As others have said, the voice acting is god-awful and the story isn't anything amazing but if you can ignore those things, the gameplay itself is good and the graphics aren't too shabby either. You can probably finish the story in 7-8 hours but it may take 11-12 to grab all of the collectibles.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre at best. It’s one of the blandest platformers I ever played. The voice acting and dialogue in particular are just horrendous. Especially the voice actor for the main character does such a terrible job that I can’t even tell if it’s inexperience, a dialect, or him just having a nasal speech. I don’t know why they couldn’t get proper voice actors for this. But they seem to have been aware of how awful it was, hence why there is no voice-acting in the DLC. Aside from that, the game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not great, but it's not really terrible but I am biased towards Eurojank games but it was a fun and short platformer game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game tries to be hard like old platformers were, but ultimately it fails. You will keep failing jumps one after another not because of lack of skills, but because of bad camera angles, glitches where your character just doesent grab or you will be unlucky and get shot down by some enemy. Graphically game looks okay, but gameplay wise.. its not very good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun little game. The story is somewhat silly and you will very soon question yourself how dumb someone can be. Also you may expect a plot twist or two in certain scenarios but that's okay. After all it is a game also meant to be played by kids so I guess it is fine though. Gameplay wise it's actually pretty creative in some levels. Even though I expected the coins to be one-time collectables like in other Kao games. But that is fine with me. Also it was sometimes a bit too easy to get…

It's silly, it's inventive, the game worlds are varied and gorgeous, and there's stuff to collect under every single nook and cranny everywhere you can see in all the worlds. Packed to the brim with awkward english and extremely dated meme and pop culture references for the sake "comedy". I only ever laughed at how bad it was. The character design is great, but as many have pointed out, neither the voice acting, nor the dialog/plot is enticing at all. I love a good platformer collectathon. That part is kinda achieved. It's not even the world/level design which is the definition of fine and nothing more. It's that what they got wrong is the pure essence of what a platforming title is, which is the movement: it's slow and inconsistent, doesn't control well and bugs extremely easily, bringing you to sometimes pretty much teleport between spots due to hidden momentum values or something like that (normal…

The protagonist's sister goes after their missing dad, and then she goes missing too. This leaves our kao alone to find his missing family members, with his dad's magical (cursed) boxing gloves. This is great. I wish the story delivered this. The writing falls pretty flat, none of the characters are developed, and there's some pretty terrible…

It feels good enough to control for the most part (a few quirks here and there like the swingshot being too volatile), graphically it looks beautiful. Reminds me of the Spyro remakes with how shiny and cartoony it looks. The music is pretty good, some tracks are especially catchy.
