Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 190 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,950 of 2,078 positive).
Players widely praise the game as a faithful homage to Donkey Kong Country. [1][2][3][4] Many enjoy the tight controls, level design, and challenge. [5][1][3][6] Some reviewers criticize late-game auto-scrolling levels and repetitive boss fights. [7][8][9][10]

Great graphics and good controls, but unfortunately annoying level design where most of the later levels have time pressure like rising water, a ghost hunting you down or the game turning into an endless runner. But the worst offender are the annoying and extremely boring boss fights where you have to evade all kind of crap then hit the boss once, then do it two more times again. And if you mess up you start from …

I completed this game along with all it's achievements a few years ago, and it still hasn't left my mind. This game plays just like Donkey Kong Country Returns. The OST is great, the level design is perfect, and the movement options Kaze a real treat to control. I personally enjoyed trying to go through the levels as fast as possible for the time trial modes because it was rewarding to constantly earn better medals …

Hey kids, do you love the Donkey Kong Country series? Shut up! Of course you do! Let me tell you about this little game called Kaze and the Wild Masks. It’s pretty obvious what this game is going for. The moment you start playing, you can feel the inspiration from classic platformers. The tight controls, colorful levels, hidden collectibles, and fast-paced platforming really bring me back to the 90s. You play as …

I first learned about Kaze and the Wild Masks through one of my favorite YouTubers, ExoParadigmGamer, specifically in a podcast called Unversed Cast. When I heard that this game was an indie 2D platformer basically copying the original Donkey Kong Country SNES trilogy’s mechanics wholesale while making its own levels with them, it immediately got me interested. I’d say that, for the most part, Kaze definitely feels …

The DKC Comparison: I picked this game up because I like the SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy. This is like that in the sense that you have a roll/spin attack that can be used to extend your jump. Each level has two bonus challenge rooms to find and 4 KAZE letters to collect. Kaze herself plays like Dixie, being able to twirl her ears to slow her descent and cross large gaps. There are arrow shaped launchers that …

86% of the 190 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Kaze and the Wild Masks. The complaint that keeps coming up: late-game has too many auto-scrolling levels. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

It borrows many elements from the DKC series that it sort of lacks any originality of its own, but it's still a fun indie that I recommend to those who love 90s platformers!
positive · AI labelView post →Kaze and the Wild Masks (2021) Nice little Donkey Kong-flavoured platformer. Imagine you had a game where you're exclusively playing as Dixie, but she's also a bunny. No marks. /K

neutral · AI labelView post →Introduction Kaze and the Wild Masks is a 2021 Indie Action Platformer by Brazilian studio “PixelHive” and published by SOEDESCO. The game is comprised of four worlds and four bosses, totalling to about 30 levels (counting bonus levels). It features lovingly hand-drawn cutscenes, a pretty nice soundtrack, cute character designs, and pretty concept art as bonus content for 100%ing individual levels. Main Review The art of the game is definitely the highlight, but the gameplay is also nothing to…

It's been a while since I played a platformer, so I'm ready to check this out! Now starting Kaze and the Wild Masks!
neutral · AI labelView post →Maybe none, maybe a couple; lately I have resisted sales since my backlog is so big. That being said, some of the more interesting ones on my wishlist are on sale this time around. I might pick one or two of these: First person shooters: - Trepang2 (F.E.A.R. homage) - 60% off, $12 - Prodeus (boomer shooter) - 40% off, $15 - Metal: Hellsinger (boomer shooter) - 75% off, $8 Indie/puzzle/chill: - The Talos Principle 2 - 70% off, $9 - Everspace 2 - 70% off, $15 -…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm probably being too hard on Kaze but it really got on my nerves by the time I was done with it. I grew up with the DKC games, I loved them, especially DKC 2, and I should be the target audience for this one. It emulates (or should we be saying rips-off?) the main control concepts from DKC 2 including Dixie's floaty hair twirl. There's the equivalent of bananas, barrels, KONG letters, bonus barrels, all of that's here. The game controls well, and while the graphics and music are a…

If you are a fan of the DKC games this takes that framework and runs is some fun other directions with it. Beautiful pixel art & soundtrack. Challenging but fair platforming. Fun power ups. Lots charm. Worth your time if you like 2D platformers.
positive · AI labelView post →Game 040: Kaze and the Wild Masks I love this game for two reasons: First: it is a really good retro-inspired 2D platformer, with smooth controls, great art and fun, challenging level design. And second: this one was made in Brazil. É DO BRASIL, VAMBOOORAAA, CAMPEÃO DO MUNDO!! Sorry about that.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Auto-scroll and auto-run sections of the game were not fun. I gave it a shot, but it's not a game for me. The movement was not as smooth as I would have liked. I loved the art style and music this game presented. It is a shame the gameplay was not for me. I am more of a metroidvania fan so that might be why this game did not do it for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve been playing Kaze and the Wild Masks on my Switch lately, and it’s definitely helped to scratch that itch of wanting a new Donkey Kong Country game.
positive · AI labelView post →The beginning of the game felt great. It has interesting exploration, mostly balanced difficulty level and some interesting mechanics in enemies in bosses. Unfortunately, from about half way point it started being more and more annoying. Like 6 out of 8 levels in the two final worlds are auto scrollers. Some of them are auto runners as well. The exploration is much less interesting and it's just rush rush until the end. Also, the game has weird technical glitches where it resets your saves…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An incredible challenging bunny-themed platformer! As a bunny lover I appreciate all the "ears" mechanics 🐰 Excellent retro visuals and music. Engaging levels and interesting abilities gained through the masks.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Heavily inspired by DKC and much more fun than I expected. On the surface the game is too easy but if you decide to go for all the collectables, all gold time-trials, and no hit on all the levels it is satisfyingly challenging. Movement feels responsive and enemies/moving platforms in levels have good starting cycles that allow you to run through stages very fluidly. All in all it was a very enjoyable game to 100%.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great platformer. Fans of Donkey Kong Country or Yookah-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will enjoy this. Kaze plays similar to Dixie Kong from the SNES games with some other mechanics like a dive slam. Levels are built around the hover mechanic instead of it just making levels easier. In terms of difficulty it ramps up to be a touch more difficult than DKC games up through tropical freeze but not as difficult as the impossible lair itself. Overall decently challenging but reasonable, not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →World 1? 10/10 World 2? 4/10 Auto scrolling level design is cancer. Camera is too zoomed in so you have to memorize what to do. One checkpoint per level itself causes a lot of frustrations. The game needed more checkpoints. Hitboxes are spotty. Missing things by pixels is never my idea of fun. Feels like they wanted to make the game hard rather than fun. They succeeded.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved every bit of it! I'm so glad some people are still making games like would be found on the SNES!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Consider this review to be "mixed". Dev, thank Steam for not allowing me to flag it as such. This is almost a 1:1 copy of a Donkey Kong Country game. Right down to the rolling off the ledge jump, collecting KONG- I mean, KAZE letters and collecting bananas- I mean, purple gems. Don’t get me wrong, it is a competent clone. The in-game sprites and graphics are colorful and bright. Kaze’s in-game sprites are cute enough. The music… is there. If you ask me to hum a song from the game to save my…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice classic 2D platformer without any overly complicated gimmicks. This game aims to emulate Donkey Kong Country and does a good job at it. Earning 100% was enjoyable through and through.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible 2D platformer. One of the best non-precision ones out there, that unfortunately went under the radar of most people. The art, the design, the abilities, the bosses, even the difficulty curve are all perfectly built. Would recommend it to anyone who likes Rayman style platforming, especially if you're into beating its timer challenges. In that case, there's plenty to chew here
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Steam Fall Sale 2025 just ended and I purchased probably $300 worth of games. Final Fantasy Tactics, Red Dead Redemption 1, all of the Gal Gun games (Don't judge me.) this game and a lot more. I'm only two levels in and I can't stop playing this one. That's all you need to know.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like a very modernized version of the Donkey Kong Country games for the SNES. The movements are clean and the stages are fun and challenging. The art style is also very good and ties well into each world. Each stage also offers plenty of replay ability for different challenges, whether it be finding all the bonuses, collecting all the letters, racing the clock, etc. Definitely recommend giving this game a try if you like 2D platformers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Controls feel awful and it's generally not a fun platformer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To preface - I've never played any of the Donkey Kongs except for what was on the Atari so I can't really compare it to that. I've always been a Super Mario Bros fan though and played through all games on the NES and one on the switch. To start with the good: - I think the aesthetic design of the game is fantastic as is the music/sound. - The controls are tight and response and felt very natural...minus the ability to jump down to the lower platforms which seems like an odd design choice. -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't go too overboard since I have a lot of other unplayed games and money is tight. But I picked these up: - Sapo 3D (3D Platformer) - ATLYSS (Action RPG) - Lunacid (Dungeon Crawler) - Kaze and the Wild Masks (2D Platformer) - Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (3D Platformer) - Anodyne (Action Adventure)
neutral · AI labelView post →DK country but harder, way less depth in scope and less variation in gameplay/levels. Not as fun. The masks are usually auto run type situations and not at all like dk country. Pretty much entirely precision platforming/timing. Annoying bosses, not fun like dk country. so, i guess if that's your thing. . . Great style and animations. Decent music but again no where near touching dk country. . . - DK if i'll keep playing it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a hidden gem - very good pixel art with gameplay reminiscent of 90's platformers. It has very good level design and balanced game play. Very polished in all regards.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still my favorite game from this year. (Also 2021 was also another banger year, Kaze And The Wild Masks being my favorite from it)
positive · AI labelView post →its like a remastered edition of a 90s game and thats great
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wanted to like this as it's a dkc clone but its way too difficult. It's about memorizing dozens of things that can kill you instead of good platforming. Too many auto scrolling levels that give you an incredibly small window before instant death. And I'm playing this game on casual- yeah right it's anything but. Play Marsuplami instead it's WAY better.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like Kaze, it was obviously made with care and love but it's just not very much fun. The base game isn't challenging or engaging while the extra challenges can be maddeningly difficult and unfair, making both ways to play Kaze generally unsatisfying. The standard levels might be fun to play with a kid who's just getting into platformers, especially since the character design and presentation are more geared towards younger gamers. That's really the only way I could see…

Day 41) Kaze and the Wild Masks by PixelHive Kaze and the Wild Masks has you take on the titular character of Kaze in a platforming journey to save her friend Hogo from an ancient curse. The game plays very much like Donkey Kong Country; to give reference.
neutral · AI labelView post →Just found it to be a boring platformer.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did not like this game. It was in the good direction but it felt that they introduced high difficulty for no reason in some places, where they could just make a better platforming experience. It tried to be a little pixel perfect platformer in some places, but I do not find the controls that much fluid for such an experience. Liked the graphics, the music was nice but I would not try to complete it as much as possible. I beated the final boss and that is it.

positive · AI labelView post →This game was amazing! If you ever enjoyed the Donkey Kong Country style of games, you will definitely enjoy this game! The story doesn't really do much, but this game is about the gameplay! positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →13.) Kaze and the Wild Masks This is an absolute perfect game for anyone who loves the Donkey Kong Country series and is looking to get a similar fix. There’s a surprising lack of level-based platformer indie games out there and this one is extremely well-polished.
positive · AI labelView post →While this game has almost no original ideas, the mechanics and level design of Donkey Kong Country were copied very well. This is a challenging game, but you get a checkpoint in every level and there are no lives, so you can just keep trying a hard section until you make it. After beating a level you can try to do it hitless, find all the collectibles, and complete the level within the time limit. There is also a casual mode. Completing everything took me 10 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did you enjoy Donkey Kong Country 1-3 on the SNES? Then get this. Kaze is a mishmash of those 3 games with some of its' own elements. You even collect golden letters each stage spelling out KAZE rather than KONG. Levels are fairly short with a checkpoint somewhere around the midway points. Levels with mask powerups have multiple checkpoints as the statue with the mask counts as one too. You have unlimited lives with deaths restarting you at the beginning or a checkpoint. There're collectibles…

positive · AI labelView post →Really cute and fun platformer. Played on the higher difficulty and it was challenging, even when I wasn't going for the optional collectibles.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still on NFS Heat and have been playing a bit of Kaze and the Wild Masks (or so), both games are enjoyable enough in their own right but won‘t make it on any of my top lists.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game. Beautiful 2D graphics and animations, really nice soundtrack and an very old-school platforming gameplay that reminds a lot of Donkey Kong from the SNES. The level of challenge is great, same as the good old times. The game is absolutely worth it for the price; there is a lot of quality and care in the level designs. It is a simple game where you basically just jump and sometimes perform some other skill, but requires precise timing and controls while also learning the level…
