What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 213 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (374 of 425 positive).
Players praise the 80s horror aesthetic and atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some find the combat repetitive and the sewer levels tedious. [4][5][6] Many recommend it as a fun, unique indie game despite flaws. [7][8][9]

I really don't like giving this a negative review and I hope the developers can fix the issues with the game because it's clearly got an excellent framework and with a little quality of life improvements it could be really fun. To start off, the story and atmosphere are really well done. The dreary, stormy night feeling makes for a surprisingly cozy experience. It definitely nails the 1980s horror movie tone and the …

(Disclaimer: I was in the unique position of being able to play this game early in the pre-release testing phase. I was not compensated for this.) tl;dr: The developers actually gave a damn, and they made a great game for only $20 bucks. I didn't know what to expect going into Kingdom of Night. I knew it was a "cross between Earthbound and Diablo", two games I barely played, and it was probably something that I …

Diablo meets Stranger Things. Sounds intriguing? Actually, it turned out so well that after beating the game and unlocking all the achievements, I experienced that long-forgotten feeling when you don't wait impatiently for the game to end, but instead feel sad that it's over. Music is phenomenal. Aesthetics of 80's hits hard. A solid 10/10, one of the best games I've played in a while.

KoN immediately1 caught my eye with its creepy look and silly story, so I grabbed it on release. I thought I’d only play for an hour or two, so I was shocked when six hours had passed before I realized. The art is fantastic, and the music matches perfectly. The writing strikes a great balance between wacky and dark, think Evil Dead. The game never takes itself too seriously, and that’s a huge hit for me. It runs …

89% of the 213 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Kingdom of Night. The complaint that keeps coming up: combat can be repetitive and weak. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games where it's really heartbreaking to write a negative review, as it's clearly made by passionate people with a strong sense for 80s nostalgia, but ultimately, this is just not a game I would recommend, or at least not without a very long list of "yes, but..." caveats. This game feels like a group of friends came together, they all had some cool ideas, and threw them together, but never stopped to ask "does this work?". There are so many conflicting design decisions…

neutral · AI labelView post →Full review here: https://youtu.be/bD9Gor1e8a4 Kingdom of Night is a solid 7/10 isometric action-RPG with great 80s vibes, a surprisingly big open world, and real build diversity. It’s not a masterpiece, but it does enough right to keep you playing, especially if you enjoy experimenting with melee vs magic archetypes. The magic classes are way more fun and expressive. Melee works, but it’s repetitive and lacks combo variety. Exploration is the standout feature: lots of secrets, dungeons, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. Everything seems like such a good idea, everything looks great at first glance, but you play for a few hours and realize it just doesn't come together. The writing has a perfectly pulpy small-town, teenage-drama kind of setup into a supernatural mystery only to fail completely to capitalize on it in any way - and even if what little writing there is was great, it gets drowned out by gameplay. Sigh, the gameplay - it is just bad. Tedious,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just wanted to give my middle-aged gamer guy's highly subjective take on this game. Take it for what its worth. This game came out of nowhwere and completely consumed my limited precious gametime. I couldn't put it down and when I wasin't playing I was thinking about it, anticipating when I could jump back in. The old school approach and design really got my imagination kicked into overdrive. It's rare for a game nowadays to give me the level of immersion this one did. The game expertly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will start this review with a couple of negative things about the game: First, the archetype system for classes. I like it in theory, but not being able to change or respec for the entire game is a bit of a problem. If you want to try a different build, or playstyle, or decide you actually would have preferred sorcerer to necromancer, as I realized, you have to replay the entire game. I don't really have time for that. Like how you can reset your skill points, changing archetypes would…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a lot here that initially really grabbed my interest. The storyline is weird but good and engaging as far as the typical "save the girl, save the world," style quests go. The characters have some personality, and the world building is pretty good. Even the large maps are compelling at first, but the game wastes no time in becoming this mindless slog of monotonous combat and maze like locations that take forever to navigate. Sure, you can do quasi-fast travel via certain places.. But…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to be able to recommend this but it's too unfinished and buggy. If it was in early access still: Great start! Can't wait for 1.0 . As a $25 game I'm 15+ hours deep and the issues are starting to pile up. Bugs aside, the game itself is in dire need of polish. Long, copy-pasted, boring levels punctuated by repetitive combat make exploring a grueling process. They address this issue with instant fast-travel but it's bugged, at least for me, so that I need to quit out every time I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great music (in some areas), fun artwork, lacking enemy variation. Combat is just not very fun, and the story isn't very interesting. Random item drops, and inconsistent pacing. You can tell lots of love and care went into the game, but they didn't have a strong enough battle gameplay foundation or a good enough story to build upon.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think Kingdom of Night is mischaracterized as an ARPG in the Diablo vein. Sure, it can be kind of loot heavy, and there’s somewhat if a skill tree (with comparatively little customization option tbf once you have your class locked in), but the action is very rudimentary and the gear you pick up as well. The pixel art-style, basic combat, some (yes, basic) adventure elements as well as the isometric POV actually seeks more inspired by a different sort of vintage: I could not shake off the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played a couple of hours last night and really enjoying it so far! Combat is engaging and fun, while somewhat simple. I like the approach to magic classes and from what I've seen of my co-op player the physical classes, though needing a bit of tweaking, are also a good time. The soundscape throughout the beginning is excellent, really honing in on 80s synth, with shifts at just the right moments to get you pumped for a battle. Story wise, I'm honestly weirdly engaged. It's no masterpiece or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really cool and I am incredibly happy it got made, easy recommend for something this unique. I only have two complaints. 1. your out of combat run speed is way to slow, i understand it cant be doubled but even 20% faster would make a world of difference. Edit: I have learned as you level up you get faster so my first problem is a non issue. 2. This is my biggest complaint It's visual and not mechanical as combat is great, as a necromancer your summon henry looks way too cool…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute Banger. Weirdly cozy, appropriately challenging, cool lore and world, very simple, but polished controls. If you don't own a gamepad, it's 2025, get it together.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Atmospheric! This is an awesome game. The map is huge, their is a lot to explore and there are plenty of monsters. Game is challenging and addictive. Classes and specialty classes. Each one plays different. Many quests and people to save. Saving people can unlock them in the tavern. This game is a steal for $20.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loving this game so far. I was expecting an arcade beat em up. And found an action rpg with a really fun magic system.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would describe this as Diablo meets Stranger Things meets Troma Films. Kingdom of Night is a not too difficult action/hack & dodge RPG set in a 1980s Arizona town taken over by demonic forces. It took me 22 hours to beat it, which included a fair amount of side content. There were things I didn't get and someone going for 100% could easily spend another ten or so hours, I imagine. The story is pretty John Hughes. The protagonist is one of the 'not-cool' kids who has a crush on the school's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although there are a lot of rough edges here, I can forgive those. Things like the wrong name being used in a quest message, or weird hit detection where your attacks don't connect when they should - unfortunate but excusable. Not game-ruining issues, just a lack of polish. The reason I'm giving this a negative review, though, is because it's just so boring. It's fine for maybe 3-4 hours but then it really starts to become a slog. Combat is both repetitive and constant. The areas are quite…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Diabolical how this game has no real guide. Awesome experience don't put it on hard mode, and only play rogue when you get to level 20. I suffered through this entire game playing the worst class imaginable at least at level 20 I can one shot every boss I guess.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5/10 Very much a mixed bag and sadly it's negatives just about out weigh the positives. The story is a fun mix of the right 80's tropes and cliches, is quite well written and has a lot going for it. Love the pixel art style, the music and sound effects are perfect for the setting. But, mechanically this game really isn't great. The melee combat is passable but nothing special, the magic combat is interesting but very much not user friendly. Controls are quite clunky and you will get stuck on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played for over 2 hours defeating the first boss and exploring quite a bit of the map after the story bit that leads you to the bar. I briefly tried magic and decided I didn't like it. I tried the melee and it's too unresponsive to positioning and instead you have to dodge attacks that shouldn't hit you from far away. This is a basic way to code combat by having the enemy attacks always hit you if its animation begins regardless if you pull back from it's trigger range. Likely a consequence…

positive · AI labelView post →This 80's horror movie themed game is one you won't want to miss! I really enjoyed this game. It is such a throw back, wild ride that doesn't overstay its welcome. I finished with around 15 hours of game-time, completed all of the side quests except for 2 (I think), explored 80-90% of the maps, and saved all of the classmates. The level pacing was perfect as well. I reached max level shortly before the final boss and didn't grind experience too too much during my stay. It's got fun, action…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kingdom of Night My most recent favorite. Strange Things vibes in a pixelated action-rpg open-world(ish) setting? This game was one I waited for for a long time and it did NOT fail to deliver everything I wanted from it. I cannot recommend this game enough if the tone interests you at all
positive · AI labelView post →We wrapped up Kingdom of Night earlier today on stream and I have to say, I was very happy with the game as a whole. If you like 80's high-school "small-town full of secrets" satanic panic type of horror, this game nails the aesthetic. store.steampowered.com/app/1094600/...
positive · AI labelView post →Love this game but this one is definitely undercooked. From various bugs to the unexplained lore and storyline, I'd say wait for atleast a year and hoped they added updates or DLCs

neutral · AI labelView post →This game looks like a no brainer to me : Diablo, Weird 80s Horror John Carpenter / Stranger Things vibe... But really, it's awful. I can't deny it is a work of love, but everything but the setting sucks. Combat is awful, boring and repetitive. UI is bad and nothing makes sense. Builds and Loot are unexciting... and worse of all, the game is EXTREMELY chatty. Like a lot. SO MUCH unskippable stuff I don't care about. Ho and you'll spend an awful amount of time running around empty maps trying to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun pixel action rpg adventure game with Stranger Things vibe. This is one of those games that once you pick it up, you have to try really hard to put it down. Only problem i had with this game is playing with a friend, the loot is not shared. Just whomever picks it up first.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doing great so far this year! Should be able to finish Relooted this week, and I’m slowly going through Kingdom of Night on my Steamdeck. Next big game I’m waiting for is Pragmata, unless Crimson Desert reviews well enough
neutral · AI labelView post →After playing for abit.... I feel like this game does many things right, except for the core gameplay loop of combat and exploration. Im playing the necromancer, but from what I read, melee and similar issues if not worse. Besides the skeleton that automatically fights for you, the main spammable damage source that does not use any resources…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This games amazing I hope more people buy it so the developers make more games like it, it's up there with drova the pixel arts chefs kiss
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow. What a refreshing game. I think this game may very well be the best implementation of an open world. Unlike Ubisoft checklist type games the open world here feels deliberate and sensible. It's a very ambitious game. The combat feels nice, Sorcerer is complex to play and actually reminds me a bit of the Hunting Horn from Monster Hunter Wilds. The atmosphere is tight. All around the game is super solid. In a nutshell, this is an open world ARPG that respects the player's time. Seems to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Synthwave music, pixel graphics, an in-depth story and RPG elements all come together to make a really fun game. The dev is also really fast on keeping things up to date. Highly recommend for anyone who likes RPG's.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I was better at written reviews to truly explain how amazing this game is. It's not a flawless experience, but I can say the issues, I have had with the game are incredibly minor and don't impact the experience. First and foremost the combat is an absolute joy, from the awesome melee combat, to the really damn cool magic system, there is certainly something there for just about anyone. Tons of loot for us loot goblins, amazing enemy designs, and a pretty large map for you to explore.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a fun game so far, as an 80's ARPG it's got a fun tone, a variety of abilities to play a bunch of different ways and a free respec option so you can change if you are not vibing with what you have made so far. For the price it has felt more then worth it at the 5 hour mark

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The combat is good! I enjoy it very much. The Story is good so far as of writing this. Also i think they should rename Cain to David.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you play as second player, you don't get the achievements. Overall, I think this game tried to do a lot but failed to tie everything together. Worse, the endings were kind of boring and lackluster with Sarah being forgotten and left as the biggest and worst loose end. A smaller scope would've served the developers well. It would've cleaned the game of the biggest issues: 1) Sarah's bad ending / lack of ending; 2) Pazuzu's obnoxious level would've been tightened up; 3) skipping Charon's pack…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kingdom of Night is an enjoyable game with a lot of great ideas and I wish the devs had a bit more time to flesh some of them out more. You are tasked with defeating four bosses before tackling the final boss, with a long running sub quest of finding and helping all your scattered friends along the way - which when combined with the side quests do a very good job at encouraging the player to explore rather than simply run straight to objectives. Exploring is also rewarded by finding extra gear…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Art, music, atmosphere, plot. All there. Cons: Gameplay. After 3-4 hours, game gets boring until the very end. Melee is too repetitive. Don't know about magic, though. 'Skill tree' is more like a 'skill straight line'. Maze-like locations that take forever to navigate (sewers, i'm looking at you). Some quest targets are not on map, therefore easy to miss (found Fred by sheer luck). Conclusion: RealIy want to post a postive review. Alas, it is what it is.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the unholy lovechild of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo that snuck out the back while Stranger Things was babysitting. Combat’s real-time, not turn-based, so quit clutching your dice. Tiny heads up on the controls: there’s a separate button to flip into Attack Mode and the targeting could use a touch of polish, but honestly after 20 minutes you’re used to it and you stop caring because the rest is just that good. Smashed the entire game in splitscreen co-op and got so hooked it should…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good game. Lots of love went into this. Unique combat system (extremely more fleshed out and complex than I would have ever expected). Wonderful controller experience, but K/M works well too. I'm glad I had the option to be a face rolling bat swinger because man, the complex options are rather surprisingly that. I wasn't sure at the start about the game. There was a typo in the first riddle that rather frustrated me ('rests' instead of 'wrests') and it seemed rather awkward at first.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed this game. The combat is snappy and responsive. The difficulty is low, but not so low that it's boring. The story is interesting and imaginative, and I like the overall setting. My only real gripe was it kinda got annoying getting snagged on random rocks, trees, bushes, and boxes everywhere. It's not a super long game, but definitely worth the price even outside of a sale. Give it a shot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →12+ hours in, and half the main quest down, I can confidently say this game rules. It's just a well-constructed, good-looking hack-and-slash RPG that feels good to play and is set in the modern day. Yeah, it's set in 1980s America, but that's not the point of it. You'll find story tropes and structures that were common in '80s pop culture, but it's not self-referential or nostalgia bait. It's aesthetically an homage to media of the time, but otherwise is just a story about a kid saving his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A charming mix of Diablo and a touch of Earthbound. Its a gem a its price, and the dev are making good progress smoothing out the rough spots.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game! 80s horror vibes, big open maps to explore and comb through for secrets, lots of goofy characters to interact with. The combat as a melee class is pretty simplistic, and the spellcasting as a mage is not for me, but the exploration and environmental storytelling carry most of the weight anyway. Dev is very responsive to suggestions to improve the game, which gets a big plus from me. This game is clearly a labor of love, and even though it's a little rough around the edges, it's…
